December 21, 2012

The decision is set for 2:30 this afternoon. Right at the end of school, just before winter break begins. That’s good planning.

The choice will be Pitt or Alabama.

The recruiting experts seem to think the lean is to Pitt.

I’m just hoping he doesn’t do the whole hat thing. Just about every variation of that has been played out. I’d rather just see him rip open his shirt and show a Pitt jersey underneath. But, that’s just me.

I know some people are turned off by the whole announcement thing. I don’t have a problem with it. These kids are pursued to ridiculous ends. Filled with such levels of crap about how much teams and coaches need them, want them, how they are the piece they need.

It all ends once they sign their NLI and scholarship papers. They lose all leverage. All their choices, all their control is out the window. They belong to the school and coach after that.

Let them have a little bit of fun and extra attention.

UPDATE: As everyone probably knows, Robert Foster picked Alabama. Ah, well. Guess we can at least hope that Saban gets lured to the Browns.

Comment by BCPITT 12.21.12 @ 11:40 am

I’m all about having fun if he picks Pitt! I’ll be turned off on the whole announcement thing if he picks Bama.

I don’t go on Bama sites, is the Foster verbal also big news for Bama fans?

Comment by Why me 12.21.12 @ 11:44 am

Yes they are banking on him like we are. They just had a WR commit elsewhere so they’ve got all their WR eggs in Fosters basket so to speak.

Comment by Kenny Powers 12.21.12 @ 11:51 am

I love this tweet:

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 11:52 am

I agree that this is the young man’s chance for a few minutes in the spotlight and frankly don’t have a problem with an announcement. Its not his fault that the media is incapabe of putting this in the proper perspective when its Pitt or ‘Bama.
However, with all of that said, it is absolutely horrible timing on his part given the memorial service and national day of greiving for the young children in Connecticut. I wish someone had advised him to move the date, not because it would bring any of those poor souls back, but merely out of respect.

Comment by Taxing Matters 12.21.12 @ 11:52 am

I would say this, wherever I lived, or whoever I rooted for.

I don’t have a problem with it, unless there is local school involved, and the decision is going to be for another school

This just happened to us a few years ago, can’t remember the recruit.

Example. Kid in Nebraska is down to Nebraska and Miami. Has a press conference, has fun, keeps everyone guessing and waiting and anticipating, and from beneath his chair, he pulls out a Miami hat!!!!

That’s just me, I find that classless.

Not a big deal, just my opinion.

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 11:53 am

Dan – That’s why everyone hated Lebron for his decision show. If he said he wanted to stay home and help win a championship in Cleveland everyone would have loved him for it.

One question – Rivals has Boyd as a WR and scout has him a Safety. What are the chances he plays O and what are the chances he plays D? Watching his highlight tape he looks like a real home run hitter too.

Comment by BCPITT 12.21.12 @ 12:00 pm

Dan, I believe the recruit was Kevin Jones who had a PSU jersey on but picked the VATECH hat.

He then proceeded to run for 241 yards and 4 TDs in a PITT upset over 5th ranked VT. Still ranks as the #2 sporting event I have ever been to behind the 2nd half of game 5 of the Phillies Rays World Series. And I was there at the Garden when we wont the BEC. Doesn’t even compare.

Comment by Todd Gack 12.21.12 @ 12:03 pm

I bet Chryst has him play offense. This guy is a gamebreaker.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 12:03 pm

Just read this story… when you read this and see the deep connection to his family it seems to confirm the report in the link I posted yesterday that it will be PITT… just doesn’t seem this kid is going to go live in Alabama….

I believe that Darrin Walls from WH had a press conference and then chose ND. But I could be mistaken.

Comment by crazylegs 12.21.12 @ 12:14 pm

Yeah these kids are pursued to all levels of the extreme. Love this line, “Filled with such levels of crap about how much teams and coaches need them, want them, how they are the piece they need.

Granted, this is a chance for high level recruits to bask in the limelight for the moment. Some, a bit too much, yeah, those guys end up showing that they are a “piece”.

Since Foster supposedly has no idea who gets the nod until the time of his annoucement, if he intends to play the “hat game” may I suggest that somebody at the ceremony convienently misplaces the Alabama hat at around 2:25pm to improve Pitt’s odds?

If he does pick The Tide, I hope that he has developed a taste for grits and has no issues with being referred to as boy from time to time by some of the more indigenous of the population.

I realize that statement sounds crude and sterotypic, but last time that I checked, Tuscaloosa remains in the deep south and unfortunately old ways die hard for some.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.21.12 @ 12:24 pm

The Deep South especially Alabama, Miss, SC, GA are a lot different from the North. Looking at Bama’s recruits the vast majority come from the South so that’s who your teammates are going to be. Tuscaloosa is not a very cosmopolitan place. A lot different enviroment than Western PA and very far from a loving family.

Comment by Houston Panther 12.21.12 @ 12:37 pm

Tuscaloosa was once described to me by an Alabama native like this “If you like coke (not the soda) you’ll like Tuscaloosa.” Apparently there is a crazy vibe down there. Doesn’t seem like a Robert Foster kind of vibe to me.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 12:40 pm

Disclaimer: *Not implying that Alabama is a school full of drug-addled coke heads. The context was more around the “energy” of a place. But we’re all adult enough to realize that here… Hail to Pitt

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 12:43 pm

One must wonder & hope that the recent reports of Nick Saban’s interest in leaving for the NFL, coupled with HCPC’s commitment to Pitt seal the deal for our next big thing!

Comment by The Big A 12.21.12 @ 12:46 pm

Dr Tom, I watched the Namath documentary on HBO last night. He was at Bama when the Feds had to push George Wallace out of the way to allow a black girl to register. Interesting story line since Joe’s best friend as a child was black.

Not that there isn’t plenty of racism here in W PA, but it is different in the south.

Comment by gc 12.21.12 @ 12:48 pm

Also real interesting reason for Namath going to Bama. He couldn’t get in to Maryland, needed 750 SAT and only got 738. Brant sent Scnellenburger to pick up and bring Joe. Documentary is very good by the way.

Comment by gc 12.21.12 @ 12:58 pm

If I heard correctly, it is being covered by 93.7 The Fan.

gc, The political anaylst, Carville, described Pennsylvania as … Phildelphia on one end, Pittsburgh on the other end, and Alabama in between. (remember the Grand Poobah of the KKK lives in PA)

Comment by wbb 12.21.12 @ 1:03 pm

The joke is:

Pittsburgh on one end,
Philly on the other,
and Pennsyltucky in the middle.

Comment by Lou Gagliardi 12.21.12 @ 1:18 pm

wwb, That’s one favorte quotes eventhough it comes from James Carville. If you think about it as, Demoratic party guy, he’s essentially saying we have Philly and Pittsburgh, but the rest the state is full of hicks.

Hey about Robert Foster, hopefully he come to Pitt and adds another Bilitnikoff Award that he put in the trophy case next to Ftizgerald and Bryant’s.

Comment by Justinian 12.21.12 @ 1:20 pm

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 1:26 pm

I grew up 50 miles south of Pittsburgh in Fayette county. I lived for 30 years in central Pa along the Maryland border near Gettysburg. Believe me western PA is alot closer to Pennsyltucky than the central part of the state.

Comment by oklahomeboy 12.21.12 @ 1:49 pm

What, you got a thing for him??? LOL

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 3:03 pm

Since foster is gone, how are the WR’s looking next year? Do we have any WR signed for this class?

I looked over the current roster, it doesn’t look to good. A lot of short receivers. Not real good fit into Chryst offense. I don’t think it’s the end of the world with Foster not signing but a lot of 5 feet 10inch guys at Wr doesn’t look good since Saddler and Jones did nothing this year.

Comment by Why me 12.21.12 @ 3:04 pm

I’m with you Timmeh. I wouldn’t be as disappointed if everyone hadn’t been all “he’s a pitt lean” and “i’d be shocked if he didn’t got to pitt” on us.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 3:04 pm

We’re decent at WR. Have Challingsworth and a couple of Atletes that can convert to WR. Noteworthy: The only guy shorter than 6’1″ in this recruiting class is the kicker.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.21.12 @ 3:05 pm

Comment by Kenny Powers 12.21.12 @ 3:05 pm

Well…I did think we were gonna land one of the two.

But now I’m remembering this is pitt were talking about. So any optimism will be quickly stomped on by our beloved panthers.

Next will be that we won’t get boyd, and get stomped by mississipppi. Then donald and street to the nfl lol

Comment by rhyno527 12.21.12 @ 3:05 pm

Wd – Has Foster signed? Is Boyd worse?

Comment by frank MD 12.21.12 @ 3:06 pm

Ouch, this hurts! Regardless, best of luck to him and I hope he excels both on the field and in the classroom.

I have no inside sources or privileged information but I felt much more confident about Foster than I do Boyd. I would a little surprised if Boyd lands at Pitt.

Comment by JAM 05 Pitt 12.21.12 @ 3:06 pm

“If you build it they will come.” Bama has built up a great program. Kids like Foster will come to Pitt once Chryst makes us a winner. It may take time, but we will all be here.

Comment by oklahomeboy 12.21.12 @ 3:07 pm

Chryst likes the tall guys. Most of the short WR’s on current roster are Graham guys. Wonder if any transfer out.

Comment by Why me 12.21.12 @ 3:07 pm

I don’t want to say I told you so but I wrote a post on Wednesday in previous blog which said that many of the national media was contradicting him being a Pitt lean. Don’t get me wrong, I thought we had a great chance up until about 15 minutes ago … but many local people were more hopeful than anything else.

Comment by wbb 12.21.12 @ 3:07 pm

No Dan it’s about a kid going to school where he wants to and not please all you retards. Honestly Pitt should be happy they were one of the final two and be in the running with a program like bama. You guys need to get a life

Comment by Wd 12.21.12 @ 3:07 pm

Take your blue and gold glasses off for a moment and look at the situation objectively. Where would rather play, Pitt or Alabama?

It would have absolutely been a coup to land Foster, but it’s time to move forward. Pitt will survive.

Let me guess, you’re one of his coaches or something, or some hanger on.

I allready said above, no big deal, time to move onto the next guy. There’s always a next guy.

I think you have some real issues if you’re an adult and you have so much invested in this kid.

He’s just some kid, plays football.

Comment by KRF 12.21.12 @ 3:14 pm

Good luck to Mr. Foster-Hope he exceeds at Bama-Hoped to see him play for us next year but now we have to cross our fingers for Mr. Boyd. ALways a tough decision for 18-19 year olds. I was not gifted enough to have to make a decision like Mr. Foster so I am sure it was a overwhelming experience. Let’s all be mature and not take it out on the young man. Hail to Pitt !!!!!

Comment by wbb 12.21.12 @ 3:16 pm

I’m just trying to put myself in the shoes of a highly touted 18 year old recruit. It’s really hard for ANY school, let alone Pitt, to compete with all that Alabama has to offer. The chance to compete for a national title year and year out, playing before 100,000+ screaming fans, who wouldn’t want that?

Comment by Swinging Gate 12.21.12 @ 3:16 pm

Actually, Alabama’s game day atmosphere is horrible. I lived down there for a few years, went to many games.

Very boring, low key. Kind of like Ped State.

If he was going for game day experience, he would have been much better off going to LSU, Auburn or Texas A&M.

Now, Texas A&M, there is tradition, pageantry and revelry!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus, Johnny Football!!!!!!!!!! Heisman Time!!!

Now, that’s a school!!!

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 3:20 pm

Last comment I’ll make about Foster. After reading an article on how close he is to his family I’m really surprised of his choice. Not sure who the child was sitting on his lap but seemed he was obliviously attached to it. Not starting stuff here but wonder if someone is helping the family watch their son play most weekends. I also wonder if he was crying for joy or crying since he will be away from his family come next summer. Either way I wish him the best.

I blame Chryst. If he had a defensive coordinator in place before the announcement this would never have happened. Preferably a DC who can run a 4.4 40 and is from Florida, or somewhere in the south, or New Jersey, or somewhere in the mid-west with recruiting ties everywhere and who will stay for about 30 years, and plays a 3-4 or a 4-3 and doesn’t have any relatives anywhere. Damn our luck!

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 3:29 pm

Comment by Why me 12.21.12 @ 3:29 pm

After Foster’s official visit to Alabama in late October, he tweeted he was ready to make a commitment. He later backed off, but he wrote that his father favored Alabama while his mother wanted him to go to Pittsburgh.

His father, Robert Foster II, liked the Tide better because he felt Foster could play for a national championship in Tuscaloosa, but he did not push his son the Tide’s way. The Tide had to work to get Foster’s mother on board, who initially did not approve of Alabama.

“I needed to have reassurance they could accommodate him on the academic level,” Sherrice Clements said Wednesday.

Education was the biggest factor in Foster’s commitment. After struggling academically his freshman and sophomore years, Foster has made the classroom his focus and stays after school with a tutor twice a week.

At Central Valley, Foster has an extensive circle and group for support. Alabama was able to show him they can provide the same for him.

“The most important thing,” he said Tuesday, “is the academic and support system.”

Chas, that last updated sentence of yours in this thread is just sour grapes. Give the kid your best wishes and “Roll Tide”. Since we will never play Bama, wish no harm towards them. That is of course until Pitt opposes them in our future National Championship game against each other, then that’s a different story.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.21.12 @ 3:31 pm

It would’ve been a coup to land Foster if he weren’t from the Pittsburgh area.

Kids choose to go to local schools over more established powerhouses all the time to stay closer to home.

Shell picked Pitt over bama just last year for goodness sake!

You don’t build yourself into a power until you can put that fence up around your school’s region and keep the top guys at home. That’s the bare minimum if you want to move from a mediocre program to an upper echelon program. It starts in your backyard, and then once you lock that down and win a little, then you go pluck guys from other parts of the country.

Pitt gets some of them, but they can’t consistently get the top talent from Pittsburgh.

@Pitt Dad
Interesting indeed.

Comment by Floyd 12.21.12 @ 3:31 pm

If Foster chose Alabama over Pitt for their academics, he was clearly misled. I’m sorry, but Pitt is the better academic institution.

Comment by PatMac 12.21.12 @ 3:32 pm

“The most important thing is the Academic and support system” that a SEC school can give? I have a feeling what that means. Fluff classes to go along with a tutor that does most of the work. Hell, didn’t Dexter Manley get a degree from Bama or was that Auburn when he couldn’t read or write?

Pitt Dad’s post kind of confirms what I had been thinking for a while. Foster really wanted Bama but the only thing holding him up was his mom.

Comment by wbb 12.21.12 @ 3:34 pm

Alabama is the West Virginia of the south, so, let’s leave academics out of this.

After all, this is college we’re talking about!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 3:35 pm

Just catching up with the news that he picked Bama….seems a lot of people are surprised at this..I would of been surprised if it was Pitt myself…
…do we really want a kid that had everyone thinking he was going to Pitt and then picked Bama…I don’t know the kid and never met him but he sounds like a lot more trouble than he is worth right now.

Some people posting needs to cool it on the personal attacks.. I know today was suppose to be the end of the world but Foster going to Bama is not the reason for the end to start..(I don’t think the Mayans only watched Pro Football) ..If Pitt is going to rise to top it will take different type of player than Foster.

Comment by milobloom 12.21.12 @ 3:35 pm

It seems that Foster preferred Alabama’s “academic support system” to Pitt’s. I don’t think Foster meant to say that Alabama has better academics than Pitt.

Comment by Swinging Gate 12.21.12 @ 3:36 pm

@FRANKCAN, thanks pal, I’m good, having a blast with him!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 3:36 pm

I can state with absolute certainty that the Pitt undergraduate counseling system provides a level of academic and personal support unparalled at any other academic institution. If students generally are accorded such phenomenal support, I can only assume the support system available for Pitt athletes must be as good if not better.

Something doesn’t hang together here.

Still, the young man made his choice and I hope he makes the most of it.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.21.12 @ 3:37 pm

I don’t think that was the point. Pitt is the better academic institution. But the kid needs to be able to pass in order to play. I guess Alabama has better tutors.

We may have lost a great one, but who knows, I remember when Walt lost a bunch of four and five stars. None of them amounted to much. I hope only the best for Foster and will sleep fine tonight.

I did notice we have verbals from 4 tight ends and JP Holtz looked pretty good. Who knows, maybe Boyd will come. He could start as a freshmen and has better grades, won’t have to go to prep school as rumored with Foster.

Personally myself, I have 50-60 employees that I have to watch and make sure that they don’t overdue it here this afternoon at our company Christmas party.

An 18 year old making a college decision?? As Hyman Roth would say about the Rosato brothers, “small potato’s”!!

Quite pathetic. Every story starts with, “hey, I was one of Jimmy Boys coaches you know”.

20 years later, they have nothing else, and every story still starts with “hey, I was that Jimmy Boys coach”.

Hey, when I was at Pitt, I played in a couple pick up basketball games with Dan Marino.

You guys impressed now???? LOL

Not sure if it’s been mentioned above, but this came courtesy of Chris Peak via PantherLair’s Twitter account:

“On Wednesday Robert Foster texted his family and said he was going to #Pitt. On Friday he changed his mind and committed to #Alabama.”

Bob Lichtenfels of corroborated with this from his own Twitter account:

“Mark Lyons (CV coach) said as of last night Robert Foster was going to Pitt, changed his mind this morning.”

Comment by Stoosh 12.21.12 @ 4:29 pm

Maybe the Mayans meant that the world was going to end for Pitt today….:-)

Anyway….I had been thinking that Pitt would get either Foster or Boyd and not both. I believe that Boyd was waiting to see what Foster would do.

That being said, I feel that Boyd will chose Pitt now and be the the man at WR….not the #2 choice of the QB.

Comment by Jackagain 12.21.12 @ 4:31 pm

Comment by Wd 12.21.12 @ 4:31 pm

It really kind of says something that most Pitt fans are handling this with more grace and dignity than the ‘Bama fans seem to be.

Overwhelming sentiment from Pitt fans both here and on Twitter seems to be disappointed but congratulatory towards Foster.

Sorry to say that ‘Bama fans haven’t acted quite the same. Lots of cocky arrogance. Shame on you, ‘Bama fans. You’re a good program that should be well above rubbing something like this in the face of a program on a much different level than yours right now.

Comment by Stoosh 12.21.12 @ 4:33 pm

Stoosh, I think he made a mistake. Paul Chryst is a good guy and players at Wisconsin loved him. Nick Saban has certainly been successful, but doubt he cares half as much about his players.
I don’t wish Robert Foster any ill will, but I think after he signs on the dotted line he’ll realize the honeymoon is over.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.21.12 @ 4:46 pm

If you’re willing to discuss Boyd vs. Foster like an adult, I’ll offer this much:

They’re two different players. Foster is a bit more of a conventional deep-threat receiver. He runs excellent deep routes. He has very good hands. He’s 6’2″, 180-190 and he can jump, so he can go up and get the ball. He’s not quite as strong getting underneath or sitting down in the zone as he is on deep routes. That’s not to say he’s bad at it; Foster is a terrific route runner. He’s just better stretching the field.

Boyd is a little bit smaller – 6’1″, 175-180. He’s probably not as polished a receiver as Foster, but he’s probably a little bit quicker or more agile. He’s also incredible after the catch. It’s probably not a stretch to say Boyd may be more of a threat as a game-breaker from anywhere on the field as compared to Foster.

Comment by Stoosh 12.21.12 @ 4:49 pm

Wd is a funny guy. BTW, apparently my hand is too big to comply with your suggestion.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.21.12 @ 4:54 pm

We will never get every recruit we want. Let’s move on. The fact that we have a much better passer at QB next year is exciting and a good passer makes all WRs better, will get more out of TEs, will likely give RBs more screen options, and can open up the running game. Better QB, OL with a year plus experience with the coach,… Good times ahead. Good luck Mr Foster. We competed with Alabama on a top recruit and we lost. I like that we are competing on top recruits. We win some. We lose some.

Comment by Dish 12.21.12 @ 4:56 pm

Academic support system? Does that mean Saban promised me that others will do my homework and take my tests? Saban comes across as very dirty to me. I also think he bolts to the Browns. He has nothing else to prove in college. Ya, Bamy beats Pitt on atmosphere and is in the better conference and does compete for titles mainly due to Saban because he is one hell of a coach. Best of luck to the kid. He could have made a bigger mark at Pitt…just my opinion. That’s if establishing a legacy matters. Bama was littered with 4 stars. I hope Pitt lands Boyd now. Boyd was the PA football athlete of the year. Pitt has some good future quarterbacks lining up. Will need some good receivers to catch those many TDs. And I will not address the assclown troll whom I believe to be a Nitter or Hoopie and is just bitter that his depressed life didn’t end today. Pitt’s new era is just beginning…with or without Foster.

Comment by TX Panther 12.21.12 @ 5:02 pm

More misdirection from Nick Saban as rumors of return to NFL swirl?

That is one of the headlines on Yahoo Sports. If Foster changed his mind over night based on what he may have had for breakfast then if Saban leaves for the NFL before LOI day, we may have Foster back here. Regardless, we all wish him well and who knows if he eats something strange again on LOI day?

Comment by JD 12.21.12 @ 5:08 pm

Honestly guys, I care about who we get. Not the guys we don’t. I couldn’t care less what Foster does going forward. I’d love to see Boyd come to Pitt and any other local players who want to play here. I’m very proud of western PA football and I’m proud of Pitt’s tradition. When home grown players like Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Bill Fralic, Tyler Palko, DeJuan Blair, and Rushel Shell choose to play at Pitt, we take a special pride in their accomplishments.

Comment by Justinian 12.21.12 @ 5:27 pm

Comment by Kenny Powers 12.21.12 @ 5:28 pm

Disappointed that he picked Bama. I was actually surprised. It’s tough to see top talent leave the area, but I mean no shame in losing out to Bama. I always root for WPIAL players who matriculate somewhere other than Pitt, unless they are playing Pitt, so hope Foster enjoys a successful career.

Would have been sweet to get him, but as I said last night, I think Dorian Johnson was the most important commit. No idea what Boyd will do. I wonder if any other receivers that Pitt is still pursuing?

Comment by Iron Duke 12.21.12 @ 5:38 pm

Dr Tom that was a good try though

Comment by Wd 12.21.12 @ 5:39 pm

Comment by Dish 12.21.12 @ 5:58 pm

This one isn’t a surprise folks. Kids are often lured by the success of big time programs. They all believe that they will have an immediate impact and they all believe that they are headed to the NFL. What they often forget is that there are tons of players with their talent and better that are also attending the school. That being said, we should wish the kid well.

Hard to select Pitt when you don’t have a proven QB to sell to receivers. Let’s hope that next year we will have a quality QB. Thank GOD that the O line is coming along. Rushel Shell should have a monster of a year so the “pitch and catch” might not be such a necessity.

As for the kids decision… Alabama can be a tough place for a kids from Western PA. The culture in Alabama can take a little time to adjust too if your not use to things.

Foster may yet change his mind particularly if Saban bolts. Yes, it will be a culture shock for such a young kid. I experienced it when I moved down South. Yes, the classes are easier at Bamy and it seems the kid wants to stay eligible while playing. Again, I can’t fault him. But, until he signs his LOI, I think Chryst should keep on talking by simply staying in touch. I would keep a scholie reserved just for him…just in case.

I listened to Paul Finebaum show on XM radio coming home from work on the College Sports station. Finebaum is a big Bama fan, as are many o his callers.

There was not one mention about Foster — guess these Bama fans are used to get what they want, and Foster is just one of the several 4/5 stars in the fold.

There was, however, much Nick Saban leaving talk.

Comment by wbb 12.21.12 @ 6:32 pm

All I can say is, beat Syracuse, make a field goal in South Bend and whip up on UCONN the next week and go to a better bowl game with a 9 & 3 record and maybe, just maybe Foster chooses Pitt. Then you get a couple of other good/great recruits and the future is bright. But instead you get this. I can’t blame the kid, Bama is playing for the the chance at the first ever back to back BCS championships. Who wouldn’t want to be associated with a winning program like that. Bummer. At least there is Scotch.

Comment by LUV PITTBULLS 12.21.12 @ 7:00 pm

Comment by PittofDreams 12.21.12 @ 7:08 pm

Wow, over 200 comments, this got more response then the last several games.

Oh it’s too bad the kid picked Bama. He would have been a superstar at Pitt more than likely, who knows at Bama. I remember that hotshot 5 star RB from North Hills HS when Walt was Coach who went to Miami and was heard from again.

Bama has not produced ANY Larry Fitgeralds or Antonio Bryants !

I had a hunch he wasn’t going with us, as PiTT was making too many late offers. And I hope this didn’t letdown too many ppl. The local media loves to build things up for a big letdown for Pitt ppl.

Comment by Emel 12.21.12 @ 7:09 pm

So, a kid who’s extremely close to his family and who said Bobby Engram is the best WR coach in the country is going to go over 1000 miles away to school?! They currently have 7 freshman WR on the roster and only one Sr. WR who doesn’t even play. Something isn’t jiving.

WBB – Finebaum did talk about the Foster signing. It was his lead at first of show. Spent about 2 minutes on the subject. Said came down to Alabama & (in his snarky voice)Pittsburgh. He seened to be happy with the consensous 5-star from Pennsylvania.

If Alabama is like South Carolina(USC) they put alot of money into a Athletic Academic Resouce Center. USC’s cost over 20 million. Three stories, full of computer’s, small rooms for tutoring, plenty of tutors, a cafeteria, etc. Supposedly helped get Lattimore & Clowney to commit.Parent’s were thrilled to see that their son’s had access to help so that their academic side was not ignored.

Pitt should have one but is it state of the art? That’s what all the SEC dollars are being poured into besides football.

Comment by PITT-cocks Fan 12.21.12 @ 7:52 pm

Again, Saban is gone after next year. The number of Alabama WR’s in the NFL is not impressive.
But hey, you play in big games you win some you lose some.

Comment by SFPitt 12.21.12 @ 8:17 pm

We lost out on LeSean McCoy to Miami on the first go round. Shady then went to Prep School and Pitt won out in Round 2.

So anything can happen. That teenage troll can still eat Pitt’s shit

Comment by Emel 12.21.12 @ 8:21 pm

Besides, CALU will start outrecruiting them soon as Holgersen will get fired or leave on his own within 3 years.
Good luck to Foster. Hail to Pitt.

Comment by SFPitt 12.21.12 @ 8:25 pm

We are looking for leaders at Pitt, not followers.

The easier route is always going with a team or program on top atm. It takes a special kid who wants to be part of rebuilding or building a program into a national power again. Again a leader not a follower. Which is why Pitt has had so many NFL greats & players. They have something else, that certain something.

And maybe you too will be added to Pitt’s 8 NFL Hall of Famers.

we really need that rb.

we only have 4 rb next year.

emael, what are you talking about? you’re implying it’s easier/less of a challenge for foster to go to alabama, compete for a starting spot, compete againar the best athletes in college football every week in the SEC than to play in front of 35,000 “fans” at heinz field vs MAC teams and mostly mediocre ACC teams? really? get a clue.

Comment by scott 12.21.12 @ 9:38 pm

Julio Jones is no slouch in the league. Kid made the right choice. Would you choose Pitt with Steve Peterson as an AD? Look at the leadership and past 5 coaches in 3 years. You go to win Championships and Bama like them or not has proven year in and year out Under Saban they can do it. Good Luck kid. Go Pitt!

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.21.12 @ 9:43 pm

I was shocked to see it took some 200 posts for someone to ask what color Escalade Foster will be rolling in down in Bama… I bet he gets the crimson red one and mom and dad get the pearl white… Just sayin’

Comment by Pitt2Cali 12.21.12 @ 10:36 pm

Understand the choice… best of luck to the WPA kid who gets to go a dominant program.

As good people said above, once Chryst starts building something in 1-2 yrs this will change…

Hey, here is one wishful thinking scenario…

… now we get Boyd because he will be the star and doesn’t have to compete against Foster…

… then Sabin leaves for an NFL offer in the off season and Foster changes his mind back to Pitt…

… OK, it’s Christmas so one can hope…

Hey, Pitt is getting the type of recruits it needs to become a nationally relevant program again (linemen, loaded with QB and RB prospects) and look at the strategy with the redshirts this year…

Pitt should compete well in its first year in the ACC, be relevant at the top of the league and go to a good mid/top tier bowl next year.

This year really didn’t count and how many years does a good coach needs to turn around a troubled program??

Comment by PittScript 12.21.12 @ 10:40 pm

Pitt won on recruiting McCoy because of the injury…

BTW, academic help means that some girl will be doing Foster’s homework and taking his tests. Also he’ll be getting a free convertible to drive to his classes.

foster said in the newspaper part of the reason
he did not come to pitt was he did not want to be the man.
he just wanted to be another recruit and bama has so many good players he will get his wish.

new pitt offers i think not sure if i posted these before.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.21.12 @ 10:55 pm

The kid that was a shoe in for pitt during the walt years was Andrew Johnson. That was a mistake for him to go away so far from his support system. An injury and “bad” company left him off the field with many other Miami 4-5 stars. To this day, Johnson still says he made the right choice! Really? The answer is that he didn’t make the right choice and still can’t admit it.

The other 4-5 star Pitt lean for walt that went elsewhere, was A Morelli. Another mistake. He left a solid qb coach and went to qb hell at State Penn.

With regard to Foster, he is obviously still conflicted as evidenced in the video. I am convinced that he put himself in a bind with an announcement date and was forced to choose before he got the facts straight.I think that Pitt may get some reverse mojo back from the two metioned above come LOI day.

If he is intent on doing things for his high school, he should have stayed local, where his student body could support him! If it was about academics, he can’t do much better than Pitt. Remember, Pitt is in the top 100 universities in the WORLD!!! Alabama does not enjoy such academic stature. I think once the dust settles, we still have a shot at him.

AS for Boyd, same thing. These kids are good enough to go anywhere, but when you need to manufacture reasons as to why you need to go, it is clear that you have been sold. Some kids like to get away from family and friends and thrive in that scenario. But for those that need support, you need to stay. I am happy with both, with either, or with none. I want kids in the program that want to be here and I think PC is nurturing that mentality. I would encourage PC to adopt the DW approach on these things. If you give me your word and break it, you can’t come back. Northerners are never accepted into the southern circle. They are still fighting the war, believe it or not. For anyone that has gone through that, you have to agree. It’s an impossible fit. I wish him well.

For some/most area hs kids it behooves them to go to Pitt, it’s the natural order of things.
When you screw with the natural order of things, like Johnson & Morelli did, it generally doesn’t turn out good for all those involved.

Hey about that,,,,,

The World did not end.

Comment by Emel 12.22.12 @ 3:35 am

You’re right Emel, the world did not end. In fact, the best is yet to come.

The fact that a speial talent like Robert Foster had his choice down to Alabama and Pitt is testimony to Chryst and his assistants doing something right.

It didn’t have to be Pitt. Ohio State would have been just as suitable for a hometown choice option. And despite anything you might hear don’t think for a second that Urban Meyer would not have been glad to be in that position.

As I stated, months and months ago, long before the season began… Foster should have never been looked at as a “must have” by the Pitt staff. He was always a REACH given his obvious talent.

But, given the unexpected trials and tribulations of the first year of the Chryst tenure at Pitt, the mere fact that Foster looks to be seriously torn in his decision… can not be looked at as anything else but a positive sign for the Pitt recruiting successes yet to come.

Now, the responsibility falls squarely on the shoulder of Chryst and his staff. It’s up to them to simply start deliving delivering the kind of wins I and other ardent supporters believe possible.

At that point, in the new Mayan era… we can celebrate in the next Robert Foster choosing Pitt and in doing so see him shedding tears of joys rather than sadness.

Northerners are accepted in the south where there are northerners. But Bamy is the true south and you won’t find many northern or southern…mexican, latin america, immigrants there. Believe me the culture shock will be tremendous. He will be homesick that first year but if he can get through it, he should do fine. Surprised that he said he didn’t want to be the man. I can understand the pressure but I wouldn’t pass up that chance. Let’s move on. FRANKCAN, what are our chances with Boyd and Moody. Those are the two PA studs still left on the board for us. Also to all you Nitter and Hoopie trolls out there. I plan on playing the following numbers…13 and 9, and 12 and 0.

Rumors surrounding Nick Saben going to Cleveland just do not make sense…Saben LOVES to play golf.
I can’t think of a better place than Northern Ohio to play a liesurely 18, especially in November through March.

Saben to San Diego where Norv Turner will soon be given the back door makes more sense.

Comment by isnore 12.22.12 @ 7:51 am

golfing season for NFL coaches is between Feb thru June, and Saban can pick between his So FL and So Cal homes. When in Cleveland, he can travel an hour south to Firestone, 1.5 hrs SW to Muirfield Village or an hour west to Highlands Meadows (less by helicopter or private plane)… all world class courses as well as a handfulor country clubs and resort courses in greater Cleveland

Emel, great Bama link. Goes to show how different things are at that level, perennial BCS championship contender. If this blog breaks 200 posts that’s a lot of interest in a topic. When I hit the Bama link there were 1160 posts regarding the Foster commit. Even read some where the Bama faithful don’t think Foster is a quality recruit, questioning his speed. Anyway nothing we can do but hope some kid steps up and surprises everyone next year.

Comment by LUV PITTBULLS 12.22.12 @ 8:32 am

Ohio has some great golf. He could golf a few rounds with Jack. Saban to Cleveland makes sense. Foster to Bamy doesn’t. If it doesn’t feel right Robert, don’t do it. What recruits will be at the game tonight?

Comment by TX Panther 12.22.12 @ 8:34 am

Gosh, this is the most posts on a thread over a kid who is a high school senior. So he chose Alabama over our beloved Pitt. May he do well at ‘Bama. Lets move on to more important Pitt issues.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.22.12 @ 8:35 am

remember, the new Browns owner is also a Tennessee booster which contributed the 2% ownership in the Browns as part of the offer to attract Gruden to the Vols. Who knows what he would offer to get Saban who supposedly is an acquaintance of his.

Saban’s leaving Bama is certainly not a sure thing by any means, but what part of Saban’s past suggests that he will stay as a long term coach anywhere?

Us old folks remember Namath to AL and the Steelers not getting Dorsett and Marino.

But with Revis and Fitzgerald hopefully getting into the NFL Hall of Fame, Pitt has more than its share of great athletes.

Comment by frank MD 12.22.12 @ 9:25 am

@Scott, your use of ” ” around fans was totally incorrect.

You were trying to take a shot at Pitt only having 35K fans at games. Yep, can’t argue that.

The ” ” use however, questions the actual fans.

That would be totally wrong.

Pitt fans are as rabid and loyal as any other fans in the country, including Alabama, LSU, Texas.

No, we don’t have as many, not nearly as many.

There are however, Pitt die hards, that bleed blue and gold every bit as much as LSU fans bleed purple and gold.

Nope, don’t have 95K on a Saturday night, but the 20-30K die hards that are there for every game take a back seat to no one.

Now, before you jump back at me.

READ what I am saying. No, we don’t have good attendance, that is not an argument, agreed.

I’m talking about the people, that are Pitt fans, whether it be 5K or 20K, are into college football just as much as anyone else around the country.

Hence, your ” ” around fans, was misused.

Comment by Dan 12.22.12 @ 10:08 am

@ dan

i’m quite familiar w/ pitt fans. i’ve been going to pitt games for 35+ years, am a panther club member and have had my season tix for 15 years(i’m 42). my seats are on the 40 yd line in the lower bowl. at least twice a season some old fuck yinzer tells me to sit down when i stand up to cheer the defense on a critical 3rd down. those are the “fans” i’m referring to.

@emel, you’re a loud mouth jerk. btw, disagreeing with you doesn’t automatically make me a less intelligent troll.

i also go to at least one away game each season. in the last 10-12 years, i’ve been to games at texas a&m, nebraska, NC state, michigan state, notre dame, iowa and utah…at all of those places, i have NEVER heard one fan yell at another to sit down b/c they’re standing up and cheering for their team.

Comment by scott 12.22.12 @ 1:24 pm

Right on Scott, I’ve experienced exactly the same occurance with “sit down, we can’t see”. WTF, “stand up and improve the view, $hithead”! As a matter of fact, why don’t you substitute yelling encouragement for your team rather than wasting your breath by complaining to people who are standing up AT A FOOTBALL GAME, what a novel concept?!?!?!?!?!

Sorry guys, gotta give Scott a shout out when he exposes an issue that is legitimate IMO.

Kentucky, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri ALL stunk this year.

I’m really tired about this SEC non-sense. Yes they have good players, just like every other conference. If they’re so great why did Syracuse beat Missouri at Mizzou and Rutgers beat Arkansas at Ark ?

I seem to remember Pitt doing pretty well against SEC teams when we played them in Bowl Games.

1976 Sugar Bowl PITT 27 Georgia (SEC champion) 3
1980 Gator Bowl PITT 37 South Carolina 9
1981 Sugar Bowl PITT 27 Georgia (SEC Champs) 20
1989 Sun Bowl PITT 31 Texas A&M 28
2010 Compass Bowl PITT 27 Kentucky 10

F*ck the SEC !
