Did you realize that if you lived outside of the Pittsburgh area and your internet provider does not give you ESPN3.com, there was a very real chance of not seeing a Pitt basketball game until the the beginning of December? Terrifying.

Well, the cancelled games from the NBA lockout offer Pitt fans the first tangible benefit. The November 16 game against Long Beach State has been bumped from ESPN3.com to ESPNU. It has also been bumped from a 7pm start time to 9pm.

After watching the LaRoche game on Saturday, I’d say this is the most college ready freshman class of the Howland/Dixon era, maybe ever. Pretty low level competition but still. Both Gilbert and J Johnson looked very comfortable on the court. I was thinking that Birch looked kinda tentative until I saw his stats after the game. All will benefit from Jamie’s coaching on D. This is going to be a fun season for hoops.

I’m totally excited about getting to see the youngsters. Out here in AZ, I usually have to wait until conference play to see Pitt on TV.

Here’s a piece on Khem Birch I found on Yahoo/Rivals.
It says PITT did an eye exam on Birch and found he needed corrective lenses. Perhaps this might be a reason he wasn’t an offensive juggernaut. Let’s hope. Article also lists ALL of Pitt’s Parade All-Americans or was it McDonald’s..whatever.

Don’t know if that’s been posted before.

I dont get ESPNU but I get ESPN3 which inconveniently excludes ESPNU games. Oh well should be a blowout anyway

Long Beach should be the biggest challenge out of all the mid-majors we play (aside from the possibility Duquense getting lucky at the Con). Their top three players are seniors, and they’re all scorers so defense will be tested I think.

Already hyped for tip-off! H2P!

no one has mentioned that pitt canned the UCF game for next yr. Do they think we are headed to the ACC next yr as well. VT will be a conf game and that leaves only 3 conf games with the 9 non conf games? If not we will be screwed for cancelling that game.

Mike – What does UCF have to do with either BE or ACC? Do you mean USF, and if so what’s your source?

Comment by dinosaur 71 11.01.11 @ 11:37 am

I think hes just saying we will be short on noncon games

Frees us up to play the Hoopies next year when Pitt and WVU go their separate ways.

Would you believe comcast doesn’t offer espn3.com if you don’t subscribe to their sports package. Luckily, I still get ESPNU so I won’t see a Pitt game until this one’s on TV. Which stinks on ice.

Interesting link, wbb, thanks. In a nutshell:

“UCF was scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh on September 8, 2012. Due to realignment, the Panthers asked to cancel the agreement and the Knights agreed.”

This signals that Pitt and ‘cuse will aggressively pursue early exit as well.

Marinatto says today:

“the Big East’s presidents are committed to enforcing the league’s 27-month waiting period before any departing school can leave. West Virginia filed a lawsuit against the Big East on Monday, arguing it should be allowed to leave for the 2012 season because the league breached its contract.

“The conference believes these claims to be wholly without merit and will explore all its legal options to protect its interests and to ensure that West Virginia lives up to its obligations,” Marinatto said.

I have Armstrong and they don’t offer ESPN3. How is the quality of the feed for Pitt Panthers Television?

Thinking I’ll just pony up the $10 for November. Although that means I have to watch the games live, which is hard to pull off on most days.

Comment by Carmen 11.01.11 @ 2:28 pm

steve: I hope you’re right about Pitt and ‘Cuse being aggressive about leaving, but it could also be that both Pitt and UCF know that UCF will be joining the Big East for 2012. That would make Pitt/UCF a potential conference game and eliminate the need for Pitt to pay UCF to come to the Burgh.

Again, I hope your take is how it goes.

I just hope Pitt beats Cincy this Saturday. Pitt has lost games like this in the past when a win would make the path to the BCS much easier. I hope it’s a new Pitt and not the same old. If Pitt loses this weekend, say hello to the Tire Bowl again if lucky.

Comment by TX Panther 11.01.11 @ 3:40 pm

many different scenarios:

– UCF joining BE next year
– Pitt joining ACC next year
– Graham doesn’t want to play them because they’ve become too good (last time we played them, we scored 51 pts)

Comment by wbb 11.01.11 @ 3:45 pm

Tx Panther, last 3 years, it has come down to last league game before being eliminated. Of course, last year the loss at UConn killed our chances (as did WVU who also lost to UConn up there)

If we get past Cincy, I’m not even taking game at lousville for granted .. not to mention the Backyard Brawl

Comment by wbb 11.01.11 @ 3:49 pm

If we lose, the probability of Pitt winning the Big East and earning a BCS birth are virtually zero. Now if Pitt wins, the probability gets better. I see Cincy as being THE game this year. Yes, they can always crap the bed against Louisville or Cuse and yes, the Backyard Brawl is a brawl in Morganhole this year, But I have to like Pitt’s chances. The Cincy game is make or break much like UConn last year.

Comment by TX Panther 11.01.11 @ 4:01 pm

A BCS birth, are you guys serious? lol
What are you smokin TX Panther. This team with all the injuries and inconstitencies will be lucky to finish 6-6. Can you say Beef O’Brady’s.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but come on.

Comment by EMel 11.01.11 @ 5:04 pm

Maybe we get real lucky. But, I’m a big believer in one’s luck is made. Again, the Cincy game will be the tell. My money is on Pitt running the table IF Pitt gets past Cincy. Wanny waited for a horseshoe to fall out of his butt. I believe Graham knows how to make his luck.

Comment by TX Panther 11.01.11 @ 5:37 pm

It is practically impossible to know for sure if this is the case but I figure you are very close to the truth.
