October 26, 2011

Okay, it’s a likely damp, cool October night. Both teams below .500. Everyone is distracted by conference realignment. Or is it perhaps that we’d rather watch that spectacle than look too closely at the struggles of our own team?

UConn has a mess of an O-line. They have trouble protecting the QB. It all seems very familiar.

We will see how much UConn can or will blitz Pitt’s O-line. Haven’t heard anything in the hours leading to game time regarding Lucas Nix’s status. I’m assuming he will miss his third straight game. Hopefully here will be some better protection, and maybe even some average QB play. That or just give the ball to Ray Graham — a lot.

Hopefully Todd Thomas can return to the linebacker rotation.

In absurdity news, the Student Affairs Council (or something not affiliated with the athletic department) is distributing towels to wave during the game. Not blue. Not yellow. Lime Green. Yes, lime green. Apparently this is about depression awareness, and they are characterizing the green as a combination of Pitt colors. Yes, jokes about depression and Pitt football kind of write themselves. And I get a bit depressed just writing about this.

I guess on the bright side, the really absurd, insane losses to UConn all happened on the road. Last year. That ridiculous decision to run out the clock in the third quarter a few years back, and blow the big lead to lose in OT. Still scarring, but again, road games.

Okay, just a reminder, this is a moderated liveblog. Not an open message board. After a certain point, I don’t waste time approving repetitive comments. Especially the same complaint over and over again. Here’s a hint. If you do nothing but post “Tino sucks” or some variation over and over again, I’m probably not going to waste time approving it. That’s why your comment isn’t showing up. I think we got it the first several dozen times it has been said by others.

As usual, you can break the liveblog out of the site by Clicking Here.

Otherwise, just a little lower.

This might possibly be the last time we EVER play the Huskies in football. For who knows where they end up. SO WE BETTER WIN ! tINO! HAHA

Chas, you forgot to mention the Palko slide play as another insane Pitt at UConn moment.

Comment by wbb 10.26.11 @ 6:49 pm

How about a coach, in a close game, going for it on 4th down at your own 20 in the 4th qtr? Now THAT’s insane—except it worked for UConn last year, and sent them on their way to a BE title!

With our luck, that’s it for Ray Graham for this year. What a shame and WTF did we do to piss off the Football Gods???

Comment by Kenny Powers 10.26.11 @ 8:19 pm

Not good. Looks like an ACL 🙁

Comment by PITTfanInAtlanta 10.26.11 @ 8:23 pm

Graham’s done. Season over. Do you think MAYBE we can get over this infatuation for natural grass and replace with turf?

Comment by hacky3 10.26.11 @ 8:25 pm

Who the hell wants turf over natural grass?!

You can tell by Ray’s reaction that it is bad.

Comment by Ugh 10.26.11 @ 8:32 pm

Saddler has recovered from 2 ACL’s. Not quite the player he could have been but he did come back. Hope it is minor for Graham but by the nature of the injury (cut, reaching for knee, emotional outburst) every indication is that it isnt good. Only two real serious possibilities. Meniscus tear or ACL. Shame.

Comment by PITTfanInAtlanta 10.26.11 @ 8:43 pm

Is there more than 20k people at this game? Stadium looks empty.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.26.11 @ 8:45 pm

Man UConn sucks. Pitt up 14 in the first quarter? Sheesh

Comment by Kenny Powers 10.26.11 @ 8:45 pm

I guess West Virginia’s fans forgot to occupy Heinz Field. There are a lot of empty seats and I’m sure the university could have used the some more ticket sales.

To bad about Ray Graham, he’s an amazing talent and he looked sensational on the play before his injury.

Kaufman’s, ha!

Loved TG at half-time – (he’s ready to kill Tino for taking a sack and lost points) trying to act calm for TV!

Comment by markp 10.26.11 @ 10:04 pm

After the half Tino said it was an aggravation of an achilles from a couple of weeks ago. Really?Interesting timing of injury after a major snaffuu. He grabbed his high ankle, not achilles!! 13 seconds left and no time outs. The only thing he shouldn’t do is take a sack or throw an int….he takes a sack! Missed opportunities! Hope Ray G is not a serious injury. A classy individual.

Still can’t believe RG suffered that knee injury. If there was ANY silver lining for Pittsburgh it was the week-in-week-out outstanding play from the running back. And now that’s gone too? I’m a senior, so I hope for RG that he can come back from this. He’s too good of a kid and too great a player to deserve ANYTHING less than a full recovery.
As for the Tino injury…not as worried. Maybe he’ll have a bit more pep in his step and get the ball out sooner now that he’s “injured”

Comment by MikePITT 10.26.11 @ 10:11 pm

Did anyone notice that nary a teammate cared about the injury to Tino. That is a telling sign. Our MLB’s look lost defending the run. Good news is that the yards after catch has been great for the receivers.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.26.11 @ 10:19 pm

2 – 3 and outs to start 2nd half and Uconn in controlling the ball and a lot of missed tackles>
Not good.

When did we become the Pittsburgh Pirates? 10k fans here at best.

Comment by Marco 10.26.11 @ 10:37 pm

Bad night with Graham….

Comment by Pitt It Is 10.27.11 @ 12:13 am

Tino accounted for almost 500 Total yards.

LMAO

I’m thinking about coming out of retirement, I think I have .5 year of eligibility left.

Sorry to see Graham go down with, what maybe a season ending injury. Let’s hope he heals and can play at his high-level again.

Pitt needed this win. Except for the sack just before the half, Tino played very well and his stats reflected his performance. I give credit to the coaches who simplified his play calling, something they should have done several games ago. We spew trash at Tino but he is a good athlete who is trying to play in a system he never played in before including Pop Warner football. Maybe he doesn’t have a strong arm for the long pass that we like to see thrown but his arm is strong enough for the quick pass which can be very hard to defend – we’ll see this strategy deployed this week with the Patriots’ offensive play calling.

This football team is improving and that is a good thing for the rest of the season. I’m all about now and hope Pitt can have a winning season and become bowl eligible, something of a reward for the seniors. I don’t care what bowl Pitt goes to, I just want them to get an invitation and have fun.

We older Pitt alumni are spoiled by the Pitt teams of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. We still live in the past. The Dorset’s, Green’s, Marino’s, May’s… are long gone. Let’s accept the fact that Pitt is an okay program striving to get to great. Personally, I’d like to see all the banners removed from Heinz field reflecting past Pitt greats because it just puts pressure on our current players. Let’s reserve homage for the “hall of fame.” It’s just my two cents. HTP! Great win! 🙂

Marco: A Wednesday night game doesn’t bode well for the working stiffs. I attend GA Tech home games and hate their Thursday night games. Pitt’s administrator’s scheduled this game for TV $$, something good for the coffers and national recognition but bad for Alumni and fans.

Tailgating is part of the sport, be it NASCAR or football. I’d like to see all college football games played on Saturday’s but $$ talks as they say. Let’s give credit to the 10k+ fans who attended the game. HTP!
