Oh Lord, Why Do You Taunt Me?

I’ve railed for a little while about the horror of the Pitt-Rutgers game landing on Yom Kippur. Especially with the USF-Pitt game on Rosh Hashana. Not nearly as upset as On the Banks may be, but I have been relatively peeved about having to be fasting and booze free for the game.

Apparently my resolve and faith were not being tested enough. Calling the 3:30 game on ESPNU will be the unbearable duo of Pam Ward and Dan Hawkins.

Sunset is at 6:57. I will try to make it.

OY VEY!, what’s a Pitt fan to do already? May we be so lucky that daylight savings time hasn’t ended just yet.

Try getting a Rabbi to perform a wedding ceremony where the bride (my daughter) not only isn’t Jewish but an Agnostic. Add to that she wants a Saturday wedding and we are doubly screwed.

Comment by Reed 10.04.11 @ 8:40 pm

Yeah, the Saturday thing might be a hang-up

Comment by Chas 10.04.11 @ 9:12 pm

would Izzy Weinstock have played these games?

Comment by wbb 10.04.11 @ 9:27 pm

Does Pitt have a Jewish player this year? I can’t recall any since the days of Yogi Roth.

Comment by maguro 10.04.11 @ 9:31 pm

I don’t know. But if you know any, who can run a spread offence or can run a 4.3 40, I’m sure Tod Graham will sign him.

Comment by Justinian 10.04.11 @ 9:54 pm

In the previous post the topic was ‘Is you is, or is you ain’t a good football team’. The question is answered in this post. Pam Ward is doing the game..which means in the minds of ESPN…Pitt and Rutgers both suck. I cringe every time I have to listen to her nonsensicle jibber jabber for three hours. Someone at ESPN hates Pitt.

Comment by OliviaPitt 10.04.11 @ 10:02 pm

This is the one reason why I’m glad I don’t get ESPNU in my cable package. Gonna be following gamecast, no Pam Ward involved

Comment by Greg 10.04.11 @ 11:28 pm

Atheism has been a great choice for me. Its very light on commitment. Festivus for the rest of us!

Comment by Chris 10.04.11 @ 11:48 pm

My ex was one of the chosen people.

She’d kind of make half-assed attempts to follow the rules of the high holidays, but would never really make it.

Good luck Chas!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.04.11 @ 11:55 pm

I’m Jewish, but seeing as it’s my birthday I’m throwing caution to the wind and attention the game. Any other Panther fans gonna be there/know where the Pitt fans are seated?

Comment by merlin 10.05.11 @ 2:00 am

whoa, whoa! WTF?

I’m gathering myself to ask this question for which the answer (I presume) won’t be positive,.

Essentially, can we watch this game online, or not?

ESPNU, since its inception, has been just about the absolute worst broadcast option available to a university and its fans; one must subscribe for the package, or otherwise go to a sports bar. (In the very recent past (minimum 2008) ESPNU games could not be accessed on demand or via live feed internet (FIOS, Comcast, etc.).)

In sum, I would pay to see this game “on-demand.” I would not, however, consider buying this package under any circumstances.

Is ESPN3 the bigger honor these days (vs. ESPNU)?

Again, truly hope I’m wrong. And resultantly ask any in-the-know what options may be had for this game.

Thanks in advance for whatever answers provided. –Neil

Here’s what to do, my Jewish brethren:

Do your serious, high octane atoning Friday night, enough for, say, 48 hours of pure repentance.

Then, like me, go to the game Saturday completely cleansed and with a clear and focused mind.

(I didn’t clear this with my Rabbi but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind)

Comment by steve 10.05.11 @ 6:14 am

ESPNU is focused on college sports (and some high school). Its programing during the week is talking about college FB in primetime and playing replays of previous week’s games during the non-prime hours. I’m not sure what ESPN3 is but I’m sure I prefer U due to may affinity for college sports.

BTW, Alabama is playing on ESPNU Saturday night.

Don’t see how an online broadcast is better than ESPNU

Comment by wbb 10.05.11 @ 7:21 am

one more thing. hopefully Rushell Shell will be announcing his commitment to Pitt next Friday night when Hopewell plays on ESPNU

Comment by wbb 10.05.11 @ 7:23 am

I believe if the game is on ESPNU, you’ll also be able to watch on espn3.com.

Comment by Pittastic 10.05.11 @ 7:50 am

Chas, About the game and the holiday, I think you’ll appreciate the words of Friedrich Neitczche,

“What doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger.”

I think you’ll live.

Comment by Justinian 10.05.11 @ 7:56 am

I empathise with my Jewish brethren on this difficulty, especially since it could have been corrected.

For the past few years, Ramadan has fallen during football season and so I’ve spent way too many football days and nights sober and hungry. Now that the Muslim calendar has moved past football season, it’s back ON!

God’s speed to you all. Peace.

Comment by AJB240 10.05.11 @ 8:10 am

Doesnt god say in the old testament that you can break the fast in emergency situations and to prevent sickness. I would consider Pitt-Rutgers to fall under this exception. I aint fastin’.

Comment by Noel 10.05.11 @ 8:56 am

To my Jewish friends and fellow posters, if you have to miss the game……..I hope it is one that you are sorry you missed at the end of the day, and not one where you end up saying, “well, we didn’t miss much!”

DVR!!!!!

Comment by Dan 10.05.11 @ 9:11 am

Look at the bright side, Chas, at least you arent’getting circumcised again…shalom! H2P

Comment by Pitt Fan in Hoopieland 10.05.11 @ 9:39 am

Is Pam Ward the same excruciating woman who did the Iowa game?!? If so, I don’t think I can handle listening to that level of incompetence for another 3 hours. I may have to do it like the Steelers Myron Cope era where you’d “turn down the sound” and watch the game while listening to Hillgrove and Bostick. Nice option if you can get the 2 broadcasts to sync up at all.

Comment by Hank the Tank 10.05.11 @ 9:53 am

Doesn’t it say in the Torah from the book of Vayikra that God told the Israelites it was ok to blow the shofar and drink wine on the day of judgment if a Pitt game was played. I could be wrong on that.

Comment by TX Panther 10.05.11 @ 9:56 am

And Dan Hawkins isn’t much better than her. What a pair!! He may be worse!

Comment by Dan 10.05.11 @ 10:11 am

Pam Ward won the contest for the lowest voice most “butch” female announcer. The rest are just wannabies!

Comment by Dan 72 10.05.11 @ 10:23 am

Watch the game on TV — hit the MUTE button — turn on the radio broadcast.

Comment by Pitt73Pete 10.05.11 @ 10:26 am

Ramadan during football season was the worst. I can sympathize Chas. Good luck and hopefully Pitt wins so you can celebrate at sundown.

Comment by Omar 10.05.11 @ 10:31 am

If the Panthers can perform like they did against South Florida, I don’t care if Oprah is doing the game.

Comment by Justinian 10.05.11 @ 10:33 am

Pam Ward is a female??

Comment by JW 10.05.11 @ 10:47 am

Justinian, LOL. I’m with you, as long as I can view it and they can give a minimum amount of info, I can care less who is broadcasting.

Comment by wbb 10.05.11 @ 11:08 am

Dan72 and JW, LMAO!!!

Comment by Dan 10.05.11 @ 11:20 am

Anyone in Pgh run into this?

I don’t get the ESPNU package with Verizon FIOS, but last weekend, I believe Penn St was playing on ESPNU, and the channel came through. The only reason I tuned in was my desire to see JoePa poopoing his pants as he ran across the field again.
Does ESPN somehow turn this channel on for live game-action?

I will clearly be muting the station and listening to the broadcast, same as every Pitt and Steeler game. Delay be damned. Just gotta deal with it.

Comment by Big Bill 10.05.11 @ 11:32 am

Yeah, the conflicts with the high holidays the past several years have been rough. These have included several weekday games (as with Rosh Hashanah this year). This year I have the added conflict of my daughter’s first birthday falling on…you guessed it, Yom Kippur. So, for the first time in many years, I am just blowing through the whole fasting thing. I could make it through the Pitt game, but I’m not missing her first birthday cake!

Comment by Pantherman13 10.05.11 @ 12:07 pm

Chas, FWIW, the sunset in Israel is 11:57 am EDST .. just a variation of the ‘it’s 5:00 somewhere” concept

Comment by wbb 10.05.11 @ 12:41 pm

Bad news, just heard, Pitt hoops is “only” on national tv 17 times on one channel or another this year!! Pitt needs to get moving with the hoops program!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 10.05.11 @ 1:57 pm

BigBill, sure you don’t get it??? I have Verizon Fios in the South Hills, all the Espn’s come with the sports package on mine. Have had ESPNU since I got Fios 3 years ago. Hey, maybe they’re different for diff. locations???

Comment by Dan 10.05.11 @ 2:18 pm

Dan,

Thanks, I will check it out tonight.

Comment by Big Bill 10.05.11 @ 4:53 pm
