There’s a couple reasons I stay away from the area of recruiting news beyond linking to info from others and basic opinion. As much as we all crave the info. The scoop. The inside info. There are days when the whole thing just makes you want to take a chemical rinse to wash it all away.

Let’s face it, the whole nature of recruiting has a natural “eww” factor. We are talking borderline stalking of young, athletic boys — by multiple parties. And fans are on websites and forums obsessively tracking and going on emotional rollercoasters over their plans. I try not to think too much about that.

From highly accomplished and acclaimed coaches doing whatever it takes to convince some kid in high school to come sign, to the recruiting sites breathlessly reporting on the latest impulses of a 16-year old boy. And so much crosses each wire. The coaches and assistants feed some info to the recruiting sites to maneuver and relay info to the recruits. The recruiting sites use that info to have scoops. Everyone knows the game and plays it. I don’t want to say all sides use each other, so much as carefully share information to maximize their own interests. Even the kids at this point. They understand. Probably better than most of us.

It also means those that do write on recruiting are generally stuck with info that comes off as vague unless it comes from the kids, the family or the high school/AAU coaches. College coaches and the assistants aren’t allowed to talk on the record about recruits. That’s an NCAA no-no. So anything gleaned from sources within an athletic department have to be protected. It can’t come back, which requires a certain nebulous quality in conveying that side of the info.

On the academic issues, there’s a lot of problems in tracking that. There are privacy/verification issues of the student. Plus, these things are fluid. Heck, I posted on FanHouse about how Arizona commit Brandon Jennings has not yet academically qualified. It doesn’t mean he won’t get qualified. But right now, he hasn’t. It has an impact on how early a commit can get on campus and people want to know. So even if ultimately it comes to nothing, it gets reported at that moment.

Have you guys read Paterno’s article in the Post-Gazette…The article is about his recent hospitalization, etc…..He is asked about the Pitt – Penn St. rivalry. Insteresting!

Chas, What is the purpose of this post? We all understand this and take recruiting info with a grain of salt. Why the need to make this post at the risk of sounding self-righteous?

As long as people like to read about recruiting, there is money to be made writing about it.

I agree with Sara. I love reading recruiting articles. Although I understand that most of the inside info., and all the other talk is bogus, I still love to read about it.

The Paterno article is great – he basically confirms what Penn State fans always deny: that the rivalry ended because JoePa is bitter Pitt wouldn’t join his conference.

That’s the same thing Paterno says every time the subject comes up…..if only Pitt had joined his Eastern All Sports League. First, from what I understand, his plan for the EASL included revenue sharing in hoops, which would have benefitted UPS, but not in football. Second, he floated this plan after being rejected for membership in the BE. Finally, even if Old Joe is correct about everything, and Pitt was totally to blame because the then administration didn’t see the genius of his plan, GIVE IT A REST, ALREADY!!! It was about four administrations and 26 years ago!!!!

Ok…we are almost into June and NO Football Commits yet, this is nuts, the last 3 years we had 5-8 players already….the coaches better have this team ready for the season or heads will start rolling! NO MORE SUB .500% SEASONS, I WANT TO GO TO A BOWL GAME, AND A GOOD ONE AT THAT!!!

Comment by Marco 05.23.08 @ 4:20 pm

Marco–posters elsewhere have cited a maximum of 2-3 commits prior to June in past years. This year it also seems there may only be about 14 ships available total. You are excessively paranoid, IMO.

Comment by pitt1972 05.23.08 @ 5:42 pm

Pitt1972 is right of course. But I share Marco’s frustration. I just realized this morning that the “local” Pittsburgh newspaper has had absolutely no articles about Pitt football in nearly two months. Yeah, small number of scholies, low talent pool in the WPIAL this year, etc etc, but it’s discouraging that no high-profile recruits are even being floated as possibilities to us. At the same time I was amazed we did as well as we did the last two years given our performance on the field and in the stands. Gotta win now, I agree.

Marco: you need to know that DW and his staff are going to be extra choosy this year because it will be a smaller class. There is no rush right, as there is no early signing period. They need the delay right now to get a look at some of these guys in summer FB camps. We just need to chill out for a bit longer.
As far as recruiting news goes, I am also a junkie and can not get enough news about what is happening with PITT.
As far as Paterno goes, it just goes to show that what goes around comes around and eventually bites the program he built. State Penn is going downhill fast and there is little hope while that anti-PITT man is in charge. Someday State Penn will change, but until then it’s remember 12-0 baby! HTP!!!

[…] There was a good question about why I wrote the prior piece on recruiting writing. We are in the dead period of college football and basketball. Outside of prognostication and puff pieces, generally the only “news” will be on recruiting. I figured it might be best to get some of my feelings out there to better clarify my biases. The info I relay does go through my filters. […]

[…] Pitt Blather pretty much calls out recruitniks, and I echo a lot of that feeling. On top of that, I followed recruiting pretty close for a few years when the internet coverage was beginning to boom, and you become so disappointed almost no matter what happens. You find yourself rooting for guys to take visits, make verbal commitments, and what they say in their interviews about your coaching staff and facilities, then when they sign it’s kind of anti-climatic. Then you feel cheated every time a player doesn’t contribute right away. It’s great to have that information but it’s definitely easy to take it too far on all accounts. It’s almost to the point now where you wonder if the NCAA should just de-regulate and let anything go, because they’re running the tightest ship possible now and there are still plenty of shenanigans that get by.
