Three Football Players Arrested

Here’s the story.

The three players are  linebacker Eric Williams, tight end Andrew Carswell, and defensive linemen Khanyin Moslesy-Smith. They were arrested for possession/usage and in the same room as them were 20-bags of heroin, a marijuana bong, and a copper grinder. While they are innocent until proven guilty, I expect swift action from Chryst and the Athletic Department.

Please don’t be too disrespectful to the coaches. Keep in mind a lot of these problems were inherited, especially Drew Carswell. Feel free to extrapolate what you want when I single out Carswell. I’ll never post second hand knowledge, but with what I know about Drew…it doesn’t surprise me at all.

*edit*

Update: All 3 have been suspended indefinitely from the football team.

Reed, I certainly hope it’s not as grim a picture as you paint. But I do agree, character matters.

There’s a Greek saying,

“So I may know you, tell me who your friend are.”

We’ve talked about the curse for many years, but I don’t remember a time when we have had more negative news over a short but sustained period of time.

It just seems like we never hit bottom.

One has to wonder, how does the man at the top hold his job? Of course he is not responsible for every instance of these actions, but does not the buck have to stop somewhere?

Is it not time for a change in management, in direction, in luck?

It has been one embarrassment after the other for way too long.

Why is none of this his fault or his responsibility?

Enough is enough. I agree with JR that this is not on PC, but it is an indictment of Pitt, do you think parents want their kids going to a school or a program where this and all of the other negative BS seems to hit the papers constantly.

It is the total package of these occurrences that is becoming inexplicable, and a total embarrassment.

Some action is required.

Justinian, agree 100% on the showboating comment. Also can’t stand it when players don’t hand the ball to a ref after a play. We don’t need punks like that.

Comment by HbgFrank 04.27.13 @ 9:04 am

gc is right!

Pitt athletics needs a reboot or a housecleaning or whatever you want to call it. It’s my alma mater and I feel I have some ownership, and I simply want it to be much better than it is.

Right or wrong, these sports programs are a significant reflection on the school.

Even the basketball program is sliding backward, perhaps more rapidly than we think. I’m no Dixon basher but even with all his success, I didn’t agree with the mega-extension and all the talk about how SP is his best friend, etc.

The ONLY good thing that has happened over the last few years was the ACC and even that had a large element of luck involved. (BC vetoing UConn)

The football and basketball programs are marginal at best and I have little feel for any movement than treading water. Hope is not a plan. I understand the issue of some of this being DW residue but quite a bit of time has now gone by, time that has been filled with debacle after debacle that has nothing to do with Wanny.

I would like to see a thorough housecleaning. The management of Pitt athletics is simply not good enough. Fire Steve Pederson.

Ya know, if we’re gonna have the criminal element, you would have thought we’d of had better results!!!

Let’s go for broke, let it roll, let’s go
Miami circa late 80’s and 90’s!!!!!!!!!

Let’s be the bad boys of the ACC!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!

Although this situation sucks for these three accused players, actually, it simply mirrors the current sorry state of affairs in our society as a whole. And yes, maybe it is even a specific inditement against a specific segment of that society.

When the $hit hits the fan, in a case like this, it would be wise to consider the influences that prevailing attitudes within those individual’s life experiences have had in such a situation. When an individual’s social invironment constantly displays a stream of negative influences that are so pervasive so as to actually distort that individual’s perception of his reality, to the extent, that such obvious social and legal taboos are allowed to be condoned as acceptable in his own mind and therefore is permitted to be included in their daily lifestyles, well then, there my friends, is the elephant in the room, brought up for discussion.

What one person sees as so apparently “stupid”, “immoral”, “illegal”, of “poor character”, etc. could easily be viewed by another, who possesses a totally different set of societal values simply as a dude being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and nothing more.

Yeah, I know, that’s a totally “F”ed up perception if you’re wishing for a healthy social invironment in which to live in, but that is EXACTLY WHY we are in need of so many “Administration of Justice graduates” in the first place, now days! Soooo ironic!

Welcome to the brave new world, my friends. God help us all.

Jabaal Sheard was an exaemplary student athlete who was elected captain of the fB team after the incident and graduated in 4 years. He was confronted by an instigator to the point that in the presence of police, Sheard thru this piece of carp thru a glass door … and still he he got off only with a summary offense and paid approx $1000 in damages.

He is now an exemplary 3rd year player with the Browns who in fact, just had an article in the Plain Dealer where the coaches had very positive things to say about him.

He may have been the poster boy in the SI article and Reed can pontificate all he wants, but he is wrong.

Fact is that these 3 players have now been in the program for nearly 2 1/2 years under two other coaching staffs and now all of the sudden, they’re nothing but Wanny recruits …. cut me a break!!

Reed, you forgot to mention how Greg Romeus should have raised a lawsuit against Wanny for ruining his career

Comment by wbb 04.27.13 @ 10:41 am

@BATR, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Smug Smilin’ Steve got us to the ACC!!! LMAO!!!

Comment by Dan 04.27.13 @ 11:01 am

Reed, If these 3 were such bad seeds, then why didn’t the coaches or the admin deal with them before now?

I mean they have been part of this program for 3 years now, where the coaches had contact with them nearly every single day …. which is much, much, much, much more exposure than Wanny could have ever had while recruiting them

Comment by wbb 04.27.13 @ 11:11 am

for the record, just checked the criminal dockets: all 3 charged with an ungraded misdemeanor: possession of drug paraphernalia. In Alleg Co, that is often resolved at the prelim hrg with a disorderly conduct or some summary. Should be resolved early in the crim justice system.

but the comments above are appropriate. Stupid. Stupid Stupid.

WBB – Honestly – do you really think it is a coincidence that the DW recruits have been getting in this much trouble? Really?

Think about what we have seen from the players both on and off the field over the last three years and then dispute that there was a systematic problem with our recruiting program. Locker room fights, giving up on games, suspensions, arrests and summons for criminal activity, on and on and on.

Seriously, what more proof do you need then when a player was resisting arrest and his buddy, another player, is there and tells him, “Coach Wannstedt isn’t here any more”?

This isn’t what happens in every other program either as some diehard PITT fans will say, it is way above the norm for D1 football programs. This is a fundamental problem of both the ability to judge character and of the ability of effectively lead his charges. Now Graham and Chryst are having to deal with the consequences of those problems.

As to Sheard – suspensions serve two purposes, one is to correct a player’s attitude and behavior and the other is to send a message to other player’s that behavior like that is intolerable. BTW – it wasn’t just ‘coming to another’s defense’ as has been spun – Sheard did continue to beat the guy after he went through the door. Either way the action is intolerable.

Fans can rationalize all these problems away by saying it happens elsewhere or that they are just kids but it ia way more than that. PITT is spending around $250,000 per year on these players and as such demand that they meet the standards of conduct and are good representatives of the University. So Hell yes they are held to a higher standard than others.

DW should have formalized any type of discipline on Sheard even if he didn’t start the 1st quarter or the first game. He didn’t have to ruin the kids career but he did have to show leadership.

But DW didn’t and what happened afterward was pretty obvious.

Comment by Reed 04.27.13 @ 3:56 pm

Blaming this on DW is way too convenient.

In fact it’s laughable.

DW hasn’t been around since 2010 and didn’t let these 3 kids associate with a heroin drug dealer.

Reed that is way off base.

Also posting that scout link on the 2010 recruiting class and using that as some sort of evidence because of the high attrition rate.

Let me see…the 2010 class had 4 different Head Coaches in 4 years. (DW, Heyward, Graham & Chryst) in 4 years.

Do you think that might have had something to do with the high attrition rate. lol

Get serious dude.

Comment by EMel 04.27.13 @ 7:06 pm

actually they had 4 Head Coaches in 3 years.
Which is the NCAA record for most amount of Head Coaches in a 3 year period. Pitt finally has a record in the NCAA record books to be proud of.

There were so many in such a short time it even confuses me.

And yet the AD is still here collecting his huge paycheck and his agts are out blaming DW.

Comment by EMel 04.27.13 @ 7:11 pm

Keep sending your money and support to Steve Pederson who runs a disaster of a Athletics Program.
