Open Thread: FIU-Pitt

Hell of a tough week trying to get over a sinus infection, and all the other crap of everyday life. But I’m well enough to make this trip and see the game. Despite even my frustration and annoyance over the season to date, it is not over and I am not missing the game.

The game is on ESPN3.com where your internet provider offers it. Other wise look for the appropriate feed.

I’ll be tweeting all day to follow along.

Kevin, specifically, what in Cook’s article are you in disagreement? It seems to me that it was an accurate analysis.

I will take no sides, and go read Cooks article now. No positve agenda, no negative agenda, no agenda at all.

Comment by Dan 10.03.10 @ 11:44 am

Didn’t see game — Did Tino really look good after his horrible start or were the receivers just way open for easy 7 yarders? If he was hitting some nice slants and timing passes, that bodes well for the season…especially with Ray Ray bringin’ it. Of course, if we win two or three in a row by throwing it effectively, then Wanny must resort to running up the gut 20 times in a row against a superior opponent (see Galipoli, the movie — one of Mel’s best before he lost it)

Comment by Matt N. 10.03.10 @ 11:49 am

You may not like him, as BigGuy says, “what’d he say that was incorrect???” We were leading Florida International University by 6 points in the fourth quarter for crying out loud!!

Comment by Dan 10.03.10 @ 11:52 am

POLE that happened a while ago.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 10.03.10 @ 11:59 am

I think Ron Cook was spot on. FIU tired out against bigger faster stronger guys. So did NH. While this was certainly better than a loss. I’m pretty sure when it was 23 – 17 most of us had that sick feeling that comes too often for Pitt fans. Graham was the difference and Sunseri improved as the game went on, but I will be amazed if we give ND much of a fight. I would love to be wrong.

Comment by gc 10.03.10 @ 12:05 pm

Things look up. BUT, as many have said, it was against an inferior opponent and through 3 quarters, they were right there with us. So are we really all that good? I did like the improved line. If Gibbs continuously improves, he should be a beast.

Too bad Tito Fuente can’t deliver an accurate ball anywhere beyond 10 yards. Baldwin’s stock continues to drop.

Next week will be ugly for both teams OR we may make ND look like a BCS team.

Comment by Pitt It Is 10.03.10 @ 12:21 pm

Ron Cook is an idiot, whether his analysis is accurate or not. He loves to hate Pitt — diminish their accomplishments and blow out of proportin any negative news. He doesn’t know very much about football and is a joke of a professional sports writer.

Comment by TJ 10.03.10 @ 3:20 pm

O good call Henry sorry, little late. Ron cook does suck though i can get that right. I did think they would give Bosticksome playing time was very dissapointed.

Comment by POLE 10.03.10 @ 4:46 pm

2-3 going into BE play.

Losses to WVU & Cincy

7-5 at best.

Sorry I love Pitt, but I am dealing in reality.

Since I could not get the contest on “Gameplan” I finally pulled up the play by play on my computer and viewed every down. Frankly, I have to dicount the PG sports critiques since they lack objectivity. The exception is Zeise who seems to know his subject. International is not a bad team as will be proven later in the season. They have lost to Rutgers, Texas A&M and Maryland, but not by much. I thought they would play Pitt tough and they did. Grid neophytes such as Lindsey, Graham. Hendricks saved the day. I’m referring, of course to their lack of playing time thus far which will soon be a matter of history. Surely holes were being opened by Pitt linemen. I wish somebody would let us readers know who our better blockers were. Pitt may well lose to an underrated Notre Dame squad, but will go on to improve each week and win the Big East crown. Despite all the negativity by the Steel City “journalists” the Panther coaches are making changes and the team is getting better. Remember too, gentlemen of the press Pitt won yesterday’s game with two of our better players(Romeus and Lewis out with injuries. I, for one for better things to come. Rev. George of Columbus, where the Buckeyes are “Superstars” no matter who and how they play.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 10.03.10 @ 5:21 pm

Sorry, Rev. Don’t see it. Pitt is up a TD in the fourth against a Sun Belt team and if not for the heroics of Graham, picking up a massive 1st deep in Pitt territory and then the huge run, this could easily have been an L. I didn’t see the game, only listened to it. But I didn’t hear much of a difference in play calling on either side of the ball.

You can’t play scared football and win. And that’s how Wanny approaches football games. Tino clearly has his problems, but I just can’t doubt that part of his hesitancy in making throws is the “don’t make a mistake” motto of his coach.

7-5 sounds like a realistic prediction to me. Hope I’m proved terribly wrong, but doubt it.

Comment by Carmen 10.03.10 @ 6:54 pm

Rev,

I am assuming Pitt improves as the season progresses…but I am also asssuming that UConn, WVU, Cincy are also improving.

WVU and Cincy acquitted themselves quite well against top 10 oppositions (LSU, Oklahoma) respectively.

Even if we split between those teams…there is likely a loss out there somewhere for Pitt with the rest of their BE competition (UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse, USF, Louisville).

that means 5-2 in BE play at best…2-3 after we lose to ND means 7-5.

Hope I too am wrong, but I have seen this man’s (Wanny) work for over a decade (NFL and Pitt).

I think 7-5 will be the best record Pitt can obtain this season.

Hell we may both be right and Pitt wins the BE at 7-5 this year. 🙂

Tied with FIU at halftime. Pitt wore down two Div 2 opponents in the fourth quarter, and that is our season. There is no way this team beats ND, let alone Rutgers, Uconn, Louisville, or WVU. And Syracuse and USF, on the road, are not locks. So if my math is right, Wanny, in his 6th year, will be 5-7, or worse.

And this is a guy who held up the school, his alma mater, the school that he loves, because they did not pony up enough in their first offer in 2004? And Nordy was dumb enough to raise that? Anyone dumb enough to think this program is even in the same breath as Penn State, even with a commitose head coach, is crazy. Even in their worst season.

We deserve better. We may have some talented assistants. Greg Gattuso and Frank Cignetti are excellent coaches. But no assistant can be better than their head coach.

Comment by PO'd Panther 10.03.10 @ 8:31 pm

I agree with PO’d Panther. Pitt’s chancellor & AD are a lot like the guys running Texas Tech. At Tech, they are standing behind Tuberville who is doing about as well at Tech as Wannstedt did his first year at Pitt. Tech ran off Leach in the Craig James-witch-hunt. Next week Brian Kelly’s superior coaching skills will out-smart Wannstedt Kelly’s D will figure out a way to dog Sunseri until the Irish score on a couple of interceptions. Sunseri is just like Wannstedt. Seeing great talent in yourself when it’s mediocre at best is the affliction both Wannstedt and Sunseri have. Is Baldwin having a bad year or is he having to contend with a bad QB?

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.03.10 @ 8:46 pm

We actually look like Notre Dame under Weiss. Apparently lots of talent, but, everyone looks like they’re in a fog. You can just look at the whole picture and say, “somethings wrong down there”. Allthough still sputtering, having watched ND a couple times this year, def. coached better and improving. We may just be in for a real waxing out there!!

Comment by Dan 10.04.10 @ 9:28 am

I dunno maybe this game will be good for us. Kirk Herbstreet said this week when he was breaking down film that ND’s defense was so slow and looked like a high school team, he said they are embarassing on D.

Hello absolutely everyone,

Initial sorry if this isn’t the appropriate category. Please move it if necessary. I would like to ask all of you People if you ever utilised expire domain seek equipment and if yes could you recommend some good equipment to find expired domains and backorder it.

The very best software package would perform like that: browsing domains by PR Page Rank, Alexa, targeted traffic values and date to get expired. It could fetch results from google or other search engine.

At the moment I’m making use of Expired Domain Name tools and it functions fairly good but I will need much more sources like that. Please reply in this thread or drop me a private message if you got any software program but do not like to share in public. link to linktrack.info
