Pitt Wins, And That Is All We Know

One-third of the season is in the books. Pitt sits at 2-2. I have no idea about this team. I have notions, thoughts, opinions and conjecture. But I don’t have any solid sense of this team. Is this a 7-5 team? Are they improving steadily and capable of going 9-3 or 10-2? Somewhere in the middle?

I’ve been reading everyone’s comments from the threads and both positive and negative there are good points made. The fact that four games in, and I don’t feel like I know anymore about this team than when they were 1-1 is really frustrating.

We know more about them than from the preseason as realism forced us to back away from darkhorse top-10 BCS Championship dreams. Aside from that it is a crapshoot. It doesn’t help that the Big East is so weak looking that going 7-0 would not be unthinkable — and still not be considered particularly impressive.

Back to the FIU game. If as Coach Wannstedt likes to say, you throw the ball to score points, and run the ball to win; then just look to that as to the reason Pitt only had a 13-10 lead at the half and only 16-10 in the 4th quarter before FIU was beaten, worn down and lost 44-17.

In the first half, Sunseri just was not good. Only 5-12 and 60 yards or so. He was missing receivers, and staring them down. He has no connection with Baldwin. It may have to do with the routes Baldwin runs and Sunseri feeling like he doesn’t have time to wait for the play, but there is a real problem with Sunseri even trying to get the ball to Baldwin.

Sunseri was throwing to a spot, and the FIU defender read it and planted himself right there. Sure enough, Sunseri through right at him. Shanahan, though, went after the ball and took it away from the defender and got a nice gain. It was a strong move by Shanahan. I didn’t agree with some of the booing I heard of Sunseri early in the game, but I can’t say I feel that much better about him after the game.

He was 10-12 in the second half and finished with 169 yards, and had some nice hook-ups with Devin Street and Mike Shanahan. Shanahan also bailed him out on what looked like a sure interception.

Sunseri did have more time to throw in this game. The reshuffled line seemed to make a difference. It wasn’t just FIU not being very good — after all New Hampshire was able to get some pressure.

Obviously in the running game, there was a little more space. Definitely the blocking for runs was better. It also helped that Ray Graham had a bust out day. Graham had 277 rushing yards, 19 receiving yards and three TDs. In the first half, he had 104 yards. He was Pitt’s offense, and had an epic day.

Despite that and, Dion Lewis missing the game because of an undisclosed shoulder injury — really effective Big East injury policy — Graham will not be the starter this weekend against ND. Coach Wannstedt has made that clear. Old school football. You don’t lose your job because of injury. Wannstedt conceded that Graham should get as many touches as Lewis, though. Figure that means 1/3 of offense will be running Lewis, 1/3 running Graham and1/3 Sunseri passing.

The defense was okay, but they had one very bad quarter where FIU missed chances. The second quarter was maddening for the way Pitt could not get off the field. Defensive penalties, mistakes and looking slow. FIU held the ball for nearly 11:30 in the quarter and converted 5-of-7 third downs. They scored only 10 points in the quarter, in part because they only had two possessions. Both drives took over 5 minutes.

Thankfully, the defense made more plays in the second half, except for that letdown to start the 4th quarter.

Next test is ND in South Bend. That means Brian Kelly and his passing attack against Pitt’s re-tooled linebackers and secondary.

This next game against ND should be considered one of those “Wannstedt can’t win the big game” games even though ND is having an average year themselves. This one, being on national TV once again, will allow Pitt some PR redemption from the butt kickin they received from Miami. Even though the outcome has no direct effect on Pitt’s BCS hopes in the Big East standings, it has major implications regarding this team’s fragile self image and confidence. I still feel that this team has the potential to be really good with the talent that is on the field. Injuries have had their effect already but the flip side of that is some of the second string talent have been given their opportunity to show what they can bring to the table. With such an inexperienced group of starters on both sides of the ball, confidence can be a real “ace in the hole”. This next game could provide that spark that this teams dearly needs to get their collective heads out of where the sun don’t shine. I’m still predicting an 8-4 finish at this point, which is what I predicted at the start of the season, if they lost the first game out in Utah. That one was a confidence buster, the ND game could be the confidence builder that they require going into the BIG East part of the schedule. If Pitt embarasses themselves again this Saturday, Wannstedt should expect to start feeling the heat from a very disappointing season developing, win it and this ND victory should be viewed as a BIG win and potentially a season turner.

Comment by Dr Tom 10.04.10 @ 11:56 am

If Wanny is watching the same games I’ve been watching, if he puts Ray Graham in as the starting tailback, Lewis didn’t lose his job because of an injury, he would have lost because of performance. Ray Graham in ONE GAME ran for nearly double the yards that Lewis accumulated in three games. What the hell do you have to do on a Wannstedt coached team to earn your way into the starting lineup after someone else has been annointed?

Comment by KeithS 10.04.10 @ 12:23 pm

Agree Dr. Tom, but really, we will need to socre a lot of points to beat ND. Miami’s QB is average at best. Their WR’s are fast, but they are not better than ND’s. Miami’s WR’s were wide open all night long. Harris just played pitch and catch with them. I just hope our DL can get to Crist so he can’t sit there and pick us apart. On the plus side, Brian Kelly’s defense’s have proved less than dominant. I’m looking for a shoot-out…Last team with the ball wins. If our offense can win a game like this for us, that should provide a big confidence boost.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.04.10 @ 12:23 pm

Yes, this game is vital to Pitt’s confidence in themselves and in their coach. It’s only a matter of time before they start tuning Wanny out. Losing for the third time on the national stage would also kill recruiting.

Comment by Chuck Morris 10.04.10 @ 12:24 pm

FIU was clearly over-matched on Saturday. Lots of teams beat up on over-matched opponents and still finish 6-5. Sunseri reminds of that kid at Penn State Harris had signed up for Pitt – Anthony Moreilli I believe. Do we know anymore about Notre Dame? They imploded against Stanford like we did with Miami.

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.04.10 @ 12:29 pm

BTW, as long as we are moving players around…How about Hyno to TE and Graham to FB with Dion as TB? Hyno weighs more than Cruz and appears to be a tougher player. Graham does not have the typical size of a FB, but that kid plays hard. This line up would create some interesting challenges for defenses.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.04.10 @ 12:36 pm

Dion Lewis was “annointed” starter? When you run for 1799 yards as a Freshman you clearly haven’t earned the right to be the starting RB. Wanny typically being Wanny not benching a preseason Heisman candidate after a slow start *rolls eyes*

Playing in South Bend is always tough. But I think the Panthers pull it out. ND’s defense isn’t amazing meaning running the ball should be doable.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 10.04.10 @ 12:37 pm

Dropping below .500 with the Notoriety Dames game could be quite the blow in terms of confidence and setting a tone for the rest of the season. 3-2 instead of 2-3 could mean all the difference between a “9-3 or 10-2? Somewhere in the middle?”.

Here’s to a half-full cup of arse-whoopin’.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 10.04.10 @ 12:38 pm

Is it too much to ask that our defensive brain trust might really put together a comprehensive game plan and show multiple looks to ND instead of playing a vanilla base for 90% plus of the plays?

Is that really asking for too much?

If not, I think this game can get ugly quick because I have to give the nod to ND because Kelly is heads and shoulders above Wanny when it comes to coaching ability.

Thoughts?

Comment by Vito the Godfather of Soul 10.04.10 @ 12:39 pm

I think that Graham should start, but they are both very talented and I think that he will go with whoever is the hot back as the game unfolds. My biggest issue is the Tino experiment has to come to an end. I know that Pat Bostick isn’t going to wow anyone, but at least he “sees” the field and actually throws the ball PAST the first down marker. I know that he less mobile and has a hitch in his throwing motion, but he does have confidence and makes quick decisions. He throws the ball down the field!! Imagine that, throwing a ball to a wide reciever…radical stuff. Give me Number 19, not lip service that Tino is on a short leash.
BTW – do you remember who the QB was 2 years ago when we won at South Bend??

Comment by Fear The Mustache 10.04.10 @ 1:21 pm

ND might not be very good this year but it’s still ND on nat’l tv. we lose on sat, or worse get embarrassed, this season is over. who cares if we win the BE? BE is a nat’l joke this year. going to a BCS bowl w/ 3 or 4 losses is pathetic.

Comment by wilk 10.04.10 @ 1:21 pm

Just back from both the Pitt and Steeler games.
A loooong weekend to say the least. Have read most of the comments and I am here to say that if the same Pitt team I saw play Saturday shows up at ND, there is no way we win….none! Big, dumb, undisciplined Pitt team is typical of a Wanny coached team. They did play better in the second half but FIU also wore down. Pitt opens as a 5.5 underdog at ND and it is well deserved. I must say that in my 47 years of watching Pitt football, I have never seen more bizarre officiating than the Sun Belt crew that showed up Saturday…and then stayed over to join Ed Hoculei on Sunday at the Steeler game.
Still, a win is a win…and I think we will value each one this year…I predict there will be only 6 of them.

Comment by Dan 72 10.04.10 @ 1:22 pm

I see Pitt and ND as pretty evenly matched. If this game comes down to coaching, who do you think wins? Kelly or the Stache?

not a hard choice…

Please dont embarrass us again on national TV Dave! And if you do, make sure you blame your players and take no responsibility as per usual.

Comment by Coach Ditka 10.04.10 @ 1:23 pm

If anyone can bad brain a no-brainer, its Wanny — but the formula looks pretty straight forward on this one. Run Graham left, right, and center on ND and he may break Tony D’s golden 303 from way back. But, throw the ball at least 2-3 times on first down in the first half, just to keep ND from putting all 11 guys on the line of scrimmage. They really don’t even need to hit a big one — just scare them with Baldwin over the middle and Shanny on a few slant attempts and that will keep their safeties honest. I really think ND is ripe for a beat down after feeling cocky drubbing BC, but someone needs to grab the clipboard from Wanny’s hands.

Comment by Matt N. 10.04.10 @ 1:46 pm

Glass half-full time: I wasn’t there but I read “we wore them down” a number of times, something FIU’s 3 previous opponents did not.

Comment by steve 10.04.10 @ 2:16 pm

Pitt is off to a really bad start with penalities this year. But turnover wise Pitt is an acceptable 32 in the nation. Last year, Pitt was 27 in the nation in number of penalities and 7 in the nation in turnovers lost. The year before that Pitt was 4th best in penalty yards per game, which would mean that the team isn’t that undisciplined generally.

And Wanny against the genius that is Brian Kelly is 1-2 with two close losses. And in the one win Cinci was ranked while Pitt was unranked. Clearly Kelly owns Wanny in coaching.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 10.04.10 @ 2:28 pm

We established that we can be a player in the Sun Belt…wonder if they’re thinking about expansion.

Comment by Pittastic 10.04.10 @ 2:28 pm

Glass half-full squared:

“A very physical team up front, and their offensive line definitely won the line of scrimmage [Saturday].”

The announced attendance for the game was 45,207. Exactly the propaganda many of us predicted. There were no more than 20,000 fannies in those seats. There were people standing outside of Heinz begging people to let them GIVE them tickets. It’s all about the money folks. Regardless of what Wanny does the rest of the year he has lost the fan base, and probably the team. When the money dries up, then and only then, there is a chance Wanny walks the plank. Give him credit, has was coaching like crazy on Saturday on the sideline so he must be feeling at least some heat. He will win enough games this year to provide Nordy the cover necessary to keep him on and we will go through this all over again in 2011. The only difference being many of us will be in our recliners instead of Heinz.

Thank you Steve. YOU provided the annswers to the questions I was asking during and AFTER the Pitt rout of the “Golden Panthers Saturday last. Nowhere was I able to find in the PG posts which side Ray Ray was scooting. Nor could I comer up with which Pitt blockers were excelling. In referring me to the Miami Herald you provided the data. As far as the Columbus Dispatch is concerned they NEVER even mention the Pgh. lads. Not jusy Saturday, but anytime. And that prejudice does not exist just for college football, but for any of the Steel City’s sports. So now I know some of the details of Pitt’s win. Steve, you should apply for a position at a sports desk in “Da ‘Burg”. Rev. George

I missed the game this weekend because I was in the Bahamas on vacation 🙂

From what I have read online, the game was pretty close until Pitt pulled away in the fourth quarter. That’s not surprising to me given the way we have played this year and FIU’s tough games against Texas A&M, Maryland and The State University of New Jersey. I wanted to get all of your thoughts on the game.

How was the offensive and defensive playcalling? Did we play the basic 4-3 the majority of the game? How did DeCicco look at weakside LB?

How was the defensive line rotation? Did Clemmings play well?

Did Williams see the field at all or was Gary in the entire game?

Did Tino make any strides?

How did Gibbs do and what was the offensive line rotation like?

Thanks guys

Comment by Jason05Pitt 10.04.10 @ 3:29 pm

I don’t know what else to say about the game, but I wanted to get my complaints in about forced parking. Gold Lot 1A: we’ve been there since Heinz Field opened. We get there early so we can get the spot we like. Not this time…crammed in cheek to jowl with every other newcomer. Bad enough that they do this but the attitude from the lot attendants and the big cop who was twirling his billy club like he was ready to pound the heads of these evil parkers was worse.

Bad enough we have to watch a mediocre (at best) team, but then to make the tailgating no fun either isn’t going over well with me and a lot of other season ticket holders. I don’t know if it’s Pitt’s fault or the city’s fault but it needs to be fixed, and soon.

Comment by Russ 93 10.04.10 @ 3:33 pm

@Wally: Sure, 45K is way too high, but there were more than 20K in attendance. I’d put it at about 30-35K. In any event, huge drop off from what it should have been.

Comment by bdpanther 10.04.10 @ 3:33 pm

wally:
Your assessment seems right. Throughout the game the ESPN3 cameras showed lots of yellow that did not fill up. The only way to get Nordenberg and Pederson’s attention is through the wallet. They won’t listen to anything else.

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.04.10 @ 4:24 pm

@Wally, if you want to make things up to prove your point feel free to do so. But, I was at the game and there were clearly more than 20K in the stands, more along the lines of 35K like bdpanther says. I’d imagine the 45K number is actually sold tickets, which a lot of teams use for attendance. I was actually surprised by the number of people there. It was more than the typical game against a small school gets, and I would know I’ve been to nearly every home game at Heinz field. So the claim that Wanny has lost the fan base seems to be a gross exageration. And he’s lost the team because it isn’t as if the team played better as the game progressed and just dominated the 4th quarter.

How was the offensive and defensive playcalling? Did we play the basic 4-3 the majority of the game? How did DeCicco look at weakside LB?
—Offensive play calling, not so good. Let’s see Cignetti called a screen pass and a shovel pass in a two minute drill in the first half. He did call a better game in the second half. They really need to let Sunseri throw the ball around, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
—Defensive play calling, nothing really stood out to me
—DiCicco looked solid
Did Tino make any strides?
—Terrible first half, I think he was 2-9, but then rebounded in the second half. I wouldn’t say he made strides though, but at least he showed he could overcome a bad start.

How did Gibbs do and what was the offensive line rotation like?
—Offensive line looked better overall to me. But hard to tell considering the competition.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 10.04.10 @ 4:52 pm

Some of the comments here are ridiculous.

There were more than 20 thousand people at Heinz Field. It looked pretty slim at the start of the game, but a lot of people came in near the kickoff. I’d say 40 thousand minimum.

Also, I like the idea of having Graham and Lewis sharing the carries. Maybe Lewis’s injury slowed him down a few games…but a player doesn’t run for nearly 1,800 yards as an accident.

The offensive line looked better running the ball with Gibbs in there. Pitt is primed for another victory at ND. It’s time for Baldwin to shine. It’s one of his last chances on national TV before the draft.

Comment by Brian 10.04.10 @ 5:02 pm

Bostick already beat ND once… think about that Saturday night after the game.

If this offense fails, the boo birds will definitely call for Tino’s head come Rutgers.

Comment by Brian 10.04.10 @ 5:25 pm

Let’s see if I have this right. DW is a Pitt man with (apparently) no aspirations to move elsewhere. He monitors his players to insure that they attend class. He expects his players to be good citizens and good representatives of the university. DW has recruited some top notch talent. His team won 10 games last year and came close to winning another two. Yet many on this blog want to can him, like all one has to do is run an ad in the employment section of the newspaper and Bingo, a national championship team graduating Phi Beta Kappa’s and clergymen. (ND hired the genius Charlie Weis the same year Pitt hired DW. ND probably receives more applications for a coaching job than Pitt. BTW, looking at ND’s record, there is a chance that Brian Kelly won’t be named Coach of the Year this year.)

Comment by BigGuy 10.04.10 @ 5:44 pm

40,000? I guess there are three kinds of people: those who can count and those who can’t.

The point was hyperbolic in that they have to misrepresent things like attendance to sell the program instead of getting a coach who knows what to do with a recruit once he gets one.

Let me know where they sell those rose colored glasses because I would take Mike Gottfried back in a New York minute over the mess we have now.

Comment by wally 10.04.10 @ 6:22 pm

I don’t know about this game, and, maybe it is tickets sold this year, but they have fudged the numbers of attendees forever at Pitt. The only time they don’t have to fudge is WVU, PSU or ND. I can remember them doing that at Pitt Stadium, held 56,500, they would announce 51k, and clearly, both endzones from the 10yd line circling around to the other 10 yd line were completly empty, except for some kids makin’ out and laying in the sun. Steve has kept that tradition going strong.

Comment by Dan 10.04.10 @ 7:18 pm

You know, I take that back about tickets sold, because if it is, that is still wrong. Attendance…..how many people attended the game, not how many bought tickets. Maybe they just shouldn’t announce, because, for quite a few people, it’s a big funny joke, “well Bill, how many people are here”, “I’d say around 25-30k”, “how many do you think they’ll say are here?” “about 51k” ha ha, ho ho, just quit announcing it.

Comment by Dan 10.04.10 @ 7:21 pm

BigGuy, I here ya…for the record, there is already a fire Brian Kelly website! Fans in general give coaches far too much credit for winning and too much blame for losing. Urban Meyer was all the rage for a while…Has he lost his touch? Clearly Saban out coached him because Alabama drilled Florida, right? Or could it be that Alabama is just a better team this year…Mack Brown..fire that bum. First he gets drilled at home by an unranked opponent, then he loses to Oaklahoma! Clearly the game has passed him by. He should get on the bus out of town with JoePa. If only we could be good like Utah and only have to play about 3 or 4 games a year against teams that have a chance in hell of beating us! Same goes for Boise State and their great coach. Pitt is not a southern football factory, never was and never will be. There is a reason why Pitt has only won one national championship in the last 40 years (yeah, I know wally, its because of DW!). We have never been a destination program for any coach other than DW. We have rarely been a destination program for top players. One definite reason for that has to be the less than impressive college football fan base in and around Pittsburgh. I posted this here many times, when PSU was bad, really bad in the early 2000s, they still drew well over 100,000 fans to every game. All these schools with coaches that you lust for (Alabama, Floriday, ND, Boise, Utah), win or lose their fans show up! Where will you be when we play RU on Oct 23? Will you be complaining in your living room; or, will you be contributing at the stadium by making some noise every time RU has a third down?

Comment by HbgFrank 10.04.10 @ 7:23 pm

Hate to do three in a row, but, computer down at work, and I have to go out shopping. To the fella above, with all due respect, he may not have lost the fan base yet, that’s debatable. Have another debacle on national t.v., especially with the Steelers off to a good start, and the Pens starting on Thursday, you can kiss a heavy part of the fan base goodbye. Hope they don’t crap themselves again. I bleed blue and gold, but, another blowout or poor performance Saturday, enough is enough!!!

Comment by Dan 10.04.10 @ 7:25 pm

Going into last year, the question marks were the O-line and QB, but both played better than expected, however the defense disappointed a bit.

It seems just the opposite this year. Again the QB and O-line are question marks and have disappointed, but I like the defense considering allof the injuries.

The other big disappointment is the large amount of penalties, especially pre-snap. This was not a problem the last 2 years, and the only thing I can think of is the uncertainty that many of these players have when they line up

Comment by wbb 10.04.10 @ 7:59 pm

Once again we have enough ball players to win this game, however the question I throw out to everyone is “will the head ball coach have the boys ready?” I say based on his track record and what has happened this year, no. Just except people. Its hard and painfull to take this guy any much longer as coach. Can he just for once have the boys ready? Please, is that asking for too much?

Comment by Lou 10.04.10 @ 8:19 pm

Had a 6 hour drive home from Steelers/Pitt to think about the games. Was not angry at the Steelers…disappointed yes, angry no. They gave it their all and got beat by a team that played slightly better. I was again, furious with Pitt and DW…and they won. Why, because the lack of focus, organization and attention to detail by the Pitt Football Staff headed by DW. We (I) have every right as a fan of 47 years and a season ticket holder for many of them,to demand a football team that appears to know what they are doing i.e. have a plan…and then carrying it out.I do not expect a win every week, especially when our opponent is clearly supperior, but I do expect a good showing and a coaching staff trying to get the best result every Saturday on the football field. In 6 years, patterms emerge and I personally do not like those patterns by the team wearing Blue and Gold. Put an exciting winning team on the field that plays sharp focussed football and win or lose, there will be a sold out stadium quite often. The pain of having to watch Wanny teams struggle can be overwhelming.
I read it every week in these columns. Please, no more apoligies for DW.

Comment by Dan 72 10.04.10 @ 10:30 pm

Pitt is 2-2 and I argue I know enough about them-
They’re an average team that underachieves. So far that the proscription. Pitt can beat the mediocre, hang with the good, and get crushed by the elite. Could they lose to a team like UNH? Sure, but they would have to play pretty bad. Could they beat Maimi? Sure, but they’d have to play phenomenally. I’m not off the Pitt wagon yet, I still think they should be favored in all their games (doesn’t say much about the BEast), and should be in the BCS hunt up until Dec 4th.

Lets face it, our team has hit a lot of bad luck since camp opened. I mean every team has roadblocks, but we have had many injuries, distractions and ill timed inconveniences. I’m not making excuses, but its hard to blame it all on DW & staff.

That said, I’m still not in panic mode. Many people are peeved because Pitt lost two “big games” but the actually meaningful games aren’t even here yet. Some downplay a Big East title, but sorry, thats our conference and even if they went 0-4 OOC, a BCS bid is all people remember.

Comment by tacocat 10.04.10 @ 10:58 pm

The comparisons about Urban Meyer and MacK Brown with Pitt’s situation are like comparing elbows to assholes. They have produced, Wanny has not!

Comment by Pittastic 10.05.10 @ 6:15 am

Y’know, what this team needs is…

Ah, the hell with it.

Comment by Spanky 10.05.10 @ 8:13 am

If they announce PAID attendence then they aren’t techinically misrepresenting. And like people have pointed out Pitt has always done that with attendence so it isn’t some conspiracy to protect Wanny.

Reality check:
BOSTICK vs ND…
14/27 3 INTs, 1TD. I’ll remember that on Satuday night when Pitt beats ND with Tino.

Shady 32 carries for 169 yards.
Connor Lee 5/5 on FGs.

Pointing out facts and stats is not apologizing. People just want to believe what they want to believe. I post stats while other people post their feelings. I’ll take stats over feelings any day.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 10.05.10 @ 8:22 am

how are people jumping ship already? we lost to 2 top 15 teams so far, those are not bad losses. Pitt was in both of those games. its growing pains with a new QB, look at psu almost losing to Temple, the same Temple BE kicked out…
to much negativity surrounding pitt…whould you rather be 4-0 and player 4 no names?

Comment by mike 10.05.10 @ 8:46 am

HbgFrank, let me address a few of your points from above:

“Urban Meyer was all the rage for a while…Has he lost his touch? Clearly Saban out coached him because Alabama drilled Florida, right?”

– Yes, Florida got blasted by Alabama, the number one team in the country. Meyer is 57-10 with 2 national championships and three 13 win seasons while playing in the toughest conference in football. He gets a pass for a bad loss here and there. What is DW’s record after 5 seasons? How many national titles do we have to brag about? How many conference titles? etc…At the end of the day Florida fans can accept a bad loss because they’ve had the big time success. Pitt has not.

“Mack Brown..fire that bum. First he gets drilled at home by an unranked opponent, then he loses to Oaklahoma! Clearly the game has passed him by.”

– Much like my comments about Urban Meyer, when you achieve a certain level of success you get a few free passes. DW has not eanred that. Lets not forget, Texas and Florida play in far more difficult conferences than the Big East. Perhaps if we were in a tougher conference, DW may get more slack.

“If only we could be good like Utah and only have to play about 3 or 4 games a year against teams that have a chance in hell of beating us! Same goes for Boise State and their great coach.”

– I think Pitts schedule is not much more difficult (if at all) than Boise or Utah. The difference is that when these teams get their chance on the big stage they deliver. Utah spanked Pitt in 2004 and embarrased Alabama in 2009. And by the way, Utah has won 9 straight bowl games…Pitt has only been to two in the last 6 years (in the weak ass Big East). As for Boise, they beat Oklahoma in the 07 Fiesta Bowl and beat TCU in the 2010 Fiesta. Boise is 6-4 in bowl games since 1999.

As for Brian Kelly, give him two years and you will see Notre Dame as a top ten team again. The guy is a winner and once he gets his own recruits in place you will see a change. And he will do it playing a much tougher schedule than DW will ever face.

So bottom line, DW has not eanred the right to be cut any slack. He has recruited top level talent and competes in one of the weakest conferences in college football. We have the right to expect more from this program at this point. I’ve defended DW many times on this board so Im not your typical Fire wanny guy. At some point though you have to be realistic and ask yourself if this is a guy who gets more or less out of the talent around him?

And an “amen” to Lou, Dan, and Coach Ditka.

Hey, I have a suggestion for Steve Pederson. Why not fire DW and hire either Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly, two of the “great” coaches cited herein? (Charley Weis may also be available if ND doesn’t get to him first.)

After a Pitt loss, I am incensed, irritated and frustrated. My feelings last for about a week. I am the same way when Pitt loses a basketball game; however, that lasts for about two days.

Coach Ditka hit the nail on the head.

Baldwin needs to go after the ball and come down with it. Our QBs are not going to hit him right in the hands in stride every time. Just use your body and come down with a few to really help our offense. Look at Shanahan. Baldwin did it last year but so far not this year. We need a big game from him and Dion against the Irish

A big right on to Coach Ditka

I say Pitt wins by 10 this weekend. ND coming off a road win will lay down this week at home.

Would be great for Frank Cig getting Ray and Dion on the field same time. A little shotgun with them lined up on each side. Use for run or for blocking or jump them to the flat for short pass. Shotgun may help Tino see the field better. Would be nice to surprise the other team for once. But…I don’t see this happening.

Coach, clearly I was being sarcastic to make a simple point…I was not saying that those coaches are unsuccessful or that DW was a better coach. Its not only about the coaches. If it was, Urban Meyer and Mack Browns teams would never get drilled like they did….Utah and Bosie both have far superior talent on their team for the vast majority of games they play. The proper analogy would be to put Texas or Florida in the Big East with the talent they now have and then rant and rave about how great they are…Coach, Wally, Pittastic, and James Brown: Where will you be on October 23?

Comment by HbgFrank 10.05.10 @ 1:02 pm

I agree with Mike. Bottom line is we lost to 2 top 15 teams. We should have beaten one. The other didn’t beat us as badly as the score would indicate…if not for a muffed punt by Cam Saddler, we would have had the ball at midfield (roughly) in a 2 possession game with 10 minutes to play at home. Against a top 15 team.

You may argue that we ourselves were supposed to be a top 15 team, but a) that assumed a healthy All American defensive end would be playing and b) it didn’t foresee the distraction of having multiple idiots get in trouble with the law/kicked off the team.

As for the attendance, who cares? No one can really control who comes to games. Win a ton and maybe people will show. Lose and they won’t. That simple.

The season starts in earnest on October 16. Until we start to lose those games that we SHOULD win, let’s not start jumping ship.

Too many analogies. Pitt has crapped itself on national tv 2 out of 2 times. Please quit telling me how great the Utah game was, we looked like a JV team for 3 quarters. We were in a fog, looked pathetic. It’s been 6 years. We should be WINNING games against Utah, Miami and Notre Dame, who cares if we beat South Florida and Louisville. I could care less if we win the Big East with a 7-5 record and go to a BCS game. Teriffic, maybe we’ll play Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and really show the country who we are!!!!! It’s not just that we lost to two top 15 teams, it’s how pathetic the team, coaches, and players looked doing it. It’s not just fans picking on Wanny, outsiders have said, “yoi, what the hell happened to Pitt”. Funny Joe, and I totally respect your opinion, two opposites I guess, but, probably not really, you can’t wait till Oct. 16th to start, Oct 9th is my last chance. The season starts today, now, this week, show up at South Bend, and beat a mediocre, allthough, much better coached, Notre Dame team and we’ll see. Can’t get excited about UCONN football and Rutgers football, going 0-3 to the national games. I can get that at the local high school games if I just want to watch football for football’s sake. Injuries, freshmen, bad breaks, blah, blah, blah, all teams have those. Excuses to the left, excuses to the right, “we have to quit making penalties, I’m gonna have those guys run laps” yada, yada, yabba, dabba, do, quit with the press conferences, quit with this, quit with that, for crying out loud, win a FRIGGIN’ GAME THAT MATTERS FOR ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This team was over-hyped big time pre-season by the National Media which had us #15 in the AP. Maybe the National Media doesn’t like the Stache. Zeise though knew better, for he had watched training camp on a daily basis and had to have witnessed the big time problems with the O-line and the scattered arm Santino. He predicted that Pitt would lose 3-4 games which NOW even looks like a good season. Regardless of how good Baldwin is or Dion was, if you don’t have a QB to throw to Baldwin or stop a team from putting 8 in the box, it doesn’t matter. If one remembers, in all the training camp scrimmages, this offense couldn’t move the ball hardly at all. Meaning they couldn’t even take advantage of our LB’s & CB’s, which says a lot. A whole lot.
AND ONE FINAL THING, IT’S OKLAHOMA (not Oaklahoma). I’m hoping those that used and repeated that AREN’T PITT GRADS !

XBlackMagicX – Regarding your Reality Check. Your stats are dead on, but Bostick led them to the TD that sent the game to OT with a 37 yard pass to TJ Porter and a 10 yard TD pass to Jon Baldwin. I’ll remember that Saturday while I watch an endless series of check down passes and incompletions at the feet of open receivers.
I will trade 3 interceptions for a win any day of the week.
