Enjoy This Win

Because it’s fairly easy to see that today was probably the last chance we had for a win. We will be heavy underdogs at Rutgers and WVU as well as at home against South Florida. The likely final record looks like 4-8 and a fifth win would be an upset. You’ll see plenty of thoughts on today’s win over Syracuse in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Pitt’s previous and upcoming opponents did interesting things today:

— Michigan State is keeping close with #11 Michigan, only down 4 entering the fourth quarter.

— Cincinnati and USF combined for 45 points in the first quarter and Cinci leads 38-20 in the 3rd quarter.

— Navy is entering a 2nd OT at Notre Dame. (Update: ND loses 46-44, trying to get a two point conversion…though not using plays nearly as bad as Pitt tried to use.)
— Virginia beat #21 Wake Forest, 17-16, and continues to amaze me.

And if you complained after Pitt’s first basketball exhibition, well at least we didn’t lose like #8 Michigan State did.

Anybody watching this Navy-Pitt ga…er, i mean Navy-ND game? Unbelievable.

It’s funny Wanny and that slob played their first game against each other, and although they’ve taken different paths to get there, they’re pretty much in the same spot now…as i write this, its 4th down, nd needs a td and a 2 pt conversion to tie….scores are eerily similar…

They just got the TD…now they need the 2 pt conversion…can Navy come up big for the second time this year, and second time in their history?

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 6:37 pm

they win…and the refs steal it from them. time to try again…

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 6:38 pm

I can’t believe it, that was the worst call I’ve ever seen. They should have called it in our game to if that is interference. The fucking worthless refs obviously have money on ND. Pathetic.

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 6:39 pm

And they lose…just like we did.

Its going to be a funny game next year, Pitt at Navy…

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 6:40 pm

“Pitt at ND” i mean…

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 6:42 pm

Those refs are lucky ND lost anyways…to call a pass interference (that wasn’t obvious) in that situation is horrible.

Comment by Dennis 11.03.07 @ 6:45 pm

Nothing amazes me this year in college football. it just shows that all the carping and complaining early in the season about opponents is a waste of time. Fottball is played on a field not on paper or in the minds of us bloggers. USF looks like they are headed from #2 to last in the BE. Navy beats ND for first time since 1963, MI loses to AS and can still win B10, and rose bowl bid. Uconn is in first place in BE etc etc etc. None of this makes Pitt any better, but when the season is over we can rehash the year with a better perspective. Who knows, maybe we will win 2 of 3 here at the end!!
Hail to Pitt

Tie game. 30s to go. 4th and 8 on the Navy 25.

NOTRE DAME GOES FOR IT????? Does anyone know why Weiss did that?

If you think we made a dumbass play call against Navy, it pales in comparison to this call. The kicker was warming up, he wasn’t hurt. Why did they do that? He was well within FG range.

Comment by Jon C 11.03.07 @ 7:51 pm

Win or lose, I plan on enjoying every minute of these last three games. At least, I think I can afford that much alcohol.

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 11.03.07 @ 8:05 pm

I’m not even close to putting Buttgers or USF in the loss column. Nether is in any way impressive.

Also, I’d gladly throw a fade to a 6’5″ TE being covered by a 5’9″ CB than run a slow developing off tackle play for the conversion with a backup tailback and a crappy offensive line.

Comment by In My Seat 90 Minutes Before Kickoff 11.03.07 @ 8:16 pm

It was the dumbest call i’ve ever seen not to at least try to kick that FG for the win. Much worse than not trying to run Shady (which in retrospect…well…has that worked even 1/4 the time?). He single handily gave Navy the game. Are the ND fans going to try to run him out of town as fast as the Pitt fans are doing to Wanny? How bout Callahan in Nebraska – you think our D is bad…

It could go either way with Rutgers and USF. Depends which team tries to lose more…maybe in 2 weeks we’ll be able to get a single fucking yard when necessary….that’d be nice…

And this sounds crazy, but don’t forget we were tied/beating? WVU at the half last year….not that i think we have a chance…just sayin….

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 8:23 pm

Oh – and MSU collapses, AGAIN. Why the hell can’t we ever play them in the second half of the season? Its just not fair…

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 8:24 pm

im starting to think USF is a winnable game. they are having a Mich St type collapse lately, and they will be going to pittsburgh in late november when it is freezing out.

Comment by matt in orlando 11.03.07 @ 8:25 pm

Off topic – I watched part of the Bulls game and saw Gary’s 2 minutes. Definite flashbacks to last year – he went for a dunk and had the ball knocked out of his hands, and was fouled REALLY hard and went 1-2.

Comment by Kevin 11.03.07 @ 8:55 pm

The ‘cuse game has been discussed here plenty. Close win over a shitty team. That sums that one up.

My thoughts on a few things I’m thinking (warning: this might actually sound optimistic!):

-That UConn loss (providing they hang on against Slutgers) feels A LOT better after seeing how, dare I say, GOOD they wound up being.

-Same with Virginia. Look, we’re not a good team, and they’re not a bad team. We should’ve lost to them and UConn and we did.

-Aside from those two blowouts, anyone but me realize that we are 3 plays away from being 7 and 2?!?!?! I know it doesn’t mean shit now, but MSU and Louisville were both very winnable and went down to the wire. Navy was MORE than winnable, it was fucking WON in OT… and no them beating the Irish today doesn’t make me feel any better about losing to them. Either way, maybe a team with a little more experience wins a couple of those.

-Rutgers and USF are no longer the definite losses I once thought they were. Rutgers hasn’t beaten anyone with much of a pulse outside of USF. And speaking of the Bulls, if we can get a nice cold Pittsburgh day with maybe a little bit of snow when USF brings their team loaded with Florida boys to town, we’ve got more than a shot with the way they’ve been playing lately.

-I know ‘cuse sucks, and the win today was less-than impressive. But I bet if play this same game back in September we wind up losing it.

-I’m not trying to sound naive, and god knows I’m not a Wannstedt apologist… but I do think there’s light at the end of the tunnel fellas.

Pitt has 3 games to play. If we lose all 3, I still think the season was a debacle. If we are competitive and manage to sneak a couple of wins, different story. In my view, most of us jumped the gun based on the direction things appeared to be heading. Let’s let the season play out and judge our coaches on their entire body of work … but Rhoades still needs to go.

Comment by NYC Panther 11.03.07 @ 9:45 pm

I agree with both of you.

I was thinking about it – we’re one yard from beating Navy and 1 yard from tying LU. We can’t get 1 yard at least twice in this game. Couldn’t get it at least twice in the last game. Couldn’t get a yard in the Navy game. We hand the other teams opportunity after opportunity with crap like little penalties here and there. If we just tie up the loose ends, we could be a decent football program again. Its unbelievable how close we are, yet all the breaks are falling the other way. Hopefully these kids learn from their mistakes and stop repeating them. Maybe the coaches work on getting that one fucking yard we’ve been trying to get all year.

I just want us to be competitive in all 3 last games, and if we get and upset or 3, great. Please don’t let us get embarassed again.

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 9:54 pm

Oh – i forgot – it could be worse, we could be ND or Nebraska.

Comment by Stuart 11.03.07 @ 9:56 pm

We will lose all 3, badly, and it will be a debacle.

Comment by geeman2001 11.03.07 @ 9:57 pm

I can guarantee we will win 1 of the next three and maybe 2. We can’t beat WVU, but with the other 2 it’s on. No question we can beat those teams.

Comment by Omar 11.03.07 @ 10:09 pm

Dennis and geeman2001 are going to look stupid.

Comment by Omar 11.03.07 @ 10:13 pm

After watching us fail again today on multiple attempts to gain a yard or two when we needed it in the running game…And watching it all year…And watching ND try 4 straight runs from the 2 against Navy…those two pass plays we ran against Navy at the end of our game with them are looking better and better…maybe the coaches really do know the team better than we do…

Comment by HbgFrank 11.03.07 @ 10:49 pm

PITT
BIG EAST

Comment by ChrisA 11.03.07 @ 11:13 pm

I don’t think we will beat WVU, Rutgers, it is going to boil down to see if we can stop Rice!

USF, pray for snow, likely we lose all 3.

Wanny must make off season coaching changes, Rhoads and Dunn must go!

Last comment what is the common theme for ND and Nebraska?

Ex pro coaches!

Comment by Fats 11.04.07 @ 7:13 am

I hope I look VERY stupid. Unfortunately after watching the swill of yesterday I’m convinced I won’t.

Comment by geeman2001 11.04.07 @ 10:02 am

How ironic that the overriding sentiment prior to opening day, with all the stuff that happened in training camp, many posters voiced that they wanted our PITT team to be more competitive in the games, and now that we are – those same posters are finding other things to bitch about.

If a fan can’t tell that there is a different feeling about the team and how the kids are playing this season – even with the losses, then there is no satisfying them. Considering what we had to go into the season with after the first half of the first game – a true freshman at QB & RB, we are doing quite well.

I’ve no problem with the ‘approach’ of the coaching staff (meaning DW and Cav ) so far, and I’ll trust them when they say that they are handling Bostick and McCoy the best way they know how – and it really is working out to date.

Comment by Reed 11.04.07 @ 2:58 pm

We should be satisfied to be merely competitive vs. Louisville right now — I didn’t b*tch at all about that one. Syracuse, we should trounce.

UConn and UVA, I still think it’s a disgrace to lose like we did. MSU wasn’t horrible considering our QB play. Navy was simply an atrocious loss.

This is a team of good players that is poorly coached.

Comment by geeman2001 11.04.07 @ 5:15 pm

When has any teams record been a factor during The Brawl? Pitt v. Rutgers (dude, its RUTGERS) And South Florida is not Miami…anyone remember a certain Halloween night? I say we win 3 of the last 4 and get a bowl game. Then, next year (with a few new faces on the coaching staff) we make some real noise.
