Pitt Gets 3 Seed

The Selection Show just wrapped up and Pitt was given a 3 seed (full bracket here). It’s the West Regional which doesn’t make a ton of sense to me but I guess it’s the only way we’d be able to play in Columbus or Buffalo as a #3 seed.

Here’s the things to look at:

–The first team we’re looking at is Wright St. out of the Horizon League. They had a record of 23-9, 13-3 in conference with an RPI of 72. They got in after they took down Butler, 60-55, in the Horizon Championship Game. Other than that, I don’t know anything else about them but I’m sure over the next few days I’ll get to know them a bit better.

–Obviously the first thing you notice about our draw is the possibilities of teams we could play down the road. First is a Duke team who probably got bumped up a few seed lines simply because they are Duke.

–If everything after that continues to follow form then UCLA would likely await us. If it necessary to mention the significance of that? Dixon and Howland refuse to schedule one another. This time, they might not have a chance.

Still gotta get past Wright State though. Some people already have this penciled in but as far as I’m concerned any team that makes the NCAA Tourney can beat you on any given night. As the week goes on, we’ll give you as much as we can dig up on WSU.

i hope they dont give us the 12:00 game…..

Big Baby had 26 in the rout of Wright State.

AARON GRAY THIS IS YOUR WAKE UP CALL – YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP FOR A GAME ON THURSDAY AND NOT FUCK THIS UP….AGAIN.

And Vitale has already decided Coach K will coach up his felons and out coach Dixon…So you can pencil in Duke. Windbag.

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 6:42 pm

DOes anyone know when we find out times and stuff?

Comment by Tim Z. 03.11.07 @ 6:44 pm

IF we make it to the duke game, we should have a “jail-out” – everyone show up in their prison-stripes. Although that may make them feel more at home… At least there HAS to mention of stripper rape, DUI, and assault on SEVERAL signs… hopefully behind the basket.

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 6:47 pm

Times are announced later this week, probably tomorrow. Or Tuesday at the latest. Last year, it was listed on espn’s site first and it was the correct time IIRC. Other places I checked last year had the wrong times, and then changed them later that week.

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 6:49 pm

ha…ralph willard is in the west bracket also……

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 6:59 pm

Wright State is no joke. They beat a solid Butler team to get into this tournament (albeit on their home floor).
DaShaun Wood is a tough, quality player. Lightning quick and can shoot, rebound and pass. He’d be getting a lot more press if he was 6′ tall. I’m not sure any of our guards will be able to contain him one-on-one.
I relish the opportunity to play both Duke and UCLA. But let’s not look past the first obstacle. Focus, focus, focus.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 03.11.07 @ 7:03 pm

Dickie V says Duke “rises to the occasion” and beats Pitt. Could Coach K’s dick be any further in his mouth?

Comment by Chris 03.11.07 @ 7:07 pm

According to the Score Card data, Pitt has a 64% chance of beating Wright State and a 51.7% chance of beating Duke. These are not very good odds historically for a 3 seed. We have a tough road ahead.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.11.07 @ 7:08 pm

i dont think duke matches up well against us. if gray can take his happy ass inside and get mcroberts into foul trouble we can win. he doesnt evn have to make layups, just get fouled.

Comment by matt 03.11.07 @ 7:14 pm

i like how vitale says he’s for the “little guy” but then he shoots his load all over duke all the time……….

we lose to teams with big men who challenge aaron gray and teams with fast guards…duke has neither of these…….

lets get past wright st, and then stick it to duke….

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 7:15 pm

Wright State can play, but we should handle them easily…as we have every team that we were expected to handle all season, except the home loss to Lville, which remains for me the most frustrating loss of the year. In the BET championship game, we just plain laid an egg, against a slightly better team. How many times, in all sports, have you seen a championship game go like that. One team just rolls, and the other goes from bad to worse as the game goes on. Gtown shot over 50% for the game, and we shot 26%. Some of that was due to their defense, but most was due to the fact that we just did not make shots, a lot of them! The team will bounce back. I’m not saying that we wil surely beat Duke if we face them, just that we will shoot better than 26% from the floor.

Comment by HbgFrank 03.11.07 @ 7:15 pm

Vitale and Digger already buried us. We have no chance according to them…

So, going back from memory, basing it on the times printed on the tickets this year, i come up with this as my prediction:

Last year, the 3 seed played the 7pm-ish game on thursday in the west bracket, and then played the 2pm-ish game on saturday. Because we ended in teh West again this year, and the ticket times are exactly the same, but we’re the 3 instead of teh 5 seed, the final prediction is:

Thursday 7.30 pm (20 min after 5pm game ends)
Saturday 2.30 pm (20 min after noon game ends)

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 7:15 pm

After that performance last night, I really am shocked we got a #3 seed. I like the bracket. Would love to beat Duke. It would make my year. It would almost make the next round against UCLA anti-climactic.

Comment by Carmen 03.11.07 @ 7:19 pm

stuart – the only problem with your theory (and i could definitely be wrong about this), is that because the games are played in buffalo they will have games at 1215, 245ish, then 715, 945ish…….the first round games are according to where they are played, not the bracket…..

espn just had howland on and didnt ask him about the possibility of playing pitt…..espn sucks….

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 7:22 pm

i would LOVE to beat duke….it would definitely make UCLA a gravy game…….

no one has mentioned that our games are in buffalo…..nice to get the higher seeded games in a home court environment

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 7:23 pm

schoe, you could be right, but the place i found on the internets said that the games at buffalo (and the tickets they were selling) were for 12pm and 5pm, and then 12pm again.

Like I said above, my best prediction.

If we go with your times, we should be 9.45ish and then 2.45ish…

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 7:26 pm

Chas,

We will beat wright state, also can anyone confirm that dixon interviewed for the wright state job while he was an assistant at Pitt?

Comment by Jimbo B 03.11.07 @ 7:29 pm

stuart – usually for the first round there are 3 games around 12PM, then 4 around 2PM, with 1 game at 530ish that isnt on tv on the east coast because of the news – that game is usually the 2nd game out west (not the west bracket, i think there are first round games in sacramento), because they dont want teams playing at 9 in the morning…..then you’ve got 4 from 7-8 and 4 thats start afterwards………

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 7:34 pm

Well, HSBC’s arena says the times will be announced tomorrow, so I guess we’ll see.

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 7:37 pm

One last thing, i have been watching dickhead vitale since the 80’s, he has not changed a bit, same old lines, same old shit. Time to retire, Dickie V, he sucks too much acc dick. Sorry, but you can only take it so long.

I like our chances, see you in buffalo.

Comment by Jimbo B 03.11.07 @ 7:38 pm

gotta love espn….they whine and whine for years about how mid-majors dont get any love in the tourney….and now, that the mid-majors are making it, they whine and whine about how teams like syracuse and florida st. dont make it….

make up your mind world-wide leader……

Comment by schoe 03.11.07 @ 7:49 pm

Schoe – ESPN probably didn’t ask Howland the question because they (and everyone else) knew what the answer would be. Howland would say that they’re not looking past Weber State and Dixon isn’t looking past Wright State.

Of course, after the interview ended, Rece Davis mentioned the possibility of UCLA-Pitt in the Sweet 16.

Comment by Sean 03.11.07 @ 7:50 pm

before the brackets even came out i predicted a matchup against UCLA. the committee loves doing crap like that. didn’t they set up ttech and indiana a couple years back…

Comment by cousin j 03.11.07 @ 8:00 pm

We beat Duke in what is hopefully a home crowd advantage for us.

Comment by Kevin 03.11.07 @ 8:12 pm

Deenis, We are in the west because GT blocked us from the east. I believe that the rule is that two conference teams can’t meet before the elite eight round. ND actaully caused a problem for us in the Midwest and Louisville in the South. That left the West. Of course the committee could have switched ND and Lville, but I’m sure there were other similiar concerns with ACC teams etc. Too much for my brain to handle tonight. The seeding rules are very complicated when it comes to other teams in your region and eventually match ups prior to the round of 8. Also, the POD system that works in Pitt’s favor as a three seed. They get to play in Buffalo, which is the closest site and favorble location.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.11.07 @ 8:18 pm

A tid bit from the Pitt Athletic Department for all thos bloggers that run down the Pitt program.

Pitt is one of only 12 programs nationally and the only Big East team to advance to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last six seasons. Those schools include: Arizona, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Pitt, Southern Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin

Comment by TMGPanther 03.11.07 @ 8:28 pm

Don’t count on a Home crowd against Duke. They travel in large numbers and have a ND like subway fan base. However, they also attract a lot of duke haters and this should work in Pitts favor.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.11.07 @ 8:30 pm

What TMGP said, Duke is the supreme bandwagon bball school. Anyone who can’t spell college, has gone to any community college, or even received a GED *LOVES* duke. Especially criminals and rapists – who couldn’t cheer for a school just like you. I’m sure they’ll be there, driving up ticket prices. They have more fans than graduates. Hopefully they don’t attack any of our players on the court, although it would benefit them to break Gray’s nose too.

Comment by Stuart 03.11.07 @ 8:44 pm

I may be ousting myself a little here. I generally try to stay quiet when Duke comes up but… I am a Pitt grad and now a Duke PhD student. I am a Duke season ticket holder and so I have seen a lot of them this year.

To me Pitt is clearly the better team. Duke is not athletic, big or deep. Gray should have no problem making McRoberts look foolish. McRoberts is a great passer but he has no ability to take someone on down low. Duke also struggles at times to run a half court offense. They are young and settle for outside shots.

I’m not saying it will an easy game but I’m not worried as long as Higgins is out of the equation.

Comment by Shablinky 03.11.07 @ 8:48 pm

I sure wish we were the 3 seed in the Midwest. I believe Oregon has the easiest route of all the three seeds and we have the hardest. As they say, you need to beat the best to be the best.

Comment by TMGPanther 03.11.07 @ 9:07 pm

schoe, you’re right about the first time – espn has our first game against wright state listed at 9.40pm on thursday night.

I would have rather gotten GU’s 2 seed.

Comment by Stuart 03.12.07 @ 12:29 am

And Duke Vitale picked douche to beat us, and UNC to win it all. Does he have anything to say that makes sense? He is such a tool…

Comment by Stuart 03.12.07 @ 12:30 am

And then I look on the NCAA site and it says the game is at 8.30 pm….so take your pick i guess.

Comment by Stuart 03.12.07 @ 12:38 am

If it’s 8:30 chances are some software hasn’t been updated yet to account for the latest DST changes…it’s 9:30 alright.

Comment by baudolino 03.12.07 @ 12:48 am

Did anyone else watch Dick Vitale pick Duke over Pitt saying that Duke will “Not have it easy with Anthony Grant’s team” and would beat us.

Note to Dick Vitale:

His name is Aaron Gray.

Douchebag.

(The video of it is up at espn360.com under the Bracketology: West Region)

Comment by Steve 03.12.07 @ 3:06 am

Anthony Grant is Virginia Commonwealth’s coach who Duke plays in the 1st round – some sites are picking that as an upset.

Comment by Kevin 03.12.07 @ 5:54 am

steve, who’s the douchebag now???

Comment by paulhackett 03.12.07 @ 6:33 am

Why all the talk about Duke? This is an emlimination tourney. Lose once and your out. Forget about Duke because if Pitt does not beat W. State, playing Duke is moot.

The better question to ask is what Pitt team will show up Thursday?

Comment by Kenny 03.12.07 @ 10:15 am

I can’t resist this….The answer to paulhackett’s question above is: paulhackett!

Comment by CouchesOfMorgantown 03.12.07 @ 11:29 am

oh, couchesofmorgantown, that is soooo nice of you to protect steve, come to his defense…..
