8pm, ABC

To go from 90+ degrees for a good portion of the week to 50s-60s with rain expected today. That’s something.

I suppose the rain might, um, dampen the eagerness for some to get to the stadium to tailgate early. Potentially making the expected traffic snarls a little less immediate. Who knows, maybe the Pirates will be rained out. Of course, knowing ALCO they would still keep people from the lots until 5pm and have the Pittsburgh Police enforce the no tailgating between 1:30 and 5 rule.

Last Pitt night game I attended, where it rained was the one in Akron. It’s taken three years for my daughter to have any interest in attending another game (she’s coming with me to the Duke game in October). Hopefully, Pitt comes out with a win tonight as well.

Not sure how this game plays out. Other then sloppily.

Both teams still have plenty of questions. It’s cliche, but still true.

PSU surviving against App State was either a “wake-up call” or a klaxon going off that there are some problems on what is a young but very talented team.

Pitt warmed up against a middling, 1-AA program. The secondary gave up yards, but not points. Offensively, the second half either was them taking the foot off the gas; or being stymied by some halftime adjustments by Albany. Hopefully the former, but a little of the latter could have been mixed into the stew.

I’m excited for the game, though. A night atmosphere. Big game. Bragging rights over my parents are at stake.

Grilling up flank steak sandwiches for today. Steak’s been marinating for a day. Some fresh tomatoes, onions, peppers (green, jalepeno and super-hot) from the garden. Melt the provolone on the bun that is lightly toasted.

Beat State.

Hail to Pitt!

Hey, POD – here’s tomorrow”s headline for you to dream about:

“Pitt D Slams QB Early;
Penn State Disappears Without a Trace!”

Watching the forecast, I was also thinking about Akron. And, like Akron, I can expect my wife to head to a bar at halftime while I sit there getting doused, watching Pitt win a sloppy game.

It’s asking a lot for Pickett to beat 2 top 10 teams in his only 3 starts. Best of luck to him & his teammates H2P

Worst Special Teams play in Div. 1 history…

Ask yourself as you continue to watch… “Is this a WELL-Coached Team?”

Could someone tell me why I should ever go to another game. Totally out maned and out coached. Duque sting!!!!

Comment by Jp 09.08.18 @ 11:40 pm

my fears from last year true tonight Pickett is not a D1 QB. The Miami game was smoke and mirrors. Pickett does not have the arm strength (long pass interception) to make a decent team get out of an 8 man box.
The only hope is although Town has traveled to 3 schools, like Savage, hire a psychologist and a QB coach which Pitt desperately needs, and hope the talent that got him rated among the top 3 QB’s at USC and #2 at 2015 elite QB camp.

Despite the weather conditions it was obvious again that Pickett can run to escape a collapsed pocket but can not throw beyond 20 yards with any accuracy. Simply look at him on the field and he look a boy among men.

Narduzzi should be on a thread. Hire the coach at Troy , young, dynamic, looking for a step to a HC job in SEC. Lets give him the chance.

Comment by Dennis Wagner 09.08.18 @ 11:49 pm

The man is not head coach material.
Instead of worrying about coaching he looked like a high school guy yelling at the refs and got flagged for it. Big F-ing deal, he looked stupid .
Out coached
Out played. Both lines were terrible. No QB protection. No rushing of the PSU QB.

No special teams at all, both kickers were terrible. The punter looked as if he never played the position, I believe he hasn’t.

14 penalties for real. That’s a result of very poor coaching.
The strength and conditioning coach running up and down on the sideline looking like a complete ass yelling at the refs. Crap like that does nothing but cause confusion.
Pickett is still a good QB but has no offensive line to block for him.
The recruiting is terrible and it shows.
Lucky if they win 4 or 5 games.
The AD signed this guy a contract extension last year and we are now stuck with assistant coach material.

On a national level Pitt is a joke and totally irelavant. I don’ think that is going to change. If they do not beat GT this could be a 3 win season.

Comment by Jp 09.09.18 @ 3:36 am

once again embarrassed on national television. Gave the game away with dumb, dumb mistakes. Coaching is not there … yet. we’ll have to endure a few more years before the next change but it may not make a difference as Pitt fades in to oblivion

Comment by xkegroller 09.09.18 @ 8:34 am

I disagree with Pickett’s ability as a QB. As in the Miami game last year the positive plays he makes are when he takes too long to get the ball out but he scrambles from the rush for yardage.
As witnessed by his long pass attempt last night, an easy interception at the Pitt goal line he does not have D1 arm strength or size.
Pitt has no choice but too play Town top QB who has made personal errors by being unwilling to wait his turn at USC, and Arkansas (big time programs) that would not offer a sclarship to Pickett.
Remember his history top 5 QB in 1995 H.S. #2 QB at elite QB camp in 95 behind starting QB at Alabama.
Tell him it’s his job he need not look behind about another 5* QB coming into the program. Assure him to let his physical skills take over and not worry about making any errors, because behind him are 3 qb’S THAT WILL BE TRANSFERRING OUT OF THE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR. It’s his job for 2 years if he grabs it.
Also he must remember not to get frustrated because of the talent he is working with, this is Pitt, not Alabama, USC, or Arkansas. So mistakes come with the territory.

Comment by Dennis Wagner 09.09.18 @ 9:21 am

Hopefully the big donor Heather brought onto the field had a few bucks on him to buy our guys the sticky gloves that players wear nowadays.

Comment by 2$Chuck 09.09.18 @ 10:00 am

Dennis Wagner,
The offensive line provided no protection to the QB. Pickett had no confidence and had to run for his life on most of the pass plays.

PSU QB had all day to throw the ball.

This whole mess is at the feet of the head coach. Head coach he is not.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.09.18 @ 10:07 am

Georgia Tech will run all over Pitt next week. Another game over at half-time.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.09.18 @ 10:08 am

The Duzzi’s after game press conference was pathetic. His over all answer was that he and his coaches would have to watch the tape to see what happened. We watched the game from the stands and do not need to see the tapes to see what happened. A team poorly prepared and poorly coached.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.09.18 @ 10:11 am

Hardly worth attending the game with bronchitis.
This game showed several things, First our special teams were atrocious – the Aussie with bad holds, fumbles etc led to a 20 point swing. That was too much to overcome. Doesn’t it rain down under? Kickoffs sucked to and return game as well. Simply but a butt kicking in special teams. The problems didn’t stop there.
The offense was atrocious as well but I lay that on Watson more than Pickett who was only allowed one pass attempt of more than 10 yards and that was intercepted. The 4th and 3 call showed absolutely no imagination. That was the ball game. Due to bad field possession and a fear to throw in the rain Pitt;s offense ground to a halt in the second half – PedState could put 11 in the box and doing that a single back offense and not throwing long spelled failure. So many three and outs left the defense on the field too long.
This team was ultimately let down by Narduzzi and his staff. Heck the players even blew the coin flip. Ugh.

Wonder what the temp is like in Savannah?

Comment by PittofDreams 09.09.18 @ 12:01 pm

I’ll keep this short and sweet and will not comment again until November ( basketball season ). Narduzzi is simply in over his head as a football coach. It has been affirmed what we have during his tenure ( Kevin Stallings with eyeglasses !) We would seriously struggle with W&J or Gannon…this will require another huge contract buyout in ordrt to stop the downward spiral of ineptitude. What high school kid would even consider Pitt after last night ?

Comment by Daddylonglegs 09.09.18 @ 12:26 pm

My best move was to leave at halftime. I was totally disquested with the 4th down call and their 2nd I knew what was coming. Play calling was terrible. Piickett was getting no time in th pocket so why not some roll out and short passes to a TE. Why do we put ourselves through this every year.

Comment by Jp 09.09.18 @ 5:18 pm

Can we go down to FCS! My god 30 years of this crap. If we cannot be anything in FBS go to FCS. We would have Duquesne, Robert Morris and St. Frances as real rivals. Do any of us really care about playing NC State, Duke, Virginia? We would have a chance to be nationally relevant at FCS. My grandchildren will be dead before Pitt matters on the national stage.

Comment by PittinTampa 09.09.18 @ 5:54 pm

I see a total of 4, maybe 5 wins, tops on the schedule. How long before either Heather fires Narduzzi or the ACC gives us the boot?

Anytime you want to see Pitt lose by 30 or more, just have them play on national TV and bring in all old Pitt greats to the game.If I was a betting man…

Comment by Jackagain 09.09.18 @ 8:35 pm

WE most likely lost a good 50%of our recruiting class for next year. Oh Iam sorry, maybe not, they are all 3 star recruits that no one else will be going after.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.10.18 @ 12:16 am

As for the punter; saw this kid try to punt during the spring game and he had trouble handling the snaps and was a poor kicker. I think they recruited this kid entirely site unseen and some assistant was contacted by a buddy to sell the kid to the program. We got him now.

The negativity on this board is fascinating. Suck it up and cheer for your Panthers.

Fire Narduzzi. Hire a real HEAD Football Coach.

How’s that for advice?

Comment by PittofDreams 09.10.18 @ 8:55 am

This is another bad defense from our defensive expert head coach.

Comment by Chris 09.10.18 @ 10:46 am

So here’s the thing. Losses happen. They can be- and are- accepted. But what happened Sat. was an embarrassment. There’s a big difference. It’s one of those games that often becomes a turning points in a coach’s career. The number of fans against Duzzi just went way, way up. You can’t represent any school like that. It gets you on the hot seat sooner than later. This game will be brought up and remembered by ticket holders and alumni until Duzzi either wins a lot of games or is eventually fired. Turning point game. That was bad. Fans and previous Pitt athletes are all over the coaches and administration on twitter. It’s definitely the worst it has been since he was hired. Such a shame, but that can’t happen.

Comment by Pitt of Glory 09.10.18 @ 1:44 pm

He is not a head coach. Still acts like an assistant or a high school coach. Hell the man got a sideline warning and didn’t even know it, minutes later he is given a 15 yarder for getting on the field. How could you be a head coach on the sideline and not even know your team got a sideline warning right in front of you. The reason is he was mouthing to the refs. instead of concentrating on the game situation. Folks its bad, real bad.

And now for more BREAKING NEWS…

Joey Porter (Son of Steelers Coach) announces he is headed to Penn State.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.11.18 @ 8:40 am

Just getting the coin toss right and Nardog keeping his cool will be a Pitt improvement.
