A Frankenstein Monster of a Game

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:51 pm

If you stayed for the entire game, why? My friends in the stands bailed early in the 3d quarter. When I met them after the game — they gave props to me for staying the entire time. Even though I was dry and warm in the press box.

By the time I met them in a Northside dive, it was late and I was just hoping they were ready to go back to crash. Nope. We stayed out until 2. I’m not built for that any longer. That realization that over the last few years, the number of times I’ve gotten up for something (job, travel, trip) around 2-3 am far, far exceed the number of times I’ve stayed up that late. Not sure when that flipped, but it has decisively.

Needless to say, I’ve been sleeping a bit since that night.

Is there anything to say about the game?

Nothing good.

I was thinking about how to contextualize the game. It was such an obscenity, that I don’t think you can merely compare it to one tragic, miserable game. It had so many elements. It is a singular mess of a game, that defies merely classifying it as being “like” some other loss.

Some examples. I’m sure there are more, but these three parts came to me during the sleep-deprived night after.

The volume of turnovers and self-inflicted screw-ups in such a short frame. That brought back the pain of the 2014 home game against Georgia Tech. Remember 5 turnovers in just the first quarter? That certainly came to my mind.

Crapping the bed in a big home game at night. In prime time. Lots of past greats in attendance. Celebrating the past and looking forward. I’m sure you can come up with your personal favorite, but I’m going with the 2010 Miami debacle. A 31-3 humiliation on Thursday night with plenty of alumni on hand for what had been planned for a while.

Biggest margin of defeat since the end of Johnny Majors second go-round in 1996? Too many to choose from in that year — Ohio State, Miami, Syracuse, and Notre Dame all had margins of victory of 45 or better.

And of course 48-14 is tossed in for some extra salt in the wound.

Effects of Hurricane Florence are supposed to hit Pittsburgh on Saturday for the 12:30 game with GT. Pitt may not outdraw a midweek Pirates game.

We have a terrible defense and Georgia Tech will run the option at will.
They will never recover from the past week loss, they just don’t have the caliber of players needed to win most games let alone a championship.
Last year for season tickets.
And Poor Heather Lykes gave the guy an extension. This is going to cost Pitt a hell of a lot of cash this time around.

I don’t see this guy getting cut this year no matter what. It simply costs too much. He is clearly over his head and even delusional at times. How he can’t see how weak his OL is and how vanilla his offense is just amazing. Get ready for another subpar season without a bowl game. Just a shame……

Narduzzi will b gone after next year which will b worse than this year the team has gotten worse each year of his tenure. Now that he has run out of chyrst recruits the bottom is falling out.

This weeks game will be sad to watch, they will struggle to produce something and it won’t happen.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.11.18 @ 8:40 am

Even Joey Porters kid thinks so, he just announced he is going to PSU as a 3 star recruit. The kid saw enough on the sidelines to see what a mess the coaching staff is.

And now for more BREAKING NEWS…

Joey Porter (Son of Steelers Coach) announces he is headed to Penn State.

Finally… PROOF PittofDreams and Pitt Dreamer not one in the same.

I think this is my last year for season tickets. It’s just no fun.

I’ve been going to Jets games forever, even at their worst. But the Jets have a parking lot, that my friends and I can have a great time tailgating in with the kids.

Comment by Chris 09.11.18 @ 10:30 am

The defense played fine, especially considering the short field they had to work with all night. Pitt was going to have to score about 30 to win and the defense played well enough to have kept PSU under that in a less bizarre game. Penn State has a good offense. They’re going to score points.

I’ve seen some complaints about the offensive line as well but I also think they played fairly well against a top 10 team. PSU definitely got pressure, but that should be expected with that level of opponent. Pickett, for the most part, was able to navigate it.

Now … coaching, special teams and the offensive game plan are a completely different story. All failed epically on Saturday night and let down Panther Nation.

Duzz can survive this but there really isn’t any margin of error the rest of the season. Pitt can lose but they have to at least be competitive. When a team is not competitive at home, it’s very telling about team culture. It can happen (teams will have bad games) and sometimes things will snowball like they did over the weekend … but, it has to be an outlier on the season. It CANNOT happen again.

Watson was a very uninspired hire from the get go. He has had enough success in his career to give him the benefit of the doubt, or at least some leeway, but he also had some red flags on his resume that are hard to overlook.

In year 2, Pitt cannot roll out an offense that looks as dysfunctional as this one did. It was a very unimaginative game plan. Maybe the rain influenced it, but it’s still no excuse. There was hardly any pre-snap movement outside of some motion by the wide receivers. With a consistent pass rush, Pitt kept having Pickett drop back and have to wait, when he didn’t have time to wait, for his receivers to run their routes and get open. Running against a stacked box????? Play Calling 101 is if there is 8 in the box you pass. 7 in the box you run. Smh.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.11.18 @ 12:51 pm

@Tossing, with a due respect, our defense did not play all that well. Remember the 80 yard run by Samnders in the first half which was called back due to a block in the back. Add that to his 118 yards rushing and he would have 198 yards. PSU already amassed 390 yards total. Not to mention the five dropped passes by their wide open receivers. It could have easily gone over 500 yards. I know could have would have….if Pitt didn’t bobble snaps, punts etc…
We have a long way to go and I don’t think our D has improved much at all over the past few years. That’s shocking with the reputation PN had about defenses.
I agree mostly with your other great analysis…

Comment by ROC2 09.11.18 @ 4:19 pm

ROC2 – It’s college football and Penn State is a top 10 team. Big plays are going to happen. That’s all. I said “fine” not good. The offense was going to have to score for it to be a game.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 09.11.18 @ 7:02 pm

The defense stunk period. No pass rush, pass coverage was poor and we don’t have line backers. There has been no change from last year at all, in fact it may even be worse. This defense will never be able to stop Georgia Tech this week and it will be another sad state of affairs. I know Georgia Tech lost a top running back with injury but if won’s make a damn difference.

The post gazette just entered an article touching on the fact that coach Tim Salem has not been home since the PSU game, he sleeps in his office. That is down right silly and what the hell will it accomplish, someone please tell me.
What use is the guy during practice when he is beat down and tired, no sense. This is what we have folks coaching Pitt football.

Comment by Pitt Dreamer 09.11.18 @ 7:10 pm

I went to the spring game. After watching the punter try and kick the people in my party all agreed that we will have a problem punting the ball. The kid had a hard time handling the ball and took to much time. His kicks went to high with no distance. This is a kid they picked up site unseen because someone contacted one of our brilliant coaches and he “bit on it”. Wait until teams catch on and start to really rush the kid, he will shit his pants.

The Duzzi is not and will not ever be a good head coach. The man was so busy making an ass of himself fighting with the refs that he had no idea his team was given a sideline warning. Two minutes later he goes out onto the field to argue with a ref and got flagged for 15 yards. Then you have the “strength and conditioning coach” doing the same sideline antics running up and down jawing the refs etc. fact I sit close to the bench and the guy is in the coaches ear way to much during the game. Crap like this does nothing but cause confusion on the sideline. All coaches argue with refs but the Duzz lets it carry over way to long into the 2nd or 3rd play. Give the ref your 2 cents put the head set back on and coach your team.

Watching the replay of the FIASCO on ESPNU.

Who said the O-Line played well in the first half?

Comment by PittofDreams 09.11.18 @ 10:14 pm

Agree with most of Tossing analysis. In the first half Pitt ran well enough only because Pickett scrambled and kept the defense honest. By half time our special teams began the at least 20 point turnaround. In the second half the offense was 3 and out 9 straight times, no defense can perform against a top team doing that. The fault lies on Watson. Pitt, except for the interception did not throw one pass further than the first down marker. Think about that. Peds could stack the box and did. Weather is no excuse, it was the same for the Peds. This punter will not perform adequately until maybe he is a RSSR. This lies squarely on Narduzzi. They will not eat two big contracts two of three years. AS to the speculation how much Sanders would have had could it be that he doesnt break the big one without the penalty; I was not that impressed with him.
Chas I left with 8 minutes to go in the fourth. The earliest I ever left even in Majors 2.
INEXCUSABLE COACHING TOP TO BOTTOM.
At least Florence rain is to hold until Sunday.
HAIL TO PITT
