7pm, ESPNU

I’ve had to do some work overnight for the past two nights. As such, sleep has been completely disrupted. I spent 10 minutes staring blankly at my computer before realizing I hadn’t turned it on.

So, I’ll keep this brief and possibly coherent.

Both Pitt and NC State are 1-4 in ACC play.

Pitt is injured, short-handed and light on talent. In the last three games they have gone through long spells of being completely outplayed. Pitt is yet to win an ACC road game. At this point, expectations keep sinking.

NC State is probably third in the ACC in terms of pure, raw talent. But they are poorly coached, sloppy, and piss off everybody. Not just their own fanbase, but anyone who knows anything about basketball. It is maddening to see a team this talented not have any clue how to play as a team. To play so badly  for entire games.

Mark Gottfried is the living embodiment of fantastic recruiter/horrible coach. He has been trying to put on a happy face for all of his team’s struggles. At least until their last loss to Georgia Tech. Then he finally made a big show in his press conference about how upset he was.

So, with the Wolfpack at home. Their coach publicly calling them out. Their talent level. Humiliation suffered in their last couple losses. I fully expect that, like last year, Pitt will get their best effort. Just because of the timing and be beaten fully and thoroughly.

And I’ll likely watch the whole damn thing.

A team with 4 seniors who made the tourney last year & had 4 open scholarships to fill is not a bare cupboard. Where is the improvement? Why has half the roster gotten worse? You can’t blame everything on the former coach. Just remember there will be 8 Stallings players on next years team when you continue to blame Dixon.

Comment by Nick 01.17.17 @ 9:28 pm

Do you really think it was simply by CHANCE that Dixon decided to EXIT at this point?

Seriously?

I give Jamie more credit than that.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 9:29 pm

Truth is… Jamie made out like a BANDIT.

A VERY nice One. But a Bandit none the less.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 9:31 pm

I’ve been watching Pitt basketball since my dad started taking me to games in the early 60’s. There have been far worse teams, but I can’t remember a more frustrating team with less basketball IQ than this one.

Comment by AnotherClancyRebound 01.17.17 @ 9:34 pm

Like I previously posted… he was SMART enough to know when the gettin’ was GOOD. REALLY Good!

Look where he ended up.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 9:34 pm

If I was a recruit I’d never consider pitt just based on pitt fans, bitch and cry about everything

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 9:35 pm

Pitt plays 5 players because that’s all that can play at this level!!!!!!,and 3 of those wouldn’t start for half the country! (Johnson, Jones, Jeter)

Here’s a magic wand pitt fans…..poof!, we have good players, so fuckn stupid!

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 9:40 pm

Well Keith get used to it. I like to bitch when its warranted. I’ve seen enough already to know that Stallings isnt the future. I know enough that Barnes is responsible for this mess and Dixon is also culpable. I know that recruits respect the TRUTH and LOVE it when fans show their passion by being critical because we want Pitt to be GREAT!

Comment by TX Panther 01.17.17 @ 9:41 pm

I wish Stallings would start our bench so all pitt fans would see the caliber of talentless players we have

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 9:43 pm

Maybe if we had John calipera coach this team we’d be awesome, says pitt fans…..probly

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 9:46 pm

I wonder whether Vanderbilt fans are blaming Stallings for having left their cupboard bare in light of their 8-9 (2-3 conference) start. Currently losing to Georgia.

It’s possible Dixon left because he was tired of fans talking crap on him, tired of Barnes meddling, realized that his alma mater was prepared to make a commitment to him and the building of a program that would be entirely his doing (no Howland), and had a bunch of money thrown at him.

Much more effective in deflecting blame from Stallings, though not as nearly as plausible as motivation, to cast Dixon as a drowning rat looking to jump.

Comment by Barvo 01.17.17 @ 9:46 pm

Dixon was a rat that had fleas. It was good for him to jump off the ship when he did. But when the SS Pitt made a port of call and picked up Barnes, the crew caught the plague.

Comment by TX Panther 01.17.17 @ 9:51 pm

Barnes brought his own rat Stallings. Needless to say Pitt basketball is now DEAD.

Comment by TX Panther 01.17.17 @ 9:52 pm

Dixon left because he can’t recruit….because Barnes wanted a tougher schedule and his present team had no PG or center and because his pal Stevie boy was gone.

He may have been getting pressure to win in March too.

Comment by Jackagain 01.17.17 @ 9:54 pm

I’m pretty sure it’s Stallings fault that pitt didn’t score a basket in the last 8 minutes, cuz you know, he takes the shots

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 9:54 pm

Dixon didn’t leave because of this year.

He left because of NEXT year… and knowing how his ability to RECRUIT to the University of Pittsburgh had run its course.

The job at TCU was the CLINCHER. He probably would have left for nothing but he and his Agent were SMART enough to shake down Pitt for a few MILLION on the way out.

Who could blame him?

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 9:57 pm

Keith, stop bitching and crying so much!

Comment by HbgFrank 01.17.17 @ 9:59 pm

Am I the only one that thinks we need to get our underclassmen time on the court against the ACC this year?! This season is as good as over. Let’s get our future on the court some and get some experience. And I’m usually the optimistic guy!

Comment by panther94 01.17.17 @ 9:59 pm

Listen
It was time for Dixon to go, he could not recruit like he use to here at pitt and players weren’t happy

Now does that mean he won’t have success at tcu? Nope! He’ll probably do well for 10+ years, it’s his alma mater! And they want to win and made it a point to want to win

As for pitt, yeah we’re gonna struggle for a bit, did anyone think we’d be fine?!?!

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 10:01 pm

Other than his sister dying, Jamie has lived a pretty charmed life.

Perfect timing on his part, to exit Pitt…but of course Pitt made it easier by reducing the huge buyout.

Both parties wanted OUT imo.

Barnes was brought in to facilitate that.

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:02 pm

Barnes did the deed, but Pitt rubber stamped it.

Exit Stage Left…Herman.

We were scammed.

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:03 pm

No – it’s Stallings fault for not coaching up his players and having a game plan for them to execute when they are ahead in the last 5 minutes of the game.

For having the balls to teach them how to play with a lead in practive and make them stop playing street ball so they don’t choke in a game’s last minutes almost every single time.

For drawing up a play with 3 seconds left to go to have one of the 2 best SENIOR players in the conference take the money shot …no wait let’s let a sophomore with little confidence take the last shot and miss as he has several times already…

Bad Coach. Bad results.

Comment by Tommymac 01.17.17 @ 10:03 pm

Ha!

No one was hAppy with the hire?!of Barnes or stallings, but man, let’s run the guy out of town cuz he has a bench full of stiffs… it doesn’t make sense to me

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 10:04 pm

Sean Miller wouldn’t haven’t lost a game with this team this year, says all pitt fans….probly

Comment by Keith 01.17.17 @ 10:08 pm

I wasn’t sad Dixon left, it was time.

I was sadder when they hire a guy who was running out the clock on his career. A was looking for someone cool to run our program and what we got was a guy who makes the program look circa 1960’s.

Well he’s a much better interview than Dixon and a better talking, most people only see his image on the tube. And we’ve talked about how everything these days is based on perception, wrong or right.
And on perception we look like we’re being coached by a vacuum cleaner salesman.

Just not cool…and bball you gotta at least be cool.

And he was brought to Pitt to do that.

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:08 pm

We’re down to less than a 20% chance of making the tourney now. It’s “Let’s get Bill Stull some minutes” time. And that means playing next year’s players now.

Comment by panther94 01.17.17 @ 10:09 pm

Whoops, that last line belonged in the previous post.

Gotta stop drinking while watching Pitt hoops.

Waittttttt! (you have to now)

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:10 pm

I’d rather run him out of town now than ‘wait and see’ what results he’ll get with his own players. Sometimes you just know. I now ‘know’ that Stallings is OWUWGWNC…Its Fiji for Old Washed Up White Guy With No Clue.

Comment by TX Panther 01.17.17 @ 10:12 pm

The word was nobody wanted to be the Act to Follow …Howland/Dixon(because of their success).

Now after Stallings that should be different.

Only time will tell.

I find it hard to believe you can’t recruit a couple good players per year to play in the best conference in America, at Pitt which is situated in a better spot than Syracuse….who made it to the Final 4 last year.

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:14 pm

Is it Tomlin’s fault AB is immature too? Bad players = bad results. How great a coach was Bill Belichick when he coached the Browns?

Stallings has 5 players right now with no center or PG. But he should be winning every week anyway…..wow.

Comment by Jackagain 01.17.17 @ 10:14 pm

I’ve been a Stallings supporter.

But I have to admit, tonight he looked like he needed both a Haircut and a Shine.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 10:17 pm

This is Stallings class coming in and Jared Wilson-Frame is one of the best JUCO’s out there.

Comment by Jackagain 01.17.17 @ 10:18 pm

Emel… surprised you didn’t beat me to it.

Comment by PittofDreams 01.17.17 @ 10:18 pm

Pitt shouldn’t have made the Tourney last year.

That was a ‘parting’ gift for Dixon.

And that was naturally followed by just about the worst 1st round performance…since…let’s see.

Pitt getting beat by Bradley or was it Pacific.

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:21 pm

lmao PoD

Comment by EMel 01.17.17 @ 10:23 pm

Upitt called this when Bon Ton Stallings was hired.

Upitt said West Coast Mormon Marty wouldnt make it 2 years.

BOT should pay me because I have called it spot on.

New AD fires this neverbeen oreck salesman before 2019.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.17.17 @ 11:03 pm

Barvo +1

Best Hoops Guy we have.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.17.17 @ 11:05 pm

We have two great players who will have a shot at the pros but we cannot win games. What a waste.

Comment by Frank MD 01.17.17 @ 11:14 pm

Most on here have said Jaime left no talent behind. Now some of the same people are saying Stallings sucks. I’m willing to give the guy this season and next before I make that conclusion. On playing bench players, I think that is not happening because I don’t think most of them will be on next years roster. Between new recruits, graduations, and transfers, I think we are going to see a major roster overhaul.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.17.17 @ 11:22 pm

HbgFrank, nice to read one sound mind at the Asylum. Of course we have to give Stallings two more years. Got to give the guy a fair shot.

gc and web (?) were/are the BB gurus. Would like to hear what are their feelings.

More importantly, would love to find out what “really” happened to PITT’S recruiting the last few yrs of Dixon. If I remember correctly after Adams there was none. Certainly no big gets.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 01.17.17 @ 11:45 pm

Stallings doesnt deserve shit. This isnt Socialism. Win or get fired. The guy is a life long loser. What will change now
He is 58. He is going to win all of a sudden. He go
Cheap and rhis is the result.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.17.17 @ 11:48 pm

Stallings had better have a better plan for next years team because the “Let it be” plan going into this year with this roster was totally his fault.

I can and do blame him for not trying to find some Juco players to fill the holes on this team. Those HOLES were there in the off season.

Dixon would have found SOMEBODY that could play a few minutes. Hell any other coach in America would have looked at this team and thought “I need some help” “we have only 4 forwards and a two guard with any playing time” “My Freshmen Point is 5’6″ tall and can’t shoot” “I don’t have anyone who could be considered a center” and went and found a few productive grad transfers.

NOT Kevin! He says “NOPE this looks good.” “Move Artis to PG and problem solved” “Those that doubted me will surely see my genius now!”

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 01.18.17 @ 12:00 am

OH and for those saying Dixon left the cupboard bare….

If there’s nothing in your cupboard do you starve to death???

Do you blame your spouse for your hunger pains?

IF you have a clue you GO TO THE STORE and put something in there to eat.

Kevin didn’t know the cupboard was bare. Kevin liked the cupboard just as he found it so he left it as it was.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 01.18.17 @ 12:06 am

I am amazed that he is only through half of his first season and some of you are so sure that the coach sucks or he is going to quit. I sometimes wonder why some of you don’t apply for the job. Ridiculous

Comment by DocJlk 01.18.17 @ 6:34 am

Pitt extended their lead 69-62 with just under 8 minutes … and the only FG they got the rest of the way was a putback by Jones about 3 minutes later … the only offensive rebound they got down the stretch. Otherwise, it was one and done.

If the team ain’t hitting their shots, their done! No rebounds, no post-ups, no driving to the hoops.

Comment by wbb 01.18.17 @ 6:54 am

Pitt in the first 12 minutes of the second half: 14 of 18 for 35 points.

Pitt in the final 8 minutes of the half: 1 of 11 for 5 points

Comment by wbb 01.18.17 @ 7:01 am

DocJlk – HC Stallings is on a really bad 4 game losing streak that seems to have no end in sight.

With a team that lost one contributor from a team that made the NCAA tournament last year.

Really bad…

Comment by Erie Express 01.18.17 @ 7:19 am

Dixons teams would not have been embarrassed or lost like this. And I’m no big Dixon supporter. Stallings had plenty of ingredients in that cupboard to make a half decent soup. Instead he made a turd.

Comment by TX Panther 01.18.17 @ 7:22 am

Really TX? Last year Dixon lost to NC ST by how much?

Comment by Jackagain 01.18.17 @ 4:11 pm

Last year Pitt was 9-9 ACC regular season – 10-10 counting Tournament.

How’s that looking now?

Comment by Tommymac 01.18.17 @ 7:21 pm

Someone has to figure out how a successful coach like Dixon couldn’t or wouldn’t keep it going as he did during his many good yrs. WHAT HAPPEN!

Was he already looking to leave? Did he get lazy? Was he too easy and or too loyal to the assistant coaches?

When you’re a top 30 team for a decade, it’s not that difficult to recruit. Where did all the talented city kids go?

You don’t go from the success of 11-12 yrs PITT had to shit that quickly.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 01.18.17 @ 9:04 pm

Dixon left recruiting to his assistants since he can’t sell (recruit). Of course since Pitt has the worst AD in college sports, teams poached any assistants who could recruit from us. Calipari alone poached 2 from here.

Pitt, like everyone else in the world gets what they paid for. In this case, crap.

Comment by Jackagain 01.18.17 @ 9:14 pm

@Jackagain Spot on. Wecould not pay to keep the recruiters here.

Also moving to ACC meant that we lost the NYC pipeline – not playing in the Garden every year hurt there.

Jamie was unable to spend the $$ to hire decent recruiters for other areas of the country.

I was sad to see him leave but felt it was his time to go – my issue is the crap hireing job that incompetent boob Barnes pulled.

HCKS has a 17 year record we can ppoint too – we know how this book will end. He is at best an average Head Coach. He is not putting butt in the seats.

An up and comer would have lost too – but they would have also helod out promise for a non mediocre future thus fans would have started coming back.

With this guy the Pete is empty for many years to come regardless. I hope the BOTS chew on that for a bit.

H2P
