Digging a bit into my Kinks library for that one.

Last night Amir Watts a 3- or 4-star DT/DE from Chicago tweeted out that he was done with recruiting.

There was a delay on the Pat Signal.

Good weekend for hosting kids. Pitt closed the deal with Watts, who had lots of late pursuit — including Penn State. Pulling another kid right out of the heart of Big Ten recruiting territory.

Watts has a 3-star rank from ESPN and 247. Rivals and Scout say 4-star.

A bit more than a week to signing day, and there is an unfamiliar level of optimism surrounding Pitt football.

@gc–I think 24/7 averages several other star ratings (e.g. rivals + scout + espn divided by 3– or something similar) to come up with their assignment of stars to a player. I don’t think they are original based on their own scouting work.

If so–unless a guy is a 4-star on multiple systems he won’t be one on 24/7.

I am open to correction on this if I am wrong.

My have to add “Wipe Out” (Ventures?) to that list also.

tomcat, great list

“Hey little girl, I don’t want you around no more.
If you come knocking, you won’t get past my door.
HaHaHaHa”

I would recite the words to Wooly Booly but til this day, I have no clue what they were saying.

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 11:18 am

It seems like this class is pretty much wrapped up, outside of 3 or 4 guys and *hopefully* holding onto a few already committed. Otherwise, I wouldve liked to see narduzzi trying to steal away some michigan commits. Harbaugh has had several players, that have been committed to them for months, decommit saying that michigan has either pulled their offers or just flat out dropped contact for prospects they like better.

I have to imagine pitt is in VERY good shape for Hamlin and Saloman.. in the running for Camp & Wallace even though i suspect *pure speculation* wallace is a backup to saloman. Either way, wallace is a big time recruit and id be thrilled to land him.

If pitt were to finish this class by holding on to the guys they already have and adding Hamlin & Salomon I think it would be the best class (on paper) theyve signed at least since the post 13-9 class. Even if they lose miller to miami, theyve added talent and numbers to every position of need outside of *maybe* offensive line.

However, with the nature of recruiting, these next 8 days will likely have many twits and turns and surprises. Im VERY excited

Comment by Pk 01.26.16 @ 11:24 am

Harbaugh self destructs. I don’t think UM wins a title. They will be better than they have been in a long time but they won’t win it all.

@Reed … Many beers in Haddon Hall ..many with my Physicsl Therapy classmates and professors.. Back in the days when a hoagie cost 1 $1.50 Haddon Hall had one that cost $5.00.. In front of my profs n classmates I asked him ” How big is that Hoagie?” His replay verbatim ” So fuckin big you can’t eat it.” They used a whole loaf if fresh Itslian bread and loaded it with meat .. Biggest sandwich I ever tried to eat.. Great memories

On backup QB.Someone mentioned “77” season where Pitt needed to go to 3 deep, don’t forget “76” when Haygood , the starting veer QB went down and we thought we were lucky we had Matt Cavanaugh to go in till he went down and the scout team QB Tom Yewcic from Johnstown took over with a solid running game to keep the undefeated season intact. These are all cases why you need more than one QB. A good O line and a good running game lessens the exposure of the QB to injury and gives a boost to his replacement if the starter goes down.Great to see the recruits that are coming in so far.

Comment by Pitt60 01.26.16 @ 11:59 am

Harbaugh will blow hoke and RR out of the water. He will win, winning a NC is not an easy task but he will have a shot.

Univ of San Diego…win
Stanford……win big after Walt flopped
49ers…..win I don’t follow the NFL nearly as closely but was he one game from the Super Bowl.

Hard to debate what he has done so far. Is he a prick, is he abrasive…the answer is probably a yes. But he’s a football coach not the pope. A lot of coaches are pricks and they still win.

Comment by Bj 01.26.16 @ 12:01 pm

in ’76, Steelers started out 1 and 4 and Bardshaw got ‘turkey joned’ and was out for several weeks. Unknown rookie ‘Mike Kruzcek’ came in, handed the ball off (2 – 100 yard rushers) and the defense had 3 or 4 shutouts, and they won like 7 or 8 straight.

In 92′, all-pro Phil Simms got hurt and back-up Jeff Hoffstetler started vs high flying Bills and future HOF Jim Kelly. Giants relied on running game and defense, not to mention a missed FG, to beat the bills.

This coming year, we should have a more improved defense to win games playing a conservative offense .. handing the ball off to Conner (hopefully) and Ollie behind veteran OL. But, will need help from offense at Ok St and Clemson .. and maybe a couple others.

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 12:07 pm

Harbaugh is an excellent coach. He just flames out and is his own worst enemy. He’s perfect to get UM back up and running I feel it will ultimately be a Stanford situation where his replacement keeps it going.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.26.16 @ 12:23 pm

Reed. I enjoyed a few too many beers at Haddon Hall too. I think my buddy Bob may have almost lived there.

Comment by rayhpgh 01.26.16 @ 12:25 pm

wbb, you don’t win many college games relying on the defense and handing the ball off IMO to win many games. College offensive football is so wide open and there are always holes in most college D’s to rely on a low score tough D philosophy to win you the game. And based on how poorly Pitt played on defense its last few games; I don’t see us becoming a dominate D next year. Maybe a dominate D in 3 years but not next year.

Comment by jrnpitt 01.26.16 @ 1:29 pm

Let’s not be L-seven, come and learn to dance.”
Wooly bully, wooly bully
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.

Matty told Hatty, “That’s the thing to do.

Comment by Dan 72 01.26.16 @ 1:53 pm

jrnptt, my scenario is if we have to use a back-up QB … however, if you can eat up the clock by running, it makes up for a lot of ills. Just look at what Baylor did to UNC in the bowl game a month ago. Now they did use a spread formation and plenty of speed, but you have to use the resources available to you … and when you have a veteran Oline and real good RBs .. use them.

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 1:54 pm

poor Rutgers. Now PSU just flipped their kicker .. after their own kicker was flipped

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 1:58 pm

Keyshon Camp had stated that he won’t announce until NLI day. I have to wonder if he is waiting to see if Rashan Gary signs with UM. If so, I have to believe he’ll choose Pitt. UM already has 2 DT’s committed in 4* Jordan Elliot and 3* Dwumfour. Too crowded if Gary picks UM. Don’t think Camp will go with Mizz. Unlike Pitt they aren’t on the rise and still a mediocre program. Considering that Camp was offered by Ala UM, OSU and others, that would be a big time win to get him on board. When you can pull someone with that offer sheet in from Florida, you’re doing some good crootin. If they can hold onto the ones they have verbals on and add these last few big ones, man that is one heck of a year. Also consider that only 5 of the 21 commits are from PA and 5 are from OH and 4 from NJ. I think the best part of this year is we’re not looking for guys at the end of the recruiting year to meet a quota, we’re looking for big time players to make a difference. These last few guys are playmakers that we have as good a chance at getting as anyone.

Comment by FoolOfPitt 01.26.16 @ 2:05 pm

FoolofPitt, good thought. It would really be helpful if Watts and Camp bonded last weekend .. but the next 8 days will be anxious.

Our schedule

PITTSBURGH—Pitt will play one of its most challenging schedules in recent memory when it faces a 2016 slate that features eight bowl teams, four that won at least 10 games and three that finished in the nation’s Top 20.

The Panthers’ full regular-season schedule was announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Highlights include:

Seven games at Heinz Field, including the heavily anticipated renewal of Pitt’s series with Penn State on Sept. 10. The historic rivalry has not been played since the 2000 season when the Panthers blanked the Nittany Lions, 12-0.
A visit to Death Valley to face Clemson (Nov. 12), the defending ACC champion and 2015 national runner-up. The Panthers and Tigers have met only once before and never during the regular season.
A Thursday night Coastal Division clash at Heinz Field with Virginia Tech (Oct. 27) that will be nationally showcased on ESPN.
Additional home ACC games with Georgia Tech (Oct. 8), Duke (Nov. 19) and Syracuse (Nov. 26). The Yellow Jackets and Blue Devils have each claimed a Coastal Division title over the past three seasons. With 71 all-time meetings, Syracuse ranks among Pitt’s most traditional opponents.
Coastal road games at North Carolina (Sept. 24), Virginia (Oct. 15) and Miami (Nov. 5). The Tar Heels won the Coastal last year, finishing with an 11-3 mark and No. 15 national ranking.
Tough non-conference dates with a pair of foes that had double-digit win totals last year: Oklahoma State on the road (Sept. 17) and Marshall (Oct. 1) at Heinz Field.
The 2016 season opener against Villanova (Sept. 3), one of the winningest programs on the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level.

Would love if pitt pursued and landed Neal. I cant say Ive seen him play, but he has quality production at the p5 level & would have a chance to start this year. Take all the quality grad transfers you can get, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Comment by Pk 01.26.16 @ 3:09 pm

9/3 Villanova
9/10 PSU
9/17 at Oklahoma St
9/24 at UNC
10/1 Marshall
10/8 Georgia Tech
10/15 at Virginia
10/27 Va Tech (Thur)
11/5 Miami
11/12 at Clemson
11/19 Duke
11/26 Syracuse

Most interesting that we close with Cuse and not Miami

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 3:17 pm

the above should be — 11/5 at Miami

Comment by wbb 01.26.16 @ 3:18 pm

Also no Friday night games. Looks like all Saturdays, with the Va Tech game on Thursday spread perfectly between the UVA and Miami games.

Tossing. 10-2?

If pitt wins 8 regular season games with *this* schedule this year, itll be their best season in at least the last decade.

At clemson, At unc, At miami. With home games vs psu, marshall, vt. Thats only half their schedule & i could see them losing 4 or 5 of those.

Comment by Pk 01.26.16 @ 3:22 pm

& AT oklahoma state, obviously.

Comment by Pk 01.26.16 @ 3:22 pm

Ill be happy with 7-5. pitt won 8 this year with mediocre at best talent against an easier schedule. While i like the 2016 class and parts of last years class a lot, i cant see there being a huge influx of talent on the field until 2017/2018.

Comment by Pk 01.26.16 @ 3:27 pm

pk, I agree with you, Neal was the second leading tackler on the Illinois team and started the past 2 years. And at 6′ 1′ 235 lbs. it would appear he has the size to make an impact. Experience, decent size and one would hope he could outrun most of our inside LB’s that started this year. Wanting to play closer to home could make Pitt or PSU(not on the Illinois schedule) his desired destinations.

Comment by jrnpitt 01.26.16 @ 3:28 pm

8-4 at very best, what a schedule. Better team but less wins. That schedule can compare with anyone’s. Very few power 5 schools would play that OOC!

pmdH2P – Once Price applied for the extra year it was a given he’d get it due to the extent of his injuries. Good for him and for us.
