QB Thomas MacVittie has committed to Pitt per Jerry DiPaola and others. MacVittie is a 6’4″ dual threat QB who’s set to be a first time starter this upcoming season. This would normally be a negative, but he’s coming from Ohio powerhouse Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) and his physical skills are elite. 6’4 QBs with strong arms and 4.5 speed aren’t common. MacVittie will likely blow up this season, so hopefully this is a commitment that will stick.

The concern regarding MacVittie’s lack of experience isn’t unfounded. However, Pitt is not going to attract proven QBs with elite talent right now. That leaves the coaches the option of taking less talented players or taking talented players who for some reason haven’t had the opportunity to shine. With Voytik here for two more years along with Adam Bertke and Ben DiNucci, the coaches have options if MacVittie doesn’t pan out. Also at 6’4″ with 4.5 speed, another position is certainly an option. But, if MacVittie puts those physical tools to use, Pitt could have a steal.

Until we start to see some of this staffs recruits on the field at Pitt, we won’t know how good they are at judging talent. At a school like Pitt is very important that they are. Pitt will always have their share of 2 and 3 star recruits, finding ones that were underrated or diamonds in the rough is huge.

I really like that next years class has started with a WPIAL kid and 2 from Ohio. Recruiting Ohio and western Pa well is essential.

Not saying that MacVittie can’t be a great college QB and was just waiting his turn to start..But, the kid he backed up Matt Crable, will be playing his college ball at Grand Valley State. He didn’t sit behind a big time college prospect, will be very interested to see what kind of year MacVittie has this upcoming season…

Great line from HCPN after yesterday’s practice –

On defensive end Rori Blair being an every down player:

“He can play first and second down, no doubt about it. He has to continue to get better. I ate dinner with him last night down in the café and he has to eat better. We’re trying to control and get in everything. He goes slowly, `Coach I can’t eat anymore.’ I said I could eat all that plus my plate. Why can I eat it and you can’t? So we have to teach them how to eat, too. He has to get bigger, but he could be a very good football player for us. He just has to learn that motor all the time.”

Coach evaluated Rori’s dinner – now that is getting down in the weeds and learning who your team is. Teaching guys how to eat – so they can be better fit and defeat the opponent.

HTP!

Dinner — Quaker State or anyone of the dozen area pizza places
11 pm — the O for large fries

OPG – As far as Chryst’s recruiting goes last season we had the best offense we have had in years, tied with one of DW’s teams, with just about all the starters being Chryst’s players. This season, save QB again, we’ll have almost every player in a very good two-deep OL, one good TEs, three of the top four RBs (Ibrahim excluded) with two awesome FR and rsFR runners in James and Ollison, along both WRs being Chryst’s recruits.

Out of those players we have two genuine superstars in James Conner and Tyler Boyd… and as stated almost all of our two deep on offense but a few will again be kids he recruited. Our next possible star that everyone is so high on, Whitehead, is a Chryst recruit also. So yeses, across the board he didn’t get the number of recruiting star and points that other teams do, but I’ll argue that his offensive recruiting is on par with anyone in the ACC and maybe in the country.

As with any recruiting the real proof on how good classes are is 2-3 years in and this season we’ll see exactly how good his classes have been, especially on defense where for once his players will have a HC and DC who knows what they are doing to coach them – don’t be surprised if we revise our opinion of his defensive recruiting big time after this season.

I really can’t figure out your ‘maturity’ comment in terms of Paul Chryst. If anything that was his strong point. You really do have to understand what a complete mess the 360 degrees of the football program (not just on the field but off it also) was in before Chryst was hired. We were on the verge of being the national laughing stock if not already there with the previous years.

Chryst was mature enough and enough of a leader in the real sense of the word to recruit strong character players and instill discipline with them and the upperclassmen. He almost totally rebuilt the roster and, through the attrition of 38 players – almost all DW and TG recruits – he filled the roster with kids who weren’t the type to get into trouble.

That was a huge undertaking and turned out extremely well and as far as I can tell we had only one serious disciplinary/legal problem with one of his recruits and that was with a FR who never put on a PITT uniform in Tra’von Chapman.

I know you feel Shell should have been allowed back on the team but that was an instance where it wasn’t only that one player affected. Shell’s crap attitude and clear insubordination, and not just toward the staff either, alienated almost all the players with his locker room bullshit. Chryst called in the Team Captains before he made his final decision not to entertain Shell’s last minute request to join the team and they were all against Shell returning. OPG – dismissing Shell was probably the best thing for the PITT team AND for Shell in the long run. Shell had burnt his bridges at PITT completely by the time he quit the team… and let’s not forget that is exactly what Shell did. He quit the team.

I know it was in jest…. but those guys are eatin much better than that.

Same cafe as the Steelers. Between the 5:00 am workouts, lifting and film in the evenings.. I bet most are getting 3 healthy meals a day, plus the shakes and supplements, from practice facility.

And if these guys are on the field at 5:00 or 5:30 am.. I’d bet you zero of them are hangin out at the O eating fries late night.

That’s one of the side effects of scheduling practice when it’s still dark out.

Comment by BostonsCommon 03.27.15 @ 8:22 am

Not to rain on OPG’s parade, but other than the hype, I see no huge upgrade in recruiting so far. Tired of the Chryst hate. He brought us Boyd, Conner, and a strong o-line. He also got Whitehead to commit. PN closed on a couple good defenders that Chryst was recruiting, but So far, He hasn’t hit any home runs. I am positive, but am withholding the irrational exuberance and giving Chryst the recognition he deserves.

He deserves criticism for House, defensive recruiting weakness, and lack of communication skills, but to say he was a total failure is just plain wrong when you have a record setting running back and wide receiver.

gc & Reed, It’s the energy level right from the get go. Narduzzi is a mover and shaker.

Chryst to me came off as a sloth. Plus his handling of the exising team players The large number of players that left the team. Poor game day decisions.

Recruiting? Do you really want to go there? He turned off more potenial Pitt players than he brought in. Yes, Boyd and Commer are local stars. Even a blind squirrel fines an acorn. Don’t you guys feel the Pitt name is still able to bring in at least couple of recruits alone?

I know alot of us on this blog believe we have to settle for the 2- 3 star player for a while. Chryst had alot to do with that attitude.

For the +$1mm salary we should have done alot better for a coach.

Let’s stop discussing Chryst. I need to watch my blood pressure.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.27.15 @ 12:04 pm

I forgot to mention the great defensive team Chryst recruited. Looked good against Houston didn’t we?

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 03.27.15 @ 12:12 pm

OPG – those players were either forced to leave or not invited by on scholarship, it wasn’t their 100% their choice to leave by any means.

WBB – there is something hinky about the Joe D./Dokish thing on Panthers Prey. It almost looks like Dokish is baiting him and publishing Joe D.’s rants on purpose for some reason.

Comment by Reed 03.27.15 @ 4:11 pm

Maybe Dokish is in fact, Joe D.??

He may be fighting himself in some sort of
intergalctic battle for the survial of the
Panther Prey?

I’ve seen Dokish dismiss peoples comments with
sophomoric rants before, or not even publish them if he doesn’t like them.

Comment by Dan 03.27.15 @ 4:37 pm

OPG, I already conceded the woeful defensive recruiting, but to say Conner and Boyd was just Chryst getting lucky is silly. There is also an offensive line that is probably the best since the Mark May, Russ Grimm, Bill Fralic days that contributed to Conner and Boyd’s success. I think we are much better off with PN, but your hatred of Chryst is a little over the top.

Comment by gc 03.27.15 @ 6:32 pm

I like this qb pickup and hope he makes the 4.5 hour trip often over the coming months. The Cincinnati area is strong this year for D1 talent. Hopefully he can bring in one or two weapons. I think they have a 4 or 5 star TE that recently committed to OSU. He is a legacy recruit so probably no chance for a flip.

I expect this qb to perhaps garner 4 star consideration. I do not expect that he would go to OSU as they are stockpiled at that position for years to come. These kids need to see the field to showcase their skills. They also want access to national championships. The ACC provides that as easily as the big14.

Kentucky may make a push for this qb.
