Open Thread: Friday Fun, Pitt-BC

Your basic info.

7p, ESPN

Announcers: Dave Flemming and Danny Kanell. (Boy, I’m going to miss the Friday freakery of the Tessitore effect.)

A lot of pixels used this week — thanks Reed and Justin — on recapping Delaware and looking to this game.

Cautious optimism, tempered by past disappointments. A breeding ground for my specialty, dark cynicism.

Here are the twitter feeds for myself and Justin if you want to follow that way.

I want the win. I want to see some insanely unbridled optimism that would come with it.

Winslow’s punting is a major improvement for this year’s team.

Dr. Tom – good observation on House.

Comment by Joe Lawrence 09.05.14 @ 9:19 pm

See if Conner was playing dee he would have stopped that run. James does all.

Comment by pd 09.05.14 @ 9:20 pm

Grigby’s got work to do shadowing a quarterback…

Comment by DD 09.05.14 @ 9:23 pm

Somebody said Pitt by 10

Comment by pd 09.05.14 @ 9:24 pm

The white on white unis look OK when you win.

Comment by Joe Lawrence 09.05.14 @ 9:24 pm

Is anybody thinking “same old Pitt” after this gutty performance on both sides of the ball in an early season away win for the Panthers?

Pitt is on it’s way! Enjoy this victory for an extra day since this game was on Friday. Come Monday though, time to focus on FIU.

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.05.14 @ 9:27 pm

Good thing they didn’t make the 2 pts — I’d be a nervous wreck

Only real bad game i saw tonight was by Pitts…too slow, out of position, now the interference….but overall we dominated more than the score shows!

Comment by DD 09.05.14 @ 9:30 pm

Durham leads PITT with stupid personal foul penalties throughout 2 games.

Comment by Todd Gack 09.05.14 @ 9:30 pm

TERRISH!! EFF THAT QB

Another F bomb on national TV! You gotta love that

the offensive line is awesome. hopefully our guys arent hurt too bad.

Comment by goalie44 09.05.14 @ 9:36 pm

I was ready for a let down but the gold and blue came through. I hope this is for real this year, I’ve spent 34 years as a PITT fan with so much heart ache. H2P

Comment by sam knocken 09.05.14 @ 9:37 pm

If you have Fox Sports Ome the game is on at noon

Comment by Frank MD 09.05.14 @ 9:41 pm

That worked out pretty nice. Enjoy the weekend & get ready for next week.

Comment by Nick 09.05.14 @ 9:45 pm

Very important win for the program. Still lots to work on. Boston College not very impressive. QB ran well but poor passer, worse receivers.

Still, Pitt looks as good as we hoped.

Thought Jones and Ibrahim deserved a play or two. Conners won’t make it through the season if he has to do this every week.

Voytik came through after a shaky start. The last drive before the end of the half was a thing of beauty, very unexpected, and it took the wind out of their sails.

Lots of game balls deserved, a true team effort.

Hope Clemmings is OK.

Should be a good crowd for Iowa.

Need to steamroll FIU first.

Comment by gc 09.05.14 @ 9:47 pm

…they can wear those ugly white pants if they want to as well!

Comment by Leaseman 09.05.14 @ 9:47 pm

With FIU next week I am looking fwd to the Iowa game on the 20th as my annual sojourn to the north side. With Iowa’s first game and now this game I now hope to see my second Pitt win over Iowa on the 20th.I was getting anxious at the beginning of this game like a lot of others.H2P

Comment by Pitt 60 09.05.14 @ 10:02 pm

Line has crept up to 6 on ESPN.
Pitt by 10 so I don’t have to sweat other than at my 12yo’s football game tonight. Go Warhawks!!!

Let’s go PITT!!!

Comment by TVax 09.05.14 @ 2:47 pm

…but the Warhawks got whipped – son lead rusher but only about 25 yards. Oh, well.

H2P

Comment by TVax 09.05.14 @ 10:07 pm

Guys FIU is Atrocious. I will take Pitt -25. That is how bad they are. SFLA humidity is only issue. This isnt the FIU under Cristobal by the way. Im in town all week who is coming?????

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.05.14 @ 10:09 pm

Myself and others here have said how important this game was. Mission accomplished. Still some concerns, but this is the youngest team in FBS with a 1st year starting QB, there are going to be growing pains.

Still not a talented enough team for injuries to start mounting. Gabe Roberts battled Rowell until the end of camp in 2013, so I am confident he will be fine. Still haven’t heard how bad Rowell was hurt, I know he was on crutches. Clemmings out for any time would be a tougher blow.

Beat FIU and gc i hope you’re right. 3-0 against a Big 10 team you don’t get to see much and I would hope we get a nice turnout.

I will watch this game on DVR again sober, but I’m thrilled and really feeling good about this team and more importantly the program…

Hail to Pitt!!!!

Comment by Pap76 09.05.14 @ 10:11 pm

One more of those dumb penalties on Durham and I will have to start calling him “Fredo”…What is most encouraging is that we are beginning to see HCPC vision for this team become real. Can’t wait to see if the team continues to improve this season. The future looks good. I prefer the smash mouth offense to the “run a play every 15 seconds” type….Let’s give some credit to coach House. The D is coming along as well. When you play an aggressive D, you are going to give up a few big plays.

Comment by HbgFrank 09.05.14 @ 10:13 pm

@Upittbaseball:

FIU is bad. Even though they had a bad year, I think the only reason they canned Cristobal was they got sick of every year him being mentioned for jobs and seemed to like putting himself out there. Think they should have kept him around but sooooooooo glad Pitt went with Chryst…

Comment by Pap76 09.05.14 @ 10:17 pm

@HbgFrank:

I personally think the D has been the most pleasant surprise. Weknew we had stars in the making with Boyd and Conner. The O line has been recruited well, so I think we all thought they would be better. Voytik is about where I thought he would be, I had hoped for a little better, but he’s done what he’s needed to. I think the D has been tremendous. I think the special tteams has been solid too. So good work so far from Matt House and Chris Haering…

Comment by Pap76 09.05.14 @ 10:22 pm

Great win. Good for the Oline. Voytik improved second half.
Good job by Matt House.
Voytik is still learning. Give him some time. Love the mobility.

Nice ACC road win over a legit league opponent by a very young team! Hail to Pitt! Wonder how long it will take for BC’s defensive front to recover from that pummeling? Rori Blair just being able to play football, let alone making plays for our Panthers, is just an amazing story! Congratulations men! UPone

Comment by UPone 09.05.14 @ 10:32 pm

Impressive win. Impressive on national tv.

Score wasn’t as close, and anyone that watched it knows this.

Win on the road in conference!!

Voytik going up and over players to get the first down!!

Football player!

Conner, beast
Boyd, beast

Lines both excellent.
Middle of D, excellent.

Corners, ehh, Lafayette, ehh

Would like to see more fake handoff, Voytik around the end on some 3rd and 3’s and 3rd and 4’s.

Ahhhh, picayune at this point, I’m sure we’ll discuss it during the week.

Hail to Pitt. Big win on the road, national tv!

Comment by Dan 09.05.14 @ 10:34 pm

Thought the miss of the game was “the help” on the sidelines or in the box early.

Minor now, but could have been big at the time.

Refs reviewed the call to see if it was a catch.

Someone should have re-reviewed it, the receiver was clearly down, and the ball was at the 40 yard line.

About 3/4 of a yard less than the mark BC got.

Would have made it 4th and well over a yard to go, instead of 1/2 a yard.

Moot at this point, but ticked while I watched.

Comment by Dan 09.05.14 @ 10:40 pm

If someone watches on dvr, double check me, maybe I’m wrong.

Comment by Dan 09.05.14 @ 10:40 pm

Did anyone notice that their kicker “wanted” the ball and our closest guy was backing away from it?

Good teams don’t let that happen. Another learning experience. Whitehead would beat out Pitts right now and would be an upgrade. He had a poor game although on the touchdown pass he seemed to indicate he thought there was help over the top. The film will show what happened. Rori Blair did awesome as did the offensive line.

Durham contained the qb a couple of times and took another stupid penalty because he couldn’t contain himself. Overall, a good game but it felt like we should have won by a few more. The James non fumble and the third down bc reception that was ruled out of bounds on replay were very big for this team. Pitt needs another option when the defense loads the box. A couple of questionable holding calls on Pitt tonight, particularly Holtz but interestingly Mannessah. No Rachid this game. Did Soto do anything? 91 sure did! Real solid game guys! 2-0!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 09.05.14 @ 10:40 pm

Math says Pitt is playing at about #25 ranked team level now with potential to play at closer to a #15 team level.

Comment by pitt1972 09.05.14 @ 11:27 pm

This stat says a lot,SACKS, Pitt-3 ;BC-0. Aaron Donald tweeting in during the game was a nice touch too.

I’m wondering if the ACC feels heavy to AD, since with their ad, run about 5 times during the game, obviously demonstrates that they’re riding on the back of his accomplishments as their own. I had no idea Pitt and AD were such cornerstones in the ACC during our very first season of competition in the conference.

Just goes to show that everyone loves a winner. Just win baby, win! Want to see Heinz Field sold out for the VT game? Have Pitt go into that contest undefeated at 6-0. There will be about 20,000 new faces there then with their newly purchased Pitt gear on boasting how they’ve been following Pitt faithfully since the Marino era. Yeah right! Who cares though, there’s plenty of room on the Pitt band wagon, hop on newbies, looks like it’s going to be a fun ride this year!

H2P!

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.06.14 @ 8:13 am

That’s right Dr. Tom!!

Any newbies, come on down and enjoy!!!

You’re welcome on the wagon anytime!!!

Comment by Dan 09.06.14 @ 9:09 am

Nice win! Any early news on the injuries? PITT will need to be able to run more than 6 basic plays to succeed this season. Garner,TE & running backs need to be involved in passing game. CV IMHO showed poise and improvement after the first quarter and definitely has a bright future. CV,s first start against D1 opponent. The second TD pass was encouraging as CV looked to second option and threw the ball with purpose and a little extra mustard. Great effort on both sides of the ball!!! H2P

Comment by DC33 09.06.14 @ 9:09 am

Thought OL played well (doesn’t take a genius to make that statement) Roberts played well at center and coaches apparently had confidence as they continued to run Connor up the middle. Was it really necessary to have Connor in the game the last 3-4 minutes? Bennett is a veteran rb and freshman (did fumble once) ran hard and had important first down run. Just a curiosity/not being negative! 2-0 is great! The positive vibe is great! H2P!!!

Comment by DC33 09.06.14 @ 9:34 am

Vinopol on hands team was very bad. The kicker wanted the ball Vinopol didnt. Need to work on that in practice.
