OK -Here we go!  Seven hours to game time.

You working guys have already started on the liquid lunches to prep yourselves for watching the game on ESPN.  Us unemployed guys just woke up and are starting to get nervous as always before a PITT game.  No one, if they are honest with themselves, can say that they know what this 2014 PITT team is all about and capable of.  Of course, that why they play the games.

So – what do we PITT fans think is going to happen tonight.  How about we take a shot at predicting the final score and how we score our first touchdown.  I’ll go first because no one else can since I’m the one writing this.

PITT – 28  BC – 24; Voytik to Orndoff passing TD.

What say you?

Pitt 7, BC 0, Tyler Boyd returns the opening KO for a TD…man I am glad that he is returning kicks!

Comment by HbgFrank 09.05.14 @ 11:20 am

and the reason tha Pitt doesn’t win 17-0 is that on BC’s 1st punt, Boyd was undercut as soon as he caught the ball

Comment by wbb 09.05.14 @ 11:26 am

hbgFrank – kidding aside do you really think it will be another shutout?

Comment by Reed 09.05.14 @ 11:28 am

I’ve been pushing James Conner as a RUNNING BACK since before he signed with PITT.

No reason to back down now.

ADDAZIO is going to be keying his Defense to STOP CONNER and put pressure on Voytik to carry the game.

That said, still believing Conner has what it takes to make an impact tonight. Not 153 in a half, but maybe across FOUR Quarters.

A SAFER BET is that the name BOYD will be heard early and often.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.05.14 @ 11:32 am

Pitt 35-14, Conner 16 yard rush.

Comment by Patric 09.05.14 @ 11:33 am

Pitt 31-17

Conner, 1 yd run.

Comment by Dan 09.05.14 @ 11:38 am

Defensively… the name GRIGSBY seems to ring a bell.

Looking for #3(Not James #3)to come POURING IN from every angle in pursuit of BC’s Running Quarterback.

The name BLAIR would also seem to fit the task at hand. Expect #92 to have learned enough in first outing against Delaware to put his TALENT into play.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.05.14 @ 11:41 am

Boyd 5 rec 83 yds, 67 return yards
Voytik 14-22 138 yards 1 TD, 1 Int
Conner 68 yards rushing, 1/2 sack, 2 hurries

Comment by wbb 09.05.14 @ 11:45 am

Are Patric and Dan one in the same? HaHa

Wish you were “both” right with your scores.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.05.14 @ 11:46 am

Pitt will be able to move the ball on the ground setting up a lot of 3rd and short situations. I think the key to this game is whether or not he defense is disciplined and fast enough to control a running QB. (Flashback to Pitt v Duke last year) Pitt wins a nail-biter 34 to 30.

Comment by MidWestPanther 09.05.14 @ 11:46 am

Anybody else heading to the game tonight? I’ve lived in Boston for a few years, but I’ve never been to a football game at BC. How is the tailgating there?

Comment by gdf 09.05.14 @ 11:47 am

New Pitt. New Era. Our defense turns out to be better than we think. Tyler Boyd a difference maker on Offense and Voytik’s legs help us keep the chains moving. Pitt 31 – 14.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 09.05.14 @ 11:47 am

Reed, no shutout. I think more like Pitt 23; BC 17. First score is on the first drive after a series of scripted plays ends with Conner punching it in from the 1.

Comment by HbgFrank 09.05.14 @ 11:48 am

Pitt WINS… but it’s going to be close.

NOT that I feel so strongly that Pitt is SO SUPERIOR here.

Just got a feeling that Pitt will be 3 and 0 going into Iowa.

Then things start to get REALLY TESTY.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.05.14 @ 11:49 am

However, if the guy named “FLUTIE” is called from the bench to enter the game… then all bets are off!

Comment by PittofDreams 09.05.14 @ 11:51 am

Pitt wins 31 – 13. First score is a QB keeper by Voytik.

Comment by pmdH2P 09.05.14 @ 11:56 am

Pitt 24-14. The hit brothers Grigsby and Bradley have a break out game.

Comment by pd 09.05.14 @ 12:04 pm

We will go down 14-0 and Trey will come in and lead us to victory. Low Scoring game. Pitt 28-27 on a last second TD scramble by Anderson.

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.05.14 @ 12:07 pm

Then all next week we will have a major QB question on our hands. I think Boyd will not be a major factor tonight b/c of his injury.

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.05.14 @ 12:09 pm

upbb, what did you think of UTSA last night? Looked pretty impressive to me, all things considered.

Comment by wbb 09.05.14 @ 12:14 pm

Pitt WINS 33-10. Conner rushes FOR 210 and IS on THE bench by the END of the 3rd quarter. Chad throws 2 TDs, ONE to Boyd and one TO Jones.

Comment by pghFred 09.05.14 @ 12:34 pm

For the last two days I have been trig to shake off my old PITT visions of us giving up the opening kickoff for a touchdown and getting our heads handed to us on National TV. You’ve all had similar visions in your heads, admit it or not. Today is different, I’m shaking that off and saying “this year is different” and see us really establishing the run starting in the 2nd quarter. Defense will be good, not great. But good enough for the win.

Pitt 27-23

Comment by htp123 09.05.14 @ 12:40 pm

Reed, unemployment is the worst. I graduated in April with my first Bachelor’s in Geology and have yet to even get a call for an interview. My sincerest sympathy, and best wishes.. As for the game, I like Pitt in this one: 47-23. I will go with Ronald Jones catching a crossing pattern and taking it to the house from 22 yards out for the Panthers first score. Enjoy the game everyone!

Comment by PittFan28 09.05.14 @ 12:45 pm

Wbb – Larry Coker and lots of passed over recruits that can play. Yes UTSA looks good and has potential for a program not well known.

Comment by Upittbaseball 09.05.14 @ 12:45 pm

I guess I’m the L word (no, not that L word) because i have been waffling all week. There are time when I think the home team has the definite edge and other times when I think Pitt has the edge in talent and will pull it out. (heck I’ve even changed my mind from when I began this posting.)

I agree with Reed that first TD will be pass to TE … but to Holtz

Pitt 20-16

Comment by wbb 09.05.14 @ 1:06 pm

Don’t over think this one. These two coaches play a certain way, and they don’t care what anyone thinks or says about it. Thank goodness Boyd will be back returning punts, for I fear the rest of the game will not be that exciting.

Pitt wins the turnover battle. Takeaways lead to an advantage in time of possession and field position, which results in a win. I think their QB turns it over multiple times (at least a fumble and an INT), and Voytik doesn’t. BC keeps it interesting, but Pitt never trails.

27-20

Comment by BostonsCommon 09.05.14 @ 1:19 pm

PittFan28 – I shouldn’t have made that joke about being unemployed as I’m actually retired.

wbb – until our OL has really established itself I’m not sure we’ll see Holtz out into patterns. Would be nice though because I love to see him run with the ball.

UPitt – model of consistency.

Comment by Reed 09.05.14 @ 1:24 pm

Defensive struggle.

Comment by pitt1972 09.05.14 @ 1:26 pm

Man, it all comes down to Voytik, and how good BC’s D is…not sure on the first, no clue on the second. If Voytik can keep his composure and look for Garner or the TEs over the middle, we can move the chains and maybe put up a 21-10 win. If he loses his sh#t under pressure and tosses a few grenades, we may be in for a very long night. Staying positive, I’ll go for the former.

Comment by Matt N. 09.05.14 @ 1:39 pm

@wbb

So, what “L” word are you? Lovely?

H2P

Comment by pmdH2P 09.05.14 @ 1:45 pm

27-20 Pitt.

1st TD will be Voytik to Gardner on a route similar to that which Gardner scored our first TD as members of the ACC.

Comment by JAM05PITT 09.05.14 @ 1:47 pm

@PittFan28–Congrats on your Pitt Geology degree. I have a Pitt B.S. and M.S. in Geology. If you want work as a geologist, I recommend going to grad school for at least an M.S.–assuming you have the grades to do so. It will make you more marketable.

Don’t limit yourself to the oil and gas business either. There should be jobs in Environmental and Engineering Geology but that’s where the M.S. specialization becomes important. Get an M.S. focused in that area if you are able.

There’s a good online grad program from Missouri (Rolla. And if you don’t have the grades for the M.S., they have a certificate option that allows you to continue for the M.S. if you do well in the certificate program classes –Link follows–

Fillaponi picks BC to win, guess that means we are in good shape. Cook and Poni, what a couple of jerks. Cook said Pitt vs Delaware wasn’t worth watching. I beg to differ, most watchable Pitt game in many years.

Always nervous for our team.

I like the Tight End in the flat with 7 or eight in the box. Holtz, Ordorf or Parrish. That will keep them off balance. Big YAC.

Comment by gc 09.05.14 @ 1:50 pm

I’ve already said Pitt wins this one by 14.

Coach Chryst WILL establish the run initially on the very first Panther possession, the outcome will be a TD on that initial possession. It may not come by way of a rushing play, however.

I’m seeing Chryst playing a little trickeration in this one. I don’t know if it will happen on Pitt’s first possession, but at some point in the game when BC has soldout in stopping the run by loading the box with 8 or 9, which could happen right from the start, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, on a first or second down play, Voytik drops straight back in play action and hits Boyd on a deep fly pattern for a quick score.

The other trick play I’m hoping to see is a double reverse, preferably after a couple successful Boyd jet sweeps to prime up this play, Boyd’s the reverse decoy while Jones is the double reverse guy in motion, “He,, Could,, Go,, All,, The,, Way!!

The Pitt defense plays way better than anyone predicts, they hold BC to 13.

Final score 27-13, Pitt Wins!

Pitt 31 BC 10. Blair comes off the edge to strip sack the qb, Bradley picks it up & runs it in for the TD.

Comment by Nick 09.05.14 @ 1:58 pm

Come on Reed, just last week Upittbaseball posted something positive right out of left field.

Unfortunately, the power of the dark side is enormous and is slowly dragging Upitt back into the blackhole of it’s clutches. His only hope is for a Pitt win to occur, without any major Pitt injuries or “pitt”falls occurring for the Panthers.

Panthers, win this one for Upitt, you’re his only hope!

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.05.14 @ 2:03 pm

Pitt may not get a lot of love in Pgh, but they do on Fan radio. The Bucs are playing a day game in Chicago & the broadcast is on AM radio because it will interfere with the Pitt pre game. Last Saturday the Pirate game was started on AM & only moved to the Fan after a full 3 hour Pitt post game wrap up. Take that Nutting!

The comments at the end of this Cardiac Hill article parallel my thoughts about our young teams positive mindset, our secret weapon this year.

I think this game will remind us of Pitt’s last 2 visits to Syracuse in style and pace. If this were a home game I’d be much more confident, but I think this one could go either way. Hopeful that our defense is getting faster as a team and is better than advertised. 21-16 Pitt, just covering.

Line has crept up to 6 on ESPN.

final score: PITT 34 BC 17

Comment by Emel 09.05.14 @ 4:55 pm

My bad….some betting sites have PITT as 5 1/2 points now. Late money going on the Panthers since yesterday.

I personally think this line is out of whack, we’ll see tonite.

Comment by Emel 09.05.14 @ 4:58 pm

@ Jack

That’s weird on the ACC site. Don’t tell me they’re going to start screwing around with us.

Comment by Emel 09.05.14 @ 5:09 pm

UPITT – that is a generous as hell offer. You really are one of the good guys.

P/S: I am with you on having intangibles above and before any actual background in the job. You can always train and educate – much harder to change someone’s attitude and personality.

Comment by Reed 09.05.14 @ 5:09 pm

Actually when you click on the other schools on the ACC website. They have it screwed up on the schedules for every school. With wins appearing as losses and no opponents listed for home games.

They’re either pretty incompetent or someone got in there and hacked it.

Comment by Emel 09.05.14 @ 5:14 pm

31-17 Pitt, with 3 passing TDs as BC sells out to stop the run….
