Open Thread: LMU-Pitt

Okay, Loyola Marymount isn’t a bad team. They aren’t great, but they aren’t bottom feeders. They have a dynamo-type point guard, in Anthony Ireland, to give Pitt some problems. They are getting some good help inside from their freshman forward, Gabe Levin.

As Coach Jamie Dixon notes, they press a bit and go up-tempo. But they will definitely struggle to get Pitt to push the tempo beyond any comfort zone.

I’m going to have to watch it later tonight. The kids’ school is doing one of those fundraisers where they will do a mass babysitting of kids for the evening on the cheap. You just don’t pass up those opportunities to get a night out with your spouse. Doubly so, when you don’t have to spend a ton on babysitting costs.

The game starts at 7:00 on

Ho’s Ready?

So Gabe Levin’s playing tonight, and for what school?

Oy Vey!

Should have my head examined for dealing with weather and roads to see this one buy I’m leaving work early to run home change and go. Somebody has to go. Hope the kids come out and execute and put it away early. Looking for Talib and Lamar to take control again like Tuesday night. HTP

I’ve got a chant for the Zoo tonight:

Comment by steve1 12.06.13 @ 5:06 pm

We should see a fairly easy Pitt W tonight … Ireland seems to be the man and does a little of everything but other than Levin’s 9 boards, seems like the rest of the guys are marginal.

The Pete is empty. Fewest people I have EVER seen for an event here, including women’s games.

One of the biggest cheers at the Pete tonite was after Randall, while going for a rebound, was knocked to the floor (although it was not called).
He kipped-up his 6’9″ 240# body onto his feet..

Comment by xfmrman 12.06.13 @ 10:46 pm

Love this team any way you look at ‘em! Especially their coach. Watch out for things that may surprise you…deep run in the tourney…4 wheel drive

Comment by Gordo 12.07.13 @ 12:52 am

The Zoo did lack energy last night, I wouldn’t be surprised if this weeks coming finals weren’t a factor. Some of the worst students make the most noise. It is exciting to see Jamie let them run. LM can score and they didn’t quit but this game was never in doubt. We didn’t shoot our fouls well and had a few defensive lapses but otherwise it was a pretty solid effort against a half decent team. Artis looks good and our offense continues to find open shots. Last year we had so many possesions that ended with forced shots. This year we come up, pass it around and find an open shot. We add a little rebounding, and play D and with improved foul shooting it should be areal good team.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 9:43 am

Cincinnati plays New Mexico in the Pit @ 4 today. The Bearcats are 7-0 and have only played one competitive game. They beat NC St. in tightly contested game at home. Todays game should say a lot about our chances when we play them in MSG in a couple weeks.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 10:17 am

I like that we seem to have discovered the 10′ jump shot. My thinking is that this should help us shoot a better percentage and draw more fouls.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 10:45 am

@xfrman, The Randall kickup was a sight, he attempted it again late in the game and kicked into another player. I think it was Johnson or Wright.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 10:52 am

It was Johnson.

Comment by xfmrman 12.07.13 @ 11:47 am

@xfrman, thanks Have you noticed Robinson getting chippy two games in a row. Since he is getting a little more muscular he seems to be getting more belligerent as well. Is it just me or have you noticed it too.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 11:59 am

spirit, I’ve seen that too. Maybe he’s compensating for how he believes he is being perceived, with a baby face and all.

Psycho-babble, sorry.

Who knows. A good question for the press.

Comment by steve1 12.07.13 @ 12:16 pm

I have. And I like the attitude.
Even in the post game interview, Robinson referenced his size advantage.

Comment by xfmrman 12.07.13 @ 12:28 pm

So much to like about this team. I’m really excited to see this squad compete every other night in the ACC to see how they hold up.

My only concern is that while the offense and shooting have both improved, they still seem to be very streaky from 3-pt range. If I’m not mistaken, this is 3 games out of 9 where they’ve only made about 1 three or shot less than 15% from beyond the arc.

Against our OOC schedule, not a big deal. Against NC, Duke, etc. that’s going to spell some losses.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 12.07.13 @ 12:38 pm

BGP, Anyone who shoots the 3 will have off nights even the elite. Look at last years Michigan team that lost at Penn St. The thing that will help this team get past that is that they shoot the 10′ to 12′ shot and seem to have a knack of getting looks at it. I am also excited about our scoring from the foul line. I would prefer not to be a team that is dependent on the 3. We are faster and run the court better too and will see more transition points.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 12:51 pm

@xferman, It looks like Robinson is attending Cam Wright bicep school. He has Wright type arms in training. As the arms grow so will the confidence.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 12:54 pm

Nice win last night. However we have
much to learn. Zanna better stay out of
foul trouble as Randall is not very good
on the offensive end. Anxious for the real
games to start. By the way before anyone
disrespects Pitt’s schedule check out the
preconderence games other top teams
are playing. Most have 2 or 3 key games
surrounded by weak teams.

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 1:00 pm

@JR I concur on Zanna comment and note that Talib has his shortcomings but has been generally free of foul trouble most of his career. The new charging interpretation won’t hurt him either. Those looking for him to disappear in conference this year could be surprised too as the ACC style is more fitted to his game. Is it just me or does Zanna seem more comfortable at center than he looked forward?

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 1:12 pm

We were both wrong. It was Chris Jones who was in Randall’s way on the 2nd Kip-up attempt.

Comment by xfmrman 12.07.13 @ 1:31 pm

@xfmrman, I am curious how you found out. Is there somewhere you can rewatch the game?

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 1:39 pm

Attended the game last night. I was able to move down by The Zoo. The Zoo was very tame by their standards. On my walk to the car after the game I heard students talking about heading to the library to study.

Zanna with another strong game. Zanna still looks most comfortable to me facing the basket. However he has developed a back to the basket game. It will be interesting to see whether he can carry it through the ACC schedule. Randall has struggled the last two games.

Durand Johnson impressed me the most last night. First half made some questionable passes and took some questionable shots. However he played much better in the second half.

The thing that impresses me most about this team is balance. It can be anybody on any given night. Hot hand (Wright versus Duquesne), go there. Matchup to exploit (Zanna versus PSU), go there.

The other thing that impresses me is how many good mid range shooters this team has.

I surely do hope that Zanna picks up his free throw shooting.

Xferman, Speaking of Jones, what do you make of him? I find it interesting that with the guards we have, plus those in the pipeline, there doesn’t seem to be much room for Jones. Yet Dixon still finds him some minutes and when he gets in he does OK. Is the jury still out on Jones? Because of his size could he still be developing and have potential down the road? Or is he likely to get squeezed out when Mostella shows up.

@Barvo, Zanna hasn’t been throwing bricks up there. Most of his misses have been in and out. His last 2 misses against Penn St. looked to be from tired legs. I think he will be alright at the line. 70% or above

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 1:59 pm

My opinion of Jones is that Coach Dixon must really like him.
I heard that he will have surgery after the season.
In Greentree, he could not miss.

I would be (pleasantly, if it does not disrupt chemistry)surprised to see Mostella this year.
But, like you said, with Johnson 6’6″, Jeeter 6’7″, Artis 6’7″ (who will probably play at the 3 spot), Mostella, Wright 6’4″, and Newkirk, where does Jones fit next year?

Comment by xfmrman 12.07.13 @ 2:08 pm

He hasn’t gotten much in the way of “competitive minutes” but he hasn’t gotten chased away either. What kind of surgery? What makes you think Dixon is high on him? When he has played he has done fine. He has only gotten a few more minutes than Norwanko who for a walk on academic scholarship player has played very well. he actually looks like he could contribute in a pinch.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 2:19 pm

Surgery on his hand/wrist.
I think Dixon likes him because of the way he talks about him and the way he tries to get him minutes.

Comment by xfmrman 12.07.13 @ 2:29 pm

Xfmrman Appreciate your imput. Where do you sit at the Pete?

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 2:40 pm

The only weakness that I see on this team is at the 5 spot. If Zanna gets in foul trouble early or gets injured for any length of time, “our ACC debut is in serious do-do”

Comment by pittman4ever 12.07.13 @ 3:03 pm

Z-man broke his thumb his redshirt sophomore year screwing around. He has never been foul prone though but I agree our freshman forwards and Randall would be hard pressed to overcome losing Talib If that were to happen I would move Young to the 5 to share time with Randall. Patterson helps at the 4 with Artis and Johnson gets more minutes at the 3.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 3:11 pm

^sorry I meant redshirt freshman year

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 3:13 pm

Pittman4ever, Losing Patterson, Wright or Robinson to injury would be tough to overcome too. Let’s just stay healthy and out of foul trouble. Then all we really have to worry about is if playing these patsies has created an illusion and maybe we are going to get clocked when we start playing some real teams.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.07.13 @ 3:19 pm

Watching AU – MO. Fast pace. I remember Phinbomb (SEC radio guy, now at ESPN) said that MO does not belong in SEC. They are not of SEC quality.

Comment by Frank MD 12.07.13 @ 5:12 pm

Watching the SEC game. Pitt has a long
way to go to be competitive on the
national scene. Speed on both teams
is incredible (comparatively speaking).

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 5:20 pm

Game on astro turf, put them on grass and they drop speed a bit.

Comment by Frank MD 12.07.13 @ 5:31 pm

Glad Pitt is NOT in the SEC. The teams
have size and speed at all positions.

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 5:40 pm

I hope Pitt never plays defense like either of these SEC teams. This is a bad football game. Defense is half of the game.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 7:21 pm

Do you actually believe Pitt could
hold Auburn to 59 points? Or Mizzou
to 42? Old Dominion scored 24 points
on pitt.

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 8:52 pm

I don’t believe Pitt is in the same league as either of those teams…I also believe that Auburn and Mizzu put on a display of bad football today. Both defenses gave up more than 500 yards of offense. Mizzu gave up 545 yards rushing….that’s not a bad day, that is an embarrassingly bad day for a defense.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 10:13 pm

Hgbfrank – auburn would hang 110 on us and house by halftime.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.07.13 @ 11:01 pm

What does what Auburn would do to Pitt have to do with the fact that the SEC laid an egg in their championship game? Between the two teams there were more than 1,200 yards of offense and more than 100 points. I’ll say it again, that is bad football.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 11:25 pm

Here’s an interesting thing that happened as a result of Ohio State losing…The #8 Big 10 team that is supposed to go to the Little Caesar’s Bowl is now Michigan. Michigan 7-5, 3-5 in their conference. We are 6-6, 3-5. Would be an interesting game…

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.08.13 @ 12:22 am

The point was i think it was an enjoyable game. People want offense not 7-3 bs put you asleep games.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 1:04 am

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 1:23 am

Steve. I would love 10 wins and PAC 12 South Division winner and he beat 4-5 good teams.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 1:39 am

Upitt who did he beat the PAC 12 south sucks and they cheated wisky out of a W, cheating and toad go together tho! What kills me is that people expect HCPC to win more with bums, Tino had a better year than Savage and the numbers prove it but he was supposed to win with sack master Tom!!! Tino was 2 missed field goals from winning 8 and Savage sucked so badly in the red zone and people here blame coaching for losing to Navy and UNC meanwhile Savage couldn’t get the fucking ball in the endzone but he gets a pass I just don’t get it. HCPC is trying to put a system in place to give this team some badly needed cohesiveness and everybody wants to bash him the 10 wins seasons will come it is going to take 4 or 5 years to do it

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 2:14 am

I just hope we go bowling. Many predictions now say Pitt is out. This is the time when a good AD comes in handy.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:08 am

Unfortunately you don’t have five years to do it anymore. And what leads you to believe this staff is capable of being more than mediocre. You think the two star talent being recruited will help. We go up against teams pulling in an avg star of 3.3. Pitt is at 2.8. We need more four stars. Hopefully the ones still left will pick Pitt. But we also need better coaches and recruiters. Chryst needs someone like a Slice or Herrion.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:16 am

And please don’t defend Tino. Savage performed admirably in his first year under this system. I credit Bollinger. Savage will make a fine NFL backup. Tino will be scrubbing toilets wearing an FSU shirt.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:21 am

Pitt will stay home this bowl season. I feel bad for the seniors but they had opportunities to win several games but were not disciplined enough. Our special teams cost us three victories. Hopefully, Chryst will lobby for an assistant special teams coach that knows how to coach special teams.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.08.13 @ 8:56 am

I’m not defending Tino, the fact that this staff has won 12 games with talent like that at QB and made these players serviceable is good coaching. Tom Savage in the NFL LMFAO!!!!!!! How about HCPC was the first Pitt coach to have a 3000 yard passer a 1000 yard rusher and a 1000 yard receiver. Boyd is great and PC has highly rated O lineman and QB’s and RB’s coming. Let’s see how he does with a good QB

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 8:59 am

I count 80 teams bowl eligible for 70 bowl slots. So Pitt must beat out 10 teams. We needed one more win.

Comment by Frank MD 12.08.13 @ 9:49 am

Actually only BC and Miami played FSU closer than Pitt. Now AU gets to play their second game on grass.

When will we know definitely whether there is or isn’t a bowl?

Comment by pitt1972 12.08.13 @ 11:18 am

Loved to see Ohio State go down. The Big 10 did not belong in the championship game.

As usual, I disagree with UPitt, I like strong defense, although I am fine with Auburn in the championship. We will see if FSU has a defense strong enough.

Anyway some huge hits in the FSU game. Scoreboard didn’t show it but Duke hit hard and came to play. FSU with too many weapons. The best QB in football even with a slow start. Has anyone ever had a better group of receivers? A defense that swarms and gang tackles.

I do share the concern about Chryst recruiting, especially on defense. The equivalent of Slice would be nice.

Loved seeing AZ ST trounced by the Nerd Herd. Pundits say PAC 12 is the second best, I don’t see it.

Why in the world did TJ McConnell go to Duquesne? Nice to see him and Sean beat Birch, although Birch and his team do look better. Birch has put on muscle. Imagine if we had Adams and Birch this year. Oh well, chemistry probably better without them.

I really hope that FSU can end the SEC’s string. Great for the ACC and college football in general.
Much better game without Ohio State.

Comment by gc 12.08.13 @ 11:27 am

Let’s hope all the kids study hard and make the grade this week, we don’t need any surprises.

I said we didn’t deserve a bowl, but I still want one. That Navy game was a killer.

Sure would like to see Savage and Donald one more time. Donald may have the marquis value to save the day, I sure hope so.

Comment by gc 12.08.13 @ 11:34 am

I know it is early in the season, but…
One of the biggest changes from last year’s basketball team is the increase in possessions per game (ppg).
Pitt has historically been a slow, methodical, yet very efficient offense. Although the (O and D) efficiencies are similar, this year there is evidence the pace may be changing.
Last year, through 9 games, Pitt averaged 61.8 possessions per game (ppg); and that number includes an overtime game with Oakland (68 ppg).
So far this year They are averaging 66.6 ppg. This may not seem like a big difference, but consider last year, Pitt’s pace was ranked 338 of 347, while this year they are 266 of 351.
When the team averages 1.2 points per possession (and factoring the OT game) that is another 7 points per game for; and allows .91 ppp, there is a net of 2 points in Pitt’s favor. In a close game….

Comment by xfmrman 12.08.13 @ 11:56 am

And free throws. They are both good at drawing them and now making them.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 11:59 am

Think we are in for some bad news tomorrow. Dravon Henry to announce his choice and I fear it is going to be the Hoopies.

If this staff loses out on all these remaining recruits this year is pretty much a disaster. With the lost recruiting classes due to the coaching changes, coach Chryst cannot afford any mediocre classes. I hope I’m wrong on Henry, gut tells me it’s not gonna be good news tomorrow…

Comment by Pap76 12.08.13 @ 2:32 pm

Typical gut based prognostication without any real inside info and extending it to additional recruits as well, also without any real info. This is similar to the way ancient Greek soothsayers predicted the future by examining the entrails of a slaughtered animal.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 5:35 pm

@xfmrman, good points! The tempo makes Pitt a huge transition threat off of every defensive rebound.

Another improvement is the extension of the zone so that it is effective against the three and leads to steals of passes on the perimeter. Two or three times this season, moving to the zone gave Pitt one steal after another which caused Pitt to pull away.

Unfortunately, LMU was ready for the Pitt zone on Friday. Hopefully, Dixon will have Pitt ready with an effective counter the next time a team tries to attack the Pitt zone the way LMU did.

BG is not a bad team. If I had to guess Id think they will open up as the favorite. They beat a pretty good NI team in the MAC Championship Game. Plus their QB has a chip on his sholder about Pitt not recruiting him when he wanted to go to Pitt.

Pitt will do what we always do and play down to the opponent. It’s like Christmas and New Years, you know it’s coming and it will happen! I will be driving from DC to New England and will miss the game! Not only that it’s the in laws! Double whammy! Hope they win this year and get some buzz going for next year! Come on Henry, get a great education, come to Pitt!

I was looking at the Pomroy basketball ratings. Can someone please explain to me how we are ranked 4th ahead of teams like Syracuse ,Duke, NCarolina and even other undefeateds like Oregon. As good as we have looked I don’t think we really fit in the top 5 although leaving us out of the top 25 might not be real accurate either. Why would we score so high in this metric?
