Open Thread: LMU-Pitt

Okay, Loyola Marymount isn’t a bad team. They aren’t great, but they aren’t bottom feeders. They have a dynamo-type point guard, in Anthony Ireland, to give Pitt some problems. They are getting some good help inside from their freshman forward, Gabe Levin.

As Coach Jamie Dixon notes, they press a bit and go up-tempo. But they will definitely struggle to get Pitt to push the tempo beyond any comfort zone.

I’m going to have to watch it later tonight. The kids’ school is doing one of those fundraisers where they will do a mass babysitting of kids for the evening on the cheap. You just don’t pass up those opportunities to get a night out with your spouse. Doubly so, when you don’t have to spend a ton on babysitting costs.

The game starts at 7:00 on ESPN3.com.

Game on astro turf, put them on grass and they drop speed a bit.

Comment by Frank MD 12.07.13 @ 5:31 pm

@@@@@@

Glad Pitt is NOT in the SEC. The teams
have size and speed at all positions.

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 5:40 pm

I hope Pitt never plays defense like either of these SEC teams. This is a bad football game. Defense is half of the game.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 7:21 pm

@@@@@

Do you actually believe Pitt could
hold Auburn to 59 points? Or Mizzou
to 42? Old Dominion scored 24 points
on pitt.

Comment by JR 12.07.13 @ 8:52 pm

I don’t believe Pitt is in the same league as either of those teams…I also believe that Auburn and Mizzu put on a display of bad football today. Both defenses gave up more than 500 yards of offense. Mizzu gave up 545 yards rushing….that’s not a bad day, that is an embarrassingly bad day for a defense.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 10:13 pm

Hgbfrank – auburn would hang 110 on us and house by halftime.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.07.13 @ 11:01 pm

What does what Auburn would do to Pitt have to do with the fact that the SEC laid an egg in their championship game? Between the two teams there were more than 1,200 yards of offense and more than 100 points. I’ll say it again, that is bad football.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.07.13 @ 11:25 pm

Here’s an interesting thing that happened as a result of Ohio State losing…The #8 Big 10 team that is supposed to go to the Little Caesar’s Bowl is now Michigan. Michigan 7-5, 3-5 in their conference. We are 6-6, 3-5. Would be an interesting game…

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.08.13 @ 12:22 am

The point was i think it was an enjoyable game. People want offense not 7-3 bs put you asleep games.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 1:04 am

Take that Todd Gramm fans what a good season you played nobody then got embarrassed at home twice to a team that had problems with ND!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 1:23 am

Steve. I would love 10 wins and PAC 12 South Division winner and he beat 4-5 good teams.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 1:39 am

Upitt who did he beat the PAC 12 south sucks and they cheated wisky out of a W, cheating and toad go together tho! What kills me is that people expect HCPC to win more with bums, Tino had a better year than Savage and the numbers prove it but he was supposed to win with sack master Tom!!! Tino was 2 missed field goals from winning 8 and Savage sucked so badly in the red zone and people here blame coaching for losing to Navy and UNC meanwhile Savage couldn’t get the fucking ball in the endzone but he gets a pass I just don’t get it. HCPC is trying to put a system in place to give this team some badly needed cohesiveness and everybody wants to bash him the 10 wins seasons will come it is going to take 4 or 5 years to do it

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 2:14 am

I just hope we go bowling. Many predictions now say Pitt is out. This is the time when a good AD comes in handy.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:08 am

Unfortunately you don’t have five years to do it anymore. And what leads you to believe this staff is capable of being more than mediocre. You think the two star talent being recruited will help. We go up against teams pulling in an avg star of 3.3. Pitt is at 2.8. We need more four stars. Hopefully the ones still left will pick Pitt. But we also need better coaches and recruiters. Chryst needs someone like a Slice or Herrion.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:16 am

And please don’t defend Tino. Savage performed admirably in his first year under this system. I credit Bollinger. Savage will make a fine NFL backup. Tino will be scrubbing toilets wearing an FSU shirt.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 8:21 am

Pitt will stay home this bowl season. I feel bad for the seniors but they had opportunities to win several games but were not disciplined enough. Our special teams cost us three victories. Hopefully, Chryst will lobby for an assistant special teams coach that knows how to coach special teams.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.08.13 @ 8:56 am

I’m not defending Tino, the fact that this staff has won 12 games with talent like that at QB and made these players serviceable is good coaching. Tom Savage in the NFL LMFAO!!!!!!! How about HCPC was the first Pitt coach to have a 3000 yard passer a 1000 yard rusher and a 1000 yard receiver. Boyd is great and PC has highly rated O lineman and QB’s and RB’s coming. Let’s see how he does with a good QB

Comment by Steve h 12.08.13 @ 8:59 am

I count 80 teams bowl eligible for 70 bowl slots. So Pitt must beat out 10 teams. We needed one more win.

Comment by Frank MD 12.08.13 @ 9:49 am

Actually only BC and Miami played FSU closer than Pitt. Now AU gets to play their second game on grass.

Comment by Frank MD 12.08.13 @ 10:11 am

Butger’s whose only quality win was Arkansas, lost to UCONN and playedasoft schedule – gets a bid…Pitt will be left out,so much for Yinz complaining ahout Detroit!

Pitt Bowl Projection: Advocare V100, 12/31 against W. Kentucky

Comment by MariettaMike 12.08.13 @ 10:15 am

MD and RUT no easy path next year in B10. Anyway we beat ND already.

Comment by Frank MD 12.08.13 @ 10:45 am

Congrats to Suzie and the Lady Panthers for getting the win on the road against Wagner. It’ going to take time but help is on the way with her first recruiting class! Congrats as well to Chancellor Nordenberg for winning the Fu Dapper Dan Leadership Award! Appreciate everything you have done for the University Chancellor! H2P! UPone

Comment by UPone 12.08.13 @ 10:45 am

How about offering Pitt Chancellorship to Condoleezza Rice. Help athletics and fund raising.

Comment by Frank MD 12.08.13 @ 10:53 am

When will we know definitely whether there is or isn’t a bowl?

Comment by pitt1972 12.08.13 @ 11:18 am

Loved to see Ohio State go down. The Big 10 did not belong in the championship game.

As usual, I disagree with UPitt, I like strong defense, although I am fine with Auburn in the championship. We will see if FSU has a defense strong enough.

Anyway some huge hits in the FSU game. Scoreboard didn’t show it but Duke hit hard and came to play. FSU with too many weapons. The best QB in football even with a slow start. Has anyone ever had a better group of receivers? A defense that swarms and gang tackles.

I do share the concern about Chryst recruiting, especially on defense. The equivalent of Slice would be nice.

Loved seeing AZ ST trounced by the Nerd Herd. Pundits say PAC 12 is the second best, I don’t see it.

Why in the world did TJ McConnell go to Duquesne? Nice to see him and Sean beat Birch, although Birch and his team do look better. Birch has put on muscle. Imagine if we had Adams and Birch this year. Oh well, chemistry probably better without them.

I really hope that FSU can end the SEC’s string. Great for the ACC and college football in general.
Much better game without Ohio State.

Comment by gc 12.08.13 @ 11:27 am

Let’s hope all the kids study hard and make the grade this week, we don’t need any surprises.

I said we didn’t deserve a bowl, but I still want one. That Navy game was a killer.

Sure would like to see Savage and Donald one more time. Donald may have the marquis value to save the day, I sure hope so.

Comment by gc 12.08.13 @ 11:34 am

I know it is early in the season, but…
One of the biggest changes from last year’s basketball team is the increase in possessions per game (ppg).
Pitt has historically been a slow, methodical, yet very efficient offense. Although the (O and D) efficiencies are similar, this year there is evidence the pace may be changing.
Last year, through 9 games, Pitt averaged 61.8 possessions per game (ppg); and that number includes an overtime game with Oakland (68 ppg).
So far this year They are averaging 66.6 ppg. This may not seem like a big difference, but consider last year, Pitt’s pace was ranked 338 of 347, while this year they are 266 of 351.
When the team averages 1.2 points per possession (and factoring the OT game) that is another 7 points per game for; and allows .91 ppp, there is a net of 2 points in Pitt’s favor. In a close game….

Comment by xfmrman 12.08.13 @ 11:56 am

And free throws. They are both good at drawing them and now making them.

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 11:59 am

Think we are in for some bad news tomorrow. Dravon Henry to announce his choice and I fear it is going to be the Hoopies.

If this staff loses out on all these remaining recruits this year is pretty much a disaster. With the lost recruiting classes due to the coaching changes, coach Chryst cannot afford any mediocre classes. I hope I’m wrong on Henry, gut tells me it’s not gonna be good news tomorrow…

Comment by Pap76 12.08.13 @ 2:32 pm

Typical gut based prognostication without any real inside info and extending it to additional recruits as well, also without any real info. This is similar to the way ancient Greek soothsayers predicted the future by examining the entrails of a slaughtered animal.

Comment by pitt1972 12.08.13 @ 3:17 pm

Henry is going to the “U”.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 3:45 pm

Glad to see the all time series with LMU is now tied up.

Comment by alcofan 12.08.13 @ 3:49 pm

Shady, 25 carries for 203 yds 2 touchdowns. Thats our guy.

Comment by alcofan 12.08.13 @ 3:51 pm

Bowling Green ?

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 5:35 pm

@xfmrman, good points! The tempo makes Pitt a huge transition threat off of every defensive rebound.

Another improvement is the extension of the zone so that it is effective against the three and leads to steals of passes on the perimeter. Two or three times this season, moving to the zone gave Pitt one steal after another which caused Pitt to pull away.

Unfortunately, LMU was ready for the Pitt zone on Friday. Hopefully, Dixon will have Pitt ready with an effective counter the next time a team tries to attack the Pitt zone the way LMU did.

Strike 1. Game is in Detroit
Strike 2. The game is the day after xmas. No one will attend.
Strike 3. If we dont beat a MAC Team we are the laughing stock going into 2014.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.08.13 @ 5:55 pm

We’ll be lucky to score over 14 points against their D. Looks like a tough matchup. BG 30 – Pitt 14

Comment by TX Panther 12.08.13 @ 5:58 pm

BG is not a bad team. If I had to guess Id think they will open up as the favorite. They beat a pretty good NI team in the MAC Championship Game. Plus their QB has a chip on his sholder about Pitt not recruiting him when he wanted to go to Pitt.

Comment by pitt Flunky 12.08.13 @ 6:26 pm

Pitt will do what we always do and play down to the opponent. It’s like Christmas and New Years, you know it’s coming and it will happen! I will be driving from DC to New England and will miss the game! Not only that it’s the in laws! Double whammy! Hope they win this year and get some buzz going for next year! Come on Henry, get a great education, come to Pitt!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 12.08.13 @ 6:38 pm

I was looking at the Pomroy basketball ratings. Can someone please explain to me how we are ranked 4th ahead of teams like Syracuse ,Duke, NCarolina and even other undefeateds like Oregon. As good as we have looked I don’t think we really fit in the top 5 although leaving us out of the top 25 might not be real accurate either. Why would we score so high in this metric?
