Coach Paul Chryst via the Pitt website:

“I understand the speculation surrounding my name given today’s developments. I am committed to the Pitt football program and the University of Pittsburgh. I am focusing all my time and energy on our team’s bowl game preparation and recruiting a great group of young men to join our program and this outstanding university. We are working hard every day to re-establish this program and I am excited about the future of Pitt football.”

So that is positive. Good to see Chryst and the Pitt Athletic Department realize that they had to say something.

That said, plenty of wiggle room and I won’t be exhaling completely until Wisconsin hires someone else.

still taking a wait and see approach here.

That’s not a book it, but close enough for this day.

Comment by J Bizz 12.04.12 @ 8:31 pm

I’m telling all my PSU friends that I think Wisconsin should hire Bill O’Brien.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 12.04.12 @ 8:32 pm

I hope Barry hires new coach quick so this story will die

Comment by why me 12.04.12 @ 8:35 pm

Chryst will be interviewing this week. I just hope the decision is made quickly on Barry’s part. ABC…Anybody But Chryst.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.12 @ 8:38 pm

Bill O’Brien to Wisconsin. Let’s make this happen.

Comment by Kyle 12.04.12 @ 8:42 pm

Even if Chryst isn’t interested in the job, or vice versa, isn’t it in Wisconsin’s interest to have it seem as though Chryst is in play? Play prospective candidates off against one another, create some buzz…

Comment by Brendan 12.04.12 @ 8:44 pm

Bill O’Brien to Wisconsin and JayPa back to PSU.
How sweet it is!!!!!

Comment by Gas 12.04.12 @ 8:45 pm

Chryst knows that if he leaves what a devastating blow it would be to the Pitt program, he is not the kind of person to do that to the people who gave him his first job. He will handle this with class and will remain the Pitt HC because it is the right thing to do, that is just who he is!

Comment by Steve h 12.04.12 @ 8:48 pm

Can we have Corey Clement back now?

Comment by Chet Masterson 12.04.12 @ 8:48 pm

I believe Coach Chryst is a man of his word and he will stay. Pitt is his Program. He is going to make a hell of a name for himself here. I think a homesick move home is a weak move for a guy with a strong character. He remembers that Pitt gave him his BIG break. I see him as a man of integrity. HE STAYS AND SUCCEEDS!

Comment by BARREMAN 12.04.12 @ 8:53 pm

I sincerely hope that he is more “committed” than Ben Howland was. Remember he said pretty much the same thing about the UCLA job and then bolted for the west coast within a couple weeks!

Comment by Greg from State College 12.04.12 @ 8:55 pm

Was concerned until the statement
was released. PC seems to be a man of his
word and an old school FB coach. We
will see.

Comment by JR 12.04.12 @ 8:57 pm

The press release says NOTHING…

It doesn’t mention whether or not he is interested in Wisky… etc.

Comment by Joe D 12.04.12 @ 9:03 pm

I really like Coach Chryst and hope he stays. The future is very bright with him. I can’t imagine this happening again to us.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 12.04.12 @ 9:04 pm

All the right words by coach Chryst to calm Pitt fans’ nerves. I would be very surprised if Alvarez does not interview coach Chryst regardless of the hefty buyout clause in his contract with Pitt. Lets hope we keep coach Chryst but if he gets to go back home there is nothing we can do. In this day of instant gratification, coaching tenure is an oxymoron. And we know its always about $$. Always!

Comment by MariettaMike 12.04.12 @ 9:05 pm

You never really know. I remember sitting at brunch in Fitzgerald Field House, and asking Roper if Johny Majors was going to leave for Tennessee and he replied, “I hope not. Here when we lose a game everyone pats us on the back and tells us, we’ll get them next time. In Tennessee they want to hang you.” Well Johny Majors left for his alma mater. I never thought Jackie Sherrill would walk away from a potential national championship team after a Sugar Bowl win, but he did. He was a southerner and the lure of going home is difficult dynamic to gage. I hope Paul Chryst stays, but I also will holding my breath until the Wisconsin hire is made.

Comment by Justinian 12.04.12 @ 9:06 pm

that was not a good enough statement he did not
say he was staying at pitt only said what he was
focusing on right now.
to many holes in that statement that was kind of double talk.
i will be worryed till wisconsin hires a coach or chryst comes out in plain english and says he is
staying.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.12 @ 9:07 pm

Good to see some voices of reason commenting. Coach Paul Chryst is not going anywhere. Interesting comment about Corey Clement. I wonder if that puts him back in play?

Comment by John In South Carolina 12.04.12 @ 9:12 pm

Every site thinks its a lock chryst is top candidate For job. Ill say this, if chyrst turns down his dream job to stay at Pitt…he has earned my respect.

Btw. Bret was making 2.5 mil. Would be a nice pay increase for chryst

Comment by why me 12.04.12 @ 9:18 pm

I agree with JoeD….Chryst may as well been talking about the weather. That statement doesn’t impress me one bit.

Of course Chryst is not real great with words…

Jackie Sherrill went to Texas A&M because of $$$…Pitt of course wouldn’t pay him.

Comment by Jackagain 12.04.12 @ 9:23 pm

allthat statement said was no one from wisconsin has called me i am doeing my job at pitt.
in outher words stay tuned or we will see
as the world turns.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.12 @ 9:29 pm

I’m very concerned. There is one word missing from the statement….

“neat”

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.04.12 @ 9:31 pm

But if he should leave and if he does we will be sat back for years. So if he does i want a pitt man for coach becuse we know they wont leave in a year.
i dont care who as long as he is a pitt man thru and thru .

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.12 @ 9:36 pm

I believe Chryst contract buyout is $10million after 1 year.. I doubt Wisky will pay that…

Comment by Joe D 12.04.12 @ 9:50 pm

Frank, we had one and he apparently wasn’t good enough for a lot of you. As the saying goes you reap what you sew. I hope he stays, but if he doesn’t then there is NO WAY pederson can possibly still have a job.

Comment by John 12.04.12 @ 9:54 pm

Frankcan, I fully understand your sentiments. I just hope we can go another few years without a coaching change. The program needs stability first and foremost. We need to build on the systems that have been installed and not have reshuffle the deck every year. Also recruiting is the lifeblood of a program and kids expect the people that recruited them to be there.

Comment by Justinian 12.04.12 @ 9:58 pm

$10 million buyout for Chryst? I like him but there are a lot of better coaches out there that can be had for less than that! I think Wisconsin will want a bigger name honestly. Can’t blame PC if he went though, anyone in his shoes would.

Comment by Howard 12.04.12 @ 10:03 pm

“Jackie Sherrill went to Texas A&M because of $$$…Pitt of course wouldn’t pay him.”

Not exactly true, it was all about POWER. Jackie wanted to be the AD, the Killer B’s wanted to keep him in a box. Also, Jackie felt obligated to take the position per the Bear.

Comment by pittbluegold 12.04.12 @ 10:04 pm

Hardly. This means nothing. He should’ve said that he isn’t going anywhere. He’s a goner.

Comment by TonyC 12.04.12 @ 10:06 pm

I think Chryst will stay. Pitt should offer incentives to keep him. I like him.

Comment by frank MD 12.04.12 @ 10:06 pm

Just read chryst called chapman saying he is staying at Pitt. Chapman visiting this weekend. Also chryst had a meeting this afternoon to let them know he isnt leaving.

Comment by why me 12.04.12 @ 10:07 pm

I’m so tired of the ‘Pitt man’ talk…none of the coaches who won here in FB or BB were ever Pitt men. Majors(first go around), Sherill, Howland, Evans, Harris, Dixon: None were ‘Pitt men’ when they were hired….Fago, Wanny, Majors were all Pitt men and they all took the program backwords.

Comment by milobloom 12.04.12 @ 10:08 pm

Wanny took the program backwards and then forwards milobloom, he was fired at the high point of Pitt football in the past 20-30 years, which caused the program to turn backwards. Look at the roster when he left, some of those players are still the best ones on the team (all the current decent players were Wanny recruits I think?). However, I agree that the Pitt man talk is BS.

Comment by Howard 12.04.12 @ 10:12 pm

Sherrill left for money and power, but it was mostly because of money. The raise was huge for those days.

link to pittmag.pitt.edu

Comment by Jackagain 12.04.12 @ 10:16 pm

Jackie was about control and respect. He had a vision and Pitt wanted him castrated. Money was secondary but a nice plus. With Chryst, I’m sure it is more than money. Passing up a dream job if offered will be difficult and its not like Whiskey will ever play Pitt or he’ll be back in Pittsburgh for any reason afterwards. Some people will hate him for it. Others will be disappointed but understand. Let’s just hope there are better candidates for that open position out there. But, Barry does like him and Barry calls the shots. Again, I just hope this doesn’t drag on. There had better be a huge buyout clause and Stevie better have his short list ready. If Chryst does leave, I still want Stevie canned. No AD should be allowed to keep his job after 4 and soon to be 5 coaching changes in 2 years. No excuses. That reason alone Imma is why.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.12 @ 10:16 pm

Yes Sherrill left for more money, but I really think the bigger issue was power. He walked away from 11 and 1 team, with almost everyone coming back. He missed out on the opportunity to possibly win a national Championship. Jackie Sherrill never came anywhere as close as he got in his last season at Pitt. As you get older you realize there is more in life than just money.

Comment by Justinian 12.04.12 @ 10:29 pm

Coach Chryst was hired because he’s is a football guy with integrity that can provide the stability that Pitt needs to be successful. His character was why he was hired…why we all think he will be a great coach…and why he will stay. This is not a news story. Hail to Pitt

Comment by BomberSunshine 12.04.12 @ 10:35 pm

One second we are debating Pitt script and the next this…

Comment by Pitt Is IT 12.04.12 @ 10:49 pm

From what I read Bielema wants to coach Wisky in the Rose Bowl. So if he stays that long, it would also seem Chyrst would stay at Pitt to coach his bowl game. Now what happens behind the scenes between now and then is anyone’s guess.

Since as many noted, the stmt didn’t stay he was staying at Pitt, just committed.

I am committed to what I’m employed in atm, however if something better came along and made more sense to me, I would no longer be committed to what I’m doing. And yes in the past I have continued to recruit ppl to one opportunity and then pull up stakes and take some of these ppl with me. It’s very common is business.

Big Problem now is, since Stevie Cornhole wasn’t fired when he should have been, after the Chyrst hire. He can’t be now as we wouldn’t have an AD to lead a possible new HC search.

This is a self fulfilling prophecy of failure that has been allowed to continue by extremely poor decisions that have been made by Pitt administrators that are in charge.

Is anyone in charge ??

Comment by Emel 12.04.12 @ 10:50 pm

Emel, mostly agree, but Pedie would have to go. I would say there’s no way that he could stay, but who knows? I’d be extremely disappointed if a systemic change was not made.

Comment by panther94 12.04.12 @ 10:58 pm

Ed Bozik was the idiot in charge that left Sherrill walk and started an immediate spiral down of PITT football, that it has NEVER recovered from.

Of course he did it with Posvar’s blessing. Although Posvar did many great things at PITT, this wasn’t one of them.

Why they hired someone like Bozik with no prior experience in college athletics is still a question asked to this day.

Comment by Emel 12.04.12 @ 11:02 pm

Sometimes a big stick of dynamite does wonders. If it comes down to it, blow the whole thing up and start over. The timing is good with the move to the ACC. Who knows…we might get a better coach, a better AD, Pitt script back, and that elusive BCS game.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.12 @ 11:04 pm

I agree. Bozik was a Bozo. He started Pitt football’s demise. Stevie Penisson has continued it and will put it 6 feet under if Pitt boosters and fans don’t do something about it. Nordy sure the hell won’t do anything.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.12 @ 11:06 pm

cochran wears the pants ,his finger prints will soon show up

Comment by paul shannon 12.04.12 @ 11:09 pm

All of a sudden it seems even the biggest detractors are realizing the value of having Chryst as Pitt’s Head Coach.

If he does stay, and that’s a big “IF”… I would hope those same detractors come to realize INTEGRITY when they’re witnessing it.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.04.12 @ 11:13 pm

By the way, should Chryst leave for his “Dream Job”… Rudolph is your new Head Coach.

No question about it.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.04.12 @ 11:17 pm

The following from the Trib Review…

“Quarterback Tra’von Chapman, who is the Panthers’ prize recruit from the Class of 2013, said he received a phone call from secondary coach Matt House, telling him that Chryst is not leaving.

“He said they are not going anywhere,” Chapman said. “They are not going to Wisconsin. He said, ‘Spread the word. The rumors are false.’

Should Chryst say “No” to Wisconsin… it will undoubtedly have a big impact on recruits.

Saying “No” might also mean Pitt signing Chryst to an extension which would only add to the impact.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.04.12 @ 11:26 pm

Rudolph is not HC material..
He has OC in title only… Chryst is call all the offensive plays.

Comment by Joe D 12.04.12 @ 11:38 pm

Badger fans are as confused as Pitt fans. Browsing the Badger Facebook page tho they seem to want AD Barry Alveraz to return to coaching for the Rose Bowl and beyond. Alveraz is 66 y/o

Comment by Mtoolmn 12.04.12 @ 11:45 pm

I didn’t put this together until just now:

The one and only Jeff Long is the AD that hired Bielema away from Wisconsin. Coincidence…? I really don’t know. Even so… JEFF LONG DID SOMETHING GOOD?!?! WHAT?!?!

This is getting a little spooky guys…

Comment by Levance's Headband 12.04.12 @ 11:50 pm

That would be perfect- Barry for a couple more years and then Chryst can step in after taking Pitt to the NC in 2015 or so…

Comment by Dan35 12.04.12 @ 11:51 pm

[…] there is no doubt that the reasons he would take the job would be about comfort and going home. While he has issued a statement. It is fair to say that it has little in actual teeth in terms of actual […]
