Finding The Next Kicker

Given all the close games Pitt has lost in the last three years, a reliable kicker seems like a necessity. Yet, Kevin Harper is going to be a senior and there is no apparent next guy up.

I’m not sure what kind of value Coach Paul Chryst places on kickers. Whether he actively seeks out the good ones or if he just trusts in finding one via walk-ons (preferred or otherwise).

Well, I’m sure a few Pitt coaches will be at the PSFCA East-West Game being played at Gateway High’s stadium this Sunday. Hopefully they will check out East’s kicker, Brad Lukasak. He’s hoping to hear from Pitt about getting a shot this fall.

“In practice, I’ve hit from beyond 60. My record is a 66-yarder,” Lukasak said. “With a snapper and holder, my record is about 55 yards. I have the range for over 50. I can hit 55 usually.”

That range is something Lukasak hopes to show off Sunday in the East-West game. With a couple practices under their belts, Lukasak already appreciates the camaraderie the all-star squad has built.

Playing with the East’s 32 other stars is something to which the Blue Mountain senior is looking forward.

“Just meeting a great group of guys. A lot of people say kickers are exiled, but this group of guys I’m with has really taken me in and made me feel welcome,” Lukasak said.

Heading to the University of Pittsburgh, Lukasak plans to major in chemistry with a second major in either biology or neuroscience. He’s also waiting to hear whether or not he’ll be invited to training camp for the Pitt football team.

Well, given the majors he’s pursuing, he would be a good addition to the football team just to help the grade point average.

My ultimate frustration with the Wannsdedt regime occurred when I had a hs kicker out of Lynchburg VA who simply as a sophmore was one of the best in the country and had an interest in Pitt. He was one of my co-workers sons. I called Pitt Athletic Dept., sent an email to Wanny, sent his tape etc. and got no reply….so I called again, only to be told that Pitt (Wanny)was not interested in wasting a scholarship on a kicker.

This kid now has full offers from VA and VA Tech and has accpeted at Virginia Tech. I am sure that he (name is Daryl Simms) will someday beat Pitt with a 55 yd FG and you all can remember this story.

Dan72, so let me get this straight. In the summer of 2010, Simms was just about to enter his junior year in high school …and Wanny had an All-Ohio kicker on the roster who was just entering his sophomore season.

My question to you … did you happen to try and contact Fraud Graham last year to promte this guy?

Don’t think he’ll end up choosing Pitt, (hope he does) but Alex Anzalone is not going to Ohio St.

If Alex is the kid that just sexually assaulted a girl, he isn’t going to wind up at Pitt either. The boy will be behind bars.

It was a facebook thing where he posed with a sexual predator unknowingly. He won’t be going to Pitt given his offers…well, I highly doubt it. Sucks to be tOSU. I guess Urban isn’t infallible after all.

A kicker seems like an afterthought when recruiting, but not having someone who can kick a field goal is such a pain in the ass for both the team and the fans. Please make sure this position is worthily fulfilled.

Same goes for punter Timmeh. Loved watching Andy Lee the past few years. Pitt fan in the Bay

It is called “football” for a reason. Kick offs, punts, field goals, extra points (remember UC) account for a large part of the game and dictate field position.
I hope this part of the game is given its due by the HC.

Remember 76 champions, Carson Long and Larry Switzer. It is difficult to run the table regardless of the schedule and the quality of your offense and defensive players without winning close games because of field goals and field position from punters.

Who can forget the lost national championship in 1980 at FSU when Pitt was beat because of field position by booming punts from the FSU left footed punter who went onto the NFL and had an all-pro career. His name escapes me now but it did not then as I sat in the bleachers of Doke statdium and realized the best team was not going to win because of a punter.

drw–and heavy rains as I recall which greatly inhibited Marino’s passing.

Is anyone else having trouble with the red shirt diaries link on the PG Pitt sports page? I usually use the that link to check what PZ has available then link to this blog, but as of late it doesn’t work. Just wondering.

With Clemson and Florida State heading to the Big 12, Tino will move up two positions.
