Open Thread: Robert Morris-Pitt

House work inside and out most of the day. The 5pm start time for the RMU-Pitt game is just darn inconvenient. Too late to have dinner with the kids afterwards. Too early to have dinner before. Apparently some of my yelling and cursing in the second half of the Backyard Brawl disturbed sleeping children, so I have to at least put on the illusory front that I am not a crazed fan that forgets his family.

So, the game for me is on DVR delay. If you are looking for it on TV you can find it on the Pittsburgh Panther Comcast channel in Western PA (Ch. 188 / 210 I am told). It is also being shown on SNY, ESPN FullCourt package and probably ESPN3.com.

The reports I’m seeing are that Taylor is still having some migraine issues, so he will be out one more game. Lamar Patterson is still suspended for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. That means Khem Birch and J.J. Moore will start at least one more game.

Robert Morris is looking tougher defensively, and wants to snap that 0-29 record. Hey, if Kentucky can finally beat Tennessee in football for the first time in 27 years, nothing should be taken for granted.

BIRCH is better than taylor all ready.next year look out with adams and birch both on team.

Cam Wright looks like a different player out there. Definitely a promising sign.

Comment by PatMac 11.27.11 @ 5:29 pm

I’m impressed with Zanna’s play. Going after rebounds, making put-backs and short little touch shots. Pitt has definitely come alive since the Long Beach game.

Comment by Lou 11.27.11 @ 5:33 pm

Pitt game is now on SNY.

Comment by BigGuy 11.27.11 @ 5:35 pm

Birch looks solid in there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he took over the role as starting center.

Comment by PatMac 11.27.11 @ 5:39 pm

Birch should start taylor can back him up.

Double-double for Zanna … RMU wasn’t tne best rebounding team I ever saw but kudos to Talib and Khem. Nasir only had 3 pts.

Comment by wbb 11.27.11 @ 7:36 pm

This time last week I was very concerned about this game against Bobby Mo. A lot has changed in a week, since Khem Birch has been inserted into the lineup after Taylor got hurt. (hate to see a guy lose his spot to injury, but Birch gives you too much defense to sit him now in favor of Sleepy & he has too much offensive upside as well)

First the big blowout 20 point win over Penn at the Palestra and now tonight. The game was pretty much over at halftime as Birch & (surprise) Talib Zanna totally controlled the boards in the 1rst half.

I think around the 5 minute mark PITT was still up by about 20 and they got a little disinterested, also Birch was on the bench for quite awhile which coincided with RMU coming back.

None the less, I’m glad RMU didn’t start pressing until the 3 minute mark, cause that as it always does immediately produced a turnover by Woodall.
Why RMU didn’t press earlier, you’ll have to ask their coach.

Big games from Zanna with 10pts & 15 rebounds, if we get that from him, we’d be in good shape. A huge comeback from Wright with 13 points and some nice moves to the hoop after hardly playing against Penn. Don’t know if that had more to do that these two guys were familiar with RMU’s players due to the Summer League or not. We shall find out.

Still too much shooting from the outside for my liking, as Nas only had 1 shot (which he made), Birch only had 2 shots, but did make several FT’s, would have liked to seen him shoot more after he hit that 15 footer. And Zanna’s points were mainly putbacks. Guards are still not getting the ball inside enough, can’t rely on shooting from the outside, which tailed off at the end, which also allowed RMU to come back.

Overall though, this team had mad a ton of progress in a week. Truth & Virtue

Hail to Pitt !

Great to see Zanna and Wright have their best games. Making good use of being down 2 players.
HTP!

Glad to see improved play from the bigs over the past few games, especially with Taylor out. From what I understand, Birch has been starting at center and Zanna has been coming in for Robinson at the 4 versus coming in to play the 5(?) Regardless, I would really consider keeping Birch starting at center (for now) with Taylor coming off the bench. Yeah, he shouldnt lose his starting position to injury, but seems Birch might have supplanted him eventually this year. Remember, Chris Taft as a true freshman took Torre Morris’ job away from him (during Morris’ senior year_, and Blair started from day 1 as a true freshman as well (granted Blair was a once in 20 year player and whether Birch will be that good remains to be seen).

Comment by updave 11.27.11 @ 10:12 pm

Also nice to see Wright have a good game tonight. I kept wondering what Jamie saw in him and kept playing him; hopefully he can build on this performance and keep it rolling (like Birch since his LaSalle game)

So is it Veritas & Rectum or is it Veritas & Sanctimonia.

Birch had 11 reb 6 blk and 8 pts a star is born.

Count me as a passenger on the Khem Birch bandwagon.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.28.11 @ 12:15 am

according to the PG, Gibss is 22 for 66 from the field so far … that has to improve by BE time; hopefully, it will improve by Wed night

Comment by wbb 11.28.11 @ 7:02 am

Gibbs is playing awful on both ends. I like his game, but hate when he tries to do too much. I am very disappointed in Ashton’s defense. It is simply unacceptable. He doesn’t even try. Woodall has been disappointing on the defensive end as well. Both need to pick it up.

John Johnson, JJ Moore, and Cam Wright really get after it on the perimeter. All three are susceptible to backdoor cuts and getting lost defending a well run motion offense, as most young players are, but they are aggressive on the perimeter. Gibbs and Woodall just let their man do whatever he wants. They don’t pester him at all. It is frustrating and unacceptable.

Birch is much, much better than Dante Taylor. I don’t feel bad for Taylor. The freshman is better. Coach Dixon needs to play his best players. Khem Birch is certainly one of the top-5 players on this team. Dante Taylor is not.

Comment by omar 11.28.11 @ 10:05 am

I continue to be concerned about this team defensively. I’d wonder if there was some addition by subtraction on that end with Taylor out, but Zanna played a lot of minutes. Still, yielding 71 points at home to RMU is nothing to brag about, even if RMU is a quality opponent despite our lopsided history. Pitt lacks a lock down defender in the starting lineup (last year they had 3). I foresee a lot of zone. . . at least I hope so. The real question is how much will Birch’s shot blocking offset his inability to establish any position on the blocks on either end?

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 11.28.11 @ 10:12 am

Thank God that football is over with! Yes, I know they have a game with Syracuse coming up. But this was such a terribly dissapointing football season, that I’m even more ready for Pitt basketball than ever. I like what I see from Khem Birch and this last game from Talib Zanna was encouraging. Hopefully over the next few weeks they will be able to iron out all the defensive problems. Ultimately I think Aston Gibbs and Travon Woodal will be fine.

Comment by Justinian 11.28.11 @ 10:17 am

Birch is so athletic that he can make up for his lack of strength. He has very long arms and great hands. He has already been a better rebounder than Pitt’s other option at the 5. His shot-blocking and quickness make him a better defender as well. With the porous perimeter defense from Gibbs and Woodall, Pitt needs a shot-blocker like Birch. Taylor is not an eraser. Birch is. Pitt is a better defensive team with Birch.

71 points is misleading as well. Pitt was up 20+ with 5-6 minutes left. Bobby Mo scored a bunch of points in garbage time.

Comment by omar 11.28.11 @ 10:23 am

Looked like all the pieces of the puzzle fit last night.

Comment by alcofan 11.28.11 @ 10:29 am

Birch may well be better and Patterson wasn’t missed last night but come league time, we will need both Taylor and Patterson. As well as Birch and Zanna played the last 2 games, the frontlines for Penn and RMU are not indicative of what they’ll see come January. The next two games will be much better tests.

Comment by wbb 11.28.11 @ 10:43 am

wbb:

I agree with you to a certain extent. However, Dante Taylor was never able to dominate even weak opponents like Birch did the past two games. Taylor will contribute, however I do not believe that he deserves the majority of the minutes. Honestly, I do not believe Taylor deserves to start.

Patterson will be a valuable player. He can play the 2,3, or 4 offensively. Unfortunately, he is not a talented defensive player. Defense is where this team needs the most help. Patterson and Taylor do not really add a whole lot on that end.

I do not think it is a coincidence that Pitt played its best two defensive games without Taylor or Patterson. Hopefully they can pick up their games on the defensive end.

Comment by omar 11.28.11 @ 10:53 am

Got to watch this game on SNY. Imagine that…in Texas. Love Birch.

Comment by TX Panther 11.28.11 @ 11:14 am

great to see the bench contribute. At almost every position, the bench guys are pushing the starters and Dixon will have to make some hard decisions about playing time. Loved how active Birch (and to lesser extent Zanna) was under the basket. Taylor could learn a thing or two. Its the difference.

Lots are commenting on Birch supplanting Taylor. But I also see there being less room for Nas if Birch and Zanna continue to improve. Dont get me wrong I’m a huge NAs fan, but he has limitations.

There’s even some questions at the guard positions now.

Gibbs is definitely one of our best guards but so far this year his shooting percentage is the lowest of all of our guards. He’s not terrible at defense but not very good. And he’s not gotten a handle on how/when to distribute it seems. I don’t have the stats to back it up, but he just seems like a much less efficient player.

In the long run, I’m thinking he will return to form and sync better with his team mates. Its too early still, but his minutes may decrease a little if you have someone like Wright or Johnson bringing more of an all-round game to the table, which is quite possible. Just sayin.

Comment by PantherP 11.28.11 @ 11:33 am

Omar, you make some very good points and I can certainly see where Birch will evetually get more minutes than Taylor. But I’m just saying that we can use all the bodies that we have for the future. I still think Taylor can be an offensive asset who should be fed the ball in the postas opposed to gibbs dribbling aimlessly on the perimeter.

and while Patterson may not be the best defensively, he still may be better on defense than JJ
