Iowa Decides to Honor Pitt with Gold

Apparently Iowa has this thing for football called “Color Games.” Given the color scheme of Iowa, I thought it might be some sort of bizarro alternate color unis or something else.

No. It’s just games that they announce that the fans should all wear one of the two colors. One game in black, one game in gold and one where the fans wear black or gold depending on the section they are sitting.

Iowa has announced which games are color games. The Pitt-Iowa meeting on September 17 is one of them. In a very nice way they honor and show respect to Pitt by making that “color game” the one a Pitt color.

Be Bold, Wear Gold

Iowa vs. Pittsburgh (Sept. 17)

The Hawkeyes will entertain the Pitt Panthers of the Big East Conference in their second home game of the 2011 season. The game will also be Iowa’s second non-conference game against a Bowl Championship Series team.

You just never can underestimate that mid-western friendliness. That’s the way to make a visiting team feel welcome.

For all of you complainers of noon starts at Heinz, you will note the 11 am kick-off … (something Iowa, Wisconsin and many B12 teams face more times that you think .. yet they show up in droves.)

11 am kick for the first 3 games here in Auburn…

I’ll be hitting this up. Guess I’ll make sure I’m wearing my blue jersey for this one!

This game, I’ve read elsewhere, has been called the “forgotten” game on Pitt’s schedule. I don’t understand that concept at all. IMO, this game is a key game for the Panthers. As I’ve always believed college football is a game greatly influenced by the “Big Mo”. With all of the changes that this team is going through, early success is essential to build confidence in Graham’s schemes and philosophy. This Iowa game is just as big as last season’s Utah opener to get that momentuem rolling in Pitt’s favor. It will be the national coming out party for the Todd Graham way of doing things at Pitt and it is against our 1st quality opponent of the season. Add to that the following week we get Notre Dame at home and holy sh*t, this turns out to look like a pretty important one for Pitt to put into the win column. I’m really looking forward to this season under Graham. I hope he can pull off some magic. This game, if won by the Panthers, will be the first rabbit he pulls out of his hat, since the Panthers are already odds on underdogs against the Hawkeyes. Like I always say, “that’s why they play the games”, we’ll see.

Dr. Tom, agreed, don’t know who these people are. I consider it one of the biggest games of the year, along with Utah and ND.

Just like last year, Utah, Miami and ND.

You can win and lose some conference games, you can whip up on some Div 1-aa teams, no one notices.

These three games are the ones the general college football fan across the nation will pay attention too. All too often we’ve crapped ourselves lately on national tv against the other BCS conferences and top teams from the next level conferences i.e. Utah.

Hoping for the fog to be lifted off Pitt football!!! I have an optimistic feeling, and will give Coach Graham several years to get his system and players in place, but, I have a good feeling.

In the future, it will be the same, if you want some respect, you have to beat some teams from the other BCS conferences. Hail to Pitt!!!

Comment by Dan 07.26.11 @ 10:17 am

I’m optimistic at this time, also–but will be less so–if there isn’t a certain level of immediate success (IMO, the minimum is 7-5 regular season + bowl win; or, 8-4 + BCS bowl loss, for an 8-5 final result). I don’t think Graham will be able to succeed long term (defined as doing better than Harris and Wannstadt)if he starts out 7-6 or worse in 2011. IMO, such a result would put Pitt onto the Rich Rod at Michigan path.

Comment by pitt1972 07.26.11 @ 10:42 am

Agreed Pitt1972, I don’t think 7 or 8 wins is unreasonable. Even though Buffalo is not as bad as the name sounds, should be no excuse for losing to Buffalo or Maine. That’s two.

At Iowa will be tough, but, you’d hope we could pick off either Notre Dame or Utah, both at home. Would like to win one or even two of those three.

So, even saying just one. That’s 3 wins.

Then, you have 7 games in the Big East, don’t think it’s expecting too much to go at least 4-3 in the Big East if not better. There are seven wins being conservative. Not unreasonable.

Myself, I won’t even half to look at wins and losses. Walt and Dave had this, what I call, “the fog of Pitt” with them.

Looking perplexed as to what to do, what to call. Timeouts called in the opening series of offensive plays????? Kicking field goals on third down??? etc. etc.

So, what I’ll be looking at the most, is there a general, in charge of what’s going on, and moving the program in the right direction without the mass confusion.

Caveat, his system is new, and will be difficult to learn, so, you have to give him some time, and time to recruit his players. That is only fair and I think we all know that.

But, believe it or not by mid-October, I think we’ll have a sense of weather the “fog” has been lifted or not. Won’t necessarily be W’s and L’s!!

Some others may call my “fog” gauge by other names, the “WTF” gauge, the “Are you kidding me?” gauge, the “I can’t believe this sh#t” gauge, the “at least the beer is cold back at the tailgate” guage!!!

I do expect some helter skelter and keystone cops routines, with his system, I’m not a tyrant, but, 5 or 6 games in, regardless of W’s and L’s, I think we’ll know if we got a keeper!!

Comment by Dan 07.26.11 @ 12:30 pm

Before anyone jumps on me, no, I’m not mystical, any coach needs time, and some can suprise you with good years after a bad start, or bad years after you think you have God’s gift.

I’m just talking about a general feeling, and most of us will have a sense of it by mid season.

Comment by Dan 07.26.11 @ 12:41 pm

wbb…the only thing I would complain about more than a noon start is an 11:00 AM start!…Its no so much the noon start as it is the number of games we have had recently with noon starts, or, the noon start for the “big” game….Pitt1972, I agree 100% that we should be no worse than 7 – 5. In my opinion, anything less constitutes a failure for the new coaching staff.

Comment by HbgFrank 07.26.11 @ 12:42 pm

There will be 1 game where I can’t believe we won. There will be 1 game where I can’t believe we lost. There will be 4 games where we whooped their ass and it felt good. There will be 2 games where we got lucky and I have to take my heart meds. There will be 2 games where we got beat by the better team. That’s a 9 win/3 loss season and another trip to some bowl in Carolina.

Comment by TX Panther 07.26.11 @ 1:20 pm

@Dan, I like the names for your gauges, especially the WTF gauge!! I agree, Wanny sometimes seemed clueless at just the time that decisive action was required to win a game that was up for grabs. More often than not he “played scared” and appeared to have an attitude of playing not to loss. You’ll rarely play above your actual potential when those attributes contribute to your mindset. As I mentioned in a previous post, momentuem and enthusiasm can become infectious when you’re dealing with a bunch of 18 to 22 year olds. If we steal a win out of Iowa it could be just the sort of confidence injection into this program to make a 9-3 season happen as TX Panther predicts. This Iowa game seems like the “got lucky and pulled one out” win games to me. It would sure be a great way to show up to the home game against ND if we are 3-0 at that point. We’ll see, but I’m pretty sure that Graham is going to provide a much more exciting brand of Pitt Football than we have become accustomed to accepting over recent years. Hoping for the best, Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 07.26.11 @ 1:57 pm

I suggest that ‘playing scared’ is more or less playing like a normal NFL coach. We Steelers fans have seen this for years with Cowher (and his mentor and Pitt alum, Marty S) … and it seemed to work well until playoff time.

The college game seems much different these days (although Saban and Tressel are conservatives who just happened to have had overwhelming talent.)

The one caveat I have is that defense is still very important as evidenced by the the fact the dominant conference of late is the SEC which has shown great defenses over the last decade. You may recall the B12 of a few years ago that was scoring ridiculous numbers in conference but got pretty well dominated in the bowl games.

Comment by wbb 07.26.11 @ 2:13 pm

@Tx, i’d take 9-3 and a Carolina Bowl for first season!!!

@wbb, good call, those offenses were fantastic, they scored 55 points a game, only problem, they gave up 56!!!!

@Dr. Tom , ha ha, ya, we all have a gauge!! My wifes is the “huh” gauge, and she adds a quizzical look to go with it!!

Comment by Dan 07.26.11 @ 4:39 pm

Actually Tx, no Carolina, enough of those. Plus, I visit my sister in Northern S.Carolina 5 or 6 times a year. Many of those long weekends, which equals, long weekend drives!! Enough of the Carolinas for awhile!!

Comment by Dan 07.26.11 @ 4:42 pm

Lol. I love that we are poo-pooing bowl games in the Carolinas. 12 years ago, I was wishing for the Toilet Bowl after going to one bowl the previous 10 years. #PittFans

Comment by cnorwoodaz 07.26.11 @ 5:31 pm

@cnorwoodaz, truer words have not been spoken. LOL!!!

All kidding aside, I don’t think it’s poo-pooing from myself and others. Love the Carolinas, loved their stadium and the bars the night before. Great times.

Thinks it’s more going to the same place, and frankly, with me, as childish as this is going to sound, couldn’t stand the name. Meineke Car Care Bowl. Made me cringe.

Hey, I’ll go to Charlotte anytime for some Scotch and college football. I’m used to the drive, my sister lives 1/2 hour further south in Rock Hill, SC, can do it in my sleep!
