More than a little hype for this one. Promoted by ESPN channels all weekend. No matter what they were broadcasting. An ad for Cuse-Pitt was going to show up somewhere at sometime.

Fun fact. Pitt is a Big East, Big Monday team in three of the next four weeks. Rest of the Big East might be a little tired of that.

7:30 pm with the tolerable Dan Shulman and the excruciating Dick Vitale on ESPN. Make sure you have the appropriate adult beverage to numb the aching in the ears.

Hopefully everyone knows the drill. It’s a moderated chat to limit repetitive comments, too much idiocy, some sense of order and trolls.

[UPDATE (7:27)
: Lots of football recruits in the Pete according to lots of Tweets. Along with alum like Larry Fitzgerald.]

The liveblog is below or you can break it out from the site by Clicking Here.

Chas, I’ve mentioned before, no more “lack of respect” card they used to play years ago. The past few years, attention galore, and I’ve mentioned that I have family members (not fans) in different parts of the country always crying about “why is Pitt always on”, and everything is “Pitt this, or Pitt that”!!! It’s a good thing!!!!!!!!!! Go Panthers!!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 01.17.11 @ 5:39 pm

Chas, any word on the refs? Higgins?

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.17.11 @ 5:50 pm

Damn. Was hoping for Raffy tonight instead of Dickie V.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.17.11 @ 6:27 pm

I’ll have to listen to an out of sync Hillgrove. How can they think (ESPN) Vitale is a draw. I would never watch any game other than Pitt if he is broadcasting. Is it just me?

Pittsburgh is on a heckuva streak, Penquins,Steelers,Pitt on Saturday, Patriots go down on Sunday. Let’s keep it going.

Go Pitt.

It means very little, but how is Ohio State No. 1? The four teams behind OSU all deserve the spot more… Did the pollsters even look at the Buckeyes schedule? They almost lost to Penn State for @&*$@ sake!

Comment by Brian 01.17.11 @ 6:55 pm

Just a little time left in the Mizz-KSU game…Pitt game now on at 7:40, on ESPN3 if the Missouri game doesn’t finish soon.

Comment by Lou 01.17.11 @ 7:31 pm

Brian, I find it very difficult to believe OSU is still number one, based on their schedule alone. Plus, that near-miss at home, against PSU should’ve sent some signals to the pollsters.

Comment by Lou 01.17.11 @ 7:33 pm

LOL@ the start of this game. Pitt goes up 19-0 to start and now Syracuse looks like they’re going to go even with a 19-0 run of there own.

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.17.11 @ 8:06 pm

Methinks Dick V. and Boeheim shared a hotel room last night based on the commentating so far…

Comment by Bobby 01.17.11 @ 8:38 pm

Dixon breaks his own team’s momentum by substituting too early. It’s the same scenario every game; we get off to a great start then Dixon goes to the bench too soon and cools off his starters. He gets away with it with subpar teams and hopefully he gets away with it tonight, but contrary to popular belief, this crazy substituting will kill us in the end.

Comment by ltl 01.17.11 @ 8:41 pm

I hate when Dick Vitale goes Pitt games. If he never does another one, it will be too soon. Bad enough that he has his napking and kneepads on for Boeheim, but he’s picking the Jets to win the Superbowl.

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.17.11 @ 8:56 pm

Waited to the end of this game to comment…

First of all, good, not great game for Pitt. Very sloppy at times. Two things I cannot for the life of me understand:
1. Why does Pitt not recognize and react better to the full court press and WHY do they inbound the ball to the short corner so often?
2. What happens to Gilbert Brown every once in a while in the game?? He makes ridiculously stupid plays with the ball. His three late turnovers could really have cost Pitt.

That’s all here…Glad we won. Had the Cuse been on their game, it would have been trouble tonight. Should win our next five.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dan 72 01.17.11 @ 9:51 pm

Great win!!! Syracuse is a really good team. Alot of talent. Alot of good things shown tonight. Nas is the glue to this team! One downside again: handling the press. Coach Dixon may want to think about getting a new inbounder. I dont know if they just panic or what, but you cannot throw the first pass to the short side corner against a man press. The do it all the time!! Soon as the guy catches it, he’s trapped. Three times tonight, three turnovers. Other than that, thought they played great against a real tough opponent.

Comment by Z-Boy 01.17.11 @ 9:55 pm

In some ways, having the ‘Cuse come back lends a little more credibility to Pitt’s win. No one can say, “the Orange just had a bad night…they really haven’t had a true road game…they missed their leading scorer, etc.”

Now, they can say the the “two top teams in the tough Big East played, and Pitt dominated when it counted.”

Comment by Lou 01.17.11 @ 10:05 pm

It was over at the 5 minute mark.

Comment by steve 01.17.11 @ 10:10 pm

While after that first burst the rest of the game felt like a let down, still I’ve NEVER seen anything from Pitt like that first eight minute run — it was sensory overload. It’s very promising sign how athletic we can be, despite the average play later. It felt weird, like sort of a let down and there’s lots to pick on, but at the end of the day we just beat the #3 team in the country by 10.

Comment by PantherP 01.17.11 @ 10:25 pm

Sorry Dan for repeating what you said. You must of been posting while I was typing. I see it the same way you do. My remote goes flyng every time they throw that first pass! Would also love to see them push the ball a little more. Either against a press or after a made/missed shot. I think our players are smart enough to push the ball up the floor and then determine if anything is there or not. I think we are athletic enough that we are missing out on some good scoring opportunities by not running. Id rather see a turnover trying to get to the basket being aggressive than being timid standing in the backcourt looking for a teammate.

Comment by Z-Boy 01.17.11 @ 10:37 pm

Good to see how we evolved during the game. For ex:
– using Gil to drive and dish/shoot instead of Nas at the top of the key;
– Gary/Taylor learning to not give up any ground on the blocks;
– attacking later in the game when slowing down wasn’t working.

Gotta say, despite their dropped rebounds and late TOs, respectively, gotta give props to Gary and Brown today (everyone is gonna give Nas his deserved ones, Omar I’m sure will cover Wanny’s rock solid play). Also, great to see Taylor playin well too. He just needs to learn how to creat some space when we goes up for those dump ins.
Great win. I wanna see Gil’s block on replay a thousand times.

Comment by PantherP 01.17.11 @ 10:51 pm

Wanamaker is the best player and it’s not even close. Not sure what they would do without him.

Brown is seemingly limiting his bad moments and I like his aggressiveness in getting the ball to the middle and pulling up for a 8-footer.

Robinson is indispensable even when he doesn’t score, and damn if McGhee doesn’t give 100% every play.

Excellent win tonight over a very good team.

Comment by Antiguafor200Alex 01.17.11 @ 10:57 pm

Coach Graham put on a zoo shirt and went in to the zoo at bb game with the rest of the zoo cool.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.17.11 @ 11:15 pm

What exactly does Pitt need to do to have a great win? Beat the undefeated number 3 team in the nation by 20 points? I guess Pitt has nothing to do with the Cuse not being on their game? Some people will never be happy.

How many turnovers were due to the full court press one maybe two? The full court press creates turnovers for all teams. And Gil Brown also made some great plays in the game too.

Comment by XBlackMagicX 01.17.11 @ 11:27 pm

Agree. Pitt is no worse than anyone else at the press and they usually break it fine, sometimes with an easy basket. On the inbounds they try to go to the middle, but if they can’t, they throw to the corner, then do a sort of hook and ladder move with the inbounder or the recipient throws a skip pass to the other side of the zone. Full court press depends on trapping and doubling up and if you can get that double close to the baseline and get rid of it quickly, it’s easy to diffuse it. That’s what they usually do.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.17.11 @ 11:44 pm

Itl, those generous substitutions are for the benefit of later games and later seasons. Those substitutions will pay huge dividends next year when Zanna, Patterson, Woodall, and Taylor will potentially be depended upon to be starters rather than role players.

Sure, liberal substitutions may potentially cost us a game at some point. But how many games have we won this year because Taylor and Woodall played important minutes last year? Brad the year before. There is a reason Pitt almost always seems like the most experienced team in every game, every year. Dixon goes deep into his bench and often because he’s not just coaching a game, he’s coaching a program.

Great win, they were missing their best player. They will be tougher at tourney time. For now enjoy the win.

Comment by gc 01.18.11 @ 6:56 am

By the way, even Vitale had to pay attention to the game, and was noticably less Vitale like. I still think he should retire.

Comment by gc 01.18.11 @ 6:59 am

Vitale is an idiot, but he did give the Pitt team some nice props toward the end of the game. It took him that long to finally muster up the comments.

Also heard excellent things from Boeheim in the post game presser. Said that this may be the best Pitt team he’s ever seen. I hate Boeheim on the court (he was actually pretty tame yesterday), but he seems like a good guy otherwise.

And what the hell happened with Jamie getting T’d up in that game? Anyone see what happened? There were a couple of officials that I don’t usually see doing Pitt games.

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.18.11 @ 8:33 am

Despite lapses here and there, that was some impressive play. After that terrible start for the ‘Cuse, they appeared to shoot very well. I don’t think they missed Joseph all that much. Wonder what their shooting % was from the point of 19-0 on?

I would literally pay $100 to see Gil Brown, just one time when he drives into the paint, go up strong and try to elevate over a defender. Last night he pulled up and hit a few nice short jumpers in the paint, but several other times you could tell that he was looking for the pass first, even before a defender came to him. A little more unbridled aggression from Gil and he would be an entirely different player.

All that said, though, that block was SICK! I need to find a still of that and use it for my screen saver!

Comment by Carmen 01.18.11 @ 8:56 am

I think some of you guys are being a little tough on Dickie V. He really couldn’t have been more complimentary of our guys, of Coach Dixon, of the crowd and atmosphere. Put it this way: I don’t think he mentioned Duke or Coach K more than maybe once.

In my eyes, all credit for this one goes to Coach Dixon. He could not have possibly prepared the team any better for what they were about to see. Starting with Nas, every guy was in the perfect position and made the right decision in attacking that zone. That’s coaching. And although the lead quickly disappeared, if a few jumpers fall in that stretch the lead stays comfortable.

As for the trouble with the press, it happens, especially when a team abruptly goes from a half-court matchup zone to full-court pressure. I’m confident they’ll take care of it though. After the Providence game with all the turnovers, taking care of the ball was obviously stressed and they did a tremendous job of that against Marquette and GU. They didn’t rebound as well as usual against Marquette, then dominated the boards against GU and Syracuse. This team is really intelligent, really hard-working, and really well-coached. They’re getting better and better, and the bugs will be worked out. Hail to Pitt!

Have to agree with all of the positives here. It was a solid win, and the Panthers were in control throughout the game. I don’t know how much of a difference Joseph would have made, because Fair pretty much picked up his minutes, scoring and rebounding. I think Pitt wins it even if he’d played.

The opening run was awesome and drew the same praise of “best team I’ve seen” from Dickie V as it did from Coach Bobby last week. And, it was great to hear Knight talking about Pitt at the beginning of the KU/Baylor game.

IMO, the Syracuse run was because Pitt relaxed its defensive pressure allowing ‘Cuse to start hitting shots and setting up their D on our end. But as others mentioned, Jamie adjusted and we started getting those open looks inside again in the second half.

Not too worried about the press issues. Agree with SilverPanther that Jamie is playing it correctly scheme-wise. My only suggestion would be to let someone else – McGhee, Nas? – make the entry pass to get Gil into the receiving mix. That might make it easier to get the ball to the middle. Just a thought.

Big win against a good team. As 85 said, they are getting better and better as a team. Unless there’s a key injury or one of those unexplainable mid-season slumps, a #1 seed is clearly in their future.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 01.18.11 @ 9:45 am

I’m missing a little bit on Dicky V.. Ya, he’s a blowhard for Boeheim and Coach K, but, I’ve only heard him say great things about Pitt and The Pete! If he wasn’t sincere, his energy would be too much, but, I think the guy is a sincere, good guy, who does a lot of charity work!! Ya, his voice is grating, but every time I hear him, he’s always talking about good things with Pitt. Maybe I’ve missed some shots he’s taken at them. He even said the ACC was having a down year last night, and that they aren’t even one of the top three conferences this year.

Comment by Dan 01.18.11 @ 10:34 am

Yes, TampaT, Knight did go on about Pitt having the best guards in the country, especially at pulling back and running the offense!!

Comment by Dan 01.18.11 @ 10:41 am

Whodathunk that we’d be ranked #1 nationally in offensive efficiency given past emphasis on defense?

Just shows how Jamie is able to change style of play to suit the personnel.

We are truly blessed with a greaty coach.
