Odd that Pitt never got around to putting a press release out on the hiring of Bernard Clark as LB coach. I know it isn’t hiring a new coordinator, but it seems standard to put something out even when a position coach is hired. Guess too distracted by signing day, hall of fame and the new schedule — non-con and Big East.

Well his hometown paper in Tampa puts out a story on Clark’s hiring by Pitt. He seems, er, energetic.

“Every now and then, I’ll put on the helmet and the shoulder pads, not to show my players that I’m better than them, but to show how I want things done,” said Clark, the well-traveled coaching veteran, one of the all-time greats at Leto High and the University of Miami. “You can’t ever say I lacked for enthusiasm.”

Now Clark is taking his passion to the University of Pittsburgh, who hired him this week as linebackers coach. Clark will work for Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt, who was his defensive coordinator at Miami in the late 1980s.

“I can’t wait to get started,” said Clark, replacing Joe Tumpkin, who became defensive coordinator at Central Michigan University. “I’ve been to a lot of places the last few years, all over the place, really. I’m excited that it has led to this.

“You won’t find many places with the rich tradition of a place like Pittsburgh. We’ve really got something special to sell. They won 10 games last season and we’re very close to winning the Big East championship (losing in the final seconds against Cincinnati). I’m glad to be part of it.”

Clark was a big part of the famed Miami Hurricane teams of the late 80s, and was apparently featured in the recent ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, “The U.” Now required viewing for the Pitt linebackers to get a sense of their new coach. I have heard excellent things about the documentary. It is on my DVR, but I haven’t had time to sit down and watch.

Clark — obviously — expects to be recruiting in Florida.

A coupleeftovers from last week (and I still have  a few more after this). Go figure, trust is a big deal in recruiting (please stifle your snickers). Pitt commit T.J. Clemmings is quoted talking about how the first impression mattered most to him — good thing Pitt was one of his first visits.

Pitt secondary coach and NJ recruiter Jeff Hafley gets nice love in the piece as it is noted that he has brought 8 players from NJ to Pitt between this year and last.

In the four seasons before that, Pittsburgh had just three commits from New Jersey.

The 30-year-old Hafley started from humble coaching beginnings at the college level, first at Albany before accepting a job as the graduate assistant on Dave Wannestedt’s staff in 2006. He slept on an inflatable mattress for two years in the coaches’ office on campus, dedicating himself to earning his spot.

His ability to connect with recruits almost immediately — especially those from North Jersey — has served Pittsburgh tremendously well.

“From the first time I met Jeff, I just knew he was a genuine guy, and that’s what I was hoping for,” Clemmings said. “What Coach Hafley didn’t do was bash other schools.

“He talked about Pittsburgh and nobody else, and that meant something to me. He really sold me on the reality.”

He was a grad assistant. He was sleeping on an air mattress in the office because he was homeless.

Hafley got a bit more attention again in a generic piece on finding overlooked diamonds-in-the-rough at Pitt, WVU and PSU.

“They won 10 games last season and we’re very close to winning the Big East championship (losing in the final seconds against Cincinnati). I’m glad to be part of it.”

Welcome to our world of ‘almost’. Nice to see he’s embracing the possibility of heartache with open arms.

Sorry…still bitter about that Cinci game. Clark’ll be a good addition to the fam.

So, was the lack of a coach with Florida ties the reason we didn’t go into the Sunshine State the past two years as often as we did before that?

We’re still getting good players from PA and OH, and now we’ve gotten some of the best out of NJ and VA, if we can throw FL into the mix that’d be a very good thing.

It is a challenge to recruit in Florida. Always was, but now more so. Not only is super-recuiting U.of F doing its thing, but the Seminoles are reviving. Add to the mix South Florida, Florida, Central Florida and even Florida Atlantic and one can understand the competition is fierce. I pastored a church in the Sunshine State from ’85 to ’96. When I first went there I was unimpressed with the quality of their highschool athletes. As time passed the quality improved vastly. Whoever recrits there today has to have charisma, connections and a good product to sell. Let’s hope whoever recruits there for the Panthers has all three and I believe Pitt’s coaches do. Not that I’m biased. George, Class of ’53

FL is always at or near the top of top high schoolFB recruits, and I only see it as a positive to have a presence there. We’ve done very well since Antonia Bryant in scooping up the leftovers from UF, FSU and Miami .. thus despite our inroads into NJ, DC and Ohio, a few from the Sunshine St should be a big plus.

It seems that the major duty of the position coach is as much recruiting as it is teaching .. especially the young, energetic ones. Hopefully, the new WR coach (Norv’s boy) will do similar work as Hafley is doing.

off topic but interesting post on Smizik’s P-G blog just posted … it appears that the new FM sports talk radio in Pittsburgh, the Fan 93.7, which debuts next week will likely become the flagship for Pitt sports. Smizik explains in sitching from Clear Channel to the Fan will mean more local coverage of Pitt since the Fan will be either 16 or 24 hrs daily local programming. Note that the current flagships 94.5 FM is an oldies station, and Fox970 AM has only two regular local shows (Bendel and Linelli.)

Comment by wbb 02.11.10 @ 3:26 pm

wbb – I caught Smizik’s post as well, and I think the switch is generally a good thing for us Pitt fans, particularly as it relates to basketball. Dedicated Pitt basketball coverage on radio is limited to the games, a 30 minute pre-game show, and the post-game/call-in show. I would think that an all-sports format, with Pitt as the “anchor” tenant, would provide much more opportunities for coverage.

Two questions that immediately come to mind:

1. Will there be an AM radio sister station? KDKA-AM would provide a nice signal boost to the broadcasts, but so far, there has been no indication that the AM station will have a direct relationship with the FM station. It would be kind of cool to be able to pick up Pitt night games over the air in far away places (similar to Pirates games in years gone by).

2. What talent will cover Pitt? I assume that Hillgrove, Groat and probably Fralic would be safe for game broadcasts, but what about things like the post-game? I’ve actually grown to like Linelli after the hoops games (he doesn’t get flustered by even the most stupid comments), but as Smizik points out, he is not likely to switch since he has a morning show on 970 now.

Coach Hafley is a fine young man. He spoke at our annual golf event last summer and predicted a win at Rutgers and took well my gentle harrassing about young Jarred Holley being so low on the depth chart.

Pantherman, just to show you how old and set in my way I can be, the first thing I thought of when you listed KDKA AM as a sister station, is that they would probably give the Pirates priority in the event of conflicts. The fact is that in AD Pedersen’s 1st run at Pitt, he was thrilled that KDKA showed interest in carrying Pitt games, but did not reward the AM giant because it would give preference to the Pirates over Pitt FB games on fall Saturdays … of course, this is no longer an issue. I agree that it would be a big plus if KDKA 1020 would buy in.

wbb – funny thing, I still catch myself tuning to 1020 am for Pirates games. It was just ingrained in me for so many years. I have many memories of picking up the signal in far away places while traveling (Little Rock, Des Moines, coastal Maine, etc.).

Smizik also mentioned that the Pirates might be interested in moving to 93.7 when their contract is up after 2011 (they have similar concerns as Pitt in regards to pre- and post-game coverage, particularly since 104.7 dropped Ellis Cannon). This of course could reintroduce the conflict that you mention; hopefully, Pitt jumping on board early gives the Panthers a competitive advantage that they did not enjoy several years ago.

I know this isn’t the right feed, and I know we have to wait and see, but, now, the preliminary talk of Texas to the Big 10, (I don’t think it will happen) is giving me a sickening feeling that Pitt is going to be left holding the ball for an extremely watered down Big East. The football alignment is so bad now, absolutely no geographical feel, I just have a bad feeling, maybe Syracuse or Rutgers to the Big 10 and in a couple years I have tickets to Central Florida, Temple, Memphis and East Carolina. I’m sorry, I just had to type something…I wonder if Mr. Wonderful is being pro-active or just sitting back with that smug smile??

Comment by Dan 02.11.10 @ 5:56 pm

Dan, I personally feel that UConn and Pitt may be considered more than Syracuse or Rutgers. Doubt that neither of the ltter two would have a big football impact on NYC while UConn bb may.

Texas may be a good fit since it would provide a new, large TV market as well as real good FB recruiting area. But not sure that the Texan politicians would warm up to a UT move to the B10.

I think its funny that the rumors of Pitt were written of as unfounded and “not worthy of reporting” by most of the media. Yet, the second that there is a “Source with big ten ties” saying there have been talks with Texas, ESPN has it reported on their website, they have podcasts discussing it. I think this coming up makes it sound even more like some preliminary discussions went on with Pitt. Maybe they are in their investigation stage and talking with various schools. I just find it laughable that because it is Texas it is “news” yet when it was Pitt it was a “silly rumor”. Yes the part about the announcement of Pitt joining was BS and unfounded but I can’t help but think there was some truth to “talks” going on. Yet the entire media wrote it off.

UT IS Big XII football. It would never happen.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 02.11.10 @ 7:21 pm

Unless for some currently unforeseen dramatic makeover for the entire sport of college football, Texas to the Big Televen is not going to happen.

Hell, I might as well tell you all, I am the ‘source with Big Ten ties’…..

Comment by JSS 02.11.10 @ 10:03 pm

Cool Hand – Oklahoma and Nebraska tend to disagree with that statement. The Big 12 has more than just Texas as historically excellent football schools.

I’m very wary that Texas would want to leave the Big 12 – that is a very good and solid conference.

I just think there is a ton of rumors floating around about the B10 right now…

Comment by Reed 02.12.10 @ 4:52 am

Hey, sorry to have started the re-alignment talk, but, wow, it is so huge. As for the Texas thing, I agree it won’t happen, but, this story, the people admitted that was a prelim meeting. Could be just two guys from both admins b.s.ing.. I whole though, as I love the blue and gold, as everyone on here that posts does, I just hope we’re in the mix, in the Big 10, ACC??, I don’t know, I just hope we’re part of the “scene” in 2 or 3 years, and not pretending to be excited about what Temple coming back to the Big East brings, or what a big conference matchup with Marshall means for the season. Ok, I have to work, thanks for listening. Good posts back, too. Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Dan 02.12.10 @ 8:53 am

I tend to believe that Big Ten officials are or will be having very preliminary discussions with several schools. I agree with Ontario – I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Pitt officials have already had such a discussion. It doesn’t mean that anything is going to happen, let alone that anything is imminent, but at this point it would surprise me if Nordenberg had not talked at least informally with Big Ten officials.

As for Texas, there are a lot of reasons why a move is not attractive, but it is known that they are not happy with the revenue streams in the Big 12, particularly from television. They may use this interest as leverage to force the Big 12 to address their revenue concerns. If the Big 12 does not or cannot, then their willingness to move may become more apparent.
