Everything Begins Tonight

True, no Pitt football tonight. Not even a Big East team playing (unless you count 1-AA Villanova playing Temple in the Mayor’s Cup). Still, meaningful football starts tonight. No scrimmages. No NFL exhibition games. Real college football, and some good games to boot.

As for Saturday, the Penguins are going to be without a few players. Not sure which ones, but that’s how suspensions at YSU roll.

As if going up against the preseason favorite to win the Big East Conference wasn’t hard enough, Youngstown State will be at an even bigger disadvantage against Pitt after an undisclosed amount of players were suspended for Saturday’s game due to a violation of team rules.

YSU coach Jon Heacock did not divulge the names of the players nor the number.

“It’s a handful of guys,” Heacock said. “It’s a one-week thing, but I always take these things under review. I’m obviously disappointed it has to happen, but we have rules that have to be followed.”

I know I’ll be closely comparing the depth chart to who is on the field.

The Penguins’ head coach has also reassumed his duties as defensive coordinator. Something he hasn’t done since Jim Tressel was still running things in Youngstown.

The game does provide a warm-up in facing a dual threat running/passing QB.

Pitt won’t play another team like Youngstown State this year, but the Panthers may face a quarterback like Brandon Summers again.

The dual-threat senior at Youngstown State – Pitt’s only non-Division I opponent this season – will provide the Panthers a hint of what lies ahead.

“He can throw, and he’s a scrambling threat,” Pitt defensive coordinator Phil Bennett said. “It’s a very good test for us because we are going to see a lot of the things throughout the year.”

Summers and senior Donald Jones, an NFL-caliber wide receiver, will be the focus of Pitt’s heralded defense when YSU visits at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heinz Field for the 2009 opener.

To varying degrees Pitt will face dual threat QBs from Navy, NC State, USF and WVU. Plus there’s alwyas a possibility with Rutgers using Jabu Lovelace (maybe not, but I haven’t had a chance to type in one of the best names in CFB yet this year).

Shariff Harris has been reinstated to the team after his 2-week suspension. He has not transferred. Unlikely he will see any action. No word as to whether he will be changing positions yet.

DC Phil Bennett is trying to reign in the defense’s confidence in light of all the attention and expectations on them.

“We’ve gotten some accolades that are undeserving,” Bennett said. “When we played Oregon State, we were a damn good defense and some of these guys weren’t even on the field. You have to earn respect and, to do that, we’re going to try and be perfectionists and we’re going to coach them hard.

“This is a fun group because we can get there and we know we have a lot of room for improvement. We expect to get better, but it does not happen without hard work.”

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt echoed Bennett’s sentiment and issued a challenge to his defense, saying nothing matters until the games start.

“This time of year, it is all just talk really,” Wannstedt said. “[The media] has to pick top teams, and they have to talk about positions and individuals. But the great thing about this game of football is that you have to go out there and prove yourself, and you are only as good as your last play.”

And very likely we won’t know anything for certain after this week. No matter how it is sliced, this is against a middling 1-AA team. A team that I will mention again has yet to score a TD against 1-A opponents in four games.

Joe Starkey feels like being a downer today.

Bennett’s defense has a chance to be dominant, though a lack of experience at linebacker and a lack of height in the secondary could prove problematic.

Offensively, you never know what you’re getting with freshmen, and Pitt will have two (Dion Lewis, Ray Graham) sharing the tailback duties. The line should be decent. The tight ends and receivers are plenty talented.

Which brings us back to quarterback, where fifth-year senior Bill Stull will start Saturday’s opener against Youngstown State, with redshirt freshman Tino Sunseri as the backup.

If Pitt gets above-average play from that position, look out. Otherwise, I believe we’re looking at 9-4 again.

That would give Pitt back-to-back seasons of nine-or-more wins for the first time since 1981-82, but it would not constitute a return to the glory days.

Wannstedt’s promise would remain unfulfilled.

Not sure what the point of this column is except to point out that obviously Pitt is not where Coach Wannstedt and everyone would love for this team and program to be: a juggernaut akin to the mid-70s into the early-80s.

Frankly, even with the conference the way it is, another 9-4 season (provided one of the wins was a bowl win) would still be a big positive and another step forward.

There just is no way, in my view, for this team to be taking giant leaps as constituted and coached. Frustrating as it frequently is, and as disappointing as it has been at many spots, this is Coach Wannstedt’s team. His construction of them and the way it operates is very much the slow growth. There are plenty of questions about it.

In some ways — building depth, teaching and defense first — this is proper./ In other ways — kids turning pro early, not putting talent on the field and using it best before their eligibility is over, failing to adapt to present  football that encourages offense and some imagination — it has been poorly thought out.

Starting this weekend, we all get to start finding out how reality meets our expectations and perceptions once more.

Chas, I think you hit the nail on the head and this says it all;

“In some ways — building depth, teaching and defense first — this is proper./ In other ways — kids turning pro early, not putting talent on the field and using it best before their eligibility is over, failing to adapt to present football that encourages offense and some imagination — it has been poorly thought out.”

I agree the better college coaches improvise and adapt and has Wanny learned or grasped this simple lesson?

Maybe to a point he has, I have to admit since Bennett took over, the defense has really improved; we have to wait and see how the new OC pans out.

Everyone on earth sees that the weakest link is the QB, it will be a just a matter of how Stull performs on gameday. If he performs he should play, if he falls on his face, well, hopefully we will see someone else getting a shot.

Season ticket sales are up and if a poor product is placed on the field people will not attend games and if Pitt wins, people will attend the games and support the program.

Face it, Wanny is making about 1 million per year and college football is big business.

Does anybody know if Saturday’s game is on any internet radio stations? If so, please post.
Thanks-

Panthers All-Access may be forcing the game off the net due to their monopoly but here is a link to the live feeds from 3WS and Fox Sports 970:

Give it a try and see if they will work on game day.

Will there be a live-blog/chat type thing Saturday?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.03.09 @ 7:14 pm

Not scheduled for ESPN 360 although WVU, Syracuse, UConn, S.Fla and LVille all will be.

Comment by MelbaPlace 09.03.09 @ 7:14 pm

Watching NC St vs. SC….if Pitt’s defense allows more than 10 points to NC St, they should hang themselves. Very very winnable game.

Comment by Hollywood 09.03.09 @ 8:26 pm

This marks the 600th consecutive snoozer game featuring South Carolina in primetime. This might be the first South Carolina game where they have a chance to win….NC State looks like total garbage.

Comment by JoeyD 09.03.09 @ 9:35 pm

hope you’re right but I never put much stock in the 1st game of the year … every coach will tell you that the biggest improvement is made from the 1st week to the 2nd.

Comment by w Bill 09.03.09 @ 11:03 pm

Thoroughly unimpressed by NC State- and South Carolina for that matter. That was Sun Bowl-esque.

Comment by Dan35 09.03.09 @ 11:48 pm

Dan35–Game play for both SC and NCSt will likely improve significantly over the next 2-3 weeks. College teams are rarely ready to play well in week one and usually aren’t ready to use anything close to their full playbook. Camp time is simply too limited and, typically (but not always), too many new less experienced players are being worked into the 2-deep and crisp execution simply isn’t their yet.

That being said, my reaction to last night’s game was that SC played the way we probably should expect to see Pitt play. They have a strong and fast defense and the run is emphasized on offense (their QB’s passing capabilities seemed very similar to Stull’s).

Comment by pitt1972 09.04.09 @ 9:06 am

The second game last night was certainly very low scoring given that two supposedly high powered “modern” and “innovative” offenses were going at it. Boise 19- Oregon 8 in a game expected to be something like 45-42 the way it was promoted by the ESPN guys–especially after the SC v. NCSt game laid an egg for the fans of high scoring games. It was either opening game syndrome or the defenses are finally catching up to the offenses, once again.

Comment by pitt1972 09.04.09 @ 9:15 am

I was just thinking- has anyone seen the new helmets? The new pants have the retro side stripe. What are the odds we see the Panthers come out tomorrow with a script Pitt on the helmet? I know they have said no, but it seems fishy all the helmets have been blank through camp.

Comment by Dan35 09.04.09 @ 9:30 am

They’ll definitely be better in 3 weeks but they didn’t give anyone reason to fear with that performance.

Comment by Dan35 09.04.09 @ 9:37 am

I’ll lay an egg if they come out with the script, won’t happen.

Comment by dugdog 09.04.09 @ 9:37 am

i thought about the same thing with the script pitt on the helmets, but i dont see pitt having 2 versions of the name pitt onthe jerseys, script on the helmet and block onthe jersey…

i think that would be awsome though.

Comment by mike 09.04.09 @ 10:07 am

I’m in a script debating mood this morning…

Why not come out with the script on the helmet in current colors? Florida does it. They have a totally modern looking logo and design for everything BUT their footbal helmet. The FLORIDA GATORS moniker is done ala Louisville Block (which I don’t like) for all sports; including football (except for their helmets)…

What a way to energize the fan base….put the F’in script on the helment Slippery Steve!

Comment by Pauly P 09.04.09 @ 10:17 am

Does anyone think this picture may show the elusive script (perhaps in a slightly different form) in it’s natural environment? Hmmmm…

that pic had to be from last yr, the players are wearing the addidas shorts, and this yr everything is nike.

That picture is block, not script. Sadly.

AS much as we all may or may not like Dave, he is going to be given EVERY chance to succeed – the admin and trustees like him too much otherwise. That said, a losing season this year, loss of many season ticket holders, and no clear direction of the program might have him on a tighter leash.

Comment by greg 09.04.09 @ 3:09 pm

Did last night’s NC State – SC game remind you of last years Sun Bowl?

Comment by Dallas Panther 09.04.09 @ 4:30 pm

Greg – I am going to respectfully disagree with you on at least one point. I have been critical of Wannstedt for what I perceive are certain shortcomings, but I do believe the program, as a whole, has clear direction. Wannstedt has built a team that is much bigger, faster, stronger and deeper than when he arrived (with the exception of QB). The team is in a better position to succeed year-to-year, in terms of overall talent, than it has been in some time. The only thing he hasn’t consistently done is win – and if he gets fired, I think it will simply be because it turns out he is not a good enough game coach to succeed on this level. There are a lot of people (myself included) who fear this may be the case, but are hoping that it is not.

Comment by Pantherman13 09.04.09 @ 4:31 pm

Some potpourri, if I may: Thankyou Jason for directing us to that awesome site. If I wasn’t psyched before (and I was) I am now. Furthermore, it was a relief to see how poorly other teams can play. I’m referring to the N.C.State – S, Carolina debacle of last evening. From what I had been reading the Sun Bowl game of LAST YEAR was the Only examplew of a team having having a bad game. And finally, fellow fans, until he retires, Coach Wannstedt is in charge and I will be in his corner. George from Columbus

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 09.04.09 @ 4:36 pm

Agree. I lived through the great script years and have to tell y’all that the block PITT looks better to me. …not sying PITT shouldn’t bring back the script for special occasions, but I just like today’s block PITT!

Comment by IronmanEE68 09.04.09 @ 10:24 pm

once again, I warn you not to make too much of an impression on 1st games of the year. Note that all pros teams in any sport plays at least 20-25% of their schedule in preseason games, while college FB plays none.

Last year we lose to BG 1st game who loses at home to Minnesota (42-17) the very next week. We beat Iowa the 3rd week who beats Minnesota 55-0 later on. I could provide hundreds of esamples on how the 1st week of the schedule does not necessarily provide insight as to how good or ad a team is … mush of it depends on returning starters who habe much less of a learning curve than when you have to break in a lot of new players.

This may or may not be a concern when we open at Utah next year … not sure if they will have in experienced players compared to us.

Comment by w Bill 09.04.09 @ 10:32 pm

Seriously off topic, but it looks like Alex Van Pelt is going to start the season as the Bills offensive coordinator. I’m glad he’s getting the chance, and thought the team gave him the short end of the stick at times as a player (third-string behind Todd Collins and Billy Joe Hobert? Rlly? RLLY, Marv Levy?) but I’m also wary of ANYONE’S chances of thriving in the Dick Jauron system. Like, ever.

Comment by Brian BK 09.04.09 @ 11:41 pm

Any leads on watching the game visually on the interweb or are we stuck with just audio?

Jason, thanks for an awesome link to add to my favorites. Fellas, I am stoked for today, just wish it was on TV to watch. Still hoping for a lot of Tino playing time, but will be more than satisfied if we get a big time blow out! Hail to Pitt and let’s go Panthers!!!!

Lewis apparently is playing well… unfortunately with all the running we still can’t see what we have at QB, which we WILL need when we start playing better teams.
