On Not Getting the Russian

I’m just happy I do not have to worry about learning to spell Kyryl Natyazhko on a consistent basis.

Instead he heads to Arizona to be with Sean Miller and get a chance at starting immediately. The pain is more acute at Arizona State where the pupil bested the master and really re-energizes that rivalry, barely a week after Miller’s hiring.

I’m not so bothered since I wasn’t overly enthused about whether Pitt got him or not. He has the 4-star thing, but by all accounts he was a project. Not exactly a player to count on to step in right away unless you are in a complete rebuilding state — like in Arizona.

His potential eligibilty problems are not a shock. Whether he’s been at the IMG Academy for the past year or not, he’s still a foreign-raised player, and education eligibility and potentially playing on pro teams over in Europe are common issues.

Eligibility problems have seemingly become the norm rather than the exception with the NCAA. Ator Majok at UConn, Cinci might still be waiting on their own East European player. That’s just in the Big East.

His last name sounds a bit like “Nasty Asshole”. No, that won’t do at Pitt.

pitt athletics will be switching to nike. pederson is having a meeting with all student athletes tomorrow to give them the good news. i think this will be great, hopefully nike puts some legit effort into pitt…

If so, I hope Nike’s first project will be re-outfitting the football team. The current unis shout Div II. C’mon, Pitt on both the helmet and jersey?

If Natyazhko is indeed a project, I’m kind of glad that Pitt didn’t get him. With the incoming recruits and redshirts that include promising 6’9, two 6’8 and 6’7 players, I don’t believe we need another tall potential player.

I believe the only frontcourt player that should be considered would be a JUCO which may provide immediate help … and that is not likely. Otherwise, I have no problem with saving a scholarship for next year.

Yes, Pitt will not probably not be a top BE team next year, but can plan for the long-term with an annual and balanced influx of talented recruits.

Or get a juco PG in here for two yrs to smooth over the ballhandling issues……

Comment by hugh green 04.14.09 @ 8:26 am

I see that Jonny Flynn is supposed to sign with an agent … that will be a big loss to SU.

Comment by w bill 04.14.09 @ 8:47 am

Zagsblog reports that Dixon and Herion went to watch Jarrid Famous a 6’11” JUCO center workout. They had been previously involved with Famous but it hadn’t seemed like definite interest yet.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Pitt fans are fashion designers.

Comment by Joey T 04.14.09 @ 9:18 am

yeah…maybe Nike can do to us what they have done to Oregon (that is sarcasm)

Comment by Chris 04.14.09 @ 9:33 am

announced at 8am this morning(I have a friend on the girls tennis team). Pitt is going NIKE!

Comment by ryan 04.14.09 @ 10:49 am

what was pitt before? addidas? is syracuse nike? hopefully are new uni don’t look as riduclous

Comment by Gary 04.14.09 @ 10:53 am

I absolutely hate the tight tops and long shorts, think they look horrible, especially on big guys like Pitt has. Its fine on the super skinny ones, but I just hope they don’t put that fit on Pitt. Some of Nike’s teams have them and some don’t. I hate them. Although overall for merchandising and stuff this has to be a great move.

Comment by Ontario Lett's Go Pitt 04.14.09 @ 11:16 am

What seems like an inconsequential thing could actually change the whole recruiting scene for Pitt. AAU teams are sponsored by the shoe companies and if you watch the recruits they often commit to teams that use the same brand of jerseys/shoes that their AAU teams do. Could it change they type of players that Pitt recruits? Maybe. A lot of players flock to Nike just because of the Jordan aura.

I wish Pitt would stick with an apparel supplier or logo for more than 7 months.

Joey D, you are, of course, what you wear.

It seems like we have had adidas since I came to Pitt in 1997 at the very least. Although, I ish it were not so, this is a bit longer than 7 months!

Anyhow, this change is long overdue if you ask me. It seems like we have had way too many foot injuries… were the shoes to blame?

Comment by Tom 04.14.09 @ 3:31 pm

didnt pitt have Nike back when fitz was at Pitt?

Comment by mike 04.14.09 @ 3:55 pm

yes, fitz did have Nike jerseys.

AS expected, Thabeet has declared for the draft and will likely be drafted in the top part of 1st round. This is the antithesis of the Big East a year ago when it seemed everyone but Alexander stayed. I still think Pitt could be very competitive come next February and March.

Comment by w bill 04.14.09 @ 5:43 pm

Actually, I think he is Ukranian. That is not the same as Russian. Close enough I guess.

Comment by IKnowALL 04.14.09 @ 7:09 pm

anyone know when the official presser about the nike switch is gonna be?

Comment by Jon 04.14.09 @ 7:26 pm

Ya, Pitt was Nike in football under Harris, but they had been Adidas in hoops since Howland. I think they had champion before that and prior to that were Starter unis and Converse shoes under Willard.

Comment by TJ 04.14.09 @ 9:18 pm

The influence shoe companies have on colleges is very interesting. Here is a quote from a 2003 article inbetween the Howland and Dixon hirings: “The choice of adidas representative Sonny Vaccaro, who helped bring Howland to Pitt and also helped lead him to UCLA, is Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez. Vaccaro has called Gonzalez his next “Ben Howland” and believes he could maintain a program that Howland led to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and a 57-11 record the past two years.”
I think Vaccaro and Dixon didnt get along because against Vaccaro’s reccomendation Dixon didnt take the Northern Arizona job that Howland vaccated for Pitt.

Comment by econ 04.15.09 @ 9:17 am

you think they are going to have a press conference regarding an apparel provider? probably not, who would attend that. its not exactly important news

maybe a press release when new products are available

Comment by Jamie H 04.15.09 @ 9:29 am

econ, interesting post. looks like Dixon made the right choice. Vaccaro is a slime bag.

Comment by TJ 04.15.09 @ 9:35 am

Actually Vacarro is not all bad. He was the one with the foresight for creating the “Roundball Classic” whcih had about a 25 year very successful run, and generated much $$ for charity.

By calling him a slime because of his relationship with Dixon is unfair … remember that Howland would most likely have not come to Pitt had it not been for Vaccaro .. thus, he may have been one of the most important persons in recent Pitt atletic history.

College coaches love him since he started the large individual shoe contracts that supplement their income … and in the last several years, he has become a high school player’s advocate, trying to protect them from scrupilous agents as well as college coaches.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 04.15.09 @ 10:08 am

With all that we have just seen posted is true, Addidas is still shown as a corporate sponsor on Pitt’s website, not Nike. So it is still just a rumor, or has not taken affect yet.

Comment by dionjag 04.15.09 @ 10:13 am

Vaccarro has done some great things for high school and AAU ball. And nobody can dispute the success he has had in his career. He has signed some of the biggest names in sports to shoe contracts(see Jordan and Kobe). But he also uses his influence to push young recruits to colleges of his choice. He doesnt have an interest in high school ball because he likes the kids, he does it so he can say he’s been around since the beginning when that kid makes it to the NBA. Call him a slimebag all you want but he was good at what he did.
