But Pitt still came away with the 56-48 win. One thing I take away from Pitt’s performance is that I wish they had played at least one more true road game in the non-con. Get that combination of hostile crowds and unfamiliar rims.

I mean, Pitt came out getting baskets. Biggs drilled a nice open 3, Pitt hit 4-7 in the opening minutes. Then proceeded to go 6-29 the rest of the first half. The Pitt defense was solid the entire way, thankfully, and FSU lacked real threat beyond Toney Douglas on offense. None of the other FSU players just matched up with Pitt.

FSU played a tough zone and packed them inside to keep it clogged for Blair and prevent the slashing from Young. Make the team take jump shots. The same strategy employed by UMBC and one that can be expected from any team that has a coach with an ounce of intelligence. In this game, Pitt just was horrific shooting the ball. It was brutal.

All you can do is keep the ball moving around looking for the best open shot or a moment where the defense lapses to get in down. Otherwise, you hope the rebounds are near Blair for him to corral. I’m oversimplifying, I know.

You just hope this was an outlier game on the stat chart regarding the shooting. Like the UMBC probably was the other way. Just throw the numbers out from both of the games and expect something closer to the middle.

So, I’m not going to dwell too much on the offensive numbers. Especially not the guard jump shooting. Jermaine Dixon definitely adds a slashing element to the guards and his defense has been a pleasant surprise all season — so that I don’t freak out at his now standard 3-point shot that he invariably seems to take on the first possession seemingly every game.

10 days off, and the team ends the non-con 12-0. They don’t end it with a sour taste in their mouths and punditry pointing to the final game saying, see they were overrated.

There will be questions, though. That’s going to come with playing only 1 true road game and only 3 games out of 12 against major conference opponents — and none of them ranked.

AAAAHH! I’m so pissed at myself!

I drank straight through the Steelers game and passed out before the Pitt game came on, and woke up in time to see it going off the air.

Everyone’s talking about how poor our shooting percentage was today, and they’re right. But look what we held FSU to.

Not that it means anything yet really, but we are #1 on CBSsports’ RPI.

This is not a good shooting team, at all. I hate to sound so pessimistic when the team is undefeated and nearly sitting atop the polls, but I think you’re going to see a lot of games like this when the conference schedule heats up, and against teams that can rebound and are a little more dangerous offensively than FSU, it’s going to be ugly. Like Michigan State all over again ugly.

Although I agree that it would be better for them to be road-tested, they have had similar preseason schedules in the past like this year, and still have fared well in the Big East. Remember the axiom — shooting may be hot and cold but defense and rebounding can be there every game — (EFFORT)

Having said that … a cold shooting game has led to many letdowns in NCAA (Mich St, Pacific, OK St, etc)– this is where Sam must take over hopefully with more help from Levance.

I didn’t have the opp to watch the game but was following it stride for stride online.

Can someone please explain to me why there were so many fouls called against us? Was it deserved or were the refs being too sensitive?

Comment by MoE 12.22.08 @ 10:00 am

Fouls were deserved…..FSU was packing it in. JD had to have told the Pitt players to keep taking it right at them….Pitt continued to drive right at the FSU big men all day….altered a ton of shots….others simply didn’t fall. The could news…this is the first Pitt team I can remember that can drive off the dribble…a real weakness in the past….

Jeff:

FSU has one of the tallest teams in the country. Actually, the defensive rebounding was the best development from last nights game. If Biggs and Young help Blair out of the defensive boards, then Pitt is going to be really tough to beat.

It was an unbelievably ugly game…just how we like it.
We were a little sloppier than usual, but completely physically beat up FSU. It was great to see us make big plays when we needed to…I think that’s the sign of a good team. And Sam Young took control when we needed a score most.

Nice win.

Man, you’re all spoiled from this glittering non-con performance we’ve turned in. This game was not ugly. The shooting was not lousy. This game was BEAUTIFUL! This was Big East basketball at its finest…the Big East basketball we’ve trademarked and the kind we like to shove down people’s throats. I think this FSU team is going to give people problems (especially teams like Wake) in their conference schedule because of the brand of ball they play. Great game to watch, I was thinking the whole time: Duke would need pads and helmets to play this game. When you hold a top 40 team to 14 made field goals, you did a helluva thing.
