Last Non-Con of the Year

Tomorrow is the first of three straight road games. Admittedly there is a 10-day gap between the FSU game and Rutgers on the 31st. It also the first true road game of the season and the only one in the non-con. Oh, and it is only the third game against a team from a power conference. I guess, no matter how you slice it, it hasn’t been the most challenging non-con schedule.

The Pitt-FSU game is the FoxSports Net national game at 5:30. Tim Brando and Mike Gminski have the call. The game can be found on FoxSports Pittsburgh, North, South, Rocky Mountain, Arizona, Northwest, West, Detroit and Houston (Alternate); Comcast Chicago, Bay Area; Sunshine Network and MSG Plus.

The ESPN.com power poll holds Pitt steady at #3.

See Sam dunk. See Sam score. With Sam Young playing like an All-American and double-double machine DeJuan Blair down low, playing Pitt is a scary prospect for opposing Big East teams.

Yes, I know Gottlieb had Pitt down at #5. Shocking to be sure. He’s holding to his same talking points from the start of the season (Insider subs.).

After watching an extensive amount of tape on Pitt and calling their Siena game in person Wednesday night, I am left with about the same impression that I had before the season.

Pitt is very strong, long and athletic, and the addition of Jermaine Dixon at the 2-guard spot gives them a lockdown perimeter defender. Sam Young is a steadily improving wing who might be this year’s Joe Alexander. By that I mean Young is a dynamic scorer from 17 feet in, has the ability to post smaller guards, and in transition, he has not lost his incredible bounce. Young is not a true guard in terms of ballhandling or passing skill, and I still think they miss a Mike Cook-type of all-around weapon to make everyone else better. Tyrell Biggs is playing with a ton of confidence, and DeJuan Blair is just a complete beast at the block.

Of course there’s a but…

In terms of their Final Four potential or even Big East potential, it is obvious that the Panthers will win with their defense and inside scoring. To beat Pitt, you must stop them in transition off misses and turnovers, block out and contain Blair at the block. Fields is solid as heck, but they still lack offensive pop from the two guards they have had in the past. My questions linger …

• Can Blair stay out of foul trouble on the road?

• Can Fields’ foot not bother him the entire season?

• Can Jermaine Dixon shoot the ball like he did in exhibition games?

• Can Pitt score from the perimeter against a top-level zone or quality interior defense?

Roughly translated, I see no reason to change my notes cribbed from preseason magazines.

Jermaine Dixon is looking forward to the FSU trip since he played junior college down there. He might be a little too excited to play in front of friends.

“When coach (Jamie) Dixon came down in April to recruit me,” said Jermaine Dixon, who played two seasons at Tallahassee Community College, “he said we’d be coming back down to Tallahassee to play Florida State. I’ve been waiting for this ever since. I’ll get to see some old coaches, teammates and friends.”

Jermaine Dixon, the top shooting guard for No. 3 Pitt (11-0) struggled to contain his excitement Friday at Petersen Events Center before boarding a bus for the airport.

Judging from his level of enthusiasm, it was becoming a chore.

So, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised if Dixon hoists a few shots he shouldn’t early in the game.

Meanwhile in a notebook piece, no shock that Dwight Miller is being redshirted. Interesting that Coach Dixon felt the need to make a “special note” on Miller’s improvements in practice. Perhaps a subtle (or not so) way of letting Miller know he still figures into the plans and is an important part of the team.

Coach Dixon concedes that he is still struggling to give minutes to both Ashton Gibbs and Travon Woodall from game to game.

I’m watching Memphis play SoFla in FB and Syracuse in BB, and I have to say, it’s time for the BE to bring in Memphis. It’s a great city and a decent size market. The BE needs to give up on PSU and ND because neither of those schools are ever going to join the BE. We need a 9th team in FB to balance out the home and away schedules at 4 each per season. One more BB team is not going to change all that much since we don’t have “divisions” in BB. And when that one team is Memphis then “just do it”!

USF 41 – Memphis 14 with 5:39 left in the 4th
The BE doesn’t need any more football doormats.

And basketball is loaded .. maybe too loaded right now.

Comment by MelbaPlace 12.20.08 @ 7:52 pm

Cincy, SoFla, and UCONN were FB doormats before they gained the benefit of recruiting in a BCS Conference.

I agree with Memphis being good for BE football, he** them and East Carolina would be great IMO and I often have thought of Southern Miss as well.

I’m so pumped to back in Pittsburgh for this game..now if only they’d play a home game when I came home for the holidays!!

GO PITT!!!!

Comment by Caroline 12.21.08 @ 2:09 pm

is there ANY way to watch this game from the Philly area?

Comment by merlin 12.21.08 @ 5:40 pm

Merlin, if you get FSN, yes. It’s FSN feature game this evening.

Comment by Dugdog 12.21.08 @ 5:47 pm

I don’t get FSN…I have Comcast cable, which blows. I think it’s on Channel 263 or something but that’s a paid channel. I hate having to follow a game by updating the box score over and over.

Comment by merlin 12.21.08 @ 5:47 pm

yeah it sucks. im in philly and have comcast too. so im just watching gamecast on espn haha

Comment by James 12.21.08 @ 6:45 pm

Whew.

Comment by Brian 12.21.08 @ 7:43 pm

Ugly, physical, close game. A good non-con road win though.

Comment by Dugdog 12.21.08 @ 7:50 pm

Pitts game against FSU was a good lesson for Pitt. Pitt must play Defense to cause turnovers then transition fastbreak for there points. Quickly. If Pitt gets into a setup offense they will have problems. Our shooting from outside is lacking to say the least. And our ballhandling (other then Feilds) is horrible.

The Big East opponents will play Pitt just like FSU did and zone them out and pack it in against Blair. Pitt will have to make some shots. It looks suspect,Our setup offense needs someone that can shoot consistantly to make it work. Open the lane for Young and Dixon needs to have someone that is an outside threat.

But tonites game was won when we played great D and caused turnovers and then ran them out of the gym.

Nice to be able to discuss Pitt’s shortcomings after a win on the road. We all know the drill, horrible shooting, poor foul shots, over passing…etc. All that will be fixed as the season goes on….this is a quality team.

My one concern (and hope I never see it again) it the nonchalent inbounds pass to the corner against a Full court press….been a bad habit for years.

The difference this year is Dixon, his penetration and smooth shooting from outside.

Big, tough win …..Go Pitt!!

Comment by dan 72 12.21.08 @ 8:04 pm

from what it sounds like, tonights game was a traditional pitt game. we dont blow out teams, but we play defense and find a way to win. im psyched we’re headin into big east play undefeated. now i just want revenge on rutgers for the embarrassment at the pete last year. and after that, our first possible statement game.

Comment by Jon 12.21.08 @ 8:06 pm

I thought too much one-on-one play and rushed/forced shots — didn’t make the extra pass. L Fields is still not in game shape, and G Brown did not contribute much today.

Nonetheless, a (road) win is a (road) win!

Comment by w bill 12.21.08 @ 8:22 pm

Gilbert Brown was simply outstanding today. His defense got Pitt back into the game. He was instrumental in the 17-0 run that won Pitt the game. The box-score does not do him justice today.

Comment by Omar 12.21.08 @ 8:24 pm

I as big a pitt hoops fan as there is. Not sure about all the hate towards national reporters-I couldn’t agree with them more.

This team simply can’t hit jump shots and free throws.

They are a good team, but as of today, they are not a final four team.

Glad for the win though..

Comment by hot sauce 12.21.08 @ 8:37 pm

Pitt hits jump shots when they need to. I watch a lot of basketball. I haven’t seen one team that Pitt cannot compete with. Pitt has a definite chance to get to the Final 4.

Comment by Omar 12.21.08 @ 8:51 pm

We do hit them when we need to. Feilds with 2mins. left in game were up 2 and he hits his only 3pt of the game. Big Huge bucket. We seem to be great under pressure shooting wise. But that said, you live by the sword and die by the sword.

Comment by buzz 12.21.08 @ 8:57 pm

Also keep this in mind…Fields and Brown are not yet 100%. This was more evident in Fields tonight than Brown. Those two will be at 100% soon, and when they are, this team can beat any team in the country.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.21.08 @ 9:11 pm

Our defense was superlative. And Sam, after figuring things out, took control. Wonderful to watch us come back so swiftly from the first real deficit this year.

You gotta give Sam credit for his smarts.

I got the sense Dixon was pressing most of the game, trying to give his 40 fans something to remember him by. Did you?

Levance doesn’t seem in top form. When he is watch out!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by steve 12.21.08 @ 9:45 pm

Hows this for shooting, Feilds 1-10,Gibbs 1-6,Wannamaker 0-5,Biggs 2-5 thats 4=26/

I would think that we would have lost with that mess. But the D stepped up.

Comment by buzz 12.21.08 @ 9:47 pm

A positive outlook on tonight is that they found a way to win on the road when they couldn’t shoot.

I felt like they forced way too many shots tonight. FSU did well with the zone defense. I’d like to see Pitt have set plays against the zone that open up mid-range shots.

Comment by Hail2Pitt 12.21.08 @ 10:13 pm

Our guards’ shooting percentage is atrocious. We’re definitely going to have step it up in the coming weeks. I like Jermaine Dixon. He’s a solid defender, good slasher and he can hit threes. But, with that said, i’m not sure I trust him to hit a ramon-esque dagger three to kill off a WVU or whomever. The defense continues to get it done, but I’d hate to see us run up against a team that is capable of consistently making their outside shots.

Comment by hail to Pitt 12.21.08 @ 10:45 pm

I’d really like to see more of a mid-range game. 1 of every 3 shots against FSU was a 3-pointer. That seems unnecessary. Young, Brown, Wannamaker, Fields can all drive and pull up for 10-12 footers. If you can start knocking those down, then they D has to respect you and it can soften up the inside. I know FSU packed it in, but those mid-range shots are there.

And is there some sort of electro-shock device that McGhee can wear so that every freakin’ time he touches the ball he doesn’t bring it down? Just one or two hoops from him each game would be a huge plus.

Overall, though, good win. That D is awesome, and they made big plays in the last 2 minutes of the game to pull out a tough road win. That was proof to me this team is definitely for real. Now just need Fields and Brown to be bigger offensive contributors.
