Okay, one of the big match-ups in the game will be the Cinci secondary vs. the Pitt receivers.

That’s because the Bearcats (8-2, 4-1) feature three of the Big East’s best defensive players in cornerbacks DeAngelo Smith and Mike Mickens and safety Brandon Underwood.

The trio has combined to intercept seven passes and break up 19 others, and all three are among the team’s six leading tacklers. Mickens, who is a four-year starter and has been an all-Big East selection three times, leads the Bearcats with 65 tackles, 43 of them solo.

That the Bearcats can trust their secondary to go man, keys the rest of their defense.

“Having those types of DBs in the backfield not only allows us to have one-on-one matchups and blitz quarterbacks more,” Cincinnati defensive end Connor Barwin said, “but a lot of our sacks are coverage sacks.”

Mickens and Smith have combined for six interceptions this season and 26 in their careers. They also have 16 pass breakups between them this fall, which will force Pitt quarterback Bill Stull to make sound decisions.

“We’ve been talking all week about their D-backs,” Stull said. “They’re definitely a very, very talented defense.

“I just need to be smart. Maybe some throws I think might be there, they might not, and I have to hit a check-down. I have to make sure I don’t force anything.”

It might also help, not to stare down the receiver this game. It’s one of the legitimate criticisms of Stull. He does tend to lock on a receiver.

Zeise calls tonight’s game an elimination game, not a championship game.

That’s why tonight’s game at Nippert Stadium is probably more accurately defined as a Big East elimination game than a Big East championship game.

“We all know it is a big game and there is a lot at stake,” said Pitt fullback Conredge Collins. “But at the same time, it isn’t our last game and we have a few more big ones after it so we need to be focused on winning this one.”

Although the losing team will not be mathematically eliminated from title consideration, it would need so many things to go right in order to have a chance.

Well, Cinci would not necessarily get to the BCS game, but they would still have an excellent shot at claiming a share of the Big East title. Just have Pitt and WVU split their final two games. Either way, both teams need/want this game.

An interesting thing with Elijah Fields and the hard time for him to get on the field.

Q: I keep hearing rumors that Elijah Fields doesn’t get more playing time because he doesn’t know what he is doing (assignments etc.) out there. How can this be possible? He has been here for 3 years now. Is Bennett’s defense that much different that Rhoads?

ZEISE: That is not entirely true and it is more complicated than what it sounds like. Elijah Fields is being asked to play a number of different positions and coaches believe he can help them more playing a hybrid safety/linebacker type of position than limiting him to a safety spot. He has been asked to play a different position in all of the sub packages and different defenses and he has been used in different games with different matchups. They like his ability to cover and his ability to stop the run because of his size and they think they are wasting him if he is not doing more than just hanging back as a safety. So he’s being asked to absorb a lot of stuff and his playing time has increased tremendously over the past two games. I’d expect him to see the field a lot tonight because of the matchup with Cincinnati’s spread offense.

I know, why question success of a team with only 2 losses. Here’s what’s bothering me about this. Fair or not, Fields has long had his ability to learn to play within the system questioned. To know the plays and not just freelance. Whether it’s an issue of learning it, or not just relying on instinct. If that is true, wouldn’t the worst thing, would be to have him playing too many other positions other than safety? To have to know multiple assignments and responsibilities. Wouldn’t that be an additional hindrance to his development and getting on the field?

Special teams ace, Andrew Taglianetti gets a puff piece. Helps to have a relatively famous father in the area.

Cinci fans have been ticked at their local paper’s website this week, because apparently they’ve had too many pictures of Dave Wannstedt. This piece on Wanny didn’t help.

Bearcat fans excited like never before.

I’m looking forward to a lot of people on this disgusting website eating crow tonight. Congrats douches, you just turned a Pitt student into a Pitt football hater!

That being said, go Pitt basketball, beat IUP!

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 3:30 pm

Oh, and if Pitt wins, I will come on here and personally apologize, OK? But that won’t make me come back to being a Pitt football fan.

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 3:31 pm

What is your problem with Pitt football??

Comment by Chris 11.22.08 @ 3:48 pm

Please just ignore.

Joshua. I would appreciate it if you never come back to this site. You have made your feeling more than abundantly clear about how you hate Wannstedt. Fine. We get it. It colors everything you see on the matter. Now go elsewhere.

Comment by Chas 11.22.08 @ 3:51 pm

The basketball team is up 17-0. I wouldn’t mind that as a football score as well!

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 4:11 pm

Can’t get the game, where is it?

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 4:28 pm

I am tracking it. IUP is on a 15-4 run if you can believe it. We put in the freshmen and it looks like they got owned.

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 4:29 pm

Chas,

I wish to reiterate my thanks to you for providing this forum for Pitt students, fans, and alums to discuss Panther athletics. We may not always agree on here, but I am glad that the tenor always remains civil.

Also, any updates from back home on the Pens or WPIAL games look? I an following Pitt Hoops on the ESPN.com ticker and see that Clairton won the Single A game.

Thanks for any info you guys can give.

Chris, my problem is with Wanny and the irrational people who suck his dick and think he can do no wrong, even if he’s the idiot child of Pittsburgh. He’s 7-2, thanks to a run against incompetent and overrated teams, but apparently people around here want to trumpet that 7-2 record as if Pitt is the second coming of Ohio State or Oklahoma. Pitt hasn’t played a “good” opponent all year long (and by good, I mean above-.500 teams that have above-.500 conference records in BCS conferences and have won at least two games against above-.500 teams), yet all the fans want to do is treat this team like it’s hot s**t when in reality it might be warmed-over frozen poo. I post on here that the Pitt-ND game was the biggest example of two overrated teams who just could not beat each other without a fluke happening, and I get slammed because I don’t suck on Wanny’s cock. Bowling Green is not good. Buffalo is only winning in the MAC. The Iowa team we played (here’s a hint: it’s not the same Iowa team that beat Penn State) was not good. Navy can only beat mid-majors. Louisville, USF, and Notre Dame have all proven themselves to be wildly overrated. Yet I see people on here who like to disrespect UC and WVU, thinking that Pitt will outclass them with just talent? OK, maybe that isn’t exclusively a Yinzer trait, as apparently it can be seen with quite a few Duke basketball fans, whom I know Pitt fans absolutely LOATHE. The big difference: Duke has a recent track record, Pitt hasn’t shown S**T since Walt was forced out. Tonight’s game will be a Game of Reckoning for a lot of people. It’ll be a Game of Reckoning for the Cinci program, the Pitt program, Wanny, and Pitt fans in general. Cinci has stepped up in a game against an opponent gunning for the conference championship, and has faced a lot more adversity along the way. They’re strong mentally. I don’t think Pitt is strong mentally, as reflected in a coach who makes a lot of boneheaded decisions. I think they’ll fold against Cinci, and fold hard.

Blair with 20 points and 16 rebounds in the first half alone!

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 4:42 pm

Holy crap,

A 20 and 15 for Blair at the half! I don’t care about the level of competition, that’s impressive.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 4:42 pm

Panthoor,

Well said, my good man.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 4:43 pm

Panthoor, I’ve now got the radio feed, thanks. Even more of a rout now thanks to Blair, 45 – 17. Seems though that the frosh went in and verminated for awhile.

Penn State fb cruising, aarrgghh.

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 4:44 pm

Oh, and Pitt will never in a million years beat this year’s Boise State team, but will Boise State be allowed into the BCS club this season?

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 4:46 pm

Yeah, Steve, as soon as you typed that sentence, State Clown College hung another touchdown on MSU.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 4:46 pm

Ok, good talk Joshua. We’ll look forward to seeing you during bball season.

Comment by Chris 11.22.08 @ 4:52 pm

Cuse giving ND all they can handle; now, 13 – 10 ND. A better bowl bid if ND loses, correct?

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 5:00 pm

I think you are correct, Steve. I don’t see how the Gator/Sun Bowls could select a 6-6 ND Team over a 9-3 Big East Team. It seems like the Gator gets first choice and they could always Select a Big 12 team, but that would default the Big East runner up to the Sun Bowl.

As far as the Big 12, I think we will have their top 2 teams in the BCS championship/as an at-large (assuming the winner of the Big 12 South wins the Big 12 Championship), and their 3rd best team in the Holiday Bowl. Basically, I think that some combo of Texas, Texas Tech, or Oklahoma grabs those three slots, leaving a solid Missouri or Oklahoma State in the Gator/Sun Bowl slot.

Anybody agree or disagree?

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 5:04 pm

Unfortunately spoke too soon, ND now leads 20-10.

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 5:14 pm

Joshua I agree fans shouldn’t be “sucking Wanny’s dick” as you so elegantly put it. I also agree that they haven’t faced a very difficult schedule. But to say this team is not strong mentally is where you show your ignorance. We have watched this team buckle down and come from behind to win several times this season. Regardless of the oppenent, to repeatedly come from behind to win games shows they are mentally strong. Those were all games that past Pitt teams would have folded in, but this team kept fighting. To change the subject it is so good to see that Sam Young pump fake back in action!

Comment by stache 11.22.08 @ 5:24 pm

No one has been more critical (and angry with) of Wanny than I this season. Having said that, and being a Pitt fan since 1962, I give him his due along with Cav.
and congratulate them for having Pitt in this position. We tend to forget that these are kids coming out of high school and that there is a huge disparity in talent, size etc between a freshman and senior. Coaching is NOT everything and while we can argue his decisions Pitt is in fact 7-2, bowl bound, and has a chance to win the Big East.

Having said the above, I expect a Pitt win tonight and think they are the more talented team on the field. Stull is the wild card. He will have to have a good or great game for us to win.

Comment by dan 72 11.22.08 @ 5:38 pm

Watch the ‘cuse get a TD and a 2.

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 5:49 pm

It looks like we just sent the starters to the bench and just let the kiddies have some fun. I am guessing that with the starters in we hang 100 easy on them and they don’t get 50. There is no need for that though because we need these guys rested for Belmont on Tuesday. The freshmen and McGhee got some good minutes.

Blair went Incredible Hulk…wish I could have seen the game. I can see the fanny hitting IUP faces and then the pain, followed by points and shame.

Alright, let’s get ready for some Football! Go Panthers!

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 5:51 pm

Sorry, they don’t even have to go for 2 to win it.

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 5:52 pm

Oh, and now that I remember, I think the one thing that really turned me off to Pitt football was at the Bowling Green game. The wheels were starting to fall off, and I started chanting “Fire Wanny!” Some jagoff just outside the student section started yelling at me and threatened to fight me. It was at that point that I realized that a hell of a lot of Pitt fans were just like that jagoff, and that’s when I started to root for the other team just to spite myself. So yeah, I hate Wannstedt, but I didn’t hate Pitt football before this season. The jagoff fans this season made me take that jump.

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 5:53 pm

And as for teams being stretched by weak sisters of the poor and “mental toughness”, I just have to point to the Duke-Belmont game in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season. A whole bunch of jagoffs on the Duke boards started yelling, “Now we’re going to win the NCAA championship,” just because they managed to hold off the weak sisters of the poor with a made basket and Belmont missed shot in the final 15 seconds of the game. Thuggins’ boys made sure to shut them up two days later. That’s why whenever I’m on the Duke boards and I see crap like that, I’m just going to say one word: Belmont.

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 5:57 pm

TD Syracuse, 24-23 ‘Cuse.

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 5:59 pm

Cuse with the TD!

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:01 pm

The ‘cuse 24 – ND 23!!!

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 6:04 pm

Syracuse is freaking garbage. How do you let Golden Taint catch that ball?

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:04 pm

Yes! I mean no!!

Comment by steve 11.22.08 @ 6:05 pm

Fat Charlie = stunned! Notre Dame and all their faithful are in shock!

Nice to see Fat Charlie calling the offensive plays made such a tremendous difference.

Jokes.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:06 pm

Classy move by Paul P to not interrupt their alma mater. Notre Dame players look like they just endured the Bhutan Death March.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:09 pm

You know you have hit rock bottom when: Syracuse beats you at home and their undead coach wants the rights to the story.

Comment by Panthoor 11.22.08 @ 6:09 pm

Is the Maurice Polen on IUP’s roster the same walk-on who played for us?

Lombardi’s raiding our talent. How’s that for gratitude!

😉

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.22.08 @ 6:09 pm

I mean coach Robinson…wrong garbage ‘Cuse coach.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:10 pm

Indeed the same walkon, Dave. As I understand he earned his Pitt degree last year and decided to pursue his final year of eligibility at IUP for some better shots at playing time. Best of luck to him in the future.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:12 pm

johnny, I think you mean “Bataan”. Bhutan is landlocked Himalayan country between India and China.

Comment by Joshua 11.22.08 @ 6:19 pm

Good point, Joshua. At least I didn’t write the ‘Batman’ Death March, which I have learned is also the name of a city in Turkey. Plus something about Buddhist Death Marches just doesn’t seem natural.

Comment by johnny 11.22.08 @ 6:27 pm

Dave, I’ve read that Maurice was a very popular member of former Pitt teams. I’m sure we’ll join him for a few Oakland O’s after the game.
