BlogPoll Week 8, Draft

Good god, it’s a mess.

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas 1
2 Alabama 1
3 Penn State
4 Oklahoma
5 Georgia
6 Southern Cal
7 Florida
8 Texas Tech 1
9 Ohio State 2
10 Oklahoma State 3
11 Utah 1
12 LSU 4
13 Boise State 6
14 Pittsburgh 12
15 South Florida 2
16 TCU 10
17 Ball State 3
18 Kansas 4
19 Georgia Tech 6
20 Minnesota 4
21 Missouri 6
22 Brigham Young 10
23 Tulsa 3
24 Oregon 2
25 Virginia Tech 7
Dropped Out: North Carolina (#16), Wake Forest (#21), Michigan State (#22), California (#23).

Utah didn’t deserve to fall a spot, but Oklahoma St. deserved to be higher. Teams that deserved to fall out, but couldn’t because there was no other team that was worth plugging in, included VT, BYU and Missouri.

I have to admit being very uncomfortable having Pitt so high. I really don’t feel they should be up that high, but there was no one behind them I could say with real certainty should be in front. I do understand why Pitt is lower in most other polls. Looking at body of work — which should be a factor — that BGSU loss has increasingly become a bigger millstone around the team. The Falcons lost again over the weekend to fall to 3-4. There’s no good way to spin a bad home loss like that for purposes of rankings and polls.

Oregon got back into the poll on the bye week, because well, their two losses were at least to ranked team. A close loss to Boise St. and getting abused by USC — the week after Oregon St. upset the Trojans.

Georgia Tech gets a big bounce from all the teams losing. Plus, they pulled out a win over a very emotional Clemson team in Clemson. That counts for something to me, especially with mental toughness. Paul Johnson is doing a great job there.

There’s no way I’m putting Florida St. in there. They may be 5-1, but with 2 1-AA wins and a few close escapes — including the NC State game — they are not good enough.

I hate having Texas Tech that high. I find them an entertaining team, but reality will hit soon. They at least seemed more convincing than LSU.

Last week I noted that BYU just didn’t look like a team to trust. I was right with that. Of course, I was also very high on UNC moving up and then they blew it against Virginia.

As always reasoned arguments are welcome. Just remember, if you think a team should be lower or removed, I need a replacement and/or good reasons why the teams below should be higher.

UPDATE: Here’s what the full draft poll looks like. Pitt comes in at #17 at the moment.

It is very clear that Pitt is a completely different team since the Bowling Green loss. Pitt has played better each week this season. This is a respectable team right now with a chance to be really good by the end of the year.

agreed… people like to bring up.. you coldn’t beat bowling green… so is that saying that south florida, navy, iowa, are worse then bowling green ?

Chas,
I have to say I pretty much agree with your rankings this week. I do hate LSU being so high however. I think they are an absolutely awful offensive football team with 2 terrible QB’s that have played. That being said, their really is no place else to put them because of their record. I also hate to have PSU so high. I admit they have been impressive, but to this point they have played NOBODY. The Wisconsin road win looks less impressive now. But, they are undefeated and they have to stay their until they slip-up. (Pitt should take a note from them, JoePa loves to run up the score, example Wisconsin, and style point obviously count in the poles. If they kept up with McCoy and play-action they couldve put up 60 some on Navy). Last thought: The Big 12 still is the best conference, the SEC’s lack of offense in general puts them below, after that I am convinced it is a crap shoot. Right now the Big 10, ACC, Pac-10 and Big East are equal in my mind. Many may disagree, but I feel these conferences all have a a couple very good teams, some good teams, and some mediocre/bad teams.

No team that plays Coastal Carolina should ever play for the national championship.

i think TCU deserves to be higher, if you wanna drop Pitt and South Florida a slot or two each to feel better about yourself. Same with Missouri…they just lost to Texas IN Austin. I know they looked bad in getting beat but there’s no way they’re only the 21st best team in the country.

Missouri has 2 losses, with an absolutely embarrassing loss at Texas. Regardless if its to the top team in the country that is 2 in a row, they should stay low. 2 in a row with a good performance at Texas would be forgiveable, but that was atrocious. TCU doesn’t deserve to be higher than Pitt. Pitt won a big road game on a thursday night, TCU won at home on a Thursday night, That kind of atmosphere is a huge advantage and Pitt overcame that where TCU was able to use it.

Pittsburgher- TCU’s only loss is to Oklahoma. Ours is to Bowling Green. I don’t care if it was 5 weeks ago, they should be higher than us, beating the 9th ranked team by 25 instead of by 5.

Don’t do it. Don’t jinx us. You know what happens. We’re going to win that award…put us at 20 max.
