Recruiting Tides

Well, it seems that Pitt was ultimately tripped up by the insane NCAA and conference rules that got Nebraska this summer. Darnell Dodson is not permitted to come to Pitt.

Dodson was a class of 2007 commitment for Pittsburgh, but found out last September that he was not going to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Since Dodson was enrolled at Pittsburgh and declared a non-qualifier, he was not allowed to be on scholarship at Pitt due to the Big East rule not allowing member schools to accept non-qualifiers…

Of course, Dodson had initially appeared eligible, but the NCAA Clearinghouse came back with more questions — in September. They hadn’t ruled on his status prior to the start of Pitt’s fall semester. In fact, they didn’t rule on him until October.

That left him and Pitt in a questionable situation. Especially since he was already enrolled. That meant all Pitt and Dodson could do would be take a chance with an appeal when the time came. It didn’t and an additional upshot is that the Big East keeps him from being recruited by any other Big East teams. Seems the Big East has a rule akin to the Big 12 that says if a non-qualifier is enrolled — even if he is declared a non-qualifier after the fact — he is out at all BE schools after he goes to Junior College. Which is really stupid since the NCAA banned kids from going to prep school when they can’t get eligible — so Dodson had little choice but to go JUCO.

Given Dodson’s from the Maryalnd, I’m guessing Gary Williams and Maryland will be active in pursuing him. Along with schools like VCU and Virginia Tech. Good luck to Darnell Dodson.

Pitt almost immediately, though, filled the scholarship with a power forward/center project in Talib Zanna.

Talib Zanna has impressed the NBE Basketball Report in the summer for the player he has become, but the player he could become has always had our staff very intrigued. Early in July at the Agent Zero to Hero event Zanna showed his ability to run the floor and improved willingness to battle in the post. At the Reebok Summer Championships Zanna displayed ability to face-up and attack off the dribble.

At 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds Zanna has the size to compete in the Big East and the athletic ability that had college coaches watching this summer. One major college assistant watching Zanna this summer remarked he “Has Major upside! Very long and athletic. Rebounds very well.” Zanna finished his summer playing for the Triple Threat AAU program after starting the AAU circuit with the DC Blue Devils. He will compete in his senior season with Bishop McNamara this season.

Tanna also had interest/offers from Georgetown, UConn and Providence. Not to mention VT, Clemson and Villanova.

Rivals.com doesn’t have him ranked or starred. Scout.com puts him as a 3-star and ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc. considers him a top-150 player (Insider subs.).

Zanna is a highly skilled and athletic big man who missed most of his sophomore year due to injury. This native of Nigeria has lots of bounce that enables him to get to the ball quickly on the glass to rebound and to dunk a lot. For his size he can face and penetrate, pass off the high post, and drop an occasional three. Able to score with either hand, Talib plays much in the mold of Tim Duncan.

Definitely a player that Pitt looks at as a development project, high-upside player.

Zanna, who came to the United States from Nigeria in 2006, was in Pittsburgh when the Panthers’ played host to Iowa earlier this month at Heinz Field.

Zanna has a reputation as a player who can run the floor and is willing to battle inside.

“He’s a strong, athletic kid,” said Keith Stevens, who coached Zanna on the D.C. Blue Devils AAU team. “He has a lot of potential. He has the ability go 15 feet from the basket and hit shots; and he’s a solid defender. He’s going to be a perfect complement to Dante Taylor.”

Locally, Tom Droney crossed Wake Forest off his list. He’s down to Pitt, Davidson and ND.

I’d like to see a consistent three-point threat get added to the mix. A lot of athletic slashers/defenders so far – which is great considering the style we play. But it sure would be nice to have someone who can shoot the rock consistently. The fact that Sam is our best returning shooter — by far — and nobody else shot above 30-percent from beyond the arc is a bit unnerving.
I thought Droney fit that mold, but it doesn’t appear to be the case.

“…ok shooter to 15 feet…,” doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. He’s obviously still young, though, so maybe there’s some upside…
Jermain Dixon was supposed to help in that area as well — but he only shot 27% from three at Tallahassee CC last year.

Strange, considering the lack of a solid outside shooter has been our Achille’s heel in just about every NCAA loss over the past seven years. Opponents just pack it in and dare us to shoot. Michigan State held us to 2-17 shooting last year and we lost by 11. Six for 17, just four more makes and still only 35 percent, wins the game. And imagine how lethal we could be with Young and Blair free to do their work on the inside.

Interesting read on Droney…

Freshman Ashton Gibbs was recruited to help fill that void. He is supposed to be a lights out three-point shooter.

Dave…haven’t you heard about Ashton Gibbs? NJ State 3-point champion? Has hit double-digit treys in a game? He’s our new three-point threat, and I think he’ll be even better than Ronny Ramon (as much as I love #4) in not too long.

Comment by merlin 09.29.08 @ 3:22 pm

Haha Yogi I was typing mine up before you posted…good timing.

Gibbs will be good. I wouldn’t give up on Jermaine Dixon either. Both of them could get hot around December, just in time for conference play.

Ramon and Benjamin were my favorite players but they were so inconsistent. They were either smothering good or we lost because we needed someone like them to step it up from deep. Ramon’s 3-pointer at the buzzer against W.Virginia at home will be on a future DVD. I will give him that, not many people could have hit that shot in that moment in time.

I think James Padgett ended his recruitment a bit early when he committed to Maryland. I think after Richardson signed, he thought it was over for us and frontcourt players. Does anyone know more about this? .. or were we favoring Zanna over Padgett from the start?

I would fill the last spot with Durand Scott. I don’t think our chances in signing Dominic Cheek are very good, so let’s make sure we keep on Scott until he decides to pull the trigger. A good shooter added to this class and we can rest easy.

So what’s the deal with this Droney kid? I’m always hesitant about basketball players coming out of the WPIAL for the obvious reasons, so what are everyone’s thoughts on Droney? Is he really a player that a top notch program should be investing a scholarship on…or is he just another Yuri Demitris? (i.e. tear it up in the WPIAL and then rot on the bench for 4 years in the Big East)

Comment by Jake 09.29.08 @ 4:48 pm

Hey – Yuri Demetris also beat his girlfriend.

Comment by Joey D 09.29.08 @ 9:34 pm

If she was going out with Yuri, she probably had it coming.

Ramon was consistent before he got hurt. That really destroyed his shooting.
If I remember correctly, he was around a 43% shooter from 3-point range. I’ll take that any day.
Then he had a shoulder injury and was never the same.

Hey Jake, what league produced Blair, Herb Pope, DJ Kennedy (to name a few) lately?

Comment by baudolino 09.30.08 @ 12:24 pm

Baudolino,
You can’t possibly tell me you think the WPIAL is a good basketball league. That is like 3 decent players in the last 10 years. Football is king.

Comment by Jimbbb 09.30.08 @ 12:37 pm

Baudolino,

As Jimbbb points out, two or three decent players in 10-20 years really isn’t much to be excited about. And the three you mention were in the past couple years. (On a side note: this makes me wonder how much impact Pitt becoming a national power has had on the high school basketball scene around here? We’ve had a solid program for about 10 years now, and now the WPIAL is starting to churn out some good players. Maybe this is just a sign of things to come…at least I hope. It’d be nice to find star caliber guys in our own backyard.)

Comment by Jake 09.30.08 @ 2:53 pm

Which time are you talking about when Ramon got hurt?
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th? They all seem to blend…

Comment by Joey D 09.30.08 @ 4:53 pm

My point was that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s just not right to think of WPIAL in terms of Yuri Demetris as being representative for the league during the past 5-6 years. I mean, seriously – Danny Fortson? Ben McCauley?

The quality has been steadily improving (Zeke Marshall this year seems to be another decent player), and yeah, one would think the recent success of Pitt might have something to do with it. Isn’t that a good thing for our recruiting area? Aren’t you guys excited about a legit 6-6 PG with shooting skills and good fundamentals?

Comment by baudolino 09.30.08 @ 5:29 pm

Actually, I did forget about Gibbs. Whoops ๐Ÿ˜‰
Just found this video of him:

Looks like a solid player. Form reminds me a bit of Bostick on the hardwood, but I guess it doesn’t matter if the shots fall. I’m most excited about his apparent ability to hit clutch free throws ๐Ÿ˜‰

BTW — In my search for info on Gibbs I came across today’s post from Andy Katz’ blog:

รขโ‚ฌยข Pitt senior guard Levance Fields is still going through a slow rehab process in coming back from foot surgery. Fields suffered an infection above his foot that has slowed his recovery. The good news is that it has allowed the bone to heal since the surgery. But Fields hasn’t been able to get on the court to play in individual workouts. He’s still projected to be ready for the start of the season in November, but the Panthers’ coaching staff isn’t putting too much pressure on him practicing in two-plus weeks.

Fields broke his left foot Dec. 29, 2007 in a loss at Dayton. He missed the next 12 games. Pitt went 8-4 in his absence. Fields then had bone-graft surgery on the foot in late August.

In Fields’ absence, the Panthers have been able to give much-needed minutes at the point to freshmen guards Travon Woodall and Ashton Gibbs. The Panthers need both of them to be ready to go in October, and maybe in November, in the event Fields isn’t 100 percent. The Panthers’ staff is also feeling confident about the progress of sophomore guard Brad Wanamaker and JC transfer Jermaine Dixon.

Pitt associate head coach Tom Herrion said there is no panic yet about Fields’ slower-than-expected recovery. Instead, the emphasis is on ensuring the Panthers are deep enough at the point before the season.
