Here’s a blast from the past as there’s a piece on one of the few bright spots from the Ralph Willard era — Vonteego Cummings back home in Georgia.

The 32-year-old Cummings returned to his childhood playground last Saturday to kick off the Vonteego Cummings First Annual Community Day. The event was attended by more than 150 people – many of them youth and teens – who celebrated the occasion with games, including shooting hoops and eating hamburgers, hot dogs, and enjoying cold drinks.

“This was their day – a day of celebrating with them and giving back a little of what this community has given so much to me through the years,” said Cummings, a 1995 graduate of Thomson High School, where he was a star basketball player. After graduation, Cummings, the son of John David and Carri Mae Cummings, of Thomson, went on to become an outstanding basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh.

At Pitt, Cummings, who played point guard, averaged 17 points per game during his four-year career.

Today, Cummings plays for the Israeli Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team in the European League. The team is the second-best in the European League.

It’s still a rough go, however for another Pitt alum. Clyde Vaughan appeared poised to finally land an assistant coaching job with New Mexico State — where Herb Pope still plays (Insider subs.). But, no.

New Mexico State has decided against hiring former Connecticut, South Florida, and Long Beach State assistant and one-time Pitt forward Clyde Vaughan as an assistant coach. Vaughan resigned from his position at UConn after he was arrested in 2004 on a solicitation charge. That arrest continues to haunt him. Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg has long been a proponent of giving Vaughan a second chance, but Greenberg said he hasn’t had a recent opening on his staff for Vaughan.

Of course, Greenberg was the one who recruited Vaughan to Pitt when he was an assistant.

I feel bad for Vaughan. I really do. On the scale of crimes, it’s pretty low. Guys with DUIs get more chances.

There are two things working against Vaughan, though, in this instance.

It’s not the severity of the crime, but the type that drags him down. It’s not easy to picture Vaughan going to a recruit’s family and telling them how he will be looking out for the kid, helping him to grow. All the while he’s got to answer questions about his solicitation charges — and the fact that it means he betrayed his wife. Something, I don’t think Vaughan has ever grasped.

The other thing, and this is probably worse for his chances, is that it wasn’t his first offense. He has a history of this.

According to the report, Vaughan was arrested and charged in July 1992 in Long Beach, Calif., just prior to joining the staff at Cal State Long Beach. He also was arrested, charged and convicted in Tampa of approaching an undercover police officer and offering her $20 for sex while he was an assistant at the University of South Florida in 1999. The Long Beach charges, details of which were not available, eventually were dismissed, according to the paper.

You can’t be worrying what your assistant coaches will be doing in their spare time, on top of worrying about the players.

DeAndre Kane out of Schenley is headed to prep school in New Hampshire. I wonder whether he’ll ever make it into a college uniform. I also can’t help but wonder if he’s got a learning disability. No one questions that he has talent, but no one can commit a scholarship until they can see that he will be able to survive the academic side. It’s too big of a risk, especially with the Academic Progress Rate and potential penalties.

This reads like it is just a matter of when for Tom Droney to commit to Pitt. Droney is only junior, and will be part of the 2010 recruiting class.

Droney, from Sewickley Academy, just twelve miles northwest of Pittsburgh, has not even begun his junior season yet, but he already knows he has had enough of the recruiting process.

“I plan on committing in September,” says the highly mature Droney. “I want to make sure that there is a spot open for me at the school I want to go to. I talked to (Pitt assistant coach) Tom Herrion and he said they were recruiting a lot of guards in my class and that it was best not to wait. I love Pitt. I’m not saying I’m going to go there, but if that’s my choice then I have to do it now. My high school coach and AAU coach agree with me.”

While you won’t see Droney yet on many top 50 lists that will change when more people see him. He has played in obscurity somewhat this summer, playing offsite in Las Vegas and playing in the 16 and under league in West Virginia. But one out of state college coach who saw Droney play in West Virginia had no doubts about Droney’s talent, saying, ”He’s definitely top 50 and could be higher when he becomes a more consistent three point shooter”.

The other school he is considering is Wake Forest.

Another guard for the 2010 class that Pitt has been after for some time is Isaiah Epps.

Currently, Maryland and Pitt are in the lead to land the talented Garden State star. Saturday night at the Summer Shootout at Allentown (NJ) High School, Epps actually wore Pitt basketball shorts.

“My cousin goes to that school, Travon Woodall,” said Epps when asked if wearing Panthers’ gear indicated anything in particular. Does Jamie Dixon’s squad have an advantage over Maryland and others because Woodall is already in the fold?

“Oh no, I just like the school,” Epps told Alex Schwartz. Isaiah is high on Pitt “because they [are in the] Big East and I want to start. They told me I can start as a freshman.”

Epps, who is being recruited by former Pitt star and NJ Playaz alum Brandin Knight for the Panthers, would likely be fine coming in and starting right away, as he is older than his grade would indicate.

Epps is already 18. Right now, the combo guard is 6’2″, but apparently there are expectations of another growth spurt to put him closer to 6’4″ in a year or two.

Pitt wants to add another big man for the 2009 class, and apparently this one has been getting a lot of attention.

Talk about a kid whose stock has risen in the last month or two. Jordan Williams, a 6-foot-8 power forward/center from Torrington High (Conn.), has offers from Villanova, Marquette, Maryland, Georgetown, Providence, Pittsburgh and Penn State. Wake Forest is also in the mix.

It must have. WIlliams is only a 1-star PF on Scout.com. Rivals.com has 3-stars by him. ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc. (Insider subs.) hasn’t updated their point score for him but does seem to note that he has a lot of potential.

Williams has good size and strength, which he uses to wreak havoc in the post on both ends of the court. He uses his size to carve out deep position in the post for rebounding and scoring close to the basket. Williams, despite his size, runs the floor reasonably well and will finish in transition, keeping up with the smaller, quicker guards. He rebounds in traffic very well, and extra contact does not seem to bother him most of the time.

They say he needs to work on his conditioning and footwork. His size is listed anywhere from 6-8 to 6-10 and his weight is around 240-250.

Clyde only offered the cop $20? Even back in 1999 that was WAY cheap.

Has anybody else not received their football tickets yet? I am getting a little worried. I didn’t think it would take more than three days (Fri, Sat, Mon) to mail something from Oakland to the North Hills.

Comment by AJ 08.18.08 @ 9:33 pm

Droney going to pitt is unreal I’ve seen him play before and I have a close friend that is better than him who is not even getting looked at. I guess getting “held back” in 8th grade helped him a bit. Honestly, I don’t believe he is good.

Comment by Rob 08.18.08 @ 10:38 pm

AJ, I live in Franklin Park and got mine on Saturday.

Comment by Ann 08.19.08 @ 12:14 am

to me its amazing Vontego can’t get a coaching job after all this penance time. Here we are in a country where one of the two major parties thought it was great to have Larry Flynt on their side & hunting down smut rumors against the other party’s candidates. And that same hypocritical party that loves Larry Flynt runs most of the nation’s universities… Go figure!

Comment by IronmanEE68 08.19.08 @ 12:36 am

AJ,

I started a huge thread on tickets over at the scout site…i live in allegheny county too, and haven’t gotten mine. I asked, and it turns out we’re not alone. There are tons of people in allegheny county (and elsewhere) that still haven’t gotten theirs.

At the same time, there are people in as far away as north carolina that HAVE gotten theirs. I’m pretty sure they didn’t mail all the tickets on thursday, they probably just “started” mailing them then.

I usually get my basketball tickets in one day too.

I even called today, and they assured me everything was fine.

And i know they didn’t mail them “best to worst” cause my seats are in 109, 10-15 rows back. Who knows what they’re doing.

Comment by Stuart 08.19.08 @ 4:56 am

I live on the southside (a mile from Oakland!) and my tickets ALWAYS take longer than expected

Comment by Jamie H 08.19.08 @ 9:08 am

Never heard vonteego had problems, sure your not thinking clyde “the glide” vaughn”

Comment by Kurt 08.19.08 @ 3:13 pm

Got the tickets today.

Comment by Stuart 08.19.08 @ 4:22 pm

Rob,

Who is your friend who is so good? Maybe if you give him some pub on here Pitt will look at him.

Comment by D.A.C. 08.19.08 @ 4:53 pm

Rob,

Your friend must be unreal because I’ve seen Droney play a number of times in both AAU and high school and have seen no one anywhere near his level of all around ability. He has every tool you need to be a quality player and the mentality to take the next leap.

Comment by Huuh 08.20.08 @ 4:40 pm

Stuart, you were right. I got my tickets today and the stamp says they were mailed yesterday, almost one week later than we were told. I’m just glad it all worked out.

Comment by AJ 08.20.08 @ 9:57 pm

My friend’s name is Corey Bellovich and I’m sorry, your nuts if you think Droney is amazing. While I know one-on-one doesn’t determine who’s better in a team game, Corey beat Droney 11-1 and Droney wouldn’t even play him anymore.

Comment by Rob 08.21.08 @ 12:03 pm

Rob…. urban legend

Comment by PittFan76 08.21.08 @ 2:37 pm

When did Droney and Bellovich play? I guess Coach Dixon and the rest of the coaches who have offered Droney don’t know as much as you do! Bellovich can’t even dribble with his left-hand!

Comment by Joe 08.21.08 @ 2:39 pm

Hey, it’s just an opinion that’s how I feel. If a couple years from now I’m wrong I’ll admit it. Why would I lie about them playing if he didn’t beat him that bad I wouldn’t think he was better. Just because he’s getting recruited well doesn’t mean he’s gonna be great.

Comment by Rob 08.21.08 @ 10:16 pm

When’s the last time you’ve seen him play? And when did this “game” with Bellovich supposedly happen? Maybe he was able to strong-arm Droney a few years ago (Droney has grown from 6′ to 6’5″ since his frosh year). But if you know anything about hoops and compare the two now, it isn’t even close. Does Bellovich even play AAU? I’d like to see what he could do in a national tourney against real players.

But you are entitled to your opinion… I guess he’s your next Dapper; “high-D1” to not seeing the field at Cal.

Comment by Joe 08.21.08 @ 10:56 pm

Rob,

People from KO are always pissed and jealous because the best athletes in their district play at Seton or another Catholic or private school. Look at Bruce and Gino Gradkowski, or Droney’s older brothers. KO always disappoints in sports and kids who want a better education and to play more competitive high school sports go elsewhere. Seton has had numerous Division 1 players, especially in football and baseball. What has KO had?

Comment by III 08.22.08 @ 8:56 am

I’m not jealous of anything. I just have a hard time believing that Droney could start/play for a top 5 team in college. About the Seton thing, yes that’s true fortunately they are in the same section this year and will get to play. And I’ll say this again if I’m wrong I’ll admit it. Oh and Joe you make it seem as if Dapper sucked at football. It came down to him and Palko for a scholarship at Pitt. Whoever played better at there camp was gonna get the scholarship. Palko got it, Dapper felt he played better. That’s just how it goes.

Comment by Rob 08.22.08 @ 5:41 pm

Rob, you just exemplified how little you know about sports. It came down to Dapper and Palko for a schollie at Pitt? HAHAHAHA you mean the Dapper who couldn’t cut it at Temple, one of the worst D-1 programs in the country? The Dapper who then couldn’t even make it at Cal? Give me a break. Pitt NEVER seriously considered him. Go drink so more KO juice that Kambo loves spreading around.

And, since you failed to answer any of the questions I posed before, when have you seen Droney play? Do you go to AAU tourneys? Or are you basing this off a playground game?

Comment by Joe 08.24.08 @ 4:05 pm

I’ve seen him play twice once this past year and once the year before. I don’t think he is very good. And I don’t think Kambo is a good coach anyway. I don’t remember who he played in those games. Let me guess your a sports genius, right. Answer this question, do you really think he can play at a high D-1 level and succeed?

Comment by Rob 08.24.08 @ 6:25 pm

Yes I know he can play at a high D-1 level and excel. Would teams like Wake Forest and Pitt offer if they didn’t think so? Pitt has 1 offer for 2010… does that tell you anything? I’m interested to see why you think he isn’t that good. Shooting? Dribbling? Passing? Did you see a HS game or AAU? He’s played the best in the AAU circuit and excelled; he plays out of position in HS while being triple-teamed, and still lights up the scoreboard. I guess you know more than Coach K or Gaudio or Jamie.

Comment by Joe 08.24.08 @ 8:22 pm

first of all,Corey bellovich and tom droney are two completely different players. and yes The game between corey and tom did happen and yes rob was right the outcome was 11-1. Even though Droney is being so highly recruited, Bellovich is just as good physically and skillfully, droney is a little better mentally. Plus if droney was going into his senior year this year like he should be, or if he went to Keystone Oaks do you think he would be as highly recruited????? I dont think that would be the case at all. But dont get me wrong Tom is an excellent player, i used to play with him all the time, in fact the most amazing thing Ive seen him do was when he went up for a dunk at wilson park in greentree and broke the hoop. But I also Witnessed Bellocich win a dunk Contest at albright college this summer. Corey is still improving as a player, I dont know if it is the same for droney. All I can say is that Corey is a better and more explosive athlette and I would take him over droney at this point in time.

Comment by matt 08.30.08 @ 7:13 pm

Oh yeah And G-Dap deserves alot more credit than you are giving him. I dont know who you are joe but i dont think you should talk if you dont know the whole story. Dap and palko were competeing for a scholarship. Dap led the eagles to win the pitt passing camp in 2002, but palko still got the scholarship, Unfortunate I know, and it does help a little if your dad is won of the best coaches in the area. Dap didnt leave temple because “he coulnt cut it”, but for a few reasons first off he and the o-coordinator didnt get along very well and second he diidnt like the campus,(if you know anything, then youll know tht temple is located in some pretty bad parts of Philadelphia. and another thing, dap didnt transfer to cal just becaue, he did talk to other D-1 programs about transferring, but he went to Cal because his brother was playing there as well as JOe-Joe Lamondae, another KO grad.

Comment by matt 08.30.08 @ 7:26 pm

And Bellovich is getting quite a few looks, just not any offers

Comment by matt 08.30.08 @ 7:29 pm

yet

Comment by matt 08.30.08 @ 7:38 pm

Oh, please. KO sports are an embarassment. Dapper was NEVER getting a scholarship to Pitt with Palko and Getsy going there. He couldn’t even hack it at Cal… Bottom line.

Comment by III 09.02.08 @ 3:08 pm

Bellovich and Droney are both good players in their own right. They both bring different talents to the table.

Comment by Nick 09.21.08 @ 3:58 pm

alrite i need all u dudes 2 listen up…none a y’all prolly ever hooped in all ur lives before, not sayin im the shit but im gettin DII and DIII looks and was at a camp up RMU this weekend. Both Droney and Bellovich were there and i gotta say that for offers like Pitt, Texas and Wake Forest the dude aint that big time. Think bout it. I played with and against dudes like Pryor, Baldwin and Pope and Blair and they are all way better than Droney. Just put it into perspective ppl. Droney didnt come off 2 impressive where Bellovich did seem like a more explosive player and better raw athlete who still can develop. Not sayin Bellovich should have mad offers, but Droney is overhyped. And how bout all y’all stop hatin on dudes, specially when y’all probly aint never done shit in ur lives athletically. As far as Droney and Bellovich they both can definately ball, and Matt’s rite, 2 diff positions, but i dont think either of them are the caliber of the players I brought up, da type of explosive athlete that gets thos DI type offers

Comment by annonymous 09.26.08 @ 6:00 pm

how can u even say seton is a better athletic and academic school?? ko has been at the very bottom of aaa forever and has gotten beat but has had very good teams. and to name d1 players form ko ? are u a dumbass chris jacobson all american linemen myles caragein pitt player ? name one army all american that went to seton ? ko went 2nd round in the playoffs in 2006 with 3 kids away if not under from aa kicking teams asses with double their enrollment. ko is now aa and will show you how much different they are in their true allignment. also seton recruits and its bullsh*t and every one knows it. i cant even remember the last time seton beat ko in a basketball game seton fans don’t even show up to the games.

Comment by annonymous 2 10.01.08 @ 9:04 pm

also kambos juice? maybe you got that confused with actually lifting hard and getting in shape.

Comment by annonymous 2 10.01.08 @ 9:07 pm

Ok, first off Rob get off bellovich’s n*ts. I kno hes your boy but your not bein unbiased. He’s an ok basketball player when u compare him to college bound hoopers plain and simple. In college he is a 3 guard but cant dribble as well as he needs to be a dII let alone a DI player. If he was smart he would have focused on football b/c the odds of a raw 6’3 somewhat athletic cannon armed qb getting an offer are a lot higher than a white 6’3 decent handles, ok shot gettin a look in D1 hoops. That right there is fact based purely on scholarships available. (when i say decent and ok i’m comparing to college bound players, not the kid at the end of the bench in high school) Secondly to say he is better in any aspect of basketball b/c he beat droney in a one on one game is absurd. If you have seen droney play or have read anything about him you would kno that his number one attribute is his passing ability. In your defense kids do get over looked but in Bellovich’s case there is more to it than that. Droney is a solid 6’6 bellovich is 6’3. You cant teach height. So what if Droney got held back? Smart move by his parents, but dont act like Bellovich isnt old for his grade either because he is. He isnt some stellare student who is graduating at the age of 16. Thirdly, Droney is light years ahead of bellovich mentally, he is able to handle the preasure where sometimes bellovich simply loses it. So there are the intangibles as to why droney is gettin looks and bellovich isnt. A program will get you bigger stronger, faster, more explosive but Droney simply posses a multitude of things that you cannot teach a player.
Issue number 2. To say that seton is a superior school to KO is abusrd in any aspect academically or athletically. We will start with academics. Seton is an underfunded private school that doesnt have the funds to create an academic program that can even be compared to Ko’s. Keystone oaks has more Ap classes than seton and just because there are a lot more f*** ups in the KO district than in the seton “bubble” doesnt indicate that their education is better. Education is what you make of it and KO definetly provides that oppurtunity to its students and it does so more of an extent than seton does. Setons students have parnts that will shell out 10k a year for their hs education and therefore would shell out the money for a college degree too where as the ko students do not all have that luxury and sadly college isnt an option. Enough about academics tho. Seton played AA football and dominated by recruiting athletes that should have been going to ko so they got aaa talent and played in aa. To say ko athletics are an embarssement is also rediculous. As someone stated earlier about Ko’s football team being teribly out numbered but still beat on teams is amazing. ANY aa football team that played aaa would get smoked like ko did, even your beaver falls and aliquippas because football is dictated by your line. In aa the lines are smaller and the depth is not as deep as aaa but when you get to aaa the size of the lineman and the number of lineman are what seperate the two classifactions. Everyone has skilled players, but the great teams have a line. Ko is finally in their rightful classifcation and are murdering teams. Seton had 7 good players. bill stull, carmen connoly, anthony doria, and joe and ralph delsardo and the gradkowkis. Out of those players only 3 of them were truely d1 and this is shown by the impacts that had at the colleigiate level. Carmen has yet to see the field and was over hyped and joe delsardo got lucky at pitt b/c there was no one else. Ko has produced their share of big time football players as well. The dapper issue has been discussed but also Chris jacobson was an all american. Seton does not have one of those. Myles caragein, Kane waller, Nick Bradway, Mike Cosnatnzo, and even brad francus at navy. its ko’s turn now and everyone will finally b forced to give them the credit they deserve because they are playing on an even playing field with teams of the same size. Kamberis is also a great coach. I give him all the credit in the world for hanging in there through all of the losses. Not many coaches would do that but he runs a class program and his teams are always ready play and this is finally they hear that are physicaly capable to carry out the plan and finsih. Other ko athletics programs dominate seton. Look at the basketball team. Ever since they began playing in ’05 seton has gotten their asses handded to them every year. Setons “hay day” is over and everyone will see where they stand when compared to ko….second rate.

Comment by annonymous 10.01.08 @ 9:33 pm

First of all, lets tell the truth here. Public schools recruit just as much as Catholic schools. How do you think Blackhawk wins year in and year out in football and basketball? Before you get so pissed about Seton, why don’t you get all fired up about Blackhawk stealing kids like Brandon Cheatham and Dante Calabria? The reason is because KO has always played second fiddle to Seton. For 40 years Seton was better than KO in almost every sport and KO was pissed about it because they had more kids. For a long time Seton could have been AA in basketball, but chose to play up in AAA. Now, with their enrollment, they could be A, but they chose to play AA for better competition. KO might beat them this year, but they will have to do it for the next 25 years straight to make it even. As for the great athletes that have gone to Seton versus KO, its not even close. Ever heard of Jim Sweeney, Kevin Salvadori, or Suzie McConnel? Not to mention Matt Rogers another D-1 quarterback. You could make a definite argument that the immediate future of KO football is brighter than Seton’s. KO is having a great season, while Seton looks like a .500 team this year, but to say that KO historially has been better than Seton at any sport, with the exception of wrestling, is pretty ridiculous.

Comment by Anonymous 10.02.08 @ 9:18 am

First of all public schools do not recruit nearly as much as public schools. You cant even compare the two in that aspect. Brandon Fus-Cheatam did live in the KO district, but it was his fathers descion to MOVE to the Blackhawk school district. What I am saying is that when you are a private school and control you enrollment and you recruit your athletes, that creates an unfair situion. You are right, their sports may have been better, but it was due to unfair practices taking athletes from the KO district. These athletes would have improved a ko team that was boarderline AA playing in a highly talented conference. Seton was then able to play with inflated talent levels due to recruiting and this is the essence of their success. All I am saying now is that since KO is now AA they will b competeing on the same level as seton la salle. This will create a situion that will no longer allow athletes to be “stolen” through recruiting and the KO, Seton rivalry will no longer be a hypothetical situation like it once was and the two teams will fight it out on the field year after year and it appears that it is going to be a lopsided rivalry, especially once seton’s recruiting edge is lost completely. My whole point is that you can’t take a historical approach to this because of the variables involved, ie recruiting and the inflation of talent in a AA school by recruting the athletes from a AAA school district.

Comment by annonymous 10.03.08 @ 3:34 pm

Kambo is a bad coach…he didnt “hang” thru all the losses, he tried goin to Baldwin…he was stuck at KO thru the losses cuz no 1 wanted him

oh yea…and droney didnt break the hoop dunkin…he broke the hoop hangin on the rim like a stupid white boy wit no dunks n e way…not that it shows skill or anything at all anyway???

I enjoy reading your Ebonics. It makes me laugh, but it really is pretty sad. What are you going to do when you can’t even get hired at Burger King?

Comment by Anonymous 10.06.08 @ 11:33 am

I know a guy who was an assistant coach at Aliquippa and Beaver Falls for more than ten years. He confirmed to me that many seasons half of the football team didn’t live in Aliquippa, but instead used addresses of friends or relatives who actually lived in the district so they could play football there. Some of them actually lived in Ohio. I also had a friend who went to Trinity HS and was a pretty good football player there. He told me that many, many kids who actually lived in Trinity SD did the same thing and used friends and relatives addresses, etc. in order to play for Wash HS, which had a much better program then. The same thing goes on at any good public school program like Blackhawk, Thomas Jefferson, Mt. Lebanon, etc. If that isn’t recruiting, then I don’t know what is. So, actually you are 100% wrong, public schools recruit just as much, if not more than Catholic or private schools who get much more scrutiny in transfers, etc. and have the disadvantage of having high tuition rates that most people can’t afford…

Looks like KO is still a disappointment. Even in a down year, Seton still has their number…

Comment by Rebel 10.25.08 @ 12:21 pm

first of all seton did have a good game their defensive line dominated the game. but how do ju say down year when the whole line graduates and ko’s line is all jr’s? i guess we will have to see next year, but a good win by seton

Comment by annonymous 10.25.08 @ 12:30 pm

Well, considering that Seton got crushed by Sto-Rox, a team that KO killed, I would say that KO losing to Seton was a huge disappointment for KO. Seton’s line is very dominant, but their offense is nothing like it has been in the past…
