That Startling Bounce

It really is remarkable how much of a bounce Pitt and Coach Wannstedt seemed to have gotten in recruiting with the contract extension and upsetting WVU. Up until then, there had been only a couple commits (and one reneged shortly thereafter I think) during the season itself. The speed with which players committed after the season almost seems to suggest that while Pitt was in on all of these players (and others); the players while interested, were looking for something to show that, yes the team and the coach are heading in the right direction.

Beating WVU was the spark needed. That has to be exceptionally galling for WVU right now. Not only did losing to Pitt cost them the national championship game, but it also reignited Pitt’s recruiting in what had appeared to be the point where Pitt’s on the field performance the last couple years was catching up to them. Scout.com and Rivals.com have had Pitt shoot up the recruiting rankings past WVU in the past week to #22 and #21 respectively while WVU is at #30 and #27.

Here’s a little on JUCO QB Commit Greg Cross from Rivals.com.

“I just got back from Pittsburgh, and I wanted to let you know that I committed to Pittsburgh on the visit,” Cross, the nation’s No. 49 junior college player, said. “I love Dave Wannstedt. He really helped me feel at home. He was telling me the truth about how I can come in there and compete.

“He said none of the jobs are given to the kids there and that I’ll have to earn it. He told me how it was really, and I appreciated that. They want a hard worker, and that’s what I wanted to hear.”

Cross, who was offered scholarships by Kansas State and Louisville, said he isn’t expecting to come in and get the starting nod right away, but he also felt like there is a chance for him to compete.

“They told me it’s open,” Cross said. “Whoever comes in and takes over will be the starter. I know I have to come in and learn system. I don’t expect to get anything handed to me. I know I’m going to have to work hard and compete.”

ESPN’s recruiting blog was impressed with the haul in the last week and the overall class being put together. Obviously the focus was on Jonathan Baldwin, who was listed at #24 in their ESPN Hot 150 (Insider subs.).

In fact, coach Zmijanac stated that many college coaches were comparing Baldwin’s exciting size-to-speed combination to New York Giants wide out Plaxico Burress during spring evaluations. We see the similarities, but also see a 6-foot-6, 230 pound athlete whose lean body should explode in a fulltime college strength training program. The hands, athleticism and straight-line speed after the catch are evident, but so is the good initial pop and strength as a drive blocker. He will need to continue building up his body to produce in the trenches at the next level, but the surprising power and physicality are there to mold.

Aside from possessing good — potentially great — blocking skills, we do not see the sharpness and fluidity as a route runner or the speed and elusiveness needed to consistently separate from Division I cornerbacks as a potential college receiver. His game resembles the play of a basketball forward (his winter sport), which in our analysis is more suited for matchups in the passing game on linebackers. Regardless of position, Baldwin’s great versatility and rare blend of size and speed as an athlete should help him develop into a great college football player.

Pitt is quietly assembly a good class despite coming off a disappointing 5-7 season.

They highlight Chris Burns and Lucas Nix who are ranked #106 and #119 in their top-150 (and by coincidence as the 13th ranked RB and OL respectively). They also seem to like Tino Sunseri who they say is “right outside the ESPN 150.”

Everything on ESPN recruiting is a complete joke. Go with rivals and scout.

Did anyone else catch the lengthy discussion of Pitt recruiting and specifically Jonathan Baldwin on Gorman’s blog? He sounds like an impressive young man on top of being an impressive athlete.

I am looking forward to seeing these kids in action over the next few years. There is a lot to be excited about at Pitt… As long as Pederson doesn’t turn us back into “Pittsburgh” I am really looking forward to see both the football and basketball teams progress. Heck even the ladies hoops are improving (despite a slightly disappointing start this year).

I think that we are going to be wearing out the bulbs on those victory lights on the Cathedral over the next few years.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Tom 12.12.07 @ 12:18 pm

I think Pederson is smart enough to stay away from the ridiculous “Pittsburgh” thing. I think he understands how pissed-off a lot of people were about that. I’m confident it’s PITT to stay. On the topic of names, uniforms, etc:
Did anyone else thing our new away uniforms were a 50000% improvement over anything in recent memory. PITT looks like they have their own identity in those uniforms- it’s a nice change. I’m still not sure about the all-blue home uniforms, but I think their an improvement over the past couple years.

Comment by Dan35 12.12.07 @ 12:28 pm

I mean- “they’re” an improvement…

Comment by Dan35 12.12.07 @ 12:29 pm

now that the uniforms have been brought up, i still like the script logo and colors from before. Although, i think this years uniforms had been the best since they changed them. i was actually a fan of the yellow shirts and blue pants.
LET GO PITT!!!

Comment by brian 12.12.07 @ 12:39 pm

About the uniforms:

I expect a compromise between the new and old — A script Pitt with the current blue and gold. Similar to what Palko had on his helmet in the senior bowl.

Comment by ME2001 12.12.07 @ 1:02 pm

Maybe this should be the compromise:

For away games:

For home games:

Comment by Dan35 12.12.07 @ 1:07 pm

thats a nice compromise dan, nothing would be better than seeing those uniforms again for home games..That is the Pitt identity.

Comment by brian 12.12.07 @ 1:42 pm

I doubt they would have two different schemes. Just go all script it is so sick.

Comment by Chris 12.12.07 @ 1:49 pm

Yeah.. i just dont understand pitt and their uniforms. Everyone and their brother wants the old script unis brough back… They have been screwing with us for the last ten or so years by trying to see how gay they can continue to make our uniforms.. First it was a symbol that was a bunch of lines and kinda resembled a weird cat.. Now it is a modified symbol that resembles a hybrid dog/cat…
Steve Pederson all you have to do is make one change and we wont have to have the constant switching the uniform up, and that is going back to the script uniforms that EVERYONE wants

Comment by Adam 12.12.07 @ 2:50 pm

If they go to the script they can never change it again. That is why they aren’t doing it. They can milk more money from fans with these worthless modifications every year. The script is simple and is really hard to tweak, unless you mis-spell Pitt.

Comment by Joey D 12.12.07 @ 3:03 pm

I heard a rumor that Walt Harris is “the front-runner” for the Atlanta Falcons HC job…i did not make this up, this is what i heard…a rumor…and i think it’s hilarious…

Could you imagine the quick-kick on 3rd down in the NFL?

Comment by Stuart 12.12.07 @ 3:16 pm

I’ve always heard that the script insignia is owned by the university as a whole and the current logos are owned by the athletic department. As long as the athletic department does not get 100% of the proceeds from script merchandising you won’t see it.

Comment by Kevin 12.12.07 @ 3:46 pm

The script would not look cool on the basketball uniforms. Additionally, we have been much more successful on the the hardwood in the new uniforms. The football unis this year were actually pretty nice, especially the away one. All of my friends and family think I’m crazy, but I love that space cat. I don’t know why.

Comment by Omar 12.12.07 @ 4:02 pm

The Panthers can dress in all pink with yellow stripes if they win a national championship.

Let’s focus on getting back to a bowl game first.

Comment by Brian 12.12.07 @ 4:21 pm

Amen to that, but the uniform does matter to the program to a certain extent. I’m not saying it makes the team better or worse, but it’s just good to have a trademark look. You aren’t going to see USC, OSU, Nebraska, ‘Bama, etc. getting new gimmick uniforms every other year. I just want Pitt FB to look good on TV next winter…

good point on the B-ball uniforms Omar- script would not work there

Comment by Dan35 12.12.07 @ 4:42 pm

I guess that is a good point omar..
If you guys are into recruiting i HIGHLY suggest getting rivals. i got a short time ago and it is awesome. The fans are really good on the message board. there is always good stuff on there. The admins will answer questions on aim or email all the time.. They love to answer questions.
Now that my marketing is over i just talked to one of the admins on aim.. i have been saying that Pitt is getting vaughn for a while, but he feels that vaughn might go elsewhere. I dont know, but the recruiting seems to be changing each day.

Comment by Adam 12.12.07 @ 6:46 pm

The script insignia is not owned by the university. The AD gets 100% of the merchandise it sells.

Comment by bwh05 12.12.07 @ 6:48 pm

PSU has used a single trademark look for ever. All that shows me is that they’re boring and stubborn just like that crusty coach of theirs.

I liked the look of this past season’s uniforms and I would expect to see a similar scheme for the next few years. I really liked the gold unis, to me that is the real throwback look.

I’m a huge proponent of the block letter PITT. It is just the classier logo and it represents the university and the team very well. Take nothing away from the script, though… the script is real cool, but dated.

Comment by ChrisA 12.12.07 @ 6:56 pm

I like the block PITT better than the script. It really pops on TV. But I like the old color scheme better than the current ND knock-off. I particularly hate that gold helmet that so many other teams use as well. The comprimise for me is the block PITT with the Dan Marion Sr year (royal blue, bright yellow) color scheme. If we have to play in a stadium with bright yellow seats, can’t we at least have that color in our uniform?

Comment by HbgFrank 12.12.07 @ 7:14 pm

Our name is like gas prices.

When it was $2 they jacked it to $4, so when it they brought it back down to $3, we were like “thank god!”

Started at Pitt, changed it to god-awful PITTSBURGH, knowing they could just drop it back to PITT – and knew we would stop complaining ’cause at least it ain’t PITTSBURGH.

I say go with the script and new colors. But i really don’t mind the PITT look (see, it worked on me).

And yes, this would all be irrelevant if we won a NC. But we haven’t, so it is.

Comment by Stuart 12.12.07 @ 7:22 pm

I seem to recall (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong) that one of the things liked in 1997 about the new design was that the Athletic Department created a universal image for ALL of our sports. Not like I was paying attention to Pitt baseball at the time, so I don’t know how true that was or was not.

But, so far I only see a pining for script amongst the football fans. No archive photos or Photoshopped images of the bball team in script ever pop up here. Possible it is that limited appeal that is causing some of the reluctance on the part of the Athletic Department?

Just a random thought, really. Could be nothing at all.

P.S. How does our baseball team look this year?

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 12.12.07 @ 8:32 pm

Go to ESPN and play that bracket game. You can load sixteen teams into a college champioship and the computer does a round by round winner. WVU trumps OSU many times. I actually placed them in a way that Cincy got into the National Championship. Your limited to the teams they allow you to select. No PSU or PITT.

Comment by Ironhead 12.12.07 @ 8:42 pm

Anybody got info on the Shady – Pryor get together in Oakland. Is this true or another “From my sources who is the brother, sister, cousin of a guy who got cut from the band” statement.

If DW lands Pryor, I will grow a stache for the first game. Heck, I’ll feed my girl steroids so she grows a stache.

Comment by Ironhead 12.12.07 @ 8:45 pm

I think we should all grow staches for the first game anyway.

Comment by Dan35 12.12.07 @ 9:13 pm

GROW THE STACHE

Comment by pittisFOreal 12.12.07 @ 10:44 pm

The Pitt script looked fine on the uni’s during Paul Evans era. Especially on players like Charles Smith and Jerome Lane.

(The tighty-whitey shorts excepted)

FWIW I vote for the script and colors of 1976. Our greatest year. Our best player (perhaps until now).

Yes, perhaps this is all irrelevant. I always felt silly wasting time commenting on it. But I’ve just come to the conclusion that Stuart is right. Who is anyone to tell us what to care about or not care about? It’s all entertainment. If there’s no game for us to be entertained by, we have every right to speculate on this.

However, Joey D above is even MORE right. The administration can print more money for itself by coming out with jackass new logos every 5 years, and STILL sell the “throwback” crap at the same time. Think anybody would buy “throwback DynoCat” shirts and caps?

Comment by geeman2001 12.12.07 @ 10:57 pm

I love this chatter my buddies and I talk about it all of the time (about other school’s unis too)!

I liked the blue pants and white jerseys of the larry fitz years Probably because how he wore it (how he played) just good memories..just like the ones they wore for the 13-9 game..it will always be a fond memory.

I have always been a fan of the script, however, with the exception of the 76-83 years, it actually saw the most loses (% wise that is).

We’ve always been Pitt and I like the current design-just wish we could get a decent panther logo-I haven’t liked any of them.

going to the hs champ games this weekend and then the duke game next week!

go pitt.

Comment by scoocher 12.12.07 @ 11:14 pm

Right on geeman2001. I love those old photos from the 80’s. It reminds me of watching the Panthers play hoops in their Fruit of the Looms. Charles Smith was 6’11” playing in his underwear.

I am a script man myself. That is what I grew up with. But, I don’t care if they leave it so now…just start winning again like the old days.

Comment by Barry 12.12.07 @ 11:16 pm

I’ll grow a ‘stache.

Comment by ChrisA 12.12.07 @ 11:30 pm

Little does Mr. Pryor know how many people will be looking ridiculous after he decides to come to Pitt.

Oh well… count me in.

Comment by Tom 12.13.07 @ 12:35 am

Oh, man, do i love Syracuse. Not only do they embarass themselves on the court – but their ex-players make sure to embarass themselves by running their mouths….

“The Knicks wanted [Demetris] Nichols, a 6-foot-8 rookie from Syracuse, to develop his game overseas. He insisted on going to training camp and was cut by New York in late October…Nichols latched on with Cleveland…[then] Nichols was claimed off waivers by the Bulls…

“Yeah, they (the Knicks) wanted me to go overseas,” Nichols said Monday at the Berto Center. “But I think this is where I belong. I think I’m good enough.”

…The Rhode Island native mentioned there was some sort of mistake on the medical tests he took at the NBA predraft camp and believes that’s why he lasted until the 53rd pick of the draft…

“If I didn’t have the false test, I would have been a guaranteed top-30 pick,” Nichols said.”

Right. And if Syracuse made the tourney last year they would have won it all…

And SU’s gonna make the tourney this year too…hold your breath…please…

The recruits are great and all, but its time to make it into wins and losses. Dave has his guys and recruiting wise he shows us that he is possibly the best in the country. No other guy can recruit what we do with three crappy years. Its time to translate that to wins. I’ll grow my mustache out when pitt goes to its bowl! Im not trying to come down hard on dave either. I really believe his system requires a ton of talent and now that he is finally getting talent we are going to see some good stuff on the field.
I follow recruiting non stop and every year i go into the year as giddy as a little school girl, but my hopes get smashed once Pitt is a few games in… (not going to happen this year)

Comment by Adam 12.13.07 @ 5:13 am

i just said wins and losses… minus the losses from that. its late/early

Comment by Adam 12.13.07 @ 5:14 am

i posted some recruiting stuff on matt’s site. (beliketike.com/) I have been hearing the shady rumors too ironhead. its been going on for three weeks from what i have heard. The guys on rivals say it is from a credible source. The same guy that announced saddler’s decision change.

Comment by Adam 12.13.07 @ 5:33 am

I think the gray sweatshirt that Wanny wore for the Backyard Brawl was very classy and showed the Pitt name proudly…anyone else agree? I have seached the internet to try to purchase the sweat but no one I contacted sells it. It was the name PITT in block lettering over the name Panthers which was enclosed in a rectangle….it should be called the “Wanny Sweat” and all Pitt fans should have one….it brought us great luck that day.

Comment by Ernie the Bear 12.13.07 @ 5:41 am

Speaking of uniforms from the 80s – I watched the Doug Flutie/Bernie Kosar Hail Mary game rerun on CSTV. The half-shirt mesh jerseys—now those were some uniforms.

Comment by Kevin 12.13.07 @ 7:44 am

Ernie:
Those sweatshirts and sweatpants are given only to the athletes and the rest of the department. They’re all around campus – but you’d have a hard time getting your hands on one. It’s a new design too – the old one had the arch logo with no drop shadow and the dinocat. The closest you’ll be able to find is a gray zippered hoodie with blue vertically-arched PITT across the front. There are some other good looks I’m sure you’d like.

I’d personally prefer a blue, gold or white polo with an arch patch for coaches – it’s a good look for decent weather. Then again, I’m not a fan of the Bill Belichick look.

Comment by mjb 12.13.07 @ 11:41 am

Thanks for the info…mjb….only wish I caould purchase the one Wanny was wearing…guess I will have to make a Pitt team to get one….do they take 64 year olds?

Comment by Ernie the Bear 12.13.07 @ 1:16 pm

As a recent grad (last April), I know a lot of the students are buying stuff with the script logo and old colors. I cant recall talking to a single person who liked the new panther head logo, and if Pitt were to go back to the script logo, it would be welcomed with open arms by the student body. Also, every time I check the online team store, there seems to be more and more items in the throwback section.

Comment by Scott 12.13.07 @ 1:42 pm

It’s always about the hat.

The PITT script was always my favorite hat. It just looks better with wear and tear.

This weekend could be huge. One of the best defensive players (i.e. S Hale) PITT has recruited in decades is visiting this weekend. We could have great news Monday. It also appears that Holley might pull the trigger soon.

We recently changed how we recruit. The emphasis was to be decreased in Florida and increased in New Jersey and surrounding areas (i.e. Virginia, NY, Maryland). We now have 9 verbals from PA, 2 from OH, 1 from Maryland, and 1 from KS with a total of 13 commits. Of course our target is on PA players Holley, Sales, and Pryor. What has this shift in tactics produced this year?

Comment by ironhead 12.13.07 @ 2:46 pm

I think that “throwback” is gaining popularity simply because it is that…throwback. This is not just a Pitt phenomenon. This is a product of all sports teams. I say keep the new block PITT and the new colors. There has been too much brand changing over the past several years. Fans are confused. The script PITT has too much of an 80’s flare to me. Keep the block PITT and only bring out the script on homecoming once a year. We can make both sides happy and increase product sales. Problem Solved!

Comment by PantherSig 12.13.07 @ 2:53 pm

By the way, PSUcks only has 4 of 12 recruits from PA. As stated, PITT has 9 of 13 from PA. PSUcks best player from PA is **** Yancich LB from Washington, PA. Ours is ***** Nix & hopefully soon to be ***** Hale. As PITT shifted it’s recruiting to PA & Northeast, PSU has claimed to be a more national recruiter. According to Rivals we landed the #26 Nix, #34 Baldwin, & hopefully #53 hale. PSUcks has #73 Beachum & #93 Shaw.

My point is that we appear to be out recruiting PSUcks. We took McCoy & Berry from The Harrisburg area that they considered their backyard. Justin King came from Gateway & the coach of Gateway is a PSU guy and this year their two top players didn’t even have PSU under consideration (that is ***** Hale & ****Saddler.) PSU has bet the pot on Pryor. I can imagine that Bradley is writing him love letters everyday. To lose Pryor would be devastating to PSU. They will be completely insignificant/irrelevant in PA recruiting. To lose Pryor to PITT would change the football landscape in PA for years. PSU has become what it is from Western PA talent. Now the Western PA talent is staying home. Oh yea, and we beat them last.

Comment by ironhead 12.13.07 @ 3:27 pm

I’ve never bought into the theory that a HS coach steers kids to his Alma Mater – I’m sure it might happen sometimes but you’d think that the kid’s parents would see right through it.
