Nice that Cliff Stoudt has given a verbal to Pitt. Looks like there will be some increased depth at the QB spot in the future.

The euphoria over the final game of the season is reasonable, but it also guarantees little change to the coaching staff despite a crying need.

I’d like to believe that Paul Rhoads has finally learned the value of aggreassive, attacking defenses and that things will be different. The problem for me — beyond a rather calcified and hardened position/bias on this issue — is seeing one-half of a season of that hardly erases the previous 7 1/2. I’d also note that aside from Scott McKillop completely exploding on the scene this season, there was not a whole lot from the linebacker position Rhoads was coaching. Little development and growth there.

In my ideal dream scenario, Rhoads bolts for another DC job or a minor head coaching gig while ostensibly hot. Greg Gattuso gets promoted to DC and still works with the defensive line. Gattuso has really impressed me since coming to Pitt from Duquesne. The D-line has been the strength of the team this season, his development of Romeus and keeping the line strong even after Mustakas went down was impressive.

Paul Dunn still needs to go as O-line coach. It was nice to see the Pitt offensive line really blow the Mountaineers off the line last week, but again, one game does not change the ineptitude and poor play from the rest of the season and prior seasons.

Special teams. Ugh. That’s Charlie Partridge, who is a good recruiter but hasn’t exactly distinguished himself with his coaching. Oh, and he also works with the linebackers.

I’m probably in the minority, but even before the final game, I was and still am fine with Matt Cavanaugh coming back next season as OC. Just too many key injuries and a bad O-line performance to put all the blame on him. I also thought he showed the previous season that he could get more out of the offense. I do think he needs to add more elements of the spread into the offense, and stop trying to instill a completely pure West Coast Offense. He would benefit from visiting some other schools and coaches to pick some brains — Florida, Tulsa, Cal and Arizona State would be on my short list of places to visit.

Here’s something very interesting, via Troy Nunes IAAM, a basic breakdown of recruiting ranking versus performance for college football. Pitt was second biggest underachiever in the Big East behind only Syracuse. This is a blunt instrument, not a fine tool. Nonetheless, it is still instructive and interesting.

Matt Cavanaugh is awful. He wasted Palko while he was here and shut down our O. He was awful with ravens and not much has changed. I would like to see someone who is aggressive on the other side of ball.

Blunt instrument is correct. As the creator noted transfers in or out and injuries are not considered. Among things not mentioned that isn’t being measured is the effect of a few players at key positions can have. For example, suppose a school is very successful at recruiting skill position players but is very poor at recruiting for the LOS. That would cause “underachievement.” Or, the corollary, great players on the LOS are recruited but really awful skill position talent particularly at QB. That would also yield underachievment. Also, average LOS recruits with a few truly outstanding skill position players probably equals overachievement. Overachievement might also result from decent but not outstanding skill position guys with outstanding LOS recruits. None of these results would say overly much about coaching if these factors are ignored–but maybe would say something about adequacy of recruiting (e.g., good overall result on paper–stars galore–but lacking adeauate talent at certain positions.) In other words, it is not enough to have a lot of 3-4-5 star players if you don’t get and retain them at most or all positions–especially at QB and on the LOS. Nevertheless, it is interesting and a more in-depth use of the methodology (factoring in the missing information) would likely yield much more fascinating and accurate results.

Mabe if that thing accounted for minutes played and that kids actual “stars” coming in, it would be more useful. For example, if you have two great freshman and sophomore classes, but you’re upperclassmen are still playing (cause they are bigger and have more experieced – but have less stars) – it has no mechanism to account for things like that. Which is what we have here… It is pretty useless, but if overhauled and someone spent some real time on it, it could be useful.

Oh, and Cliff Stoudt didn’t give his verbal, his son Zack did…

Just sayin….

BTW – I read that he was pissing around in practice and threw a ball 81 yds…i’d love to see video of that…

And i found this out there somewhere…dated 10/22 (stoudt is coming from brady quinn’s HS)…

“Think about this. In his 9th start, Stoudt has 200 more yards than Quinn’s best year, which included 13 games. He need’s 1 TD pass to tie Quinn’s best yr, also 13 games. Quinn was about a 55% passer, Stoudt is hitting 69.5%.”

Good analysis, Wanny will keep Dunn for at least 1 more year, Dunns litmus test is the performance of mainly DW’s OL recruits next season ; CP is on the hot seat and gone after february.

Your an idiot. Rhodes earned another year. We need to build off of this, not change key coaches. The Defensive players believe in the coaches that they have. Give it a rest, next your going to say Dixon needs to go because he can’t get past the sweet sixteen.
