The Tough Finale

Question for those of you with a DVR. Do you find yourself looking down at your car stereo every now and again to stab at the rewind button for something you heard on the news or a particular song, when you miss it? Thinking you can do that just like when watching something on TV. Or is that just me?

Late start today because I promised the wife family time. That led to DVR delayed watching of the Browns-Steelers game. Nothing like watching the wife’s hopes raised and dashed at an accelerated pace.

Anyhow, it’s likely my watching of the Billikens-Panther game tonight may be similarly delayed. Still, here are the articles for today.

A couple recap articles from last night where Sam Young had another good night.

If Pitt junior Sam Young had a trading card, the picture on the front would be of one of his high-flying, acrobatic dunks. After all, Young is best known for his athletic ability and off-the-charts vertical leap.

In an 88-61 victory against North Carolina A&T yesterday at Petersen Events Center, Young, a junior forward, showed off another part of his game, stunning the Aggies with his outside shooting. He paced the No. 22 Panthers (2-0) with a career-high 24 points and added 11 rebounds for his third career double-double.

Young was 10 for 14 from the field and 4 for 6 from 3-point range. The most 3-pointers Young made in a game before yesterday was two. He made 13 3-pointers all of last season.

“They were leaving me open in transition,” Young said. “They seemed to lose track. The big man would go down to the block instead of meeting me up top. I took advantage of it basically.”

And this.

Not to disappoint, he obliged the crowd of 9,034 with a soaring, breakaway dunk to cap a 16-0 Pitt run that turned a close game into a rout, 34-17, with 4:23 to play in the first half.

“That run kind of broke the game loose,” North Carolina A&T coach Jerry Eaves said.

Pitt freshman center DeJuan Blair played only 15 minutes while in foul trouble, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds. Mike Cook had 13 points and five assists, and Levance Fields added seven points and five assists without a turnover.

Of course the A&T coach was a little strange in one of his post-game comments.

“If he continues to hit his perimeter shot, he will be a tough matchup,” Eaves said. “But the Big East is competitive. Teams like Louisville, they have quite a few guys his size and his athletic ability that will be able to guard him out on the floor when he puts it on the floor. I don’t think he’s a huge matchup problem with the better teams in the Big East.”

Eaves, the starting point guard on Louisville’s 1980 national champion, said Fields is the key to Pitt’s success.

“Fields is not a great shooter. But he gets in the gut, and he creates things for them,” Eaves said. “If you have someone who can guard him and stay in front of him without a lot of help, to where people can stay closer to their shooters, I don’t think they are the greatest pure shooters in the country. Just being honest with you.”

You know it sounds like sour grapes, but there is a bit of truth in that. Pitt is very much a point guard oriented team so, yeah, he is a key. And it’s hard to argue that Fields is a great shooter. He’s effective and productive, but I wouldn’t call him a great shooter. That’s not stopped a lot of teams. Ramon is the closest Pitt has to a pure shooter. Really, I’m struggling to think of the last championship team off the top of my head that had a “pure shooter” who was much more than a component as opposed to a central part of the team.

I don’t really have a problem with Pitt being somewhere in the 20s of the preseason top-25. Neither does Ray Fittipaldo. By the way, Dick Weiss of the NY Daily News puts Pitt at #20 in his rankings.

No Big East team has been as consistent as the Panthers, who are counting on 6-7, 265-pound freshman DeJuan Blair to become the next Sam Clancy and replace Aaron Gray in the post. Jamie Dixon is solid everywhere else with veteran guards Levance Fields and Ronald Ramon and underrated wing scorer Mike Cook, who should help make up for a lack of overall size with their scoring and pressure defense.

Now for the St. Louis game, here are the game notes (PDF). Jamie Dixon was strongly influenced by Rick Majerus.

Dixon has known Majerus for 15 years. Many of his coaching philosophies came from Majerus’ Utah teams, while Dixon and Ben Howland were at Northern Arizona.

“He’s been a good friend and a mentor,” said Dixon, who worked Majerus’ basketball camps at Utah and the same NBA camps the past two falls. “His stamp on our program for what we do, is probably the most significant of anybody. No question. With that said, we’ve got to beat him.”

Rick Majerus was all about puffing Pitt.

“(Sunday) is going to be a very difficult game,” said Majerus, who regularly worked Big East games for ESPN last season. “They’re very good. People talk about Georgetown, but they don’t have (Pitt’s) depth. I’ll take their roster over Georgetown’s for sure. They’re big, they’re athletic, … they’re experienced.”

Uh-huh.

Our shooting has been a bit disappointing. St Louis is very much in this game, so hopefully we come out shooting better. That Husak kid has been kept in check though and Blair had a good half.

About 8:00 nminutes to go up by 10, uncomfortable!

Comment by vito 11.11.07 @ 7:26 pm

A very uneasy win. Young and Blair had a good game but if Fields didn’t play good tonight, we could have lost this.

Comment by Panthoor 11.11.07 @ 7:52 pm

looks like we are in midseason form–control the glass, 50% from the field and foul line (making 8 of our last 12 from the line to get to 50% from our initial 1 for 6–didn’t see the game, but like our ability to make 3pt shot–Gilbert Brown can give us some valuable minutes.

Comment by tph60 11.11.07 @ 7:57 pm

Considering it was the third game in three days, I thought we played pretty well, especially defensively. Blair owned the paint and Fields played extremely well. Ramon needs to get more involved shooting the ball. That is his best skill, therefore we have to find a way to get him some open shots. Hopefully the coaches figure it out. Maybe some penetration from Fields and a kick out will be effective. I really liked what I saw from this team defensively. Much quicker than last year. Frankly, I think we will be a much better team defensively without Gray. That was the weakest part of his game. Blair and Young are much more athletic and quick and can make things happen physically. Gray just couldn’t move laterally.

Comment by Omar 11.11.07 @ 8:19 pm

Glad I watched this game tonight. Impressed aside from the free throw shooting and the fact that we seem to fall into the one-on-one, chuck-it-up mode every few possessions. I’m actually more concerned that we’re not getting to the line as much as we have in the past. I don’t think our team defense is where it needs to be yet, but it’s early.
Playing St. Louis is like looking in the mirror for Pitt. They play smart on offense and defend well. Nobody likes to play a team like that because they’re never out of it.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.11.07 @ 8:21 pm

BTW – Blair is a MANimal. He was five inches shorter than Husak — a senior — yet dominated the matchup. His follow jam on Benjamin’s missed layup was wicked.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.11.07 @ 8:25 pm

We still lack speed in our gaurds. Mainly Ramon, he is slllloooowwww. I would like to see Gilbert get some time over him. Gilbert can shoot with Ramon and his size and athleticism are much better.

Comment by Chris 11.11.07 @ 8:38 pm

Glad to finally see Blair in person. I was impressed. His post moves are better than Gray’s will ever be.

Fields is definitely a step faster. He’ll never be a great shooter, but he’s a clutch shooter. Ramon plays solid D but Omar is right, he has to get more involved. He camps on the arc. I know he is not that quick, but he never even looks at the hoop unless he is wide open.

Was nice to see Brown bury those 3s.

Generally speaking, might be nice to get more production and leadership from our seniors.

Comment by Carmen 11.11.07 @ 9:00 pm

BTW, some random football..Clint Session has just intercepted the ball in the end zone for the Colts. The ball was dead in the end zone but he ran it back anyways and was out of breath..quite funny with the oxygen and everything.

Back to basketball, we can only get better and gel more as a team. Young and Blair are going to be big for us this year. We need Fields and Cook to score double figures as well consistently. If Ramon and or Benjamin score around 10 a game then we’re in business.

Comment by Panthoor 11.11.07 @ 9:12 pm

Ramon is slow and will struggle against the more athletic guards on defense. However, Brad Wannamaker is not slow and neither is Gilbert Brown or Keith Benjamin. If another player is lighting us up at the 2, then we can plug any of those three players out there and shut them down. Ramon will have to accept sitting for a bit if he is getting beat, which will happen eventually.

Comment by Omar 11.11.07 @ 9:13 pm

In fact, I would like to see more of Fields and Wannamaker together. I hope Dixon doesn’t get stubborn and stick with his current rotation of Wannamaker playing only when Fields is not in the game. I don’t think I saw them play together once this weekend. Wannamaker needs to be on the floor, he is an outstanding defender.

Comment by Omar 11.11.07 @ 9:15 pm

Our free throw shooting has somehow gotten worse – i didn’t know that was possible.

We missed a ton of wide-open jump shots – its brutal to watch most of the time. Imagine if we shot like St Louis did – we’d have won this going away.

I know i read that kids work on shooting and FTs in the offseason and what not – but if it isn’t true, or they haven’t gotten any better, i don’t want to hear about it.

And Clint Session has INTs now, but the retard kicker missed it…

Comment by Stuart 11.11.07 @ 11:34 pm

Blair is far more athletic than he looks. He could be a dominating big man before all is said and done.

Panthoor and Omar, while I am sure that Mr. Benjamin is a nice enough kid, and he hustle and plays pretty good d, he cannot shoot to dave his life, save for one or two games a year. If averages more than six points per game this year, Pitt’s going to win the NCAA’s.

Comment by Crackbaldo 11.11.07 @ 11:54 pm

I usually don’t get to see Pitt hoops games until December when they start broadcasting them on ESPN. Bleh….

Congrats to Pitt grad Clint Session! Two big ints tonight.

And I’m even happier that his ints didn’t help his team win so the Steelers have a prayer at a bye week!

9,000 at the game? What’s going on here? Who has those extra 3500 tickets?? Lets get them to the thousands who would love to go to a game.

Comment by Eric R 11.12.07 @ 1:24 am

Where are the “thousands” who would love to go to the game? I’m not sure they exist. There are tickets for sale for every non-conference game, and even if you dont use the Pitt ticket office, tickets are available below face value on the street. So who isn’t going to the games that actually wants to?

Could it be that the demand to watch a Pitt-St Louis basketball game on a Sunday in November is not that great?

Comment by Jamie H 11.12.07 @ 9:04 am

steelers home game i am sure had something to do with the xtra 3500 tickets. you usually get 2 for the price of one earlier in the year.

Comment by Kurt 11.12.07 @ 9:54 am

I think the perception around town is that the Pete is sold out for every game, so it’s not possible to get tickets. Pitt blows countless thousands on futile football advertising in the traitorous PG. They should face facts that in a 8 loss season, nobody outside a few of us here give a flying fish about going to the USF game. Spend that money to advertise the extra basketball tickets.

Comment by geeman2001 11.12.07 @ 11:17 pm

The 3500 tickets I’m speaking specifically of were on Saturday against NC A&T (as pointed out in the article). I think most people realize that a Sunday in the middle of football season may not be the best time for any college basketball game. I’m still amazed that more people won’t go to a Pitt basketball game on a Saturday when the football team isn’t playing. The main agrument you hear from fans who don’t attend football games is due to the W/L disparity (putting it softly). Well, Pitt fans want a winner, and that’s what the baketball team is. There shouldn’t be any excuses in my eyes. Fans shouldn’t make excuses when the team is *winning.* If there are tickets available, geeman’s right, they need to get the word out.

Comment by Eric R 11.12.07 @ 11:30 pm

Any non- Big East game you can get tickets for below face value on the street. (face value is 27.50 a ticket this year)

Not only that, but tickets through Pitt have not sold out, so you can still buy season tickets or individual game tickets through Pitt if you want. Of course Pitt doesn’t want to advertise this, because it makes us look bad after selling out several years in a row.

Comment by Jamie H 11.13.07 @ 12:43 am

UCLA’s arena wasn’t full tonight (looked like Pitt has over the last 3 games) and they’ve gone to back to back final fours. No one wants to see these cupcake teams. It is what it is. And they sell out all the seats they want to sell out – they just hold some back.
