Brief Reads Before the Road

Have to leave soon enough today to get to the ‘Burgh and start some early tailgating. Time to whip through the stories today.

We used to be in Lot 22 before there was construction a few years back and it reduced the parking spaces available. We got shunted to Lot 23, and decided to stay since it was a bit cheaper and they actually have more port-a-johns. Still, we used to always end up parked near the SHAT. They get a nice write-up today. Congrats on 10 years, guys.

There’s that damn knot in my stomach again. Spread offense and DC Paul Rhoads.

Rhoads admitted he is a little nervous about how his defense will respond tonight, not just because the read-option offense can be so tricky, but because he is asking a group of first-year starters at linebacker to play disciplined, assignment-oriented football. Both starting outside linebackers, Shane Murray and Adam Gunn, are converted safeties who have little experience at linebacker.

“I should be nervous,” Rhoads said. “But based on camp, I have a lot of confidence that they’ll be ready to go. I know they’ll have some butterflies and be jittery, early, just like me. But I think they’ll settle down quickly. They are a disciplined group, they are a smart group, and I think the non-experience will become less and less of a factor as the game moves on.”

Yes, because Rhoads coached defenses did so well against spread and read-option with experienced players. Ugh. Pass the Maalox.

Of course, Coach Wannstedt isn’t worried about the youth and inexperience from his team.

The, uh, good news. Eastern Michigan has struggled mightily at time running its own offense. To that end, they have added some 2-TE sets and pro-style formations. Something that Pitt can handle.

Nine hours to game time.

So I got pulled away from the radio feed, but saw on the game cast something about a 74 yard penalty – any idea what happened?

didn’t happen…no idea.

they had 5/45 we had 4/40. No penalty like that.

both game casts I tried were junk. Thank goodness for 3WS. Always was my favorite radio station (and I’m not even kidding).

The best thing about the CSTV was that it covered DW’s press conference live. The rest of it sucks

Comment by TMG Panther 09.01.07 @ 9:22 pm

I saw that as well. The 74 yard penalty reference was just a typo or something.

Man, the radio broadcast was extremely disappointing on Sirius. But more importantly a win is a win.

Is it obivious to everyone barring injury that shady will be the starting tailback by the MSU game. LSH had some plays but not enough to hold shady carries back.

Lets enjoy this win. Have a mini celebration and get back to work for GRambling. We cant take any team for granted- see what happen to michigan

X-rays and MRIs on Stull’s thumb tomorrow….great. Sounds awesome.

If Smith sucks, how long before we replace him with Bostick?

Comment by Stuart 09.01.07 @ 9:30 pm

How much is that CSTV? It actually showed the game in video, not just sound?

Comment by Stuart 09.01.07 @ 9:35 pm

Wannstedt on the postgame interview…

We’ll know more about Stull tomorrow. Fralic asked him if he knew the nature of the injury. Wannstedt said Stull told him he got hit by a couple of EMU players after throwing the ball and one of them grabbed his thumb and yanked it backwards while they were on top of him. That’s part of the reason he (Stull) was apparently pissed when he was running off the field.

For what it’s worth, Wanny sounded resigned that he might be laid for some time because he was very candid when discussing Bostick’s opporunities from here forward. He said Bostick is very much alive and in the mix right now or something to that effect. He didn’t sound optimistic about Stull.

Just wanna go back to Michigan. App. St. is good and yes I’m a Pitt fan, but they would beat us no doubt and they are way better than EMU. Not saying that it isn’t a bad loss, but not as bad as everyone thinks.

Michigan was supposed to be #5 in the nation, best in the big11, and challenging for a national championship.

They couldn’t even win a DIAA championship.

And it was at home. It was a TERRIBLE loss.

Comment by Stuart 09.01.07 @ 10:59 pm

From the stands I noticed that Stull pitched it back to LaRod anf the pitch didn’t make it there, and Stull left the field holding his arm. He went into the locker room, came back with a splint and with ice on it.

McGlynn got in very late, only for a play or 2.

Scott McKillop played a great game.

EMU played the whole game stacking the run and their middle linebacker was very large. Absolutely no holes opened in the first half for running, pass blocking was very OK. 2nd half holes started coming – we wore them out.

As Lou Holtz said the spread offense is the great equalizer. And that offense with speed is difficult to stop no matter who is trying to stop it.

Comment by Rob 09.01.07 @ 11:43 pm

Good for Michigan that they lost, and (strictly in a principle only manner), I almost wish Pitt would lose to Grambling, and all these other turkeys that schedule I-AA crap. It’s inexcusable. Scheduling the game itself is the bigger sin than winning. What a scam job.

Comment by geeman2001 09.01.07 @ 11:54 pm

The bigger sin than losing, I mean. Bah.

Comment by geeman2001 09.01.07 @ 11:58 pm

Lou Holtz is a tool. All his credibility is gone with his incessant blowing of ND. He’s picked them to win the last 10 bowl games, and the game against GTech. How’s that worked out?

Stuart–RE: Better OL play in 2nd half: Per what I heard on the post game shows; The better 2nd half run blocking was partly EMU’s D getting tired and partly that Pitt switched at halftime to “zone blocking” to overcome difficulties with blocking assignments caused by EMU’s DL moving into unexpected sets/allignments.
