A Bit More Turnley

The newest commit, Ryan Turnley, has created a bit of head-scratching over getting a 1-2-star ranking yet have schools like Wisconsin, Louisville and GT being interested. Not to mention being listed in some rankings for top Pennsylvania players.

There is no question that Turnley will be a bit of a project. He’s only been playing football since 8th grade. What the rankings contrasted with the teams that have recruited him reflect is a lot of raw potential. The “kid” is a 6′ 5″ and 295 pounds offensive tackle. Clearly, this is a diamond-in-the-rough type player the Pitt coaches hope to reach. He’s only been a starter at Hopewell for one year.
It helps that Turnley was eager for a Pitt offer.

“Like I said before, I grew up a huge Pittsburgh fan and I told people my whole life that it was my dream to play for the Panthers in college,” Turnley added. “I’ve known Coach (Greg) Gattuso, Coach (Bob) Junko and Coach (Dave) Wannstedt for a long time now and they are all great people. When I went on a visit there this Thursday I was able to sit down and talk with Coach (Paul) Dunn for about an hour and he was a great guy too. They took me around and showed me everything on campus and I liked it even more then I thought I would going down there. I just loved everything about Pittsburgh from the coaches, to the campus to the facilities, it has just always been the dream. I knew I was going to commit there when I left campus on Thursday.”

You look at West Virginia, and their O-line. They have done it with finding players who were overlooked and then developing the potential. Turnley wasn’t being overlooked by coaches and teams, just the recruiting sites because there was very little to go on with him in high school.

How are people making a big deal out of his only playing since the 8th grade? That gives him 4 years of organized football under his belt going into his senior year. Seems like a good amount to me.

The recruiting sites didn’t overlook him. They just didn’t think he was very good. I heard Dokish on the radio about this last night and he said Turnley was only honorable mention in his own conference and didn’t get any offers from schools who saw him on tape. He only got offered at camps when they fell in love with his good feet and big size. In other words, teams fell in love with him during drills but he has never actually shown much during real competition. He said he is a major project, but is worth the chance if he is one of the lesser players in the class.

Excellent point about WVU. As much as I hate them, I must admit they do a great job of finding player that can excel in their system. And its not just the linemen, look at some of the skill players that were not highly rated (Slayton was basically an afterthought). Hopefully the coaches at Pitt will be able to do the same over time.

Only played football since 8th grade? When is he supposed to start?
I can see qualifiying a player’s ability by saying “He only started playing football as a junior” or something, but most western PA schools have football starting in 7th grade, so this kid has only missed one year.
Either way, he’s a monster, he’s got mad skills, and hopefully he can help on the line.

What is the word on Yancich? PSU whe?re he will be lost in the shuffle, MSU that is plastered on his myspace or PITT, with the ability to play early?

I hope Pitt but I beleive it will be PSU for no other reason that he said he made he choice after they offered. My fingers are still crossed and I am pulling for him to wake up.

A monster with mad skills? Talk about exaggerating.

Im glad I came across this while researching Turnley. I happen to know the young man, and I know he can play and as for, anyone who has seen his tapes, HASNT OFFERED? Wisconson, Louisville, Maryland, GT, and the other 7 offers he had, never saw him work out, they offered after they watched his film, full of pancakes, ive seen it. And as for the 1-2 star, its because he never wasted his time or money going to those stupid camps they hold.
