It’s Hokie Season: Pitt-VT Game Thread

Filed under: Uncategorized — Justin @ 5:00 am

3:30 Kickoff at Heinz. ACC Coastal Division is on the line. I’m not telling you what TV station it’s on. If you aren’t at the stadium and you don’t have a damn good excuse, which is mostly “I have to take a plane to get there” or “I unfortunately am reading this from beyond the grave,” shame on you. This is maybe the biggest home game for Pitt in a decade or so.

As Chas pointed out earlier this week, Pitt controls its own destiny. It’s a terrifying thought for any Pitt fan who has paid attention for any period of time. A win vs VT and all the fightin’ Narduzzi’s have to do is beat Wake Forest or Miami for a trip to Charlotte and give every Clemson fan a panic attack. There are other scenarios, but win today and the path is crystal clear.

I’m feeling confident, which is always terrifying as Pitt tends to do better when I expect the worst. Is my confidence well-placed or am I drunk?

Well said Justin, good to see you back again.

Hope springs eternal, but confidence in a Pitt win is never justified till the clock says zero.

These young men deserve a good crowd on senior day, hope they get one. See you all there.

Parkway east down to one lane all weekend at the Greenfield bridge. Those penndot nitters strike again.

Snow fflurries and windy in downtown Pittsburgh on a sunny, game day morning.

Let’s go hunting ffor hokies!

We’re running well against them…looking real good now. Our kicker is a big advantage on a day like this too.

10-0!

Comment by Jackagain 11.10.18 @ 3:59 pm

Hall with 114 yards on 3 carries. Ridiculous… 🙂

This game’s over if Pickett doesn’t fumble on that run…

Comment by Jackagain 11.10.18 @ 4:33 pm

Great and I mean a great win.

If Pitt plays a similar non conference as their ACC peers they are 9/1 or 8/2 and probably a top 15 team. Look at Syracuse, a mild non conference schedule and they are currently number 13, Pitt is better.

H2P

Narduzzi isn’t the idiot nor is Lyke, Watson or Bates.

This is what is SUPPOSED to happen. Pitt is supposed to win the ACC costal. Pitt is supposed to find a weakness and pound hard, western PA style. Love these last two wins. I’m as proud ofthis team as I have been in many years. How great for OlliHallson ! Hail to Seniors. Hail to Pitt.

Comment by LA Panther 11.10.18 @ 7:56 pm

Congrats Pitt, for once we excelled in a big game at home – cold but who cared.
Some thoughts 1) best pickup off season was Borbley followed by the new DB coach as our dbs actually look back for the ball now 2) true on the non con schedule 3) hoopies should be our only good non com, screw playing the nitters ever again 4) hope we crack top 25 though we should be higher than Cuse 5) Pickett better but still room to improve 6) on the 4th quarter sack of VT QB had a Pitt player come in and tackled him while wrapped up by Weaver we would have been penalized – the rule needs modified 7)HIGHEST RUN TOTAL EVER FOR A PITT TEAM 8) did I mention Borbley?
HAIL TO PITT!!!!

From CBS Sports.com: “Pitt: The term “enigmatic” could be used to describe a lot of teams in college football, but Pitt might be the most shining example. After beating Virginia Tech 52-22 and tallying a whopping 492 yards rushing, the Panthers are one win away from securing the ACC Coastal. And yet, Pitt also lost to Penn State and UCF by a combined score of 96-20 while giving lowly North Carolina its only conference victory. Still, there’s a good possibility Pat Narduzzi’s team enters the ACC Championship Game against Clemson at a more respectable-looking 8-4. If you had pegged that a month ago, may I ask for the winning lotto numbers?”

Wake Forest has stunk forever. Figures this year they don’t. Game is still very much winnable. Don’t want to back into championship game…next two will not be cakewalks. Miami didn’t forget last year and a loss to Wake and a couple UVA wins they can return the favor and knock us out of championship game. I believe Chryst won down there, but I don’t remember many other wins in Coral Gables…

Comment by Pap76 11.12.18 @ 2:43 am

I’m enjoying the rushing attack. It’s fun and must be demoralizing to play against.

Classic All-Time Pitt Win that makes my Pre-Season Prediction of a “W” against VaTech look like a MAJOR understatement.

6 Wins and another NOTHING BOWL appearance also looks now like a bit of an understatement.

But here is a little something a certain Poster named “POD” wrote WAY back in August 2014 after a new Chryst Recruit named Quadree made his debut in the first scrimmage of Fall Camp.

… “Ollison showed yesterday why I have pointed to him as the Freshman Back with the potential to be a FUTURE STAR.

To date, Chris James has been the one getting all the publicity and attention. But it seems that is not James but Ollison whose abilities as a Breakaway Threat are translating to the next level.

A BIG BACK with NATURAL ABILITY to “hit the hole” and “run to daylight”… and who is also FAST ENOUGH to “take it to the House.”

I think pretty accurate in retrospect.

Just saw Northwestern made it into AP Top 25 at #24. Same 6-4 record as Panthers but there are some differences:
Common Opponents (Duke, ND): Pitt = 1-1; NW = 0-2
Vs non-Power 5: Pitt = 1-1 (Albany/UCF); NW = 0-1 (Akron)
Record vs current Top 25 teams: Pitt= 1-3; NW = 0-2

For those Chryst “We-would-be-better-off-if-he-didn’t-leave” fans from today’s USAToday.com:

TRENDING TOWARD MISERY

Wisconsin: … At some point, we have to admit that the Badgers haven’t just been bitten by bad luck but that they’ve massively underachieved to be 6-4. Maybe a playoff bid wasn’t in the cards, but the combined record of the teams they’ve beaten is 18-42.

Comment by DionJag 11.12.18 @ 3:07 pm

Chryst only the 3rd Big Ten Coach EVER to win 10 Games in each of his first 3 years.

Always important to balance the USA Today with some facts.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.12.18 @ 4:35 pm

Wisconsin has been forced to play without its Starting Quarterback.

Now Hornibrook has certainly been NO prize, but Backup Coan is about as BAD as they come.

Sure, Chryst is to blame for not having someone BETTER waiting in the wings.

But “Misery”… let’s be at least a little real.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.12.18 @ 4:39 pm

In this day and age of football injuries if you have a mediocre quarterback and a terrible backup, when does the head coach have responsibility? Past 3 years he has been mostly playing with someone else’s recruits. Hornibrook and Croan are both his and he supposedly is a quarterback guru. He couldn’t attract a good quarterback to Pitt and now not to Wisky. His defenses haven’t been much better this year when playing teams with winning records. If it were not for 1-win W. Kentucky and 3-win New Mexico, they would be calling for his head by now.

Comment by DionJag 11.12.18 @ 5:13 pm

I forgot. Wisky does have victories against a 3-win Nebraska and a 1-win Rutgers to point to.

Comment by DionJag 11.12.18 @ 5:20 pm

Glad to hear that unlike Chryst, Narduzzi is doing it with his own Players.

The only thing better will be when Narduzzi starts to make winning 10 Games a habit.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.12.18 @ 6:04 pm

A refresher lesson in recent history: Chryst took over a program from Gary Andersen filled with Gary’s players and recruits that went 9-4 and 11-3. Narduzzi took over a program filled with players and recruits that just went 6-7, 7-6, and 6-6. And guess who provided Narduzzi with that stellar record to build and recruit from? It is one thing to start with a silver spoon and another to have to start with a plastic McDonald”s spork!

Comment by DionJag 11.12.18 @ 9:20 pm

And here one would think such a lesson might at least make mention of Hall, Ollison and some Kid named Taylor.

Or how those Andersen Recruits coached by Andersen lost to Ohio State 59-0.

Seriously, though… some good stuff.

Originally the Chryst Haters here were giving all the credit to Alvarez.

Now, for the first time I’m hearing it was Andersen.

But, the creative writing is appreciated… especially the “spork.”

Comment by PittofDreams 11.13.18 @ 5:09 am

OK, OK I’m done with Chryst and Wisconsin, I was just bored yesterday and thought I’d throw something out to start a dialogue. But if you are willing to give USAToday.com another chance take a look at their analysis of Franklin: 5 reasons why Penn State coach James Franklin is the worst
