Open Thread, Football: Albany-Pitt

3:30 pm, ACC Network Extra/ESPN3.com

Today’s the day.

As usual, you can find me on twitter. You can also find Justin (maybe) doing a little commenting on twitter as well.

I’ve missed this. Sure there’s a little more grumbling each year from my body as I get up early on a Saturday. Get myself together to head out the door before anyone is up in the house.

The lingering feel of summer remains in that the sun is already risen (not to mention being exceptionally warm and humid). In a few short weeks, at best the sun will be just breaking the horizon, the weather will be shifting to colder, wetter weather. But for now, oh, it is beautiful.

Meet up with my friends. Twenty plus years since we graduated. Still getting together for these games. Family. Other cities. We still find a way this time of year.

See you guys there.

Pitt 27-17. (Please don’t “Pitt” this game)

2-Buck – no worries. We’ll see (Pitt) a strong running game, extended drives, lotsa TOP, and a few simple passes thrown in. Nard won’t want to give psux any advance notifications!

Narduzzi enterring his 4th Year at the helm… enjoy it while it lasts.

Does anyone know why I can’t find the game link to watch this anywhere?? I found literally every game across the country except Pitt. I tried ESPN apps, ACC network links. Nothing shows up on the schedule.

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.01.18 @ 11:14 am

You need the ESPN College Sports Package

Ben Dinucci just threw a touchdown strike – James Madison is punching NC State in the face !!!

Comment by Daddylonglegs 09.01.18 @ 11:32 am

Usually it streams online though. Can’t even find it listed anywhere on the coverage schedule. But it’s saying ESPN coverage.

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.01.18 @ 11:41 am

Dinucci is 13 for 13 in the first half !!

Comment by Daddylonglegs 09.01.18 @ 12:05 pm

PITT 35 ALBANY 14. PITT 8-4 and considering the schedule that would be awesome

DiNucci made a wise move in moving on. Still think he was better than most of you gave him credit for.
HAIL TO PITT!!

Comment by RKB 09.01.18 @ 12:42 pm

DiNucci fumbles trying to make a BIG play in NC State’s Red Zone. His STRENGTH is playing loose and taking chances… and sometimes that comes back to STING him.

17-7 NC State at the half. DiNucci 14 for 14 which is keeping JMU in the Game. But only 6.6 average which is NOT going to get it done.

Good test in the 2nd.

James Madison getting HOMERED with spots all Game by the ACC Crew at NC State.

Such is life in College Football.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.01.18 @ 1:12 pm

Pitt D getting shredded until that INT. and of course there’s the missed extra point. 13-0 Pitt

APp State w a 100 yd kickoff return 7-7.

Comment by Dan 72 09.01.18 @ 2:54 pm

Pitt won the game easily. Considering the brutality of the heat (I was in it) I think they did fine. No one did much in the 2nd half. A lot of cramping, slowed everyone down. No harm, no foul.

ON THE OTHER HAND….PSU 38 App. St. 38 at thye end of regulation.

Comment by The Hagen 09.01.18 @ 6:14 pm

Shit…..App St 38 Pedo St 45.

Comment by The Hagen 09.01.18 @ 6:27 pm

A very enjoyable home opener, except for the heat. At least no rain.

Beat Penn State

possible signs for next week (if GameDay shows up in Pgh):

1) Unrivaled? More like Irrelevant!
2) PSU – Pretty Shitty (or Stupid) University
3) If you want to be considered for National Champions, you must first be State Champions. H2P!!
4) Franklins in PA are considered Ancient Founding Fathers, not Lousy FB Coaches.
5) App State – something one might need for their Mac (not a difficult FB team)

Others??

This was a game against a lesser opponent. Nothing more. Nothing less. Pitt did exactly what you would have hoped … especially in the first half.

The offense was more creative than it usually is in a first game under Duzz … but it was all stuff Pitt has shown before … and, as Jay mentioned, not too much in the passing game other than short passes. It gave me hope that we’ll see some new things for PSU.

Bookser was out but the line played pretty well and I don’t remember hearing Houy’s name outside of when he was announced as a replacement for Bookser. When you don’t hear the backups name on the offensive line, it generally implies he played well. Our 3 RB’s all looked good. Olli looks faster. Hall looked like Hall and AJ Davis showed some pizzaz. Our WR corp looks deep. Pickett showed he’ll have some rookie mistakes … he is, indeed, human. It’s good to get knocked off a pedestal once in a while. It builds character.

On defense, they rotated a lot and also played pretty vanilla. Not much disguising of coverages or blitzes. Our two (most likely) starting corners did not play either.

When teams get down like Albany did, they’ll naturally have some more passing yards. The defense definitely bended a few times … but it also didn’t break. Dane Jackson and Pinnock are likely out there with the 1’s when PSU rolls into town so I wouldn’t worry too much about the secondary. Hopefully, Hendrix is not injured and was pulled as a precaution like Bookser, Dane Jackson and Pinnock.

Would have like to have seen more of a beat down in the second half, just so we know the team has that in them. Will need that kind of intestinal fortitude next weekend

Comment by xkegroller 09.02.18 @ 9:12 am

Good recap TT. Seemed we saw a lot of backup in second half which gave it kind of a blah feeling. What I did love was Mathis interception, he stayed with his man and read him perfectly turning just in time to play the ball, sommething Pitt d-backs had trouble with in the past.

Comment by RKB 09.03.18 @ 9:57 am

They handled Albany exactly like they should. I was pleased to see that the lines were not shoved around by what should be a lesser foe.

Comment by 2$Chuck 09.03.18 @ 2:42 pm

I think the difference for me this year in this first game was the coaching.
Def seemed to be in the right position even on the long throws it was a 50-50 chance. nothing like the last few years watching guy’s blow coverage.
The O-line had a great push or formed a nice pocket.

We have to focus on stopping Sanders.
We win the turnover battle.
I think we knock out PSU by 3 TD’s.
