I hope no one is assuming Duke is a gimmee at this point. Duke is a good team that has noticeably improved from the start of this season to this point. It was expected to be a rebuilding year for Duke, and it has. But there have been improvements in this team as the season progressed

Duke is sitting at 4-6, but it is not the same team that lost to Virginia and barely eked out a win over Army. They upset UNC the week before. They lost by only 3 to Virginia Tech the week before that. And last month they held Louisville and presumptive Heisman winner Lamar Jackson to by far their lowest offensive production of the season in a loss. (Plus, they beat ND which even if ND sucks, is worthy of giving them some props.)

The way Duke is, in-and-out of every season reminds me of the Boston College teams in the Big East of the late-90s and into the Aughts. Good team in the middle of the conference. Not great, but always giving a tough game. Pitt blew it open in the second half of last year’s game, but up until that point it looked like yet another game down to the wire between the two teams.

Duke Coach David Cutcliffe has been a perfect fit for Duke. He recruits players that fit. He doesn’t overreach on recruiting. Looking for players that he can develop and work into a system with the reasonable assumption that they will be at Duke for four years. It galls me to no end that I like and have respect for any aspect of Blue Devil athletics.

In the back of Pitt fans minds, should also be the recent history of falling flat after notching the big win or appearing on the cusp of something more.

• In the final game of the 2007 season, Pitt defeated West Virginia, 13-9, robbing the Mountaineers of an appearance in the national championship game. With high hopes, Pitt opened the next season with a 27-17 loss to Bowling Green at Heinz Field.

• In 2009, Pitt started 9-1 for the first time in 27 years by beating Notre Dame, 27-22. With the Big East championship on the line, Pitt lost its next two games to West Virginia and Cincinnati.

• In 2012, former coach Paul Chryst nearly orchestrated a stunning upset of No. 3 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., losing in triple overtime. Six days later — in a rare Friday night game — Pitt traveled to Connecticut and lost 24-17 to a Huskies team that had dropped four straight.

Nothing to see here. Moving on.

Then there is the injury aspect for Pitt. The defense is going to be without two of their three best players. Tyrique Jarrett is still out and Jordan Whitehead is gone for at least the rest of the regular season.

Jerimiah Taleni had a very good game against Clemson last week.

Taleni was able to trip and slow down Clemson running back Wayne Gallman on an outside sweep Saturday night, so linebacker Matt Galambos could finish him on the game’s key fourth down. And Taleni did it by using his head as much as his 6-foot-2, 290-pound body.

“Before the snap, I had a feeling they were going to take it outside because they were having a hard time running up the middle,” Taleni said. “I had a feeling based on formation, too. I saw that play coming.”

During his four seasons at Pitt, Taleni has struggled with climate and cultural differences between Hawaii and Pittsburgh.

“I hadn’t been competing where they wanted me to be,” he said. “But I eventually caught onto that. Now I can line up and play against anyone.”

The question will be whether he can be consistent from week-to-week.

With Whitehead out, safety has zero depth as Reggie Mitchell takes his spot. That means [gulp] Terrish Webb will be out on the field for a majority of the plays. Redshirt freshman Jay (not Manny) Stocker and sophomore Dennis Briggs are next up on the depth chart.

Be careful Chas… you’re leaning a little to much toward keeping it REAL by suggesting Duke might even have a CHANCE of winning.

Anyone who thought Matt Galambos had a BIG Day against Clemson… you’re not alone.

The ACC awards Committee apparently did too.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.16 @ 10:36 am

As for Jordan Whitehead… Seriously doubt there’s even a SLIM chance of him returning for any Bowl Game.

Personally, I have doubts about his ability to return to playing Defense at all considering the nature of his injury. It could impede his ability to endure the repeated blows that comes with wrapping up tackles.

It might be that Whitehead’s future has taken an unexpected veer toward the Offensive Side of the Ball.

Hopefully I’m wrong.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.16.16 @ 10:44 am

I presume Whitehead broke his arm as that is why they didn’t show the replay. I was impressed by Galambos, Taleni and Matthews.
Duke is indeed very much like BC in the Big East – never great but always capable to hang in there and come up with a win. I am just getting over a 2 week cold but will be sitting in my seat in the rain on Saturday.
HAIL TO PITT.

Comment by rkb 11.16.16 @ 10:59 am

Frankly I think Whitehead has been misused on the defensive side of the ball. Not saying he isn’t a good player defensively, just saying his explosive speed may be best suited on offense.

Comment by jrnpitt 11.16.16 @ 11:22 am

I agree with Chas’ alert status above re the Duke game. In fact, my prediction for our final 2 games would be 1-1, with a loss to Duke & a win against Cuse. Though 0-2 or 2-0 wouldn’t be a great surprise either.

Agree with jrnpitt re Whitehead, he seems better fit for another position. WR comes to mind, but maybe the other safety position. I don’t believe we will miss him too much for the remaining 2 games, not because he’s not a great player, but because of the way he’s been used to date.

I think the thing that surprises me the most this year, is the play of our interior DL. Jarrett has been our best, but Soto has done a fantastic job, and now Taleni in Jarret’s absence, and really the whole line has been such a pleasant surprise. Congrats to whichever coach(es) are responsible for this.

Comment by 1618mt 11.16.16 @ 11:51 am

Whitehead missed a game earlier without an adverse affect but he is always has big play potential…next man up gets these young’uns experience for next year…I see no letdown from here on in… these Panthers know they could have won 3 games and they know they embarrassingly shit ther khaki britches against Miami… they are playing for keeps with a fire in there collective bellies…This O could put 50 on the board the next 2 games…the playbook is open and MC is a master chess player… witnessed that personally vs Clemson ..We destroyed their D…

Throwback uniforms for the Duke game! Cool.

Comment by VictoryLites 11.16.16 @ 12:15 pm

I LOVE what Matt Canada has done with the offense! They have given the opposing defenses fits. Early in the season as teams tried to stop Pitt’s inside running game they gouged them with big gainers from the jet sweeps. In the last few games as teams schemed to take away the jet sweeps the Panthers have pounded them with James Conner’s power running game. Over the season the efiency of Pitt’s passing game has developed dramatically. Nate Peterman’s confidence has grown and he is performing beyond expectations.

Comment by Justinian 11.16.16 @ 12:18 pm

Watched alot of the Duke-NC game and Duke looked formable on offence and defence.

Comment by alcofan 11.16.16 @ 12:42 pm

Throwbacks? Nice. I actually like our standard uniforms (dark blue & light yellow), but the throwbacks are so much nicer it’s not even a contest. I think everybody knows this, but I also suspect we wouldn’t make the permanent switch because our university has already invested itself in the dark blue & light yellow everywhere else.

Yes alcoa, Duke is well coached and they’re improving as the year has gone on.

Comment by 1618mt 11.16.16 @ 1:21 pm

Nice thing about the Canary yellow- creates an optical illusion that the stadium the stadium is less empty… talked to AD Barnes on Saturday about the possibility of having replica throwbacks of the Dorsett Marino era.. he assured me Fo tire throwbacks will replicate those worn during that period ” in 10 years.” Gives me a reason to shoot for the ripe ole age of 75..

Comment by BigB 11.16.16 @ 1:33 pm

Fo tire = future

Optical illusion fans is similar to photo shopping crowds into near empty campaign rallies.

Maybe we should hire Podesta. 🙂

10 years !!! All those guys who played on those teams will be nearly old men by then.

If we even make it that far.

I want em NOW Herman !!!

Comment by Emel 11.16.16 @ 2:44 pm

The ‘coming down off of emotional high’ factor should be pretty even for this Pitt/Duke game.

Us of course coming off the YUGE win in Death Valley.

And the Dookies won their big rivalry, Victory Bell game, with the Tarholes. And that was a big upset as well.

They’ve had a couple more days to prepare and rest up since that Duke/UNC game was on a Thursday nite.

At least they aren’t still looking for their first ACC win of the year.

Comment by Emel 11.16.16 @ 2:48 pm

The question is, when will they start selling the new alt-uniforms. They have the Marino era in the store but I want the new threads.

Conner not in Si’s Top 10 RB’s Draft rankings.

Does this mean he comes back for his senior year ?

Did someone say Purdue was interested in the Nard Dog.

Better question, would Nard Dog be interested in them ?

Heard that rumor was spread by some psu fans. Narduzzi said it “ain’t going to happen.”

Need to come out prepared and focus. Like the Clemson game and not Miami. Pitt has better talent. Home field is a wash. I’m worried about that Duke QB and our porous secondary. I expect a high scoring game.

Throwbacks need to become the futurebacks.

Emel – Conner needs a good combine. He hasn’t regained his 2014 form yet … although he’s getting close. Even in 2014, he was projected as a 3rd round back had he been healthy and played last year. He needs a great combine. If he’s 225-230 and runs a 4.5 he’ll vault back up the list. He has great feet and stiff arm and good vision but does’t hit the hole super quick and runs a bit upright. His projected 40 time is a 4.62. I have a buddy who is a scout for the Skins and asked for his opinion and that’s what he fed me. He gave me feed back after the OKST game, VT and Clemson games.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.16.16 @ 11:44 pm

Stallings hasn’t shown me anything yet. BB team doesn’t look that great. Recruiting has to take a major step forward.

Nothing exciting here.

Please no let down on Saturday! Two wins from 8-4 and possibly 9 wins with a bowl. Need it to demonstrate progress,
pump recruiting, and set the stage for next year.

Comment by JR 11.17.16 @ 7:01 am

I hesitate to say, but I am not sure Connor’s game will translate to the NFL well. It becomes so much more difficult to run over and/or stiff arm NFL linebackers compared to college linebackers. A lot of NFL LBs will be both bigger and stronger than him. NFL safeties will hit so much harder. That said I hope I am wrong and whenever he makes the jump he is successful.

Comment by DD 11.17.16 @ 8:03 am

Yesterday at the barbershop I read an ESPN mag story about Rashad Jennings (former Pitt running back) of the NY Giants. 9 years in the NFL, talked about his conditioning, nutrition and injuries and how he approached it as a full time job. Pretty interesting stuff.

Comment by Grizzly1 11.17.16 @ 8:14 am

I studied the replay of Whitehead’s injury and from the look of his arm after he rolled up on it, I would conclude that he broke both bones in his forearm. If so, then I know the recovery time needed from such a fracture, since I lived that same injury as a kid myself. Since Whitehead had successful “surgery” the fractures very well were reduced by “open reduction” meaning they expose the bony fractures surgically to visually manually realign the breaks prior to applying the cast to the arm. If both bones are broken, because of the firearms ability to rotate at the elbow, the required cast is extended all the way up to the armpit in a “L” shaped arm cast to immobilize the entire arm.

Unfortunately this results in muscle atrophy over the months while the cast is on. So even with complete bony healing Whithead’s arm strength will need to be brought back with focused rehab after his cast is removed. I wasn’t back to 100% arm strength for months although I had no rehab just suggested exercises to do on my own.

My expectations for Jordan will be that he is definitely done for this season, including our bowl game. I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see him held out of any contact drills during Spring practices too. Although he’ll be healed by then his arm strength will still be compromised and his fracture will still not be maturely healed.

Long term he should have no residual effects at all but we won’t see that Jordan Whitehead until Fall camp IMO.

The thing that has impressed me is how the “next man up” has stepped up their play to fill the void left by the injured starter ahead of of them. Guys like Jackson, Edwards, Taleni, Herndon & Roy have been serviceable replacements. Valuable game experience being reaped from bad injury circumstances of our first line troops.

Thanks again to Arizona State for hiring Todd the Fraud.

Comment by JR 11.17.16 @ 9:30 am

DD – the stiff arm is very effective in the NFL. Marshawn Lynch made a living off of it. With Conner, he does not have the elite athleticism of most good NFL backs but they said the same about La’Veon Bell and then he dropped 15LBS from his college weight. If you remember, Conner showed up last season about 220-225 after going on Bell’s diet and looked very spry in his only game. I think after season, when he can get a professional trainer and focus on the combine you’ll see a different Conner show up. He’s not the person you say you can’t do that too.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.17.16 @ 9:49 am

Tossing we should all create a “Connor can’t do it campaign” lets rile him up! Just kidding. Hey I certainly hope he continues the ridiculously successful lineage of Pitt RBs in the NFL!

Comment by DD 11.17.16 @ 1:42 pm

It was a great point that the nfl linebackers will be bigger and stronger than Conner. They will also be as fast if not faster. The difference is intangibles. Where he would move up the draft chart is being able to catch the ball which he does quite well.

You guys may have heard something similar lately. “Intangibles for Conner”. That would be a nice shirt in mustard and royal.

Chas – since the change I have had a bunch of trouble typing comments. Is this your way of saying my comments suck? LOL…hopefully. It has been a grind to contribute.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.17.16 @ 4:32 pm

We got the coaches ,we got the talent albeit thin at some positions.Just so they come out ready to do it from the git go. Duke has been high scoring and close games for the most part.Hope we have a good home crowd. H2p

Comment by Pitt60 11.17.16 @ 11:07 pm

Connor needs a big day, with the help of the O-line which thankfully (knock on wood) has stayed relatively healthy. Sloppy field better suited to Ollison than the other future RB transfer.
Pitt’s defense has been a dumpster fire, and injuries have only contributed, talent also a problem.
Webb and Mitchell starting at safety with no one to back them up, is frightening. I don’t think Webb has taken the correct angle all year. It’s almost impossible but somehow he’s accomplished it. Can Paris Ford play up for the Panthers?
Maybe I’m just too beaten down by history but I don’t see this game going Pitt’s way.
