Good to be Dead Wrong

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:23 am

And this is yet another reason why I don’t gamble.

I think the last time I was as dead certain of a Pitt loss that wasn’t was the 13-9 game. If we want to go cliche, then “That’s why they play the game.”

It was a day when Pitt went on the national stage — this was a national ABC telecast, not regional — and made a statement.

When James Conner reminded everyone that he is a hell of a running back, and a lot more than just an inspiring story.

When Nate Peterman stepped up all game long — and man were Tennesse fans confused.

When a much maligned (and deservedly in many cases) defense completely shut down the Clemson running game, and came up with just enough big moments to change this game.

When everyone across the country learned that Blewitt is his last name, not what he does.

Let’s go back to the defense. They gave up over 600 yards (580 in the air), but for the first time this season generated turnovers. Three interceptions plus a very, very debatable reversal of a fumble.

The defense has also been a unit that has been thin from the start and only getting thinner. Hendrix and Zeise lost in the first game. Maddox and Galambos out for several games. Motley gone for the season. Tyrique Jarrett went down last week. Shakir Soto made a go for a while in the game, but was still hurt. Amir Watts left the game. And now Jordan Whitehead is reportedly done for the season.

I’ve been as down on the defense, some of the players, and the schemes (with this personnel) as anyone. But no one should question their hearts or desire. They fight like hell every game for Pitt, the coaches and each other.

Offensively… wow. We’ve been singing the praises of Matt Canada most of the year, but this game plan was special. Clemson’s DC Brett Venables is considered one of the best (and is the most highly-paid) defensive coordinator in the country. He has turned down head coaching opportunities. The Tigers took away the jet sweep and their corners weren’t going to give the receivers any cushion.

Instead of forcing things, Canada had Pitt go to power running, shorter passes over the middle and of course, the shovel pass. Taking advantage of Clemson’s defense trying to contain on the sidelines. Giving Pitt room to work over the middle in terms of yards after the catch and yards after contact.

It wasn’t anything tricky or gimmicky. If anything, it was very simple power football. But Clemson wasn’t prepared to take it in the mouth like that. The O-line constantly shoved them back and put the Tigers on their heels. Some simple changes that gave Pitt a chance.

This is a loss that will leave a bad taste in the Clemson Tigers’ mouth for a while. Especially since the two teams don’t meet again until 2022.

Henderson was a complete non-factor, but our offense has so many weapons, it doesn’t matter.

Although the threat of the jet sweep spreads out the defense.

Great individual plays from so many guys is a beautiful thing.

Great to get Watson on a day when he had no wheels.

Can we dispense now this silly talk of Narduzzi leaving and give the man the five years he deserves to implement HIS plan to resurrect Pitt football? If you recall, the only thing the man promised when he took the job was that other teams would know they played Pitt and they would know that in a physical sense. Check.

This is why I love Pitt Football. Yeah they’ve torn my heart out more times than I can count but they have also won the big ones over and over again!
People ask d me when they heard that I was going to the Clemson game, “why you wasting your money going to that Pitt beat down”? My answer was that I wanted a game day experience at Death Valley in the memory banks b fire I kicked the bucket. An “experience” it was! H2P!

Dr. Tom, you deserve the pleasure since you have endured the pain.

Comment by gc 11.14.16 @ 8:06 am

While this season has provided many frustrations, it has also provided our 2 biggest wins in 9 years. And for that, I am thankful.

Comment by Todd Gack 11.14.16 @ 8:09 am

Really cool to know we beat #5 and #9.

“They fight like hell every game for Pitt, the coaches and each other.” – thanks go to PN and JC who every player can love, appreciate and trust.

Can’t wait for Duke…these guys have learned how to win and can now fully trust themselves.

Comment by TVax1 11.14.16 @ 8:21 am

Not many of us thought we could beat Clemson This could be the game that sets the tone for all future games at Pitt Let’s hope so. The team played together as a team and coaches adapted well in all phases. Keep up the hard work and hope you all show up this week for the Duke game They are a very formidable opponent. H2P

I thought Pitt would play well and be competitive against Clemson, but I did not think they would win. Particularly after Jordan Whitehead’s fumble return touchdown was overturned. There were several times that it looked like Clemson would take over. The missed field goal attempt that went off of Booker’s back, just before have time. When Clemson was driving to go up by two scores. To Pitt’s credit they kept playing. Even with the interception and the 70 yard return, it took 2 short yardage stops on 3rd and 4th down, on Clemson’s last possession to give Pitt the opportunity in the waning seconds of the game.

Comment by Justinian 11.14.16 @ 8:54 am

I loved how the color guy just kept trashing our oline as we played power football and really took it to Clemson’s 8 in the box. Side note I can’t remember a time when a team had a chance at the upset let alone won the game while getting blasted so hard by the color guy.

Comment by dacs 11.14.16 @ 8:56 am

It’s crazy how the missed extra point and FG probably helped Pitt win the game. If he hits either or both, Clemson is much more aggressive ala UNC at the end of the game.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.14.16 @ 9:15 am

either you are on the train or off of it. much like all great HC’s HCPN has some strong deep seeded beliefs (particularly on the Defensive side). I respect the heck out of him for that. just like I respect him even more for the way his beliefs are evolving in the other facets (I believe our old OC was walking the plank after the hard count debacle in Iowa. thats just not the way HCPN wants to play). Enter OCMC (a guy with a set of stones perhaps even bigger than HCPN & the obvious skill to teach).
so many great things to take away from this W. Beyond all the great points mentioned above, lets not forget Dabo losing his “nut” on the sidelines (hes a passionate guy who was trying to hold together a #2 ranking and an absurd home winning streak) – I’m sure all the Clemson fans have no problem (nor should they) with the way he acted. And very knowledgeable, well heeled, strong lineage and successful QB/Color Commentator trying to stick it to our HCPN – which undoubtedly goes back to his Michigan Alum status and their innate hate for MSU. I will take the kid from Youngstown all day. He has over delivered on his promises and should be rewarded with a 5 year deal and the requisite budget to pay his staff well. other than finishing the year with a 4 game winning streak the extension would be the best thing the university can do to support the staffs recruiting efforts IMO. one game at a time, no let down & no reason why this squad can’t run the table! H2P

Comment by ptbreezeb 11.14.16 @ 9:33 am

ptbreezeb – good post and something I’ve been trying get across here. Narduzzi gets the college game. If you watch the game with a pro eye you will be frustrated but Narduzzin encapsulates what’s best about college football. It’s very refreshing to have a coach who really understands the 21st century game. Narduzzi understands points will be scored. When the defense has better suited players they will shut down the run, the pass defense will be better but still give up the occasional big play because of the 50/50 balls … but the aggressiveness will cause turnovers ala the Clemson game. Shut down the run, force TO’s and have an aggressive offense.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.14.16 @ 9:53 am

The most important factor in upsets are turnovers.

Hardly remember an upset where the underdog didn’t win the turnover battle.

It is also key for Narduzzi’s defensive scheme to work, you must have take-a-ways.

Comment by gc 11.14.16 @ 9:55 am

It was also funny hearing the announcers have the same frustrations many on here do about the defense. Why isn’t he adjusting? Stubborn? Another record for the school? etc …

Stay the course Narduzzi. Don’t listen to the outside noise.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.14.16 @ 9:56 am

Chas… Don’t be too hard on yourself. NOBODY saw this comin’… not even Narduzzi.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.14.16 @ 9:57 am

A couple of points…

It was a bit frustrating to watch Quadree Henderson taking the Touch Back so many times.

But as I said early in the Season… he is one of the Smartest (and Classiest) Players in College Football.

He has GREAT awareness as to where he always is on the Field… something you love to see in a Punt or Kick Returner.

Quadree was obviously following orders… to a “T.”

Comment by PittofDreams 11.14.16 @ 10:04 am

Chas… Another Point, as you point out… Canada dialing up more of a POWER Running Game.

Still not where I’d like to see it. But who can complain with SUCCESS.

Highlights the fact of Jets Sweeps… at the level Pitt was previously relying on them… do NOT make a Running Game.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.14.16 @ 10:09 am

Yet PoD, the jets set up other things. You need it all to work in concert to be most successful. Against an inferior team, everything may work, against great teams, the threat of each part makes the other parts have a chance for success.

The offense has clicked incredibly under OCMC and IF this defense comes together with very good or great CB’s, then the defensive system becomes hard to beat.

Hear me Lamont Wade!!! and other Revis types out there.

Comment by TVax1 11.14.16 @ 10:44 am

annoying to check in on the PG on Sunday and not one columnn on the game.

Comment by JoeP 11.14.16 @ 10:58 am

PoD – the power running game is paying the dividends of those Jet sweeps though. If a team clogs up the middle, Pitt runs jet sweeps. If a team stops the jet sweeps, the middle is soft.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.14.16 @ 11:01 am

Win lose or draw Pitt has a top coach in Narduzzie and now a top OC in Canada.I believe Pitt extended Narduzzie at the end of last year.If not they need to step up fast. I hope the fans pack Heinz for the last 2 games to show support for coaches and team. The youngsters on defense are showing great promise for next year. Lets hope we plug some big holes on offense. Ollison should step up and be Conner II and go from there.

Comment by Pitt60 11.14.16 @ 11:07 am

@Chas What ya meant they won’t meet again until 2022…how about we see a rematch December 2, 2017…at a TBD site…(unless NC changes it laws then it will be in Charlotte.)

Comment by milobloom 11.14.16 @ 11:22 am

Clemson had 630 yards of offense in the game and completed 52 passes. Pitt lost the lead early in the second quarter and didn’t have it again until the winning FG. I love the outcome but it’s absolutely delusional to attribute the outcome some part of Narduzzi’s grand plan.

Pitt received a windfall of turnovers against Clemson in the form of two poor choices and a poor throw from a senior QB and Heisman candidate. Pitt doubled their interception total for the year in this one game. Newsflash, it’s not part of some grand plan.

The 21st century game? That’s really generalizing. Every league isn’t the Big 12. Alabama, the reigning champs, beat LSU last week 10-0. Georgia just beat Auburn 13-7. Iowa beat Michigan 14-13. USC beat Washington 26-13. Ohio State lost to PSU 24-21 on a blocked FG. I could go on and on. Good teams actually play defense and don’t have to win by weekly shootouts.

Comment by Barvo 11.14.16 @ 11:22 am

@Barvo
To play a game against the #2 team in the country on their field and keep it close enough so that their mistakes would help us win the game is a pretty good day. I’ll take that every time.

Comment by panther94 11.14.16 @ 11:56 am

Barvo… Good Points. But that’s Karma and Pitt certainly had it going its way Saturday.

Defense STILL a major issue.

The funny thing about Karma, it usually balances itself out over the longer run.

Pitt SPLITTING the next TWO Home Games remains a real possibility.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.14.16 @ 12:05 pm

But there is that Guy named Blewitt.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.14.16 @ 12:06 pm

Comment by BigB 11.14.16 @ 12:11 pm

Unless you have attended a game in Death Valley — I have as a GA Tech fan and Alum — you have no idea of how big this win was for Pitt. Period!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by MariettaMike 11.14.16 @ 12:13 pm

Correction: This win IS big for Pitt! Sorry! Not was… 🙁

Comment by MariettaMike 11.14.16 @ 12:17 pm

Duke’s QB is 6’5″ and is very fast. Decent QB also. Looks like another shoot-out is coming our way.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.14.16 @ 12:23 pm

I have only two things to say from Saturday.

1. I am really, really happy for Blewitt…the kid has had some rough times…but he pulled through and made himself a memory for a lifetime.
2. Lets make sure OCMC gets a raise! We NEED to keep that guy.

Comment by DD 11.14.16 @ 12:40 pm

I’ll stick with HCPN! We have been in all but one game this year going into the final minutes while playing against one of the toughest schedules (#14 according to Jeff Sagarin) in college football.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 11.14.16 @ 12:56 pm

Barvo – I’m not denying pass defense is an issue and has to come a long way for Pitt to take the next step. CFB in general, however, including the SEC, is much more high scoring right now. The point of my statement was to generalize because that’s what you do when analyzing trends.

Take out the LSU/BAMA game and the SEC is trending just like everyone else … including the lethargic Big 10 thanks to OSU and Michigan. That Michigan/Iowa score was a fluke not the norm this year.

There are few defensive stalwarts left like Wisconsin, LSU and BAMA … but not many.

CFB is trending, and has been for several years, to this wide open game we’re seeing. These spread offenses that used to be unique to the MAC and other non-P5 conferences have infiltrated the P5 schools.

Narduzzi and staff approach the game understanding these trends. In order for Pitt’s defense to work, the pass rush has to improve. The pass rush is what leads to the turnovers that really make Narduzzi’s defense hum.

Trust me, I’d prefer not to see 43-42 score games like we’ve been seeing but 43-28 is perfectly fine IMO based on how the game is evolving.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.14.16 @ 1:03 pm

Great win! Period.

As was pointed out numerous times by Griese, and as I’ve said to myself every game, our DB’s hardly ever look for the ball?! Many times they are in decent position but don’t turn their heads around to seek the ball?! That’s grade-school level technique…what is our DB’s coach doing all week?! Other than that, impressive effort across the board!

Comment by Matt N. 11.14.16 @ 1:25 pm

Ryan Lewis is the only guy who makes a play for the ball consistently and not coincidentally has a hand in our two big wins this year. Not a hard thing to teach…when you see the WR’s hands go up or his eyes get big, turn around and locate the ball! Anyway, love their heart and toughness.

Comment by Matt N. 11.14.16 @ 1:29 pm

The good news is it looks like we have some athletic, tough younger guys back there like Jackson and Hamlin that can be coached-up and improve…Maddox should know by now but doesn’t seem to be progressing much — a good tackler though. When he gets healthy, maybe they should consider moving Whitehead to CB next season…he’s got good ball skills & speed.

Comment by Matt N. 11.14.16 @ 1:35 pm

Such a great win. But you gotta follow it up by winning these last two games. That’s where I fear Pitt, well does what Pitt does. The injuries are really piling up on D.

I’m gonna do my best to stay positive. Weather looking nice for Saturday. Hopefully a good crowd, I wouldn’t bet on it though. The D is what it is. Hope it improves next year, but for the rest of the season just score more than the other team, even if it’s by one point, like this past Saturday.

Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Pap76 11.14.16 @ 2:00 pm

Just hope Pitt keeps the pedal to the metal for the last 2 games and in what ever bowl. It would be nice to see win in a bowl game.

Comment by xkegroller 11.14.16 @ 3:22 pm

Only positive with Whitehead is; it’s not knee or leg related.

I broke my distal radius playing football as well.
Quite painful and the bone broke the skin, but I did recover to play again.

Still does effect my tennis and golf swings as it’s harder to turn the wrist over to avoid the dreaded slice in golf or the floating long ball in tennis.

No question the Clemson win was BIG for the Pitt FB program.—But I must say watching Pitt play is very difficult to stomach because of our porous defense.—Coach of the year is Canada IMO. Without him I’m afraid we wouldn’t even be a 500 team. That’s who Pitt should be very concerned about losing at season end. Any big name school with money to burn would love to have him calling their plays in the future. Not sure Pitt could come up with the money to keep him if the elite names come a calling.

jrnpitt – if Bama OC Kiffin lands a HC gig, watch out for the Crimson Tide to throw $ at O’Canada. I’ve heard many times on XM 84 where Kiffin and Canada are mentioned in the same sentence.

Now Canada supposedly is also good buddies with HCPN, but…
