Jamel Artis Hates the Road

Late in the GT game, you could feel Pitt flail about looking for someone to score. Jamel Artis wasn’t it. A second straight game where he was horrible. Both were on the road. After being so good against Duke last Sunday.

With the regular season over, the stats don’t lie about Artis not being anywhere near the same player at home versus on the road.

Here are his overall scoring numbers in 18 conference games:

FG: 86-206 — 41.7%

3FG: 29-89 — 32.6%

2FG: 58-117 — 48.7%

Now the splits

HOME

FG: 51-106 — 48.1%

3FG: 16-44 — 36.4%

2FG: 35-62 — 56.5%

ROAD

FG: 35-100 — 35.0%

3FG: 13-45 — 28.9%

2FG: 23-55 — 41.8%

The misses that come inside the arc that have been killer. A nearly 15% drop.

The sub-par shooting only partially accounts for the difference in Artis’ scoring. At the Pete, Artis averaged 16.8 points per game in ACC play. On the road: 10.8

It isn’t hard to make an educated guess as to why. Shot selection. Specifically, settling for jumpers and not as much attacking the basket. All you have to do is look at the free throws.

Free throws in 18 ACC games: 47-64 — 73.4%

Home: 33-45 — 73.3%

Road: 14-19 — 73.7%

Shooting percentage is nearly identical. It’s the discrepancy between the number of free throws attempted at home versus the road that borders on ridiculous. Averaging 5 FTAs a game at home to barely over 2 on the road. It goes beyond anything where the home teams gets the benefit of the whistle. There were 4 road games where Artis did not get to the free throw once.

Unless Artis attacks the basket, he can’t be counted on in the game. And it is no secret that for Pitt to have a chance in games, both Young and Artis have to play well. Young has stepped up the last couple games, but Artis has been miserable. Hardly a coincidence that Pitt lost those games.

I also think that because Artis is their only good shot, when he is cold, everyone else gets stressed, and misses shots they would normally make.

A lot easier to make shots when everyone is making them.

Comment by gc 03.07.16 @ 11:29 am

I still don’t understand why Jamie doesn’t play Jeter, Luther and Young when Artis is cold. Especially when Johnson is hurt.

Comment by gc 03.07.16 @ 11:31 am

Jeter at the 3 would be a huge mismatch in most cases and the lineup would improve rebounding.

Comment by gc 03.07.16 @ 11:32 am

The biggest mystery is why does Luther only play 6 minutes? Mind boggling.

Comment by gc 03.07.16 @ 11:35 am

well at least next season’s non-con looks to be an upgrade

This should rile up the regulars:

“Panthers head coach Jamie Dixon’s name was recently linked to the UNLV head coaching position by a radio broadcaster in Las Vegas.

Dixon was asked about the speculation this morning, saying, “That’s the open job this week? First I heard about it. Thanks for letting me know about it.”‘

Conference record only thing that counts.

Cream puffs aren’t reality. Everyone has them, sure, all the more reason to just cut out the inflationary numbers and just look at the real stuff.

Last 3 ACC seasons

9-9
8-10
11-7

Mediocrity. Because of the ACC?? We’ve been in the conference for 3 years now. Great coaches adjust play, adjust recruiting, whatever you need to do. Analyze and see what needs to be done. We didn’t just join the ACC this year.

I’m not anti-Dixon. I, as a fan, which is what fans do, and sure thousands of others, came to expect top 20 rankings, and few conference losses like we had for 10 years or so.

I’m a fan, it’s what we do. I thought we had achieved a place where we would be pretty good almost every year. Obviously, I was wrong.

Please, don’t give me “next year”, or “a lot of schools would be happy to be where we are”.

I’ve seen enough of that on Twitter from a few people.

I don’t care about other schools, and I don’t care if Robert Morris, Duquesne, Northwestern and Colorado State wished they were Pitt.

Pitt’s my only concern.

Comment by Dan 03.07.16 @ 11:54 am

Sorry on this, but just dont see Pitt beating Cuse for a third time this season. Hope to be pleasantly suprised…

Comment by Pitt it IS 03.07.16 @ 11:55 am

Thanks for the link wbb, sincerely. Those are some good teams.

However, I’ll defer my judgment until I see the 10 or so teams that Barnes is actually bringing into the Pete.

Comment by Dan 03.07.16 @ 11:58 am

every team plays their share of patsies. Pitt overdoes it.

Now this coming season with 2 guaranteed good games at a neutral site (MSG) and an away game (B10 match-up) .. I would like to see Barnes bring in in WVU which will start the annual series. Thus, when Pitt plays at B10, they host WVU .. and visa versa every other year.

Comment by wbb 03.07.16 @ 12:42 pm

this would work out well .. since WVU played at Florida in B10-SEC this year, so they will host next year.

But of course, this won’t happen because it makes too much sense

Comment by wbb 03.07.16 @ 12:47 pm

B12 – SEC match-up

Comment by wbb 03.07.16 @ 12:48 pm

Dixon didn’t need to do any adjusting. He simply needed to recruit a center. I strongly feel lack of any inside presence defensively has killed this team. Only BC has a worse defensive FG % in conference play than Pitt.

Comment by JohnRamella 03.07.16 @ 1:55 pm

Agreed, that would be great. Throw us a friggin’ bone at least.

I mean, I haven’t seen anyone asking for 12
top 20 teams at the Pete.

Give us 2 or 3 games out of the 12 or so non cons at the Pete.

Is there a rule, we have to play 12 Jacksonville States??

And please Pitt people, don’t start the teams are afraid of the Pete. Ain’t no one scared anymore.

Comment by Dan 03.07.16 @ 1:58 pm

A system where you have to pay teams to come and play you is inherently flawed. If they made the change to only playing P-5 teams it would be really interesting, all home and aways. Have to be a second NCAA Tourney for the rest, but something should be done to improve the game. Everyone playing 10 patsies is ridiculous.

Comment by gc 03.07.16 @ 2:17 pm

Here’s Pete Gillen on Pitt’s non-con schedule:
On CBS Sports Network’s “Inside College Basketball,” former longtime coach Pete Gillen was asked Sunday what Pitt’s 76-62 win against Duke meant for the Panthers.

“Pitt in their non-conference schedule was 11-1 but they played funeral homes, tattoo parlors, supermarkets and families. They played nobody in the non-league,” Gillen said. “They needed good competition. They need this win because their non-conference schedule was brutal.

“I love Jamie Dixon, but they don’t play anybody.”

Comment by PetePitt73 03.07.16 @ 2:35 pm

Completely off subject, but can anyone explain how the hell Villanova is ranked #3 in the nation? Other than beating up and a bunch of Big East has-been’s, they are 3-4 against top 25 teams. Providence, who they beat once and lost to once, has dropped out of the top 25. Butler, another one of their “top-25” wins, has also dropped out of the top 25.

In my view, that essentially makes them 1-3 versus teams in the current top-25 (the 3 losses are to teams still ranked in the top-25).

How does that record get them #3 in the nation and most likely a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney?!?

Comment by Hank the Tank 03.07.16 @ 2:37 pm

Hank – It’s all relative. There’s not a single team in the ncaa this year that is ahead of the pack. Not one. Look above and below Villanova…

Comment by 1618mt 03.07.16 @ 2:44 pm

If Nova craps out in the tourney again this year, does Jay Wright leave? Does he go to the NBA? Might he and JD change places?

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.07.16 @ 2:52 pm

@Hank the Tank…that’s college hoops this year and why both Syracuse and Pitt probably get in the tourney no matter what happen…though I think the loser may end up playing on Tuesday in Dayton.

Pete Gillen is idiot if you listen to him enough…and he was a terrible coach at Virgina….Pitt’s non conference is not good but it’s far from the worst as he wants you to believe……
.and for those you hoping to see it improve some next year…I think you are going to be disappointed..
..Considering Pitt got screwed with the next two years Home and Away teams in ACC play.
LV, Syracuse, NC and Virginia…and then LV, Miami, Syracuse and Duke…I don’t see Pitt going out on the road and playing any hard teams.

Comment by milobloom 03.07.16 @ 3:06 pm

Pitt needs to improve it’s non conference for filling the Pete…..there ACC schedule is all they need for tournament placement.

Comment by milobloom 03.07.16 @ 3:09 pm

I actually think our weak non-con is a big factor in being IN the NCAA right now. Any other year it would work against us but the lack of bad losses and the 20 wins is looking good on a resume in a year when teams have been Jekyll and Hyde.

Comment by tacocat 03.07.16 @ 3:34 pm

I think we will be lucky to get an NCAA play in game. A Cuse lose and we are out.

Comment by Frank MD 03.07.16 @ 6:42 pm

If we actually played anyone the past 5 years we would never have had a 20 win season. It’s Dixon’s formula for success. If our schedule was any tougher he would have been done years ago.

Comment by Pitt it Is 03.07.16 @ 8:03 pm

Frank – a play in game?! How low we have sunk…

Comment by Pitt it Is 03.07.16 @ 8:05 pm

Freakin Pitt B-ball. Just like the Paul Evans years now. At least he could recruit. Couldnt coach and banged the cheer leader coach. Or was that Gottfried? Good times!

Comment by TX Panther 03.07.16 @ 8:15 pm

“The person at Pitt told Bolla that the buyout on Dixon’s contract is the TOTAL amount of money remaining on his deal.”

link to pittsburghsportsnow.com

If true he’ll be here 3-5 more years.

Comment by Jackagain 03.07.16 @ 9:28 pm

Walt Harris was with the cheerleader coach…Jackie Sherill though was with the actual cheerleaders!
Evans could recruit because that was when Pitt (Golden Panthers) actually ‘paid’ the players…how do you think Pitt football became so good during that era…basketball team became good a few years later by doing the same thing…you think Charles Smith and #1 recurting class came to Pitt for Roy Chipman without getting something on the side. ….it was great recruiting by bending the rules.

Comment by milobloom 03.07.16 @ 9:45 pm

Tough weekend for men’s sport teams at Pitt.

Baseball team was swept by New Orleans in 3 games.

Wrestling team finished last in the ACC tournament on Sunday.

Basketball team lost their season finale to GT.

Hockey team, wait we only have a club team.

Golf team, don’t have one…

Comment by Erie Express 03.07.16 @ 9:47 pm

Yeah….and Dixon’s not interested in UNLV 😉

Comment by Jackagain 03.07.16 @ 10:00 pm

Pedro Alverez signs a 1 year deal to play first for the Orioles.
Lord I am going to enjoy the pain he will inflict!

Done with Pitt BBall. Playing golf Wednesday. Noon tee time.
Gutless coach less wonders have 0 chance.

So Dixon to Illinois? The Sloghin’ Illinois?

Comment by Dan 72 03.07.16 @ 11:18 pm

Illinois = Illioni

Comment by Dan 72 03.07.16 @ 11:19 pm

Joe knew.
I had no idea what OCC schedules for the Miller boys looked like so I did some research for this year only.
Archie’s Dayton squad played Xavier, Iowa, Vanderbilt and Alabama. X is a long time rival much like our WVU ….if we played them…which we don’t.
That’s a damn fine schedule especially when it is common knowledge that The OSU refuses to play them. Let me look up Sean’s OCC.

Comment by Sfpitt 03.08.16 @ 3:18 am

Joe Knew part duex
Sean’s AZ squad played Gonzaga, Providence, Missouri and UNLV.
Not great, but not as bad as…well, as bad as ours.

Comment by Sfpitt 03.08.16 @ 3:22 am

Dan 72 – I hope you shot your Blather name at the end of your round of golf tomorrow.

My tee time is at 10am. I’ll be finished in time to catch the tail end of the cuse III game. I don’t have any desire to look. I’ll have numerous e-mails from work to check.

If I have a good round of golf, heck with them both…

Comment by Erie Express 03.08.16 @ 6:06 am

Actually, I think Pedro is a pretty good signing for an AL team where he can DH. He hit 27 HR not playing full time this past year and just 2 years ago, led the NL in HRs.

Further, without the stress of him taking the field, he may be even a better hitter

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 6:46 am

Dokish is symptomatic of the kleptocracy that has unfortunately infiltrated like cancer every aspect of the US. He writes what’s in best interests of his and his money source ignoring the truth, marrying false statistics with outcomes that cannot be defended with logic.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.08.16 @ 6:49 am

how does that make him different than anyone else?

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 7:35 am

Example …

Most Blatherites … Dixon is spiraling downward, not getting good recruits, no longer in Top 25 annually

Counter … JD is by far the best HC Pitt has ever had and except 87-88 and 73, has coached the best 10 years this program has ever had. The only reason he is criticized is that he cannot reach the standard he set for himself

Both are true

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 7:41 am

Maybe the trouble is that many Blatherites are too idealistic.

Yes, an 47k seat OCS would be great .. and we have to do is to buy a city block, tear down one building, move another and install a light rail system.

Yes, let’s get a new BB coach even though the current one still averages > 20 wins … all we have to do is to pay him $12-15M .. and the fork out $3M to a new coach

I suppose you all want free healthcare for everyone also .. and at the same time, slash taxes

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 7:55 am

My standard is beating Teams you SHOULD beat… making the Dance on a pretty REGULAR basis and playing well… not one but oh, let’s say TWO Elite Eights… and maybe, just maybe ONE single trip to the Final Four.

That standard must be a little HIGHER than Jamie’s seeing how he seems to be MORE OK with the way things are than I am.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.08.16 @ 8:03 am

The same goes for the Administration.

Comment by PittofDreams 03.08.16 @ 8:05 am

PoD, how many times has Pitt been to the Final 4 before JD? Pitt has been to NCAA with JD every year but two … doesn’t that count as ‘a pretty REGULAR basis’?

Listen .. I am frustrated but also pragmatic.

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 8:28 am

wbb, I think Jamie has just been too predictable and along the way, frustrating.

Sometimes change is needed just for the sake of change. Just to get the juices flowing.

Comment by steve1 03.08.16 @ 9:02 am

@SFPitt – remember that our non-con this year included a game against Gonzaga (who was ranked at the time although they fell off the charts as the season went on). A game, by the way, that we were winning despite the atrocious conditions.

Had that game continued to a conclusion and had we won, who knows what might have changed this season and what people would be saying about our non-con among other things.

H2P!!!

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.08.16 @ 9:02 am

steve1, I don’t disagree but, like the OCS, just question the feasibility.

Now, with the new admin and its apparent focus of upgrading athletics, maybe there is a chance that changes will be made. But considering the cost of making a change at HC as well as the fact that the program is still among the top 25% of the programs … maybe we have to temper our hopes/expectations and be more realistic

Comment by wbb 03.08.16 @ 9:14 am

Pitt Dad, our best player only made 3rd team ACC.

Either go the distance or go Ivy.

Frankly, I’m OK with the latter.

Comment by steve1 03.08.16 @ 9:16 am

wbb, I think you also need to look at the trend line and the new conference. Obviously the contract is a big obstacle, unless UPitt is right about those Billionaire alumni LOL.

Does Barnes think Jamie can change the trajectory of the program? Will we get better or worse under his leadership?

I think next years recruiting class to replace the current juniors will be a turning point one way or the other.

Comment by gc 03.08.16 @ 9:25 am

@Steve1 – I’m ok with the latter as well (except that might mean my Bulldogs might never make the Dance again) and I appreciate that this team underachieved. I’m just positing that there might have been a different butterfly effect had we finished the game in Okinawa by beating a then-ranked team.

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.08.16 @ 9:34 am

Comment by Dan 72 03.08.16 @ 10:55 am

Dan 72 – don’t forget to yell FOUR – as in Final Four.

You know if they beat Cuse tomorrow we will both have to golf when Pitt BB plays a game – that is until they lose.
