Open Thread: Wake Forest-Pitt

Everything else about this day has been a bit half-assed and last-minute. Let’s complete things by doing the same with the open thread. Sorry, just a long, lousy day.

7pm game on ESPNU.

Not to put too much pressure on what should have been presumed to be a gimmee game, but if Pitt sleepwalks or blows this one, the season is done. There’s the NIT, but we saw last year how little they care about that.

I suppose it’s a little unfair to be this down. Pitt faced three of the top teams in the ACC. They were underdogs in all of them. Still, the poor play of the team, overall, in this stretch has been disheartening.

Been a snowy day. It’s a weeknight game against a bad team. Pitt has slumped. Don’t think this is going to be a raucous crowd at the Pete tonight.

We’ll see if Artis and Young can get out of their ongoing funks. Maybe the guards might shoot a bit more, so that no one has to see Robinson hoist too many. Maybe, just maybe some effort on defense tonight. Okay, I may have gone a bit far on the last one.

Jack… Top ten NCIS! I’d have lost my mind watching every second of this travesty of a basketball game. Very glad Pitt won. Hats off to JR who saved our collective ass!

Comment by Dan 72 02.16.16 @ 9:43 pm

I don’t think I want to watch or listen to Pitt’s remaining games because I’d probably have a nervous breakdown.

Comment by MariettaMike 02.16.16 @ 9:45 pm

Why did JD sub when we were up by 9 and playing well…after subs, WF came back…when you are up by 9 at home you keep the pedal to the metal and close the deal!

Comment by Jerry S 02.16.16 @ 9:46 pm

Jerry S — Precisely. I just don’t get Jamie’s coaching lately.

Comment by MariettaMike 02.16.16 @ 9:47 pm

Two evenly matched teams.

Comment by Dan 02.16.16 @ 9:53 pm

JRob??? LOL…. Have him show up more than one game over the last 2 years Mona.

Winning this game and not covering is like beating your great uncle in golf only after he lost his left leg in a farming accident. If Wake could shoot FT’s we would of lost to them and given them the first win since JFK was in office.

Comment by Upittbaseball 02.16.16 @ 9:56 pm

Yeah Dan, I watched NCIS too. Another great espisode.

Comment by Jackagain 02.16.16 @ 9:57 pm

Erie, I know who Mona is, I wrote it at the same time you did when he missed the free throw to win the game.

I give him credit he had a great game. If he repeats it against Cuse I will buy you a keg of Yuengling.

Comment by Upittbaseball 02.16.16 @ 9:59 pm

Mona, we’ve always said here that JR is top notch against bum teams….and Wake is a Grade-A bum team.

LOL UPitt….and right on too.

Comment by Jackagain 02.16.16 @ 10:00 pm

Pitt 83 shots WF 67 shots…..interesting stat

Comment by Jerry S 02.16.16 @ 10:01 pm

Yeah, maybe in this game having 11 players see the court helped, but JD has done this way too much over the past few years. I can’t see the players getting a feel for their team mates or a rhythm in the game without it being disrupted by the excessive substitution.

We don’t play enough up tempo offense OR defense to wear these guys out that this amount of substitution is necessary.

Comment by TVax 02.16.16 @ 10:03 pm

Marietta… Jack and I have found the key. Find another show to check in and out of during the game. Watching Pitt basketball non stop is bad for your health especially if you have given up drinking for Lent, like me! Or if you know a lot about the game of basketball.

Something is terribly wrong with this team. At least JR didn’t have a point guard that was his equal tonight. Artis makes dumb dumb mistakes and MY forces shots all game. Neither plays defense worth a damn!

Comment by Dan 72 02.16.16 @ 10:04 pm

Weird game.

Just get to the dance Pitt! Anything can, and does happen, after that. Liked the way Robinson stepped up. If he can get hot Pitt has a chance. He is a senior and may be finding himself. Timing is key. Basketball is a funny game of emotion and getting in a groove

Comment by Kukumaluku 02.16.16 @ 10:05 pm

Ya’ll are like a bunch of whiny old womens on here.
The Panthers are in the WIN column.
Hip!

Comment by Justin 02.16.16 @ 10:05 pm

I hate to say anything negative but I do think Dixon is manic or he has no idea how to coach !!

Comment by Mona 02.16.16 @ 10:14 pm

Mona – We call that being realistic. Haha.

Is Slessinger still teaching? Alive?

That was my favorite class. wink wink.

Comment by Upittbaseball 02.16.16 @ 10:21 pm

Yoi and Double Yoi

A win is a win fellas.

JR with his overall best game as a Panther, we can be hard on him, but give credit when it is due. He played well all game and made two game saving plays.

Another guy that played one of his best was Maia. Lot’s of hustle.

Of course Jones who played well early and if he didn’t….

Young was a beast and fought hard against bigger guys. Artis and Jeter came through when needed.

Jamie was switching between Smith and Johnson, offense and defense down the stretch even at 1.1 seconds.

This was one we probably should have lost, thrilled with the victory, small crowd, but a lot stayed to the end.

Lot’s of stupid mistakes, but that is who we are, too many bad turnovers.

Wake Forest, like NCST is better than their record. The ACC is pretty tough, always good to get a victory.

Mona, I am very happy for you JR was great and be very proud this week.

Comment by gc 02.16.16 @ 10:25 pm

Scratch that he died in 2000. 🙁

Comment by Upittbaseball 02.16.16 @ 10:26 pm

@Dan72 — I’ll take your suggestion. Thanks.

Comment by MariettaMike 02.16.16 @ 10:27 pm

should be very proud

Comment by gc 02.16.16 @ 10:27 pm

Maybe it doesn’t show up on TV but they Wake has two 7 foot and 2 6’10” guys, some who were pretty decent. Much bigger than our guys.

Comment by gc 02.16.16 @ 10:33 pm

devin thomas would have looked good in a pitt
uni..too bad pitt couldn’t keep him in PA…a tough, gutsy
player

Comment by Jerry S 02.16.16 @ 10:36 pm

That was a painful exercise. Good for a win. Didn’t help or hurt in my opinion with regard to a possible tournament bid. Welp, Jamie’s 20 win streak appears to be in reach. Rental wins and a decent conference record.

Next three games and we must go 2-1 to secure a bid.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 02.16.16 @ 10:45 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Pete as empty for a February conference game with meaning. Is it just me or is anyone else sort of hoping we lose out just to secure the slightest shot that JD is shown the door? It’s been a decent run Jamie. And you’ll get a new job tomorrow. Please leave now.

Comment by Bobby 02.16.16 @ 10:59 pm

I decided to go and use one of my tickets. The place was about half full. Seats available in the zoo Wake is a very bad team so that tells you something. Watching this was very frustrating. This team is a lot worse than they were 2 months ago. All the chemistry is not there. I know the competition is better now but they just don’t look right.

Comment by Jp 02.16.16 @ 11:09 pm

Bobby
My thoughts exactly!

Don’t see how we’re gonna be competitive the next three games?? And our last two ain’t no gimmies either! VT will beat us and GT almost did beat us

Football season can’t get here quick enough!

Comment by Keith 02.16.16 @ 11:22 pm

Desperately needed to pull out this win tonight. Next up Syracuse, a team that we’ve traditionally had success against, and if we win, we’ll be on a winning streak. I know there seems to be something off with the team, but wins cure what ails you…even if it’s against Wake Forest.

H2P!

Comment by panther94 02.16.16 @ 11:34 pm

I’m with the above comments about JR. He truely played a great game tonight – hitting key shots, getting hugh rebounds, and playing his heart out.
Congrats JR. You were the MAN tonight!

Comment by pittman4ever 02.16.16 @ 11:36 pm

Just got back from a cruise. ya we lost three. Watched on plane double overtime win over WF. Dixon RECRUIT BETTER NOW!!!!

Football recruiting is better than we realize, WE WILL BE GOOD IN 2016,

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 02.17.16 @ 3:04 am

Old Pitt Grad – FB comment “WE WILL BE GOOD IN 2016”.

I like your optimism, but answer a few questions for me on offense:

1. Who will be our starting WR’s?
2. Who will be the back-up QB & TE?
3. How will the players adapt to their 3rd OC in 3 years?
4. Will it be RB by committee or will one or two get fed the ball so they can get into a rhythm?

The main thing I am optimistic about on offense is that the new OC, Canada has good talent to work with. I hope he is a good chemist.

There are too many questions on D right now, but I do trust that HCPN will present an improved unit in 2016.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 02.17.16 @ 5:14 am

Good to see JR step up … Jones in first half; JR in 2nd half and OT.

The point I was trying to make this past week about both of these guys are that they give great effort all the time even though they may not always get the results.

While their output may vary, their hustle doesn’t.

Comment by wbb 02.17.16 @ 7:15 am

1. Ford and Challinsgworth

2. Bertke and Devon Edwards and/or Jaymar Parrish.

3. We will score the same amount of points.

4. Ollison will be the starter out of camp and will be our best RB but Narduzzi will play Conner out of loyalty.

Comment by Reed 02.17.16 @ 7:17 am

Erie, I think Flowers will bloom as a true Freshman, Dontez will be surprising Ford tuff and both Henderson and Tipton will be productive this year. The wild card at WR will be Challingsworth. The low hanging fruit is right there in front of him, waiting to be picked. It is his job to lose the other WR spot opposite Ford.

The improvement in the Defense next season will be monumental. A 6th year for “The Price is Right” is nice, on the other side, Hendrix will be pounding QBs into a purple haze, Allen won’t be denied his reps this season as he proves his 2 star rating out of JC was ridiculously under rated. Then you got our late commits in both Watts & Camp. Coach Peterson is going to challenge both of these youngsters to contribute early, the winner gets to personally tourch their Freshman RS. Then of course, no more Pitts, that alone will bring improvement to our secondary. Can imagine fast, tall, quick CBs, equipped with swiveling hips, looking back at the right time playing as Pitts replacement? Both Hamlin & Miller are good enough right now to be an upgrade at the position, and unless Maddox has figured out a way to grow about 6 inches during the summer, then he may also be in a fight to keep his starting job if both Freshmen are as good as advertised. Then of course we have our fabulous Whitehead just hanging around back there at safety admiring the talent that he all of a sudden will be surrounding him.

Narduzzi builds defenses and this Pitt defense is taking shape very quickly with the recruits scooped up in this recruiting class.

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.17.16 @ 7:33 am

the stat line of Pitt attempted 87 and WF 63:

-Pitt again rebounded well off the offensive boards
-Pitt again provided ample opportunity for offensive rebounds
-Either WF shot better or Pitt defended poorly (or combo)

Comment by wbb 02.17.16 @ 7:35 am

Did the ncaa issue a ruling on TE Clark? I knew the chances were less than 50%, but you never know for sure until they rule.

Does Coach Duzzi still have James Conner as his backdrop on twitter? This is a slippery slope in a team game. I understand the initial loyalty as it shows the coach cares about the player. But as we get closer to 2016 practices, the backdrop should go back to team…just sayin! The best players play and I think a “healthy” Conner beats out Ollison. The question is whether 24 will be healthy in August.

AS far as bball, JR and Chris Jones played mentally and physically tough. One thing I have noticed is that Mike Young when defended physically, drops the ball and turns it over. He should stay and get stronger, but I think he has little confidence in our guard play to help him achieve next year which may cause him to leave.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 02.17.16 @ 7:35 am

Good grind it out win – still a sub par team. When is spring practice? Growing tired of basketball, I know how it will play out anyway.

Comment by Pitt it Is 02.17.16 @ 7:53 am

@ Dr Tom .. Isn’t A Maddox transferring or was it another player ?

Comment by BigB 02.17.16 @ 7:55 am

Maddox isn’t transferring; Amaro is.

Spring football should begin in about a month, which sadly will not coincide with the exploits of the BB team.

Comment by wbb 02.17.16 @ 8:05 am

Reed – your post at 7:17am probably rings true. It doesn’t build my offensive optimism though.

If I read between the lines, you are saying we probably need to win games in 2016 with our D.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 02.17.16 @ 8:21 am

Don’t count DiNucci out as the backup QB, (remember DiNucci is Narduzzi spelled backwards)

Comment by Grizzly1 02.17.16 @ 8:24 am

Pitt in a tough spot here. Contract, program not nearly as good as 5 years ago. Two recruiting cycles have come and gone and Dixon still as head coach is not close to sealing the deal. Pitt has two options. Fire him or publicly pronounce he will be here and hire better assistant coaches to run the program. Dixon needs to be told the constant micro coaching has to end and take a powder.

Comment by Chethejet 02.17.16 @ 8:44 am

If Conner is 100% healthy, he won’t be playing because of loyalty.

Comment by Dan 02.17.16 @ 9:47 am

@Chetthejet, yep, Barnes and Gallagher in bad spot for sure.

The bloom is off this rose.

Gonna be 3 out of 5 years not in the tourney.

Telling a coach how to coach, I don’t how that works? What can Barnes say to him?

Possibly hire some better assistants and recruiters I guess?

Looks like we’re in a quagmire that we’re not gonna be getting out of any time soon.

Damn shame. Although we were not Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or Duke elite, we had carved a nice niche as being one of about 10 teams in the next category for about eight years.

National announcers calling us a powerhouse, a beast, brutal team to play.

Can’t fire him, no hope with him.

Sometimes you just have to sit back and take it I guess.

Comment by Dan 02.17.16 @ 9:57 am

I would really like to know how Ibrahim’s rehab is going. I think he could be really good, especially catching passes out of the backfield. A talent that seemed to be lacking last year.

Comment by gc 02.17.16 @ 11:34 am

Coach Narduzzi’s Twitter background is “Conner Strong” which is more a reflection on the “team” attitude that Narduzzi sees instilled by Conner’s fight against cancer, moreso than a singling out of a pet player for personal self promotion.

I think that the entire team understands what is meant by being “Conner Strong” is.

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.17.16 @ 12:48 pm

100% healthy and being back to his last playing strength and level are two totally different things – remember it wasn’t just a knee or just cancer but both.

Ollison is set on stardom and has three more playing years ahead of him. He should get every chance he has to keep that starting position in camp. Just because Conner can go out on the field and play doesn’t necessarily mean he should automatically get the start’s share of touches… unless he’s truly better at carrying the ball next season than Ollison is.

Notice I said NEXT season and not Last season (or 2014 in Connors’ case). Narduzzi needs to be 100% honest about his promise to play the best player and if that means starting Ollison or Starting Connor then replacing him with Ollison if Ollison is producing better than he should do so.

Or, of course, the other alternative is Conner is better all around and Narduzzi plays him as the RB1. Either way I don’t see Conner getting the number of carries he did in 2014 with Ollison, Ibrahim and Hall being capable of carrying the ball and getting passes out of the backfield also.

We need to remember that going into 2015 Conner really had no competition behind him except for James who had a handful of touches. The year is completely different..

Comment by Reed 02.17.16 @ 1:15 pm

I agree, I don’t think he’ll get as many carries, especially with what he went through, and the upgrade of the stable of backs.

However, he wasn’t just a guy to plug a hole, he was a difference maker as a running back.

I’ll give you playing strength too.

If he’s 100% and in game shape…..

Comment by Dan 02.17.16 @ 2:12 pm

and certainly, his health is the priority, I think we all agree on that.

Comment by Dan 02.17.16 @ 2:15 pm

I think it was 26 touchdowns in one season. That is what Conner could provide. Redzone offense.

Hope he is healthy.

Comment by gc 02.17.16 @ 4:17 pm

Guys – I’d love to see Conner go 100% and be great again. But we have seen past Pitt HCs play guys who should have been sat down either because there were better players behind them or they were in a slump.

I think our RB corps is strong enough to sit Conner down if he’s not capable of playing better than those on the bench.

Comment by Reed 02.17.16 @ 5:58 pm

I’m a huge James Conner fan and the first thing I want to see (and I know you are with me on this) is the announcement that he is Cancer free.

Then, when that is finally the case, I want to see him run out of the tunnel in his Pitt uniform to a standing O in Pitt Stadium at Heinz Field. That will be a special moment.

And finally, I want to see that wicked straight arm knocking over a defender on the way to a 1st down.

One step at a time. Let’s all praying for a healthy outcome for Conner.

As for HCPN, he will stoke up the competition at every position. He’s not like the other coaches at Pitt in the last 35 years. He wants a winner and he knows that if he gets a healthy James Conner, the he’ll get a RB who will put in the time and effort to being not only the best on his team, but shoot for being the best in the ACC, again, and reach to be the best in the nation. In the process, both Duzz and Conner will be pulling & pushing the Pitt FB to be the best they can be.

Remember, Hall, Hill and Moss have not taken their redshirts yet. There are plenty of carries for Conner, QO and Rashid. We will be six (+) strong at RB in 2016, but more important than that, PITT WILL BE CONNER STRONG!

Comment by Erie Express 02.17.16 @ 7:03 pm

Renewed my season tix tonite….Let’s get this party started!
