Open Thread: Purdue-Pitt

Hope everyone had a good holiday break. It’s been hectic.

Big week for Pitt. Starting with Purdue at home courtesy of the Big 10/ACC Challenge. When the pairings were announced in the offseason, both were projected as middle-of-the pack teams in their conferences.

Now, Purdue made a very late coup in getting Caleb Swanigan to decommit from Michigan State. They have big size up front. The Boilermakers after what had been a few years of bad injuries and some struggles made the NCAA Tourney last year and have surged to 11th nationally.

Pitt, well, we still don’t know for sure. The half that never happened looked promising, but then Gonzaga went out and lost another game. Still, this has become one of the more intriguing games in the Challenge.

Both Purdue and Pittsburgh have performed better than most expected so far this season — although, it should be noted, neither has played a ranked team. Purdue’s best win is probably Florida, and Pitt’s best win is probably … I don’t know … Kent State? My point is that neither has been seriously tested. But that should change Tuesday night, when one of these programs will take its first loss of the season.

The game tips at 9pm (hopefully) on ESPN2.

Emel glad you are alive. I figured you were at a Hillary fundraiser.

@Upitt, so how are you feeling? Did any of those home remedies clear up your cough ?

PittPT – no sir but Vicks on my pecker sure made things hot down there.

Went to Doc. Z pack and Steroids and cough syrup with a hydro codine that is lovely. Painkiller syrup. Still coughing but productive. Have bronchitis.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.03.15 @ 10:52 pm

if we are dogs to Duquesne, guaranteed we are dogs to Davidson. They are 5 and 0 and currently #1 in RPI FWIW

Comment by wbb 12.04.15 @ 7:40 am

Pitt is a 10.5 pt favorite tonight

Comment by Pap76 12.04.15 @ 7:44 am

OK, thought I read somewhere, maybe here, that Pitt was underdogs

Comment by wbb 12.04.15 @ 7:45 am

Mike Norvell OC at ASU is moving to Memphis. BTW, according to Dokish, he is the executor for Todd Graham’s will (maybe Norvell’s wife’s aunt lives in Tennessee)

So are the bowl selections announced on Sunday?

Comment by PittPT 12.04.15 @ 7:56 am

probably Have to wait to see if an ACC team makes the Final 4, then it all flows down from there. We will likely know our fate by late Sat, but not offically

Upitt

All that pent up anger and frustration will make a man sick.

Get better before Christmas! Yes, I dared to use the C word, lol.

Comment by notrocketscience 12.04.15 @ 8:32 am

Is Duquesne BIG? Worse, can they RUN?

Any combination of the above means TROUBLE for Jamie and Co. tonight.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.04.15 @ 8:32 am

according to story in PG, a Duq player claims they are faster. They haven’t beat Pitt since 2000 but a handful have been close.

I certainly don’t think they can be overlooked by an means … they haven’t beaten anyone real good but they are 6 and 1. They beat PSU by 25 .. PSU won at BC on Wed night

Comment by wbb 12.04.15 @ 8:49 am

I’m a bit nervous about tonight’s matchup.

Comment by Pitt IT is 12.04.15 @ 9:01 am

It’s gonna happen sometime, hopefully not tonight.

Notrocket – Christmas!! Love to see that word. Now you mostly hear Holiday’s replace Christmas.

I appreciate the advice.

Saudi Arabia basically owns Obama. He is an embarrassment. Domestic Oil and Gas firms will go belly up bc he is scared of the Saudis.

This Oil thing will cause a war in 3-4 months just watch or OPEC will fall apart.

In Miami today and they are excited for Richt. He will bring on some stud coaches as Coordinators.

LSU wanted Jimbo but Money was the issue.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.04.15 @ 9:51 am

Upitt, give it a rest. Don’t believe the lack of response to your rants and claims are because no one can refute them. We’re just not trying to have this blog devolve into a shouting match you’ll find anywhere else on the web.

I’m a half-Arab kid who grew up eating food bought with food stamps and who in 2013 was beat up by undercover Pittsburgh cops. I have plenty of retorts for you, dude, but for the tranquility of the site I bite my tongue repeatedly. I’m asking you to squash the politic talk out of respect for another Pitt grad.

James Conner having a press conference at 1:30. His mom & Narduzzi will be there. Off to the NFL.

Comment by Nick 12.04.15 @ 11:58 am

Upitt – just checkin in; bronchitis? in Florida? hope it involved skinny dipping with some SEC cheerleaders. Merry Christmas.

10.5 seems like a lot to give the Dukes, they have a 6’11” center and Micah Mason can hit 3’s all day. I can see a loss here and to Davidson.

Comment by rkb 12.04.15 @ 12:03 pm

tacocat, I have been preaching here for about 2 years now that UPitt is here primarily to get under our skin. It used be solely anti-Pitt rants but now has expanded …. knowing fully well that if you say something against him, you will be labeled by someone as anti-American, etc.

Ignore him … he is harmless (unless he actually is as angry his rants …. then who knows?)

Comment by wbb 12.04.15 @ 12:43 pm

Anyone worried about the Dukes hasen’t seen them play. They have two small guards that can’t defend. A power forward that shoots more 3’s than 2’s. There is a reason they were picked 9th in the A-10. Now Davidson is Pitts next loss. Best coach in college basketball.

Comment by alcofan 12.04.15 @ 12:47 pm

BTW – The game tonight is on CBSSN (CBS sports network).

Hope you all paid for the secondary sport cable ter.

Connor is having a press conference in a half hour. His mother is going to be in attendance.

Comment by tedsptman 12.04.15 @ 1:04 pm

Guess the guy on Twitter was right. Terrible news. James Conner has Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Comment by Mailman 12.04.15 @ 1:35 pm

Prayers to him and his family for sure. The good news out of this is it has a 85-95% cure rate and they believe he will be able to hit the football.

Comment by tedsptman 12.04.15 @ 1:45 pm

When my surgeon came back with the lab report which diagnosed me with melanoma (13 years ago); she said the good news is that you chose to live in a city full of doctors and hospitals that are world-class in treating you. To James and his family: Godspeed in your battle.

Comment by Tony in Hampton 12.04.15 @ 1:53 pm

What a sad day at Pitt for James Conner. Hoping all turns out for the best. Looks like the NFL draft is going to be the last thing on his mind next year.

Comment by jrnpitt 12.04.15 @ 1:54 pm

Just listened to the press conference. It is stage 2 Hodgens Lymphoma, chemo starts Tuesday for 6 months, every 2 weeks. As mentioned above success rate is 85-90%.
James, you are on my prayer list. I have recovered from kidney cancer (renal carcinoma)5 years now. Would not have been possible without the prayers of God’s people (sorry that’s not politically correct).

Comment by pittman4ever 12.04.15 @ 1:57 pm

Wow, all minor when you hear stuff like this.

Prayers to JC and family.

Comment by Dan 12.04.15 @ 2:00 pm

This time last year Conner is wracking up post season awards and accolades and now the kid is fighting for his life. Prayers are with him for sure. Just sad, sad news.

Comment by Pap76 12.04.15 @ 2:03 pm

This kid is amazing. Read what he said when you have time. He represents the best of what we all want Pitt players to be. My prayers for him and his family. As he said, the ‘burgh has his back.

Quote from James Conner today: “One year ago today I was asking myself, ‘Why me?’ Why was I the lucky one to be getting the ACC Player of the Year award when I had so many teammates who deserved it as much as me? Now one year later, instead of asking, ‘Why me?’ I am saying, ‘Why not me?’ I can beat cancer.

“I know there are so many people in the world who were told by their doctors this week that they also have cancer. I want them to know that together we can-and will-beat cancer.

“I will play football again. I will be at Heinz Field again. I have the best coaches and teammates in the country. I thank God I chose Pitt because now I also have the best doctors in the country and together we will win. I know this city has my back.”

I said a prayer for James and his family immediately after hearing the news. James, we have been blessed to have you be apart of the Pitt family and we have enjoyed the effort on the FB field. We’ll continue to pray for a “cancer free” report from your doctors when they complete their work.

Be strong young man…

Hopefully James goes to the Consol Energy Center tonight and watches Derrick Colter, the Duquesne guard who has survived cancer and is scoring 20 pts a game.
