Pitt-Cuse in Tweets

Tight. Much tighter than I wanted. Still, it was a win. Another on the road as Pitt is a surprising 6-1 and 4-1 on the road. Bowl eligible before Halloween.

Some of the favorite tweets I saw during the win over ARCHRIVAL ORANGE.

We pick things up late in the second quarter when there may have been some questions about Jim Chaney’s playcallling. One particular type of play he likes to call.

Yes. He ran the toss sweep. And by god he kept on running it, which in theory I don’t object to with the right back. A healthy James Conner. Chris James or Darin Hall. But not Quadree Ollison, who is not going to be able to turn the corner fast enough to do anything. Call the right play for the right personnel.

And yet, the call continued. Late in the third quarter.

It was frustrating at points with the offense seemingly stagnating repeatedly.

Pitt’s situation in the 4th quarter did set up one scenario that hasn’t happened in a while.

The answer is 32 games.

So, Pitt gets the ball back with 9:17 left.

As Pitt looked stalled out, and forced to punt. Pitt pulled a fake punt that worked. Considering the frequency and success with which Syracuse has pulled the fake punt this year with their punter Riley Dixon, Orange fans were just as stunned.

Along with fans of former conference foes (USF).

And former players thrilled.

And with the kind of grinding football that can break the spirit of another team, Pitt continued down the field.

And on that final drive, something was missing.

Pitt kicks the winning field goal as the clock goes to 0:00 — much like the last time Pitt won a game it was trailing in the 4th quarter.

Again, this sets up a huge Thursday night, big prime-time game.

Not that there isn’t some bad news with all this winning.

Funny stuff Chas!

I hope everyone that can, shows up Thursday night.
These kids deserve 50,000 + crazy fans to be there making a difference.

Get off the couch, turn off the TV and get to Heinz Field, call in sick on Friday if you have to. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM!

Bring your kids, bring your neighbors, bring your neighbors kids. Tickets are cheap, best sporting value in town.

A meaningful game in late October for Pitt, been a long time.

How are Rutgers and Maryland doing in the B1G? Between them they have one win this year vs. Indiana. They have to get at least 1 more, they play each other in the toilet bowl.

Pitt pays a few hundred thousand for early fall games. The B1G pays tens of millions for more conference wins. Two short trips and guaranteed wins for PSU, whoops they lost to Maryland last year.

Also a huge loud crowd sends a clear message to recruits that this fan base is alive and ready to win now just like the head coach.

I came away from yesterday pretty impressed with Syracuse. Possibly the second best team we’ve played?

On Thursday night the defense needs to get off to a better start than the last two games. Big plays are killers. We get down early to UNC, it won’t be easy to keep up.

Comment by Iron Duke 10.25.15 @ 6:14 pm

hahaha awesome article. The throw and catch to Ford was BIG TIME.

I have no clue what Chaney is thinking with the toss to Ollison either. Especially to the short side of the field. I honestly can’t think of a reason to call that play. Someone with more knowledge and experience than me, please fill me in.

I can see the use of the play. On first down and, perhaps, to Chris James.

6-1 feels good!

Comment by JAM05Pitt 10.25.15 @ 6:18 pm

Shalala is no longer Prez of Miami, so I wonder if Godfather Barry still has input with the new Prez down there. Who is a Mexican, Mexico’s former Secretary of Health, Julio Frenk.

Barry Alvarez could be part Mexican, who knows. Name fits.

Interesting factoid about Godfather Barry, he was heavily invested in the Nevin Shapiro Ponzi scheme at Miami.

Comment by Emel 10.25.15 @ 6:38 pm

One wonders if Chaney does indeed read The Blather.
Pitt had it’s most Total Yards of the Season against a D1 team @ 427 Total Yards. Boyd with 165 of them on 19 touches, excluding return ydg.

Cheers EE
Yea I’d love to see Boyd initially lined up in the backfield, cause you could really screw around the opponent defense.

You could motion him to either side of the field, you could throw him screen passes, or run deep routes out of the backfield, hoping to get a LB or slower Safety on him. He can throw himself out of the backfield, as we’ve seen.

With a kid with that type of athletic talent, it’s almost limitless what you could do with him.

And if he’s used this way, he would much more attention as a Heisman candidate in helping Pitt win by larger scores.

Shame they haven’t used his full potential.

Comment by Emel 10.25.15 @ 6:46 pm

I know OC Chaney is trying to mix up the plays and not be so predictable when QO is in the backfield. That’s why we keep seeing the toss to QO.

But why not fake the toss and throw to Orndorff over the middle?

Or instead of a short route pass to T.Boyd, what not let him run a curl route, but hard on the curl & then streak the side line for a long pass over the defenders?

Emel – two trick plays in one game? Double the fun and total for the year – lol. There was almost a third when T.Boyd faked the double reverse on the kick off.

I see a smash mouth FB game in Pittsburgh this Thursday night. Focus on winning each quarter and bring the W to 412. Play hard, play fast, play focused and play to win.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 10.25.15 @ 6:47 pm

Although I would like to see him initially lined up in the backfield and then motioned out pre-snap to either side of the field, to see if you could get a mis-match on him. Or motion him into the slot, so it would be harder to Double team him.

But nonetheless good to see him getting more touches and used as something other than a static WR on every play.

Comment by Emel 10.25.15 @ 6:49 pm

Right EE

Funny thing though, after the successful fake punt, Pitt just ran inside the Tackles, and Cuse could not stop us. We avg’d about 5 yards per carry. 9 successive running plays with NO passes.

Comment by Emel 10.25.15 @ 6:56 pm

Hey we made the Amway Coaches Poll. (biggest move in the poll to boot)

link to sportspolls.usatoday.com

But Amway…really !

Comment by Emel 10.25.15 @ 7:06 pm

Right Emel, when you can run up the middle it is the best way to go. Really demoralizes the opposition. Much safer than passing. Especially down the stretch.

Comment by gc 10.25.15 @ 7:11 pm

The UNC defense plays a 4-2-5 scheme that is built to stop the spread offenses that are throughout CFB. That’s where OC Chaney needs to use our bulldozers upfront and let QO run north & south. Mix is Chris James & Hall for a change of pace and an occasional breather for QO.

Is it possible James “the beast” Conner makes an appearance on the field? This is a good D for his talents and strengths.

Another scouting report shows that UNC is very young on their punt team with a FR punter and FR long snapper. If we got a block vs Iowa, why not two against UNC?

Beat the Tar out of the Heels! And then beat them some more…

Comment by Erie Express 10.25.15 @ 7:11 pm

Hey, look who is one of the voters in that Amway Coaches Poll – James Franklin, Penn State;

And PSU is no longer getting votes in any of the polls this week.

Comment by TVax 10.25.15 @ 7:12 pm

And – Al Golden, Miami; Todd Graham, Arizona State….uhhh, maybe Al has voted for his last time in 2015.

Comment by TVax 10.25.15 @ 7:14 pm

Wonder if we get another Pat Signal this weak.

Seeing Dungy play I now understand the tight end picking them. Syracuse will not be a push over any more.

Comment by gc 10.25.15 @ 7:16 pm

MMQB going up now.

Will have MMQB up on Monday Morning (that seems logical!)

I think N Carolina is a better team than Pitt and deeper/ more mature. They are favored between 2.5-4 points for our game.

GA Tech was/ a better team than Pitt and so was Syracuse was for 3 quarters. Still, we won them both.

Thursday is real big time with all USA watching.

I think we have the best head coach in the country. Can’t wait to see what happens Thursday night!

Comment by Dan 72 10.25.15 @ 7:22 pm

Erie Express @ 7:11. agree. Last year it was our power game vs their spread.

We will be less likely to win a high scoring game. Our D is a little better than last year but we still need to keep their O off the field.

Comment by wbb 10.25.15 @ 7:24 pm

wbb – drives of 6 to 9 minutes every time we touch the ball with our offense will do just fine in keeping the UNC O off the field.

Smash them in the mouth and put a boot to their throats.
T.Boyd in the backfield is a nice set that OC Chaney is using. Like Emel said earlier, we need to see more formations like that with an assortment of plays. Keep their D guessing while you keep smashing them in the mouth over and over.

At some point, we may even see J.Whitehead in an offensive set. What better game than on prime time, national TV in front of the 412 Crew.

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 10.25.15 @ 7:40 pm

NC scores a lot of points. Would be helpful if we don’t give up the two or three play touchdowns early. Williams is like having a James Conner that can throw, he is a bruiser with speed. Hopefully Dungy was a good warm up. We put no pressure on him last year, must and will do better on Thursday.

A little scary how they shut down VA in the second half.

We need more passes to the tight ends and ford when Boyd is double teamed.

Comment by gc 10.25.15 @ 7:46 pm

And keep those interceptions coming.

Comment by gc 10.25.15 @ 7:47 pm

Game is won in the trenches. If we think we can handle their dudes up front, we should do well with 4-5 12 play possessions. Will need touchdowns, not field goals.

NC favored by up to 4 points, which means they are actually favored by 7, giving thee for home field. Slow and methodical. Wouldn’t mind a little cold weather and wind either.

Will need to keep the rush disciplined and keep their qb in a place we can hit him hard, and often. QB’s that can make extra time for themselves do really well with our db’s as currently situated. We win this game. I don’t know how yet, but we win this game!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.25.15 @ 8:08 pm

100% chance of rain on Wednesday in Pittsburgh. On Thursday evening the temperatures will be in the low 40’s with and cool wind.

Slow track with a cold front for our southern visitors. Neat!

Comment by Erie Express 10.25.15 @ 8:14 pm

“Smash them in the mouth and put a boot to their throats.” Certainly, no one wants to see a player get seriously hurt, but thankfully, injuries seem to be heavily skewed to our opponents. Is it conditioning or just aggressive play of our team that gets the credit?

Comment by OhHowIhateOhioState 10.25.15 @ 8:19 pm

Marques beat us last year with last minute drive. NC may stack the box and we need to strike with quick pass like Cuse did. They probably have several QB run plays and we need to really have a man on him every play. Without Marques being effective they lose.

I have hated the toss since the Steelers were running it with Bettis in the late 90’s. Running it with Eric Pegram or Willie Parker was fine, but not the Bus. The same goes for Ollison & never ever on 3rd & short with anyone.

Comment by Nick 10.25.15 @ 9:19 pm

Ha! Saw these tweets as posted but condensed they make a great post.

Comment by Velvil 10.25.15 @ 9:23 pm

Marques absolutely killed the Panthers last year. He just kept running for crucial 1st downs time after time. In the last two game against Georgia Tech and Syracuse our defense seemed over matched. I think it was pretty remarkable that Narduzzi and staff were able to stop the bleeding in the 2nd halves of both games. Hoping they find a way to contain him.

Comment by Justinian 10.25.15 @ 9:26 pm

Upitt, I will try and be nice but I really question you are even a Carrick third grader when you try to prove your point by putting up an Oct 2014 article on LAST YEARS Jets game!!LMAO.

I do not pretend to know it all, just that you know less than shit. You call out a lot of people, well everyone is just chuckling on you. You did notice that, right?? You only did that to bust chops, right?

Comment by JoeKnew 10.25.15 @ 9:30 pm

Is there any chance that this game will be decided by more than 1 possession?

Comment by Todd Gack 10.25.15 @ 9:38 pm

Or did you mean the one that shows the line opening at 9 and dropping to 6.5 in some shops on THIS years game??

Comment by JoeKnew 10.25.15 @ 9:39 pm

Now that is out of the way I’d like to chip in on the game. Syracuse is one of the most confusing teams in the country. They can look really, really good for stretches then fold like a cheap tent. They play pretty good D at times and the QB looks good. I just don’t think he will last running like that!

NC is a whole different beast. They are as much an enigma as the cues. Always thought they had a ton of talent but only put it together at times. Let’s hope they have had their time already. Weather is supposed to be poor, hope this does not keep the crowd down. I am currently sick as a dog but will be there. Team has done their part, now fans need to do theirs!

Have any of you offensive naysayers considered that OC Chaney knows what he’s doing?? The games we’ve played have all been winnable with the plays called. But a good coach always saves a few plays for the tough games in the later part of the season. You certainly never show your whole playbook from the first game. Have faith in the coaching staff !! I DO….. !! H2P
