Open Thread: Pitt-VT Goes Soggy

It’s cold and wet all over the East and into the midwest. A noon start to go with it. So, so grateful that this is a road game. At least that keeps us from being treated to pictures of a mostly empty Heinz Field. It will be curious to see just how full Lane Stadium is, given the weather, the start time and the malaise hitting the fans following a loss to ECU.

Pitt should come out ready to go for this one. The bye week after a tough loss. It feels weird typing that. Normally, I would be expecting Pitt to be somewhat flat. Especially under the numerous other former head coaches. But with Pat Narduzzi and this staff, I just think the energy is going to be higher. As if the whole team has been chomping at the bit to get back out on the field.

Of course, I could just be projecting.

If you are in the Pittsburgh area, the game is on Root. It can be found on a lot of sports channels today, and ESPN3.

I have read several posts about Weah’s “drop”. Please… if u geezers have espn3, go watch the reply. The VT CB was all over him. It would have taken a perfectly timed leap and a ball lofted higher to make that completion.

You yinzer geezers watch too much Stillers.

Oh….and a big thank you to Wisconsin for taking Potato Paul & Out House. That and Cyanide is gone too…..if that doesn’t spell that SOP may be over I don’t know what does.

Comment by Jackagain 10.03.15 @ 7:20 pm

2 top 5 SEC teams may be going down too this weekend. That and they are saying that overrated OSU is going to drop in the polls too. A great weekend so far.

And did I mention the hoopies? LOL….

Can’t wait to play the pedos next year already…Hackenturd or no Hackenturd.

Comment by Jackagain 10.03.15 @ 7:23 pm

Upitt… too early to say right now. Ask me in November.

By then, Conner WILL be Playing.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.03.15 @ 7:32 pm

Just think what this team would be if Conner didn’t get hurt and Foster decided to stay home.

Comment by Jackagain 10.03.15 @ 7:33 pm

Don’t need Foster… just Conner.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.03.15 @ 7:42 pm

Upitt – I also apologize. Your comments fired me up as well. If we ever meet in person I’ll buy you a shiner block and bygones be bygones.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 10.03.15 @ 7:51 pm

PN the type of coach Pitt needs. Shows real desire for the team and game. If he can get most of the best WPIAL and sprinkle in some others, we will be very good.

Comment by Frank MD 10.03.15 @ 7:53 pm

Tossing – I will buy you a Tito’s and Tonic.

I should of chose better wording.

I’m thinking about maybe Georgia Tech or a home game.

Goodnight

I will enjoy wearing my Pitt hat down here in Georgia tomorrow asking all the Bulldog fans how they did yesterday.

Hail to Pitt & good night!

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.03.15 @ 8:16 pm

The energy level shown by Duzz on the sidelines was infectious-that has been missing at Pitt since 13-9. Need to focus on a Virginia team that will play desperate, 4-1 sounds real good right now.

A lot of upsets today, at least according to the rankings.

Comment by gc 10.03.15 @ 9:11 pm

I just read that Pedo St. won against Army without their starting QB who efectively runs their triple option. LOL…the backup fumbled 3 times and lost 2 of them in the 1st half. And they only won by 6.
Army gained 316 yds on the ground.

Can’t wait to play these clowns…

Comment by Jackagain 10.03.15 @ 9:22 pm

Ramella — I don’t blame Weah for dropping the ball as he hardly sees the field, but he did in fact clank it…perfect pass in a tight spot. Boyd clanked a key one that would have ended the game, and I give him much less leash than Weah, but given his speed, nice to see him on the field at least. Everyone seems to diss our WRs other than Boyd, but Ford and Zeise look pretty good to me, and I’d like to see more of Challingsworth and Weah. I think this team has more talent than some want to give it credit for, and as others have said, would like to see us on a dry field and then check out the air show.

It takes time, but this team is starting to gel and looks more and more confident. By the way, I ain’t no geezer, or yinzer for that matter.

We are a 57 yard field goal from being undefeated! Ugly win but it’s a win! First time since 2003! We will take it! I got bragging rights down here in VA! Now crush the Cavs and keep it rolling! Hail to Pitt!

Clemson and ND are really good football teams. Quite a game.

Just curious. According to you, how old does a guy have to be in your opinion to be a “geezer”? I only ask because I got a hunch that at least several geezers on here can kick your “you know what”!!!!

Comment by pittman4ever 10.03.15 @ 10:59 pm

That Sandy Barbour at PSU cracks me up. She wants to remodel, not rebuild, Beaver Stadium just like she wanted to remodel Cal’s Memorial Stadium.

If this gives you any idea how much work Steve P. and his chum Nordy would have had to do to remodel Pitt stadium – Barbour ended up spending $340 on the remodel. Of course, there were seismic issues to contend with, but Barbour overspent to the point her job was in jeopardy.

She claims PSU doesn’t need any rivals cause it’s got its sucker fans who shell out $$ for seat licenses and season tickets.

But today there were lots of empty seats at the Beaver. And if Army and Temple are the Mighty Nits new rivals, we don’t need them.

Comment by Tony77019 10.03.15 @ 11:13 pm

At Ramella – not to pile on but if you watch the replay, Weah didn’t have to perfectly time a jump. It landed in the bread basket and he booted it. Inexperienced and average receivers jump for balls that they don’t need to. Was pointing out that our QB dropped the ball in a very small opening perfectly. That said, great players make great plays.

CV also played decently in limited action. That is a good sign.

I am delighted we won. I think that I was one of the few that chose them to win. I would rather be happy than right when it comes to predictions. Gald upitt and all the others kissed and made up!
I saw a little too much tongue exchanged, but glad you all made up. We won for goodness sake! LEt us rejoice and be glad!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.03.15 @ 11:14 pm

Have to laugh at Wisconsin. Looks like Chryst didn’t learn a hell of a lot here. And if the guy is supposed to be a QB guru, Bucky fans are all over his students.

—-SACKS and INTERCEPTIONS—-

–Thanks to Coach Duzz and the defensive staff for bringing SACKS and INTERCEPTIONS back to Pitt’s defense!!

Go Pitt

(Too many posts on here to read them all…)

Comment by MajorMajors 10.03.15 @ 11:36 pm

dhuff — I thought it was a case of Weah trying to “adjust” to the ball when he didn’t have to. If he had just kept running it was a perfectly throw ball, like you wrote…

The coaches have probably been all over him to get him to “high-point the ball.” On this play, he didn’t need to…

Go Pitt.

Comment by MajorMajors 10.03.15 @ 11:39 pm

Good away win obviously.

Voytik could have completed every pass Peterman made yesterday. Peterman has more throwong talent but didn’t show it. Threw long ball to Weah short and behind receivers often. Also, he was not seeing open guys the first half. I hope he improves.

No one can say the D is not improved. Good to see Price have a good game.

Pitt needs to stick to the power run game, not trying to run Peterman. That was idiotic.

The only thing Chaney did right was making the adjustment at half time.

Comment by notrocketscience 10.04.15 @ 6:23 am

@ notrocket – I’m pretty sure HCPN was making the offensive calls in the 2nd half and he probably made the halftime adjustments.

Just before one of the time outs called in the 2nd half while we were on offense, HCPN was looking at a flip chart on his wrist.

Just saying…

Maybe he is Batman –

Comment by Erie Express 10.04.15 @ 6:30 am

“I told Chaney, ‘They aren’t going to score again,’ ” Narduzzi said. “So hold onto the football, be smart, pound it.” from the P-G

The “be smart” comment is another Nard Dog classic. As if OC Chaney wasn’t being smart in prior quarters of play calling.

Great win for the D – it appeared that the game was not stopped once for a Pitt injury. Chris James was used lightly – he’ll need to practice well this week to play. Maybe practice is where our guys are getting hurt – the D is hitting hard at practice and our injuries are mounting in #’s there. Could be true.

Have a great week and see you at Heinz Field for Homecoming against UVA. Memo to the Marketing staff – put the word out for the fans to wear yellow. The house will appear packed – I hope it is anyways. This D deserves a big audience.

Hammer the Hoos! sooo fitting.

The (WVU vs OK) chippy contest featured a combined 245 yards in penalties and plenty of pushing and shoving. During pregame warmups, players from both teams were jawing at each other.

“They came in, and it was really disrespectful, and I really didn’t approve of it,” Westbrook (WR from OK) said. “You don’t come into someone’s house and disrespect us the way that they did. And we pretty much showed them with our game.”

Holgy is keeping with the tradition of WVCC class(lessness)

Question for Reed:

Reed, I’m curious as to why we don’t even try to work in short throws to the slot WR (Q Henerson or Tipton) in games? Is it because we need our OL to develop further in order to make those plays effective? Is it something else? This would be my question to the coaches, if I could ask one at this point.

Comment by 1618matt 10.04.15 @ 7:12 am

If you get bored today, spend some time on the Black Shoe Diaries for a laugh. I couldn’t help but go look at the car wreck.

Comment by htp123 10.04.15 @ 7:33 am

To use a Tomlinism, “Pitt’s arrow is pointing up” but what do we need to fix during this week of practice?
– offensive identity
– O-Line play
– Penalties
– Punting
We didn’t comment on penalties too much but we have to have more discipline (coaches and players) going forward.

Comment by htp123 10.04.15 @ 7:56 am

Another huge issue during this game was punting.

Pitt’s punter absolutely SUCKED!

EVERY short punt went into the end zone on the fly, not even bouncing near the ten or five yard line and when he needed a decent punt he hit a short one. How many times did VT get the ball at the twenty.

And someone, anyone tell me what the F happened to kicking for the sideline to pin the other teams offense? I can guarantee you at least one of Winslow’s punts would have been inside the freaking twenty.

Comment by notrocketscience 10.04.15 @ 8:22 am

Only one positive with the punting game yesterday – NONE WERE BLOCKED.

We need to work on our punting as it has been bad all year. But, give VT credit, they were close to blocking our kick on just about all six punts.

This is my favorite so far from the Black Shoe Diaries:

If it weren’t for Army’s inability, early, to get out of its own way, they would’ve walked away from Beaver Stadium with a blowout win, despite playing this game without their starting quarterback–easily their best offensive threat. Army lost to an FCS team. They lost to UConn and Wake Forest. They finished last season as the worst defensive team in the country, and the second worst road team. They made Penn State fight and claw for a win.

One game at a time Pitt fans.

Hammer the Hoos!

HTP!

Comment by Erie Express 10.04.15 @ 8:27 am

By the way, glad we got away from the all whites, they look brutal especially with the gold helmets, glad we went back to our school colors

Comment by 1618mt 10.04.15 @ 8:37 am

Gotta work on the pre snap penalties. Not too worried about the others as the refs were hosing Pitt bad.

I think the offense has had the most success passing off the play action and except against Iowa they had success running early. Even at Kinnick the play action had success especially on Pitt’s last drive. So I hope that’s what we see more of going forward, even without Conner teams are respecting the run game by default and making themselves vulnerable to play action big time.

Comment by Deepelemblues 10.04.15 @ 8:58 am

A look at the Coastal standings and schedules for the teams shows how important that win was. UNC, Duke, Pitt and Va. Tech are the teams with manageable schedules and a realistic shot at the title. If we sweep those three we can win the Coastal even with a loss to Georgia Tech. The arrow is pointing up on that 9 win season.

Comment by Scriptrules 10.04.15 @ 9:08 am

I think the punting game was similar to the offensive play calling. Don’t let them block a kick. I don’t care if the punt only goes thirty yards. We can keep them emotionally out of the game by not letting them make a big play in the punt game. That said, why doesn’t our guy kick the ball with the point down to create back spin like all the punters are doing now? Anyway, glad no punt block.

Kicking game had one blocked. It was a long attempt in bad field position. Notice how they got some momentum (in body language) after that block? Play away from that against VT.

I don’t like “pound the rock” “play it safe” mentality. You do pound the rock if it is working. Those quotes remind me of Wanny. Hopefully we don’t do that in good weather. We were one Lafayette Pitts pass interferences from a bad result. I think Beamer fell asleep at the wheel and didn’t exploit our defensive weakness.

Was it me or did we not hear Whiteheads name called that much? That is good because the trenches won that game for us. Well done. It’s Sunday so it is time to start looking ahead at VA.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.04.15 @ 9:09 am

I’m really hoping the staff realize the power runs with Parrish and Ollison give Pitt the best chance to succeed rushing.

Amazing defense. I expect Peterman, Boyd and Co. to establish a better rhythm passing in better condition v. a lesser passing defense. Even without Fuller, VT’s secondary and DE are still pretty adept at defending the pass.

Honestly expecting Pitt and UNC to both be 6-1 setting up a nice Thursday night showdown. UNC looks to be the best team in Coastal at the moment and they host Wake and Virginia before coming to Pittsburgh. They should be ranked and 6-1.

And, as of now, Pitt the most surprising with a win at Lane Stadium and what appears a very respectable loss at Iowa in a highly competitive game. Pitt will beat Virginia and Syracuse. I think they win an ugly one v. a limping GT as well.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.04.15 @ 9:34 am

Dhuff, PN pounding the rock was situational, and a very good (and successful) read of the VT game. That’s not reflective of his overall philosophy, whereas in Wanny’s case he always played not to lose. That’s very different. No comparison between the 2 coaches, thankfully

Comment by 1618mt 10.04.15 @ 9:38 am

Emel, let’s not be too selective in our quoting. I said that this about Peterman and Marino..

“gc – I’ve a feeling Peterman is going to throw at least one INT per game…he’s a gunslinger and as he gets more confidence (think after the 2nd half at Iowa) he’ll be trying to thread the needle more. This might piss off Pitt fans but I see a lot of Dan Marino’s play, TD’s along with a lot of INTs, in Peterman except that Peterman can run the football.”

“TDs along with INTs” isn’t putting Peterman on the talent level as Dan Marino as you suggested above – I was pointing out Peterman and Marino’s more negative aspects of play, not the positive ones.

Comment by Reed 10.04.15 @ 9:53 am

1618 = I wonder about that. In the Iowa game Narduzzi reined in the horses on that 4th and inches play as it did in the latter part of the 4th quarter yesterday.

Not that I have a problem with those calls per se, but I think it shows Narduzzi is still thinking heavily as a DC instead of an HC with a real interest in the offense which will take some time. His results have been good so far though.

Comment by Reed 10.04.15 @ 10:05 am

one thing to note …. coming out after halftime, the 2 play scoring drive consisted of power running from the I-formation. For whatever reason, we didn’t see much of that after.

Comment by wbb 10.04.15 @ 10:23 am

If Im the new Texas AD I give Gary Patterson a blank check. What he has done at a non football powerhouse is exceptional. Funny thing is TCU is becoming a better program year after year. They have the better Defense compared to other Big 12 teams.

Excited for bext week and liked the decision Narduzzi made. Penalties were bad and still need to see more. Inknow our D is better but VA. Tech is on back up QB and their Offense is suspect at best. Can’t wait to see our D against the UNC’s ND’s and GT’s.

Starting to beleive we are a 8 win team and that feels good.

Comment by Upittbaseball 10.04.15 @ 10:24 am

Concur regarding more power runs with Parrish opening up holes for Ollison. Concur with using that to open up play action to Boyd and Holtz.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.04.15 @ 10:29 am

It still bugs me that after a mostly unexpected win in an unexpected fashion, rather than talk up the good play by many, some to prefer to slam some of the things that went wrong. And to slam the character of our best player.

There has rarely been a football game, or on a personal level a golf game that you couldn’t identify something to criticize.

But with all the agony of defeat that we as Pitt Fans have experienced, why not focus on the positives when we actually win rather than minimize the achievement by pointing out that VT is 2-3 or that we still hate Chaney.

There was a lot to like about yesterday’s victory. Why not at least directly after the game focus on the positives.

What a difference a year makes and what a job has been done in changing the defense. If we would have this defense last year we may have gone undefeated.

I knew it would be better, and there are still weaknesses, but no one can say they expected this production in sacks tfl’s and turnovers by the fourth game. All the things that were dramatically missing last year.

So the offense is not as good as last year’s, there is one reason, CONNER. If Chryst and Rudolph are so great, how come they couldn’t score on Iowa?

Give Chaney a chance, we did score enough, and control the ball enough to win yesterday. He is working with a lot less than Chryst had last year. He also came out after half time with a game plan that worked amazingly well and set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Somehow our banged up O-line and Ollison blew through them and scored easily. For once we got the big plays as opposed to our opposition.

When you break 80, you should be happy and not bitch and moan about the two short putts you missed. There is no perfect game.

Comment by gc 10.04.15 @ 10:46 am

gc, interestingly enough, the closest I came to breaking 80 is when I missed 2 short putts (including a 3 1/2 footer on 18.)

Comment by wbb 10.04.15 @ 10:54 am

Peterman was a very pedestrian 9 of 15 for 110 yards.

We were very fortunate to win, as we had 4 fumbles and recovered 3 of them.

Had one more of those fumbles not been recovered, we could have very easily lost this game.

And Chaney would have been the one to blame with his poor choices.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:00 am

Pitt’s total of 17 points was the lowest scored on VT this year. Even Purdue (1-4) scored 24 points.

Lots of injuries for VT on defense and they just are not the VT of old and haven’t been for several years.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:03 am

Can this be right. VT had 100 Total Yards !!

At time it seemed like Chaney was calling play for them as well. (maybe a protege)

Pitt’s D played well, but VT’s offense was just horrendous. As was their play calling.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:11 am

So now now Chaney is responsible for fumbles on a rainy, windy, cold day. Anything to make the play fit your narrative Emel. If Chad would have played we would have scored 50, right?

No mention of the losses on our offensive side.

Comment by gc 10.04.15 @ 11:13 am

Emel, Purdue did score 24 on #2 ranked MSU yesterday.

BIG game next week to keep the season rolling.

Comment by TVax 10.04.15 @ 11:16 am

You hold a team to 100 total yards, no way that game should have been that close.

Pitt had the ball almost 10 minutes longer than VT.

Had almost 3 times the yardage.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:18 am

Chaney’s not responsible for the weather or turnovers. With a new scheme, new RB, new QB and new faces on the OL, there will be growing pains.

Though, it cannot be denied that just a week prior ECU’s offense found MUCH more success v. a healthier VT defense in worse conditions.

The offense is an issue. It just can’t be denied. I mean, it’s bad. But, I firmly believe it will improve dramatically as the OL clicks, Ollison finds a rhythm and Peterman settles in at QB.

Comment by johnnygossamer 10.04.15 @ 11:20 am

Cold day….perfect football weather as far as temps for players. get real gc.

And I’m not the ONLY one who fits things to their narratives. Am I ?

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:20 am

Yea I saw tht TVax…neither Ohio Fake or MSU were impressive yesterday.

Don’t think either of them should be in the Top 5, yet they are 1 & 2.

Purdue still stinks regardless.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:22 am

Ollie had a Conneresque type game yesterday.

19 rushes for 122 yards. 1 TD. A 6.4 ypc.

Yea he fumbled, but Conner use to fumble once and while too.

But this is the important thing, had Darrin Hall been available, Chaney would have had him getting the majority of carries.

To me that would have been another very poor choice.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:26 am

No you are not Emel, but you are relentless, lol.

No doubt the offense needs to get better. Hopefully good enough to keep winning the close ones.

Comment by gc 10.04.15 @ 11:28 am

True gc. I’ve had to be relentless in my life and chosen business or you don’t succeed.

Would love to see 35+ points against UVA.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:33 am

UVA’s Defense is giving up 38.25 ppg on the average.

Even tiny William & Mary score 29 points on them.

Chaney better come up with a good game plan.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 11:36 am

Oh yea, another one of my pet peeves.

New ACC Power Rankings. Pitt up to #5

5. Pittsburgh Panthers (3-1, 1-0). Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi won his conference opener and did it with his trademark defense. Pitt held Virginia Tech to 100 yards of offense and continually harassed the Hokies’ Brenden Motley. Qadree Ollison has filled in admirably for James Conner, but the Panthers need more production out of their quarterback, whether it’s Nathan Peterman or Chad Voytik.

Any chance Pitt offense is playing possum and will become more creative when the weather is better and they need to?

Comment by PittPT 10.04.15 @ 12:30 pm

Who knows. The weather was perfect in Iowa and the offense managed 10 points.

Comment by Emel 10.04.15 @ 12:46 pm

Nothing pedestrian about 9 of 15 with a td and no picks in cold, rainy weather, vs. Frank Beamer. If Weah and Boyd hang onto those pretty catchable passes, he’s 11 of 17 for about 160 on the road. When Chad had dropped passes, you bemoaned those, so gotta be even handed Emel.

By the way, I saw Voytik footage where he completed an 80 yard strike td while stiff-arming a D-lineman…punched a hole in his chest cavity — right through the man. After the game he admitted he had drunk a case of Jack Daniels before the game (while still throwing for 600 yards and 5 tds), which had made him slightly irritable and caused the ugly incident. He stopped the bleeding and performed surgery at halftime on the poor guy, and had him in the game for the 4th quarter. Damn!!
