Open Thread: Louisville-Pitt

CBS on a Sunday at 4pm.

It’s kind of simple. Whichever team can shoot from outside today will win. I hate typing this, but Pitt needs to drain 3s to win this game.

Both teams struggle with scoring. While Louisville has more size inside and guys who can attack the basket, they don’t plain just don’t do it enough. Preferring to jack up shots.

In the 3-point shooting, they are a lot like the Clemson squad Pitt lost to earlier this year (deep breath, no hyperventilating). They tend to suck at 3-point shooting overall, but still take a ton of them. Louisville is shooting 29.4% on 3s, but over 35% of their shots are from outside (377 3FGA, 1065 FGA). Louisville actually shoots 50% (344-688) on shots taken inside the arc.

Pitt, just for contrast only shoots takes 3s on 32.9% on 3s, but as a percentage of shots attempted it is only 24.2% (255 3FGA, 1054 FGA). From shots not from the outside, Pitt is 47.6% (380-799).

In the loss to Duke, Pitt took the approach successfully used by both NC State and Miami in their wins over the Blue Devils. Double and even triple-team Okafor in the paint, cut off drives to the basket with help defense and zone, and take the chances on Duke’s 3-point shooting. Practically daring them to shoot. Miami and NC State had it work with great success as Duke shot sub-30% in both games (combined 13-48). Pitt didn’t get that kind of shooting performance as Duke shot it at just under 50% (11-23) from outside.

upitt – isn’t that what you want Pitt to do? Skirt the rules? Get better with shortcuts? Like the other top programs?

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.26.15 @ 10:55 pm

Tossing – so we stink in hoops because we follow the rules. There are plenty of great programs that follow the rules. It is a convenient excuse that the others must be cheating. I tend to think they have better coaches and players and recruit better.

Comment by Upittbaseball 01.26.15 @ 11:03 pm

Yep Jack

Two of Coach D’s sons were all-state when I was there.

So naturally we had a really good wrestling team.

Frank Walton was the football coach when I was there. We won the Section title my senior year.
Ironically beating Central at Newman Stadium 9-7.

Comment by Emel 01.26.15 @ 11:05 pm

A couple of points. Dr Tom, glad to see you have become a Narduzzi believer.

Hope DiNucci made the right decision. I’m thinking about the Ivy league contacts, especially for business, will last a lifetime.

However, if Penn didn’t offer him a Grant in Add to cover his college cost, then he made the right decision.

We should all want what is best for the young man.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 01.26.15 @ 11:18 pm

Jack again….the 68 NA HS Choir was the best i ever heard

Everyone stay safe in the 2″ of snow!

And one more time…..in the last 25 games against ranked teams, Pitt basketball is 5-20!!!!

The slide is not something that just occurred. Pitt has no chance to win vs VaTech tomorrow. Bettors know it. Line has dropped 3 pts to Tech.

Comment by Dan 72 01.26.15 @ 11:24 pm

During the past two seasons, Dixon’s team has been ranked in the Top 26 six times in 2012-13 and just five times last season.

That hardly qualifies as being a fixture in the Top 25.

Neither year were the Panthers ranked to begin the season.

Comment by Chris 01.26.15 @ 11:42 pm

@ Tony7

That’s a problem, not being ranked pre-season.

Everything is about perceptions, and the perception of Pitt being Top 25 is fading.

Contrary to what Pitina said (and why would he care about Pitt’s future fortune’s), the Pitt program has not been run well the last several years, which is why we’re in the predicament we’re.

Everyone has kids coming and going, transferring etc. Must have been 500 or more kids transferring last year alone. And the top teams have kids done in 1 year like Steven Adams.

That’s all part of top tier NCAA basketball these days. You adjust, deal with it, or you’re not top tier. Simple as that.

This can be rectified, at least short term, by landing some top tier recruits for 2015 besides Wilson. All is not lost.

Hire me Jamie and I’ll close em !

@wbb Good read. Thanks ” He [Nard] brought in guys who love to coach and they’re going to have these guys ready to go!” START to FINISH I bet my sweet bibby!..how may games this past year and years before did they fail to get out of the blocks when the gun sounded or blow it late in the game..I know some of that was on past coaches..but the teams have been listless at times.. There only approximately 10 to 12 minutes of real action in a 60 minute football game..no excuses for not being ready to go all out..football should only fatigue a trained athlete when he’s on the wrong end of and a$$ whooping. Oh, the winds of change..looking forward to a few more recruits to create depth and real competition in the weight room and spring camp.

Read the article linked above, HCPN says his goal next season is to be competing for the ACC Championship? What a novel idea for this Pitt team to have comprehend. Hope they get in their heads. Successful competition=Winning!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.27.15 @ 8:24 am

DaVon Hamilton, 3-star DT from Ohio, who committed to Pitt about 6 months ago and the flipped to Kentucky in early Dec before PC left, now flipped agin to OSU.

In fact, here is an excerpt from the Plain Dealer:
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect was committed to three other programs – Ohio, Pittsburgh and Kentucky – before making his latest commitment.

That gives OSU 25 commits which I hope finishes their class. As a Pitt fan, we must live in constant fear as you know … like the Buckeyes flipping Columbus native Anthony McKee, even though they already have 3 other 4-star LBs committed.

Comment by wbb 01.27.15 @ 8:27 am

BIG game tonight. Pitt a 5pt favorite vs VTech. Side bars of Buzz “Curley” Williams. Point guard Devin Wilson of Montour and 7 footer Satchel Pierce of Kiski Prep who was a Pitt target.

Comment by alcofan 01.27.15 @ 8:30 am

If I was DiNucci, I’m not sure I would go to Pitt. His road to be a starting QB is going to be tough. Chaney has a history of bringing in 4 star QBs almost every year. So DiNucci will have some stiff competition.

Comment by Wardapalooza 01.27.15 @ 8:47 am

He has a week to change his mind. I’m sure he thinks that he has a chance to play here but as others has pointed out, if he gets good grades here (for free), an Ivy MBA (or whatever field) is an option.

A friend of mine got a Pitt undegraduate and CMU MBA .. and was doing very well last time I knew

Comment by wbb 01.27.15 @ 9:02 am

I like DiNucci. The kid obviously has confidence in himself, and he has a dream to play college football at the highest level. He thinks his best shot at achieving his football dreams is by spending the next 4 or 5 years at Pitt. All HS QBs should be so lucky as to be tutored by Chaney. DiNucci didn’t throw for 4,300 yards and nearly 50 TDs last yr. by accident. There’s something special about him, and he knows it and wants to find out how far he can take football.

It may turn out that all the programs who passed on him were right, and he may never see the field at Pitt. But, he’s going to get a good education at Pitt. And, actually, he may get a 5th year at Pitt, which he would not get at Penn. He could get an advanced degree in that 5th year if he works hard in the classroom. He will make great contacts at Pitt as a result of being a QB on the football team, regardles of his success or lack of it on the field. He and his parents will accrue no debt from his time at Pitt. That may not have been the case at Penn. He may have other brothers and sisters, I have no idea. But, if he does, maybe this scholarship just made it a lot easier for his parents to afford college for any siblings he may have. Or, it may have just made their financial lives easier in other ways we are not aware of.

I think DiNucci should be applauded for making a tough decision, and not giving up on his dream. I think a kid like that, who believes in his abilities, is going to be just fine in life regardless of how his football career goes from here. You don’t need a degree from Penn to be successful in life, and a degree from Penn is no guarantee at a successful life just as is the case for any other school.

Comment by Jim 01.27.15 @ 9:04 am

Guys Dinnuci is 2 Stars. He will never see the field or we have bigger problems.

Dr T, you can get as excited as you want to…no one is stopping you. However I have to look at Pitt’s history with new coaches and remember that PITT fans felt the same with each of them also.

Can you remember the ‘buzz’ around the program with DW? Sure you can, just as you can about fans thinking we’d be scoring. Huge points with Graham and then Chryst.

I’m sure enjoying what has been happening since Chryst left and, yes, the excitement is building. However, and I have heard this sentiment from every single commenter on the Blather at one time or another, the proof is in the games and the won/loss record. Every single one of us. So why should this situation be that different?

So, I’ll let wait for the first results to roll in before I start my happy dance.

Emel:

Thanks. I think the national perception changed pretty dramatically after Dixon’s loss to Butler as a #1 seed. ?The selection committee felt foolish. And then of course Pitt feel apart during the Big East regular season the following year.

Comment by :Tony77019 01.27.15 @ 9:40 am

The picture of DiNucci shows incredibly skinny arms yet at 6’3″ he is the same size as Stocker and McKee, and many think they will play right away.

A redshirt year on the training table and in the weight room will do wonders.

Just don’t see Chaney offering the kid if he did not feel there was a reasonable chance of him being competitive. The kid is also smart enough to know the ramifications of his decisions vis a vis the University of Pennsylvania. Not the first kid to turn down the ivy league in favor of ball. Have also met ivy league graduates that went to graduate school at Pitt.

Comment by gc 01.27.15 @ 9:42 am

Comment by gc 01.27.15 @ 9:43 am

I wouldn’t discount DiNucci one bit. There are guys I’ve seen who just make plays on the field. Years ago at Pitt Stadium, I saw a small kid come off the bench in the 2nd half for BC. That skinny kid was Doug Flutie and he was terrific that day and went on to a outstanding college quarterback.

Comment by Justinian 01.27.15 @ 9:48 am

Tony, how could the committee feel foolish when Butler made it all the way to the championship game?

There is no doubt that Pitt BB declined since that season. Last year provided hope of improvement but this year looks more like 2011-12. But if Pitt should get back to the way it was 4 years ago, then it will be quicker for them to return national recognition than a team who has never been there.

Comment by pmdH2P 01.27.15 @ 10:10 am

Reed is right. The new staff has to prove themselves on the field.

HCPN stating that he thinks Pitt should win the ACC this year reminds me of Graham predicting a BE championship right away.

Personally, as many of you know, I NEVER trusted Fraud, from the day I heard him in his hiring press conference he came off to me as a phony. On the other hand, HCPN seems more sincere, but there are certainly similarities to Fraud at this point in time.

I think there is real reason for optimism but none of us will know for sure until Sept and even then, theremay be some doubt.

Comment by wbb 01.27.15 @ 10:12 am

I have no expectations for Dinucci to play, let alone to be a good qb but from my novice take on his film combined with the absurd productivity at the highest level of pa hs football, i think he has potential.

Now, if pitt closes this class out with a DT and a quality WR i will be thrilled. I saw on yesterdays war chart that Chaney was recruiting down in Tennessee.. Anybody know who he couldve been talking to?

pmdH2P, what gets me is how Snyder tweets every detail of PSU’s Board of Trustees meetings. She is doing her job I guess but is way over the top IMO with so many nothing tweets.

But remember, she works for a PSU grad, AND lives in State College so has nothing else to do.

As far as DiNucci and his skill-set..who are we to judge but his numbers in high school are incredible..It’s amazing how the best of the best QB’s possess not only leadership and accurracy of delivery but QB smarts..I’m talkin bout brains that function a notch above or 2 above the rest of the pack.. fined-tuned computers/machines that slows the game down for them..they sense what is going on around them..can feel pressure..and see plays unfolding before them to make split-second correct decisions..I am not projecting him to be a star yet alone compare him to the elite NFL QB but I swear it’s the QB who can process the information the best with good physical abilities who reach the upper echelon of Quarterbackdom..it waits to be seen

pmdH2P, Funny that she is PSU grad (I think) covering her school whereas Warner is an ND alum.

My guess is that Warner will eventually be looking to leave the PG. I do think he is getting better and more knowledgeable, and when he does focus, comes forward with good info and opinions. However, his focus many times seems to be elsewhere.

Even though the schedule is tougher next year, I already have higher expectations than I did last year at this time. We now know that we have a strong offense and Nardo should have our defense functioning at a considerably higher level.

There is no one on the schedule that at this point looks to be unbeatable, so we should have mostly very competitive games that can go either way.

I look for a whole new attitude and winning more of the close ones than losing them.

No more Akron’s or Houston’s.

When I worked in Harrisburg many years ago, I had a friend (a woman) who had graduated from Penn State with a journalism degree. She covered sports for the school paper and it was about that time when women were able to go into locker rooms. She told me that the first rule was to keep her eyes looking directly into the eyes of the player with whom she was speaking. The second rule was to never drop her pen.

@1618, If you really think a 7′ 400 lb. dietary project junior college transfer is going to come here and solve our center problem next year then I have serious doubts that you ever played basketball. It isn’t like he is some superstar who just happened to gain weight. The only area of qualification he has demonstrated is that he is 7′ tall. If he even resembled an ACC center there would have been dozens of schools interested. The fact that he is coming here has more to do with our abject desperation than any talent he has shown. The chances of this guy contributing here are ridiculously thin and the only pertinent statistic is the last 4 projects JD has come up with have been stiffs. Gilbert, Randall, Uchebo, and Haughton. Nix is just the next stiff in line. the problem is it is becoming a long line.

Doorson gets about 10 minutes a game. Avg’s 1.5 ppg and 2 rpg.

So he might be better than anyone we have at the 5. lol

Comment by Emel 01.27.15 @ 2:15 pm

@spirit,

One of the things that makes me optimistic about Nix is that he is actually improving. The true “stiffs” don’t ever seem to improve.

Ontario Lett is teaching Nix. If Nix contributes like Lett did (20 minutes per game, 10 points and 5 rebounds), Pitt’s hole at center would be filled.
