PITT 30 – Syracuse 7

Can we talk about this like adults?  ( I just heard that for the first time in 33 years of marriage and thought I’d share).

Hey, we played a football game today against a long time rival and won convincingly. Let’s devote at least some time to it.

Defense played well, offense was efficient and there were enough weird plays for us PITT fans to debate .

Personally I think 5-6 sounds a lot better than 4-7.  We actually have a shot at a post-season game based on Paul Chryst’s personality – you know that the bowl game sponsors are dying to get him for their event, he’ll put butts in the seats for sure!!

So what say you?

Guys, I am an optimist, when it comes to Pitt football. However I am not optimistic about the Panther’s chances of winning next week’s game in Miami. They have just lost too many close game this year that they really should have won. Let’s hope they show up in Miami ready play.

Comment by Justinian 11.24.14 @ 10:20 am

I believe Joe Moore was at Temple when they beat us, from there he went to Notre Dame with Lou Holtz and beat us from there. Probably the best O-line coach ever.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 10:25 am

Well, if we would beat Miami, we would both be 6-6. Makes it sound more feasible.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 10:27 am

There is no “big announcement.” Chris Peak tweeted about a personnel move that could have long-term implications and linked to an article behind the paywall. From the tweets related to that, it’s a player personnel move, nothing big like an AD or DC ouster.

Comment by Jon 11.24.14 @ 10:31 am

Been travelling yesterday and this am – MMQB will be up by COB today (or by SOB tomorrow). That’s for all you SOBs.

Comment by Reed 11.24.14 @ 10:32 am

The screen pass to Boyd for the TD was an incredible pass. quick release and a bullet to the bullseye.

Robert Foster’s stats – 4 receptions for 40 yards vs Western Carolina CC

@ Dan -I know this is a sports blog but I need to tell you that you inspired me to call my 89 year old Dad which I did 10 minutes ago. He was a WW II wireman for the 78th Army infantry. He went ahead of the front line to set up communication wire. He was wounded setting up wire while crossing the Remagen Bridge in Germany and stayed on the Bridge and maintained communication for 21 hours. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and a third medal I can’t remember for doing this.
Sorry for the diatribe but he ended the phone call by saying he couldn’t find the Pitt/ Syracuse game on the telly. His second time in Pittsburgh and my deceased mother’s first time in Pittsburgh was when they dropped me off at Tower A in Oakland in August 1970.

Comment by Tony in Hampton 11.24.14 @ 10:54 am

I saw a great highlight of a fake field goal in college and one in the NFL, I think it was the Rams. Any chance we even practiced this? I wonder if we even have any trick plays? In three years under PC we have yet to run ONE surprise play. I should get over expecting us to take a chance here and there, we seem to never go for it on fourth, and when we do we do dumb stuff like call timeout, lope out of the huddle, hand it off 7 yards deep, basically everything you can do to help the defense. Just wondering how you improve red zone efficiency and try to even the odds vs. a team like Miami with superior athleticism and speed.

Comment by PIttMan 11.24.14 @ 10:54 am

GC, That’s right. Joe Moore’s offensive linemen would run through walls for him. Letting him go from the Pitt coaching staff was a big mistake. He kept coming back and his offensive lines would kill us.

Comment by Justinian 11.24.14 @ 10:56 am

Just glad to see a win for the last time in person this year. Our offense is better than most if not all of teams in the ACC coastal at this point in the season.

However, our defense didn’t do anything, the poor Orange are really bad offensively.

Lets Go whip Miami for the first time at their house in my lifetime! Statistics have to be in our favor.

Comment by Altoona_Josh 11.24.14 @ 11:00 am

Friend Texted me maybe this is the announcement: Ronald Jones has likely seen his last days as a player at Pitt.

Comment by JSS 11.24.14 @ 11:02 am

– if so, puzzling. He was part of Fraud’s class, son of a preacher and family friend of Andrew McCutchen

– Moore coached at Temple after Gottfired didn’t retain him (he wanted to be OC but was rejected)

– he then was OL coach for L Holtz at ND

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 11:08 am

@Tony in Hampton, well that makes me feel great, thanks for letting me know.

As for talking on here, we talk about all kinds of stuff, movies, memories, old stories,
whatever.

As Emel said, bunch of good eggs on here, that’s what makes this a great site!!

Comment by Dan 11.24.14 @ 11:16 am

@dhuffdaddy, great stuff. What a great idea.

And for inspiration, you just set off my light bulb.

I believe my nieces husband, interviewed my Dad 6 or 7 years ago, for a project he was doing for a college class of his.

He filmed it. I never thought to ask him if he still had it.

Dialing the phone right now!! Thank you.

Got this Pitt Football Survey in my email. Opportunity to tell them what you really think.

link to customercontactinc.net

Comment by Atlanta Panther 11.24.14 @ 11:37 am

It’s a good survey if they read it. Here is a key question:

What are the factor affecting whether you will buy tickets (rate on scale of 1-10)

Game time

Game day weather

Traffic and transportation to the game

Having a parking pass

Tailgating

Transportation home (traffic, exiting parking lots..)

The opponent/visiting team

Pitt’s recent performance/record

Price of tickets

Amount of contribution required for premium seats

Comment by Atlanta Panther 11.24.14 @ 11:39 am

Thanks, Atlanta Panther, for posting that link to the survey.

Pretty much every Pitt fan I follow on Twitter got the survey and said they’ll be filling it out. I’m going to do the same, even if it’s supposed to be STH-exclusive.

Tell them what you think. I know a lot of fans said they’ll be taking Pederson to task in these.

Comment by Stoosh 11.24.14 @ 11:43 am

Thanks for the link, ATL Panther.

I filled it out.

Comment by JSS 11.24.14 @ 12:06 pm

No talk on here about the Chaminade game tonight. 1 win and we become a football school.

Comment by alcofan 11.24.14 @ 12:07 pm

@ Dan – You are welcome, kind sir. You made me think of that, so thank you. It is a gift that you can give to your kids and to their kids. Family history is a gift, regardless of circumstance. Mine talked of walking to school….uphill of all things, but not both ways. They talked of cranking their first car to get it to start. Religion, race, economics. It is a prized possession because it is honest.

And now, the analogy to Pitt Football. We all have lived it. Frustration to greatness, to frustration. Our fingers sometimes bleed on the keyboard I imagine because we root so hard for our guys! It’s a proud history that we need to share with our kids so that they can share with theirs. The problem I fear is that we are going to lose a generation because of our failure on the field, and off of it. That is my plea to the Chancellor to fix immediately.I don’t need a survey. Surveys lead to statistics that can be manipulated. Be honest like my grandparents.

AS far as Joe Moore, I was at USC when he finished up there. He was colorful to say the least, but extremely solid as a person. Unbelievable motivator. I think that is why I pulled for Bostad so much. Pitt needs this type of personality on the staff. One that commands respect immediately, like Coach Moore.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.24.14 @ 12:19 pm

Just completed the survey-thanks for the link

Comment by John 11.24.14 @ 12:22 pm

I agree Stoosh. I certainly didn’t hold back. I guess I posted this for the 3 of us that are still back in the stone age.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 11.24.14 @ 12:35 pm

What in the world was Tim Settle doing at the game on Saturday? We don’t get Defensive line recruits like that to even consider Pitt, let alone come to a game.

Comment by JJ 11.24.14 @ 12:44 pm

Dan, Your comments resonated with me as well. I remember going to the Pitt games in the 1960s as a kid with my father and one of his closest friends who had played at Pitt. We would park at a gas station on Forbes Avenue, stop at a cigar shop or another shop or two, and then walk up Cardiac Hill to Pitt Stadium. I remember going to all the games during the Majors and Sherrill years and Tony Dorsett’s 300 yard game against Notre Dame.

Comment by Justinian 11.24.14 @ 12:46 pm

I took the survey and supplied more comments than I usually do in these type of surveys

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 12:46 pm

Updates:

– PC provided no status of Conner, Render or Bradley “we’ll see”

– Miami is 10 pts favorite

– below is Ron Jones status per Werner tweet (I seriously doubt this was the announcment that C Peak referred to)

ReplyRetweetFavorite2m
Sam Werner ? @SWernerPG Per team spokesman, #Pitt WR Ronald Jones is still a member of the team, but is not active due to disciplinary reasons.

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 1:00 pm

I agree wbb that does not seem like a major Earth shattering announcement

Comment by John 11.24.14 @ 1:17 pm

PittofDreams use of capitalization is as irritating to read as Pitt football is to watch.

Not trying to bash but it’s extremely poor use of emphasis where none is needed. “Horrible”, “best” , “always” etc are already words with strong connotations, they do not require extra modifiers to promote them. It’s like reading something written by someone incapable of controlling the volume of their voice and just screams random words mid-sentence.

Comment by tacocat 11.24.14 @ 1:23 pm

John-Wbb, the big news Bertke to join Conner on the defensive line…might as well stir the pot.

Comment by pd 11.24.14 @ 1:25 pm

Miami will kill Pitt. It will look like the panthers are standing still

Comment by DocJLK 11.24.14 @ 1:38 pm

Hey, one other thing about Saturdays win, maybe someone already mentioned it.

Anytime Pitt wins,

and Penn State, WVU and Notre Dame all lose,

it’s a good weekend!!!

Comment by Dan 11.24.14 @ 1:52 pm

I noticed no difference in the offense with or without Conner in the game. Conner would have helped more at DE this year. RBs are a dime a dozen in football anymore.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.24.14 @ 2:24 pm

On my completed Pitt Football Survey, I simply copied “Fire Steve Pederson Immediately” after I initially typed it the first time, then just copied it to every other comments section in the survey. I think they got my drift.

How’s that tacocat? NO CAPITALIZATION! BTW, reading capitalized words in Pitt Blather copy is as irritating for you as watching Pitt footbaal1?!?!? Come on Man! Get more creative in your writing.

Watching Pitt lose all of these heartbreaking close ones this season was more irritating than a full blown Shingles patient, who’s also dealing with a bad sunburn, wearing a tight wool sweater to play tennis in, on a hot day. NOW THAT’S IRRITATING!

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.24.14 @ 2:46 pm

Ward, while I think you are just trying to get PoD’s dander up, it does beg the question, why not, run the other guys more and let Conner get some plays in at D-End, a position of dramatic need.

It does seem that, Bennett, James and Ibrahim could have contributed a lot more than they did on the bench.

A key sack or pressure might have changed the outcome of one of those close games.

All we can hang our hat on is “we have a guy that tied and should beat another of TD’s records” and a win-loss record that flat out sucks.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 2:53 pm

So Jennings has the same # of catches as Foster.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 3:04 pm

but Jennings is backing up M Garner; Foster is backing up Amari Cooper

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 3:06 pm

Alas, I used my 30% off from doing the survey to buy old script merch-although a lot of items are sold out in many sizes so I couldn’t even get what I wanted. Thanks Steve, again, you are what will be on my mind as I say grace on Thursday.

Comment by John 11.24.14 @ 3:14 pm

Considering I graduated from our beloved alma mater with a degree in creative writing you have doled out a tremendous insult to the Pitt Writing Program, Dr. Tom.

Comment by tacocat 11.24.14 @ 3:19 pm

a comma after ‘writing’ wouldn’t have hurt

Comment by wbb 11.24.14 @ 3:24 pm

-“…the big news: Bertke to join Conner on the defensive line”. comment by pd – priceless!!!
We have a sophomore that is breaking Tony Dorsett records when he was a senior and a few of you hard heads still want to see him play defense.
FACT: The Syracuse game was the FIRST game all year that Chris James and Issac Bennett both looked good. Why might that be? Could it possibly be because Syracuse was soooooooo stinking bad? Duh!!! I think we should also move Tyler Boyd to defense, we got plenty of good other receivers but not enough of good D backs. Makes JUST as much sense to move Conner as it would to move Boyd. Guys, please move on – please.

Comment by pittman4ever 11.24.14 @ 3:25 pm

omg, still reading Conner to DE comments. I can only presume those comments are coming from one an acc coach in disguise. Good one. Keep em’ coming.

Comment by 1618mt 11.24.14 @ 3:27 pm

Comment by keith 11.24.14 @ 3:37 pm

No insults were intended tacocat. But then, I’m led to pose the question, “why keep such fine honed higher education personal talents clandestined when the Blather is such an appropriate forum for exercising those acquired skills?

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.24.14 @ 3:43 pm

@ Keith, the athletic department is probably just developing a data base in an attempt to limit the potential of Smilie Steve ending up with a cap in his a$$ from some random drive by from fed up Pitt fans. LOL!

Our endeared AD isn’t stupid, he knows how to initiate precautions to protect himself, he’s just incompetent in his professional job description. That’s all.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.24.14 @ 3:51 pm

Is this the weakest football schedule we have ever faced? I don’t remember a weaker one. Based on that, has there been a more underachieving team?

Has there been a worse defense in the last 40 years?

Comment by pd 11.24.14 @ 4:29 pm

Did anyone watch KDKA Sportstalk last night ? They were to address the “state of local college football coaching”. I could not hang in late enough as CBS was delayed because of NFL.It’s as clear as the nose on your face ,not just to Blatherites House and Pederson are a disaster and have to go! But Chryst impresses me less and less in the Quality of his HC management. Observations on here about defensive side ov ball are on target.

Comment by Pitt 60 11.24.14 @ 4:40 pm

Some of you Blatherites are a kick. Pitt wins a football game and there are comments about how poor the competition was as if it was Pitt’s fault, and should apologize for the win.

Wait until next year.

My other team, GA Tech, is getting ready for their interstate rival. As Tech’s fight song says, “to hell with Georgia… I’m a ramblin wreck from GA Tech and a hellava engineer.” The only fight song that mentions booze and cusses — my kind of fight song. And of course, Hail to Pitt!

Comment by MariettaMike 11.24.14 @ 4:48 pm

BostonCommons, young but, the defense had:

4 RS SRs

Durham, Vinopal, Gonzalez, Thomas

3 RS JRs

Grigsby, Pitts, Mosely- Smith

1 JR and 2 RS SO

Render, Bradley, Mitchell

Young, a little, but mostly few pro-prospects.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 5:04 pm

Okay POD. The week before the Pitt-Miami game i always believe this is=our year.In 2002, 2003, 2010, and last year I even had a Pitt-Miami party. Always disappointed. Always angry.

To hear Canes fans talking, their program is in disarray, Golden has a record identical to Shannon, and they’re already hired the plane to fky over Sun Life with a “Fire Golden” banner.

Every year we crap out.

So I hear you talking and I want to believe. I am just going to wait until Saturday.

Comment by TonyinHouston 11.24.14 @ 5:45 pm

The ACC coastal stinks… most of the teams are very similar to Pitt… you never know what team is going to show up, so while I’d normally be on the side that no way Pitt can win down there, Miami is Miami in name only and are very beatable. Game is a toss up to me.

Comment by pittandpsugrad 11.24.14 @ 6:01 pm

MM, love to see that, but I won’t hold my breath.

More of a chance that they are out of the top 25 two weeks from now. Although beating FSU would make a lot of Conferences happy by knocking them out of the playoff.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 6:05 pm

I called my dad and sister today. Just finished the survey that hopefully cans Steve and DC House.

Now for an early prediction for the Miami game:

Pitt 31 – 28 without Conner. If Conner plays, we win 38 – 28

I’m riding the PoD wave – T.Boyd scores 2 TD’s, Voytik 1 rushing TD, Holtz 1 TD and Blewitt makes 1 FG and misses one. If Conner plays, he scores a TD to break the great Dorsett record.

Comment by Erie Express 11.24.14 @ 6:06 pm

pittandpsu, unfortunately, we have lost all of the toss-ups so far. Well, at least we are due.

Comment by gc 11.24.14 @ 6:07 pm

On PAPER… Miami should RUN (and PASS) away with it.

Duke Johnson… 7.2 Yards per Carry… 1400 PLUS Total.

Wait! It gets WORSE…

Quarterback Brad Kaaya 7.97 Yards per Attempt… 2666 Total.

And wait, wait! It gets WORSER… the Hurricanes have a Receiver averaging 27 Yards per Catch… and his name is DORSETT.

On Paper, It’s UGGGGGLLLLLLLLY!

And what’s that? James Conner, “Panther Beast Mode” might NOT play?

Yes, on Paper, it’s TRULY, REALLY UGLY.

But that’s why they call it an “UPSET”… another word that starts with “U.”

Comment by PittofDreams 11.24.14 @ 6:20 pm

Davon Hamilton decommited after last week saying he was passionate about Pitt.

Comment by pd 11.24.14 @ 7:49 pm

Looked at his senior tape last week, he was much improved. Will visit OSU Saturday. This is one they couldn’t afford to lose.

Comment by pd 11.24.14 @ 7:53 pm

I need to read up a little more on it but from what I did read (Karlo Zovko at 247sports & a few others), Hamilton had a really good senior year and recently started to garner interest from Ohio State. Hamilton is still very much on Pitt’s radar and vice versa, but he wants to take all of his visits to make sure. There’s still apparently a good chance that Pitt keeps him.

Comment by Stoosh 11.24.14 @ 8:04 pm

We haven’t beaten Miami since WLAT’s magical first season of 1997.

September 18th, 1997 to be exact.

Long time ago, several wives/gf’s ago, sort of how I keep track.

Miami needless to say, losing to us, had a losing season that year at 5-6.

One of only 2 losing seasons that Miami has had in the last 35 years, since 1980.

I always thought Miami sort of took our rightful place among college football’s elite.

Pitt started tracking downhill almost at the same time of Miami’s rise in the early 80’s.

Had Bernie Kozar of Youngstown came to Pitt instead of Miami, all of that history might have changed.

Then again Pitt is Pitt, maybe not.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 8:12 pm

Speed kills.

Which is why we usually lose (and get routed ) by Miami.

They would have to play similar to WVcc in 2007 for us to win. Basically bumble it away.

Thug U had a very bumbling performance against UVA losing by the exact score we won by,….30-7.

Vegas ain’t (emph) buying a Pitt win.

Remember the key to enjoying Pitt sports is low expectations.

So therefore I expect Pitt to get routed. Especially if Conners doesn’t play.

Comment by Emel 11.24.14 @ 8:23 pm

OSU needs insurance if Noah Spence is not able to return next year from a drug suspension.

I said this with Whitehead and I will say it with Hamilton. OSU has a lot to offer. These kids need to study the two deep. Whitehead is ultra talented but despite the OSU promises, he wouldn’t be seeing the field until his rsjunior year at best.

Same holds true, if not more for Hamilton. He will be going into a situation where he will struggle to see the field early and that is not good when they bring in 4 and 5 stars consistently. He should realize he is “Spence Insurance”. OSU is using the kid because they are afraid of the November 25th hearing on Spence. Manipulation 101.
