Open Thread: Pitt-Hawai’i

No TV. Just radio or watching a gamecast refresh on your computer. The tip-off is midnight — which is Saturday — but they kept it confusing by saying Friday repeatedly. Turns out they were doing that by claiming the tip was at 11:59.

Either way, I’m not staying up to listen to a radio stream. TV or ESPN3.com and I might have given it a go. In this case, I’m just going to get some rest. I’ve gotten old and soft.

You may hear mention once or twice that Pitt Coach Jamie Dixon was once an assistant at Hawai’i.

The Rainbow Warriors are 3-1, but not a great 3-1. They are being coached by an assistant who is the interim coach after the head coach was fired as allegations of NCAA violations swirled. One of their better players isn’t available. So it should be a relatively safe warm-up for Pitt. But, you know, Samford last week and being in paradise can be do strange things.

Good luck to you hearty souls and insomniacs that stay up for this one.

BTW, if schedule on Pitt web site is correct, Chaminade game is on ESPU at 9 pm Monday

Comment by wbb 11.22.14 @ 7:10 pm

would you like to refute Voytik’s stats now ?

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 7:10 pm

Syracuse is a HORRIBLE Football Team.

I pointed out before the Game that they are GOOD against the RUN.

Last time I checked, they put Conner OUT OF THE GAME.

Glad Voytik had a GOOD GAME against a Team that is only good against the RUN.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:13 pm

BUT… BUT… It was REALLY Tyler Boyd who had the BIG GAME!

Credit to Chad for getting the Ball to Tyler.

Anyone want to challenge this? Let’s go.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:16 pm

By the way… James live up to my expectation today.

Good Back capable of getting the TOUGH YARDS.

But wait for Ollison… and some incoming Freshman named Jordan.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:18 pm

Cut the crap Blatherites, Pitt won! What’s with some of you people? Let’s be happy for our seniors.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by MariettaMike 11.22.14 @ 7:19 pm

Still waiting on the new script merch guess Pitt doesn’t want any more of my $$$$$$

Comment by John 11.22.14 @ 7:20 pm

Mike… You are ABSOLUTELY Right.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:20 pm

Mariettamike.. assume you are in ga?..

Comment by 18 melba 11.22.14 @ 7:32 pm

Seriously, did Pitt lose to some Team on an Island in the Pacific?

I’m finding that HARD TO BELIEVE!

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:39 pm

Is there an Island called AKRON?

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:40 pm

You’re going to lose to most teams if you can ONLY create 7 frickin turnovers.

How we killed Colorado in the NCAA’s was playing aggressive trapping defense which led to many many turnovers and easy Pitt runouts.

We don’t have great 5 star players where you don’t have to play gimmick defenses. Cause each player you have is better than the other teams.

Dixon never wants to admit this.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 7:49 pm

Switched to hoops btw because the football season is really over.

Connor won’t play next week and we will get routed.

Unless the ACC desperately needs another bowl team.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 7:51 pm

Emel… You mis-spelled Conner. A sign Pitt will BEAT Miami?

HaHa

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 7:54 pm

We got 2 points and 1 rebound from Uchebo/Randall.

all by Big Joe.

I never really thought losing Randall would be a big deal. Others seemed to think he was something.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 7:56 pm

On a Pitt team from 2002-2009, both Luther & CJ would have been redshirted.

Both are getting minutes…not a good sign at all.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 7:58 pm

Seems like PoD is desperate as well.

now with a spelling critique. lol

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:01 pm

Posing THE QUESTION once again… What will happen FIRST…

A FINAL FOUR appearance by a Jamie Dixon Coached Pitt Team… OR… a MAJOR BOWL appearance by a Pitt Football Team.

The fact that you have to THINK about this at all says something.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 8:03 pm

What’s everybody complain’ about….we’re finally as good as Michigan. 😉

Comment by Jackagain 11.22.14 @ 8:04 pm

Emel… there you go again. When in doubt, DISCREDIT the opposition.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 8:04 pm

L-Ville goes into South Bend, first time ever playing Notre Dame.

And beats them.

It usually takes an Act of God for Pitt to beat Notre Dame.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:05 pm

or a couple Vinopal interceptions.

Same thing, come to think of it.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:06 pm

POD…I’ll bowl a 300 before either of them happen.

BTW, my best game is a 195 bowled about 45 years ago.

Comment by Jackagain 11.22.14 @ 8:07 pm

Don’t take this the WRONG way, but I GUARANTEED Pitt’s WIN against Notre Dame a year ago.

In doubt, ask Dr. Tom.

Not to say I don’t miss some. But Notre Dame last year was an EASY ONE.

And so is MIAMI this year.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 8:14 pm

BBBBBBut, what about the football game? No in-game thread this week?

I get that I was behind the times a bit over the last two weeks before the MMQB but to have no Blather articles on the game at all?

BTW – saw the game today and will have a more accurate MMQB up by Monday Morning. Until then I’ll post a game article now.

Besides, everyone knows PITT is a football school so why the angst when PITT loses to the Rainbow Warriors? Speaking about Hawai’i what about DL Jeremiah Taleni’s good play today? Only a FR and he’s 6’2″ and 300 Lbs. he;ll be the “Island Intruder” or the “Hawai’ian Hitman” before too long.

Comment by Reed 11.22.14 @ 8:15 pm

Neither will ever happen for either coach..I took that loss to nova worse than any other loss as I knew that was the one time we were good enough to win it all… and that it probably would never happen again..

Comment by 18 melba 11.22.14 @ 8:19 pm

With having earned Zero (O) points in any sports(which includes both football & basketball) that are included for the Capital One Cup for several years running now.

(could only find records dating back to 2010)
(we might have a couple points when Wanny was here and the basketball team didn’t fold annually in the first weekend of the Big Dance)

ZERO Points for 2010-2011
ZERO Points for 2011-2012
ZERO Points for 2012-2013
ZERO Points for 2013-2014

That must be a trick question.

Question should be:

How in the F*ck does Cornhole keep his job ???

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:25 pm

Reed…

I’ll save you the trouble. Voytik had his BEST Game… and I have yet to look at the Numbers.

But… contrary to dhuff’s and Emel’s opinion of Tyler Boyd as a FOOTBALL PLAYER… it was REALLY BOYD’S BEST GAME!

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 8:25 pm

Neither will ever happen. Dixon had his chance and blew it and Wanny was the only hope of getting to a major bowl

Comment by John 11.22.14 @ 8:26 pm

Reed I called him Big Kahuna couldn’t think of anything else. Voytik really picked up his passing in this game and Chris James looked much better reading his line blocks.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:30 pm

Hate to admit it, but concur with John.

that ship has sailed on Dixon. he can’t recruit real elite players. Nor does he have the ability/or maybe it’s stubbornness, to play any creative defenses to overcome the lack of talent he recruits.

football is self-explanatory. no money spent = a middling program that loses to MAC teams at home and even D2 teams.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:36 pm

yea it took Boeheim how many years. But he always got elite players. Carmello anyone.

Comment by Emel 11.22.14 @ 8:38 pm

18 melba… Feel for ya. That was the Game when I said Jamie is NEVER takin’ Pitt to the BIG DANCE.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.22.14 @ 8:47 pm

A major bowl appearance ISN’T the same as a final four.

Case in point that Pitt team that was in the Fiesta Bowl was horrible. A major bowl is nothing. Pitt basketball would have been in major bowls more than half the time if basketball was run like football.

There is now a final four in football. Why do you have lower standards for the football team?

Final Four is Final Four.

Just insane on here. Act like Pitt basketball is bad. Pitt basketball is better than more than 90% of all other programs in D1 basketball. So somehow that being mediocre. But it makes sense most of you guys who complain about basketball not being elite don’t really pay attention to basketball so don’t really know what you are talking about and you only comment when they do poorly.

Comment by Wardapalooza 11.22.14 @ 9:17 pm

Ward Pitt basketball stinks. On campus nice arena. Pay a head coach 3M and get our ass kicked every year in first or second round by a no body. I call that all things consider mediocre. Dixon is a hot mess coaching and looks like he will have a heart attack if he doesnt quit micromanaging. Zero defense.

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.23.14 @ 12:39 am

The SHAME is… they (i.e. Pitt Admin) TORE DOWN a Football Stadium that actually had a Championship connected to it in order to build a BASKETBALL Stadium around a MEDIOCRE Hoops Program.

What Pederson should have done is build a NEW Pitt Stadium in the same FOOTPRINT of the Old Stadium and then build a Basketball Stadium in one of the many other available locations.

MAJOR, MAJOR SCREW UP!

Comment by PittofDreams 11.23.14 @ 1:12 am

As Hillgrove and Groat like to say: “Live by the three, you die by the three.” Last night Pitt died by the three.

Robinson and Newkirk were both 1 for 5 from three-point land, and that was the game. This team has four or five shooters that have the potential to hit 40% of their three-point shots. Robinson and Newkirk aren’t in that group.

Comment by Howard 11.23.14 @ 3:22 am

Artis also 0-6, not sure if any were threes, but bad either way.

Comment by gc 11.23.14 @ 6:55 pm

Isn’t a bit early in the season for these kind of histrionics around the hoops team? My gosh, a loss after a 20+ hour trip and playing without an important contributor/leader in CW and still adjusting to not having DJ or a viable center is not the end of the world. Calm down (Oh, I’m sorry, CALM DOWN!!!!!!). If they lay an egg tonight, you’re welcome to tell me to GFM, but for now, take some deep breaths or try some visualization and let’s see if they can right the ship a little.
